All in all the best performance.I have heard a few interpretations of this aria. Sandrine is perfect. There is emotion but not overdone. The high notes are perfect. No pushed notes for dramatic effect.
What a heart wrenching, dramatic performance !! the greatest Alcina ever. Always loved Sandrin Piau in EVERTHING she does but what a great singing this is !! Such a refined, intelligent, beautiful and dramatic rendition. This most beautiful of all aria is also most taxing, difficult, long aria as well. What she accomplished here is a monumental task equal to the legendary Maria Callas singing "Visi d'Arte" in Tosca. This is only third time I cried listening the music or watching the opera performance during my long years music listening. Bach "Erbarme dich, mein Got" violin intro, Philippe Jaroussky singing "Cum dederit ..." and this. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Sandrin.
Ora intendo perché l'arme vestì; crudei, spergiuro! di lui, di or farne vendetta io giuro. Ah! mio cor! schernito sei! Stelle! Dei! Nume d'amore! Traditore! T'amo tanto; puoi lasciarmi sola in pianto, oh dei! perché? Ma, che fa gemendo Alcina? Son reina, è tempo ancora: resti o mora, peni sempre, o torni a me.
I was there - on the back row, surrounded by cameras. I will remember it for ever. The central climax of the greatest opera, performed with so much power and emotion that it completely wrecked me. Sandrine Piau is amazing!
Sublime singing and interpretation! Piau here reaches Sutherland's otherwordly beauty and sublime melancholy in singing this aria. Her voice still sounds so fresh, clear and luminous, and add to that a great expressivity.
gerard barbier Piau’s version is sublime. Have you heard Arleen Auger’s version?.. different, but equally, if not more impressive despite imperfections.
For sure, Haendel is not - so to speak - an innocent ground, and - for sure - Lorraine Hunt (Lieberson) was, may be, in all her modesty the female singer bringing a number of Haendel pieces to supreme expression, until her early death. I hold in my CD stock Sandrine Piau with Christophe Rousset on Opera Seria, and already this (the first ten years) made you listen very carefully, with flowing emotion. The recording here goes beyond, being absolutely memorable. In a certain way, you could say that Lorraine Hunt (but in another way) is still between us. And, as to Sandrine Piau,French helps : Quelle maîtrise, et quelle émotion, et les deux à la fois. Une merveille !
I dont know what is happening here. I know not where she is comming from or where she is going to, nor do i understand a single word she is saying, but, she seems like a woman scorned? I do love Opera, albeit that maddening circumstance of the language barrier. I of course feel the emotion of it all, and for now, it is all that i need.
thanks for sharing this, we had seen it in the Brussels La Monnaie opera but are enchanted to enjoy these fragments again here! Very good orchestra under the direction of Christophe Rousset!
We owe a hug debt to the late Australian Dame Joan Sutherland who with her husband Richard Bonnying revived the art of Bel Canto singing and operatic gems such as this.
Handel treble roles for female are girlish soubrettes, lyric feminine coloraturas, boyish soprano types, light mezzo types and dark contraltos and of course counter tenors playing all sorts now. This is the boyish soprano type similar to Lorraine Hunt. In the role of Alcina this is another way to go with Sandrine Piau. There is a certain howly, pale, quality that is almost androgynous. It can be every moving for listeners wanting to get away from the more cos gendered feminine sound. It certainly is otherworldly.
Ah! mio cor! Schernito sei! Stelle! Dei! Nume d'amore! Traditore! T'amo tanto; puoi lasciarmi sola in pianto, oh dèi! Perché? Ma, che fa gemendo Alcina? Son reina, è tempo ancora: resti o mora, peni sempre, o torni a me
Unbearable. Poor singer, veins in her throat seem to explose already in the recitative. And the orchestra tries to distract us with those strange ridiculous sounds. Everything so affected, of such a poor quality. Pitiful.

Her version of Cum Dederit (recorded for the documentary "Home") made me tear up ...
oh, you too cried? What kind of time is this? "The most tender heart was given to man by nature once endowed him with tears ..."
Like "Callas"??!!!!!don't know wether I should laugh or cry

This is the best version of the best aria I've ever heard. It's a perfect expression.

Magnifique! Un da capo si intelligent!
She’s really stunning.
The intensity is overwhelming. Tears
Devastatingly heart-wrenching....absolutely superb, technically perfect and emotionally shattering

Oh my god, are we really comparing Piau with Sutherland? 🥺
divino
Sublime! Extraordinaire Sandrine Piau!
I'm speechless in front of so much beauty! I didn't know sandrine piau could be so dramatic, the best rendition of this aria i've heard so far .

Wish I could have seen the whole opera. Sandrine certainly makes a dramatic statement. She is one of my favorites.
Absolutely wonderful!

Amazing, breathtaking, divine. Brava

I am not usually a fan of Baroque opera, but dear god, she converted me. Exquisite intensity and tension interplay. *chills*

Is that a dulcimer or theorbo in the ensemble?? So mesmerizing-dizzyingly beautiful performance all around!!❤

Soberbia!

🙄 What ridiculous sounds are you talking about?
@@nancyJ976 Those that you hear yourself too and are quite trendy among the so-called baroccari.
@@DiomedesDioscuro And what should baroque singing sound like, according to you?
@@nancyJ976 Like a good one. And in Alcina's case, like the best one.
