I think the saddest thing is that, even with her longing, I don't think Serena would have ever been a good mother. She's clinging to a promise of happiness, always out of reach, perhaps it never even existed. She's a despicable yet deeply sympathic and sad character.

Everything that happened to her was her fault. She's responsible for her own suffering. Everything that was done to her was because of her own actions. An excellent portrayal of an abuser who suffers abuse. Characters like her remind us the world isn't black and white. Even the most evil people still suffer and can suffer at their own hands.
