Set Western music on a new course. I took 2 senior-level elective courses in Music in a PhD program (long story). Opera and 20th century music. This Opera figured prominently in both courses.
Bravo to the Berlin audience for holding absolute stillness in the hall after the cutoff, until DB dropped his hands. Even the Maestro himself seemed reluctant to let go of the ephemeral moment. In the States, it seems there is invariably one lout who is compelled to scream "Braaaavaaaaaaaa!" in the split-second after the cutoff.
I attended a performance of Tristan und Isolde in Vienna, at the Staats Oper last year, and the performance of the Liebestod was magnificent; I was deeply moved and the elderly German gentleman in front of me was openly weeping ant the beauty and tragedy that unfolded before us. It was also the first Opera for my daughter. The applause was thunderous and lasted for nearly 15 minutes!
Oh Wagner. You have so many grievous faults, but for this piece alone you are forgiven. Heartwrenchingly gorgeous with intimations of the infinite and the cosmic. Utterly, unbearably sublime.
What a gifted woman. Absolutely beautiful. The voice of a true Wagner singer, strong enough to dominate the whole orchestra and extremely delicate and smooth when needed like in the final notes. ❤
She is an absolute Goddess!!!! Brought all 7000 people to their feet at the Albert Hall in Covent Garden’s Valkyrie. O E of the greatest performances of all time. God bless her!!!! X
I have performed this aria, however, I have never sounded like this amazing woman. What an incredible performance from all involved. It causes me to weep, endlessly. My heart opens out beyond this world.....
What a legend Waltraud Meier is. The looks on the choir members' faces says a lot. Professional singers mesmerized, stunned, entranced, with an absorbed smile. I am grateful to have heard her sing the Wesendonck Lieder in concert. This woman knows how to captivate every soul in a room.
I recently came across it reading Spengler's Decline of the West. There is are so many references to art. You really need to delve in to achieve a full understanding of the text. He keeps referring to Tristan over and over. So I grabbed my head phones and dove in. Moved to tears and so thankful to know this beauty exists. Art stands on its own despite the channel. ❤
❤ The production is what you call perfect. However, I would like to add, the enormous amount of work involved in creating such a sound creates colour, space, form and balance. I am very moved by how engaged the orchestra is. Be the only one lives into and can see all the way into the soul and originates its power in an element that gives us listeners - what they themselves do not get, because, they work to create - what we get. Learning to listen is learning to linger. You see Wagner, you feel his spirit. Tragedy yes. It is what we are as humans. Many classical enthusiasts make the fatal mistake of comparing who is the best. Instead of watching and listening to the interaction. Many productions - especially classical records or LP's has been produced over many years. Some up to 7 years. Before it goes into production. Striving for perfection can be destructive, as mistakes are not mistakes, but provide a dynamic human content. The classical world is not to satisfy its audience by proving its perfection. The art of being alive. Unfortunately, this world has lost so many talented musicians and singers because it was ruined by bad talk and publicity, by people who do not understand or are capable of dynamic humanity and strive to turn art into a kind of sporting competition. And saying "the best" is not nice. Because I can say that Copenhagen has the best Wagner voices in the world. That's not the point. Even those who qualify as the best do not like that role at all. So if Opera is to survive, it is a strong necessity to open up to empathy and the ability to see the joy it is. Anyone can, when they have their heart and soul. Thank you for being able to experience this living space and thank you RUclips for making it possible for everyone to listen. Oh, if only we could get the very young involved, and let them play with words, thoughts and uplift others, instead of being derogatory and offensive or the bullies. A good unity is to lift, bring out the rare talents we have. We have many wagons, but unfortunately we are unable to bring them forward. Be aware and take care. All are good enough.❤
Extraordinary. I happened on this today totally out-of-the-blue. As it began, I immediately noticed the camerawork here is sheer genius. Meier and Barenboim shown displaying (without obstruction) what made/makes them the artistic lightening rods and spell-casters that they are. Every single performative detail here is individually completely fascinating and yet somehow totally subsumed into one coherent and potent whole. The extended silence at the end says it all. Thank you for this fine post.
I had the greatest privilege to listen Ms. Meier many years ago with Chicago Symphony Orchestra and maestro Barenboim in Chicago Symphony Center in role of Isolde. It was and still is one of the most fascinating experiences I ever had. Ms. Meier touched me profoundly in all possible ways. It was evening to behold. CSO and maestro Barenboim was grandioso as always.

Such a great performance. Ms Meier is amazing from her clear phrasing to her precise musicianship and her colorful interpretation. A truly Wagnerian artist.
Well there's die Philharmonie and Carnegie Hall, and that's it. What a wonderful, tear-invoking performance! Like many listeners here, weeping to listen and also to watch the normally impassive faces of the choir members begin to break and their eyes also well up. It is the sublimity of love in all its forms. Simply unbelievable music, a memorable performance. We thank you all

My dear Daniel, conducting is a profession. The enthusiasm and excitement can not cover the lack of technical skills and proper conductors' techniques. A huge respect for you, and your musicality! You deserved it! With my deepest admiration and respect!.
The Liebestodt is a high point in Western Civilization and well done to Barenboim. Yeas other conductors have done that and well done also. It is a great achievement to Barenboim, Wagner and the entire orchestra that their power has come through the flawed medium oy RUclips to bring the essence of Wagner to us.
At 09:45 when DB "cues" the bass clarinet, he just raises his eyebrows and says, "It's all you, kid." I'd be crapping myself. All of the woodwind lines in the prelude are so exposed. Any little squawk or warble from one of the reeds and the whole hall is gonna hear it. Nowhere to hide. You can tell from their expressions (and sweat) how hard they're concentrating. Waltraud is sublime, as usual.
