A superb film. one of the best of the decade and millennium. I recommend Tristan Gooley's book Wild Signs and Star Paths for natural navigation

The white man's intention of not letting the tribesmen learn how to use a compass is noble. He wants for that tribe to preserve their own natural way of navigation and travel. Nowadays, how many traditional ways have been forgotten for the sake of technology. Traditions that are not necessarily wrong, and not against progress.

+Ray Yeung (RKY) Exactly, it is a type arrogance. The modern Western man wants "primitive" people to preserve their "purity" while they enjoy the benefits of modern technology. While I fully understand what Creative North means by preserving traditions and so on, one cannot forbid another to learn. Knowledge belongs to all, like he said. It's a very complicated situation. Brazil for example has los a lot of its various local traditions in the last 70, 80 years, because of its developmennt, modernizatio, and I think it's sad. But at the same time it gets acquires new ones. Who am I to stop people from getting to the cities and wanting to change??
The problem is when the process of learning and modernization is forced upon a people, and is not gradual. That leads to cultural shocks and the result can be seen in Native Brazilians, native Americans, and so on, who have mingled with modern society and have a hard time adapting, living in total misery, with a high rate of suicides and alcoholism.
