      Well, Janet borrowed and reworked the Riff from "I Hate Myself for Loving You" by Joan Jeff and the Blackhearts. She has a rock hit because she copied an existing rock song.

    Janet did this song because She stated She'd always wanted to do a Rock song! She pulled that off big time!

    • @zmbdog
      @zmbdog 3 года назад +43

      Yeah she said as a teen she was a big fan of Motley Crue, Poison and the like. She obviously knew what she was doing here. I don't think any other pop artist besides Janet or Michael could've pulled this off. Especially to the extent of hard rock/metal fans liking it. We will _pounce_ if a crossover comes off as pandering or inauthentic, which is probably why few attempt to dip their toes in the genre to begin with.

    • @virgilwyatt4632
      @virgilwyatt4632 3 года назад +20

      @@zmbdog I think Lenny Cravitz, Prince and maybe even Bruno Mars could have done a great job at it, too. Especially Lenny & Prince and especially as a duet. I could also see Sheila E. on percussion and and back- up vocals on this track. Whatdayathink?

    • @zmbdog
      @zmbdog 3 года назад +14

      @@virgilwyatt4632 I'm not familiar with Bruno Mars. Prince or Lenny Kravitz I could see but I've never thought of them as purely 'pop' stars. Lenny's always had a rock edge and Prince is like...experimental is what he does. I'm kinda surprised he hasn't ventured into metal. He actually commissioned Warrant's demos! They were done at Paisley Park and led to the band getting signed with Columbia.

    • @zmbdog
      @zmbdog 3 года назад +6

      @@virgilwyatt4632 Okay somehow the second half of my comment is MIA. Weird, here's the redux...
      As far as someone firmly in mainstream pop...it's hard to imagine. Like, Madonna or Paula Abdul couldn't do this. You can just tell, they don't have it in them. Cher might. I can't seem to gauge her. I just see a game show mystery box. I'd say the closest to maybe doing it well would be Tina Turner or Bonnie Tyler. Vocally, no problem. I just question if they could write it. This one isn't just good, it's appropriate, lyrically. And I'd bet it happened naturally, she just wrote what she felt. I like "Escapade" but if this song had the same subject matter, it wouldn't gel. I think with Tina or Bonnie we'd probably get something along those lines at best and it would just seem disingenuous. I'd love to hear them do a metal cover. Especially Tina, I could see her getting up on stage even with something super-heavy and just blow it up!

      She probably wishes that too. It's been said for years that Janet (and to a lesser extent, Michael) would've rather pursued hard rock/metal if left to their own devices. But being part of a pop establishment like the Jackson family your path is somewhat predetermined, especially with Michael and Janet being the youngest.

Before you know it, you feel enraptured by it caught up in its grasp. You feel powerful and you feel like you can take on anything. And when they hit you with that guitar solo. You are headbanging to it. Janet this one of the best songs you have ever done. Female singers take notes this how its done.

    For the album version of "Black Cat", most of the guitar lines were played by Dave Barry, including the intro, main riff, and a memorable thematic solo. Barry consequently became Janet Jackson's longtime touring guitarist. John McClain, A&R executive for A&M Records, provided the slide-guitar part, while Jellybean Johnson played the funky guitar part that punctuates the album version of the song. Although credited on the album, Jesse Johnson provided a guitar solo that was not used for the album version, but is featured in each of the remixes.
    The video edit of "Black Cat" features Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme on rhythm guitar, while the 'Guitar Mix' features Vernon Reid of Living Colour.

    Black Cat"
    All the lonely nights I spend alone
    Never around to love me
    You're always gone
    Cause you're hangin out
    Breakin' the rules
    Oh the man has come
    Looking for you
    You're a rebel now
    Don't give a damn
    Always carrying on
    With the gang
    I'm trying to tell you boy
    It's a mistake
    You won't realize
    Til it's too late
    Don't understand
    Why you insist
    On ways of living such a dangerous life
    Time after time you stay away
    And I just know that you're telling me lies
    Black cat
    Nine lives
    Short days
    Long nights
    Livin on the edge
    Not afraid to die
    Heart beat
    Real strong
    But not
    For long
    Better watch your step
    Or you're gonna die
    You're so together boy
    But just at a glance
    You'll do anything
    If given a chance
    Scheming, plannin lies
    To get what you need
    So full of promises
    That you never keep
    Don't you tell yourself
    That it's okay
    Sick and tired of
    All of your games
    And you want me to stay
    Better change
    Makes no sense to me
    Your crazy ways
    Black cat
    Nine lives
    Short days
    Long nights
    Livin on the edge
    Not afraid to die
    Heart beat
    Real strong
    But not
    For long
    Better watch your step
    Or you're gonna die

    This is my favorite video because I'm in it! :) Right after the guitar solo. I called in sick to work to go to the video shoot at the old Met Center (where the Mall of America currently stands). It was such a fun experience to be there and all the anticipation waiting for the video to come out to see if we had made it in. I did, my friend did not and she was pissed! 😂

    WOW! Just look at the people ENJOYING the concert, back in a time when they used to dance and have fun and not FILM everything whit their iphones! Gosh I only wish I could have seen Janet at this time and me and my friends would have rock out!!!

    • @AngelofAnguish
      @AngelofAnguish 9 лет назад +3

      Thejdreamerzful THAT'S THE REASON why I DON'T go to concerts, anymore! In my opinion, in THIS day and age, (it seems) people don't go to concerts for the music-they go ONLY to RECORD (or is that "bootleg") the show for "later viewing." In other words, given or with the number modern gadgets AT concerts, concerts have become or are, now, "press conferences!"

      I attended both the Rhythm Nation tour and the Janet tour. Best female performer I’ve ever seen LIVE. I rarely attend concerts today but the lack of iPhones back in the day made the concerts much more enjoyable because you were more into the experience of being there. Being there feels a lot different in comparison to watching the concerts on RUclips. You would’ve had a blast attending her tours back then. High energy, raw talent, amazing choreography and authentic singing 🎤. Seriously, she was the biggest female artist on the planet when “Rhythm Nation” was released, bigger than Madonna and nearly on the level of her brother Michael (RIP) and Prince (RIP).

    I am 42 and I could literally overdose on nostalgia. The 90's was the last decade where there was still an innocence to life. They had the best movies, tv, and music. I sometimes sit and just close my eyes and go back to this time on my mind...just immersing myself in all the memories. I cry a lot just yearning for those days that I can never get back. The world is such a 💩show today and I just wish I could be a kid again. Just wanting to relive all those precious times 😢. I thank God for RUclips...one of the only online platforms I really look at. Long live the 90's !!!! 👍👍👍💜💜💜

    One very famous rock/metal vocalist who absolutely loved this song was Lemmy (god rest his soul) from Motorhead and even wanted to do a duet with Janet. His record company said NO.
    Being a heavy rock/metal fan, this would've been amazing.
