Philippe Jaroussky as Ruggiero is in thrall to Patricia Petibon as the sorceress Alcina in Katie Mitchell’s virtuosic production of Handel’s opera from the 2015 Aix-en-Provence Festival, described by Bachtrack as “a night of a thousand delights”. Conducted by Andrea Marcon, this was, in the words of Opera News, “musically … a performance of the highest festival level”.
Alcina, one of Handel’s most popular operas, is named after a dangerously seductive sorceress - soprano Patricia Petibon in this production from the 2015 Aix-en-Provence Festival; but perhaps the central figure is the bewitched warrior Ruggiero, performed here by Philippe Jaroussky. The role, which includes the haunting, lilting aria ‘Verdi prati’, was composed for the celebrated countertenor Giovanni Carestini, who provided the focus for Jaroussky’s superb 2007 album of arias by Handel, Hasse, Porpora, Leo and Gluck.

I saw it live in Aix-en-Provence. It was a masterpiece of baroque music. One of the finest pieces of classical music I’ve ever witnessed. It will remain in my heart forever.

Ludwig Van Beethoven sais once he would kneel in front of George Friedrich Handel's tomb and would remove his hat, in respect of the greatest compositor of all times. And Patricia! She is so great! Wunderbar gesungen, ich komme immer wieder darauf zurück. Das Bühnenbild ist leider aber wirklich hässlich.
Die Oper ist fast immer hässlich. Besser nur hören. Aber sie ist eine Künstlerin. Zweifellos!
darueber kann man sicherlichlich reden/sprechen - aber ehrlich - nun: "isses das wert?" der erste satz, auch der zweite, wenn denn der erste satz einer war (..;-)..), denen beiden stimme ich toootahl zu. mit buehnenbilders und anderen dingen habe ich weniger probleme als mit dem "wirklichen" musiker-leben (oder: musik-erleben) heutzutage - in hamburg, immerhin der 2t - größten stadt dieser brd.... hat auch 'ne ganz gute oper - leider unbezahlbar. nur für mich. soll ja'n einzelfall sein ... - schlimmer: .. bleiben! tja - immerhin gibt's noch wahlen in 'schland...
