the last bible verse in the video is actually lamentations 1:20 I unfortunately am an idiot and got it mixed up so just pretend it says lamentations 1:20 please I'm sorry. also I titled the video "lamentations" because that was my favorite verse, but obviously not all verses are lamentations. I honestly wanted to call this serena joy | a woman's place but there's an episode called a woman's place so the video would've been lost in a sea of clips of that episode in the youtube search.

is she a good person? no. does she try to be better? also no. but should I be judged for loving her? absolutely.

Would you consider doing this style of video for the other characters? It would be very interesting with someone like June, Emily, Fred, or Aunt Lydia. With the Bible verses at each intersection. Serena definitely gives you the most to work with. Great video.

Anyone who dismisses Serena Joy with "I hate her" or "She's a #*#" needs to watch this. She's neither saint nor sinner, she is a complex, complicated character capable of both depravity as well as deep caring. She was both an orchestrator of her world as well as a pawn in its game. If you get a show with a character like this, you're lucky. But consider that we also have the character of Aunt Lydia, June, and Emily. THT is an embarrassment of riches.

i never comment on youtube videos, but this is absolutely amazing. Serena is, in my opinion, the most compelling and complex character in the show. you conveyed everything i love about her, even the ugly and messy sides, beautifully. i don’t know if anyone else has brought this up, but she reminds me so much of Regina Mills, and her relationship with June mirrors Swan Queen quite eerily.

Great editing, congratulations, dunno how many times i’ ve seen this vid. The pace, the music, really great choices, in 11 minutes i can understand the complexity of this really great character, one of the greatest on tv series due to its contradictions between good & evil, & great great masterpiece interpretation by Yvonne Strahovski. The chemistry w Elisabeth Moss is unbelievable, i just hope that she can be redeemed through the series end. Hope the writters can find a way, even if she needs to be in prison for several years & understand the atrocities that she did. At the end of the day, as u portrait in one of the scenes, she is trapped in a vicious circle and in a cage, and she doesn’t have the guts or the psychological tools to get out. She obviously feels emphaty for June as we can see through the series, so i dont think she is a real psychopath, she just doesn’t have yet the clarity to break her fate, hope she eventually does.

How the fuck was this over eleven minutes long, I swear to God it felt like 4, maybe 5 tops 😱
Loved how you had the Bible verses kind of as a heading for each of those different focuses. That was a really clever way to combine all of those smaller videos on the different aspects of her character into one bigger piece while also weaving the religious aspect behind her actions into the whole character study. The music also fit with that overall theme / style really well and worked amazingly by building up drama when needed, but also slowing down / stopping for some emotional punches.
I can't even say what my favourite part was right now. I'd probably have to rewatch it a couple of times. The one that showed Serenas violent side was pretty intense and gave me goosebumps with all of her outbursed condensed into such a short amount of time (also Yvonne's acting, holy shit). The one where you studied her desperate longing for a child of her own was also really powerful to me, but maybe I'm biased, cause I feel for her despite everything she did.
But yeah, all of it was just 👌👌👌
A+ content and I have a feeling I'll probably keep finding more details to love about this every time I rewatch it. 🙌
This is a good video highlighting the complexities of Serena Joy. Would you make a similar one about Commander Fred please? He is just as complex.

I'm glad to say i never felt bad for her this entire series. I didn't feel bad when she got her finger cut off because she helped to make that law. And i didn't feel bad when she thought she could run off to canada to be with that baby that was never her child. I never felt bad when she was beat she did so much worse. She deserves to be childless and to be put to an internity of suffering. She deserves nothing her character development is a spiral into how a false prophet can ruin lives and harm others. The actor who plays her though is fantastic for being able to make me feel this much hatred for a fictional character. Serena is wild and she will never be able to love. She's a monster.

@@Bnazf in overall character development, absolutely. And that's what I hate about this show. Everyone else is so poorly developed.
Emily and Moira for example. What's their driving factor? They're gay. They don't like Gilead because they're gay. That's it. The writers seem to think being gay is a personality.
Now Serena? What's her motivation? She wants a baby. So she supports gilead, but she's also an educated woman and a strong woman at that, who essentially brings on a regime that can get her what she wants, BUT there's consequences. The other thing is, she wouldn't have needed a handmaid for a baby had the supposed "good side" not shot her and rendered her sterile, giving her even more motivation to see the regime installed, not only as a way to get what she desires (the baby she wants, and the fertility crisis solved) but now as a punishment to those who took her ability to have her own child away-- and it all culminated in a loss of her own freedom. She actually has conflicts. Both she and Lydia have conflicts.
Everyone else is like "I'm gay so gilead bad let's take it down and go to Canada woot"
Serena and Lydia are the only reasons to watch this show.

@@squirleyspitmonkey3926 June has various motivations too, though. Hannah is her main focus but don't forget June was also raised by a pretty radical feminist so even without Hannah, she had a dormant rebellious streak. Not to mention June is starting to fight cruelty with cruelty (in Series 4).
@@squirleyspitmonkey3926 the Handmaid’s are stripped of their personality entirely, and must choose either: conform and become a slave, or become a monster and fight against Gilead no matter the cost. Janine is interesting as she almost likes Lydia and sometimes, would rather stay in Gilead and live her days out their instead of getting killed. Commander Lawrence is also interesting as he betrays the world he created and decides to use his power for good, although he never views himself as a hero.

I can’t believe people think she is irredeemable. She is so clearly a victim of internalized misogyny. She is a PERFECT example of internalized misogyny and how it ruins both the woman’s life and any other women she projects onto. All the things she preached about “biological destiny” is the exact same shit that religion teaches womens and girls. Id love so much to see her heal from this and become a free liberated woman.
