  • They’re not cosplayers or period drama actors, but rather members of a booming movement to turn Hanfu, or ethnic Han clothing, into everyday wear.
    The so-called Hanfu movement has gained a large following among the ethnic Han Chinese group, which makes up more than 90% of the Chinese population.
    In the southern metropolis of Shenzhen, we joined some one thousand Hanfu enthusiasts on a day of Han clothing and culture. Watch the video to find out why young Chinese are embracing ancient dress.

    This is awesome. Anything involving reviving and expressing culture should be celebrated. It's not like they are telling other cultures to not exist, just modernizing and normalizing hanfu.

      Actually whenever someone wears hanfu or kimono onlookers are indifferent (mostly), curious or they think the hanfu/kimono wearer is weird (they'll call you ninja, kung fu master or samurai 'where's you're katana?').

      In Korea people wearing Hanbok is normal. In Vietnam people wearing Ao Dai is normal. But people in China think wearing Hanfu is weird. This is proof that the Qing Dynasty destroyed Chinese culture. Did you know that people were killed for not following Manchu dress code? Men who did not shave the front part of their head were executed. The Qings put strict sanctions to systematically oppress Han Chinese. It's the most likely reason why Hanfu seem strange to modern day folks. I saw a documentary where a millennial showed Hanfu clothing to her grandfather and he said he never saw such style and thought it was weird. That's the result of generations of oppression from Manchu rule.

      @ H Boogie , it's rather because of the chinazis' destruction of all classical chinese culture as ' counter revolutionary ' . Where all cultural roots have disappeared the artificial reintroduction of a single outdated style rightly feels very weird .

    "What's called, hanfu, today".
    Oh no, the term hanfu includes both genuine ancient traditional Han outfit and the modern adapted one.
    And sorry western people inclusive of that senior lecturer who probably bought his PhD for Chinese culture. Han is a mixture of many ethnics into a undifferentiable larger group. So it would be funny to say it would discriminate the minority. We are above the discrimination phase and already went through the mixing phase.
    I think it will serve as inspiration for those real minorities who are dominated by Jeans, t-shirts and suits, hanfu had a long dormant period and if it can come back alive the other ethnics around the world should be able to fight back westernisation too. Moreover western clothings don't carry much of any traditional culture relevant to the non western people.

As an American who gives you the right to judge what is acceptable or not for the Chinese on cultural matters especially what they do in their homeland? Chinese should respect Manchu culture more than over Han culture if they want to keep 'one China' policy. It's not Han but Manchu rulers who completed modern Chinese territory including Taiwan, Tibet, Manchu, Inner Mongolia, and Xinjiang. These areas were traditionally 'foreign region' to Han ethnics that they have no historical affinities to these region. If Chinese keep only pursuing Han ethnicity in their nationalism, they will lose the legitimacy of their 'new' lands, being back to Ming dynasty's territory. It's why Qing Manchus should be the direct line of ancestry of China.

    • @victorkmlee
      @victorkmlee 4 года назад +2

      What could be more deceptive and ridiculous! It was the during the Manchurian reign that heralded the century of humiliation for the Chinese due to foreign incursions and carving up of the country (beginning with the opium war, unequal treaties etc). This was because the the Manchurian emperors were proud, dismissive of science and advancement but in reality weak, backwards and corrupt. The overthrow of the Ching (Manchu) empire started the recovery of the Chinese nation but this was interrupted by corrupt Manchurian general (Yuan ShiKai), warlordism, colonialism and Japanese empire.
