  • The Old World is upon us at long last! With the new setting gearing up for full release, the time has finally come to fully delve into the lore that will be relevant to the new setting. For this first video, we'll be focusing on the OLD lore for Bretonnia to begin with and then work our way across the world while also examining the new lore.

    So in this video I barely spent any time on Louen Orc-Slayer but that's because for tomorrow's video he's going to be the main focus and we'll delve more in there.
    The only important notes about him in the old lore is that he takes the throne in 2201 IC and relatively early into his reign declares an Errantry War against the Greenskins which proves to be quite effective in pushing out the savage hordes. Be sure to join for tomorrow's video to learn more!
    Also the Affair of the False Grail takes place in 2297 IC and the Siege of Mousillon starts that same year, which is quite the quick turnaround! The siege ends 3 years later in 2300 IC.

    Malfleur is one of those weirdly unexplored characters from Warhammer history. She's ostensibly a Bretonnian wizard which ought to mean she's a damsel but she's very skilled with shadow magic (and possibly other lores), which damsels don't learn, and is obviously aligned against The Lady. It definitely feels like there's a lot more to her than meets the eye and then she suddenly dies and both her, and her false grail, are never mentioned again.

    Funnily enough, there was an old page on the Games Workshop site about Maldred having a bastard daughter, who would grow up to be one of the rare female knights in Bretonnia. Malory de Mousillon had only a sentence or so to her name, but the idea of a battle crazed woman taught in dark magic acting as champion and executioner is enough to be somewhat memorable. If GW is going to be redoing things around this time period, I wonder if she will have a small cameo somewhere. Never did have her fate stated explicitly anywhere.

    Still waiting for Questing/Grail Beasts as both monstrous cavalry and mount options.
    Brigands are in, so we need Herrimaults to go full Men in Tights.
    Still waiting for those mobile castles and flying ships.
    Still waiting for Naiads either as hero units, regular units or yet better as both.
    Also still waiting for Sons of Bretonnia.

    So one thing I expect to see changed in Old World is how insular Bretonnia’s storyline is going to be. Stuff like more focus on the invasions Bretonnia suffered and lead against outside forces and also more explicit interference from other factions during the False Grail Incident rather than it just being implied and the odd monster showing up.

    The succession makes no sense in this lore. You have Louen and Joules the Just from different dukedoms so there is no way that they are father and son so its not primogeniture. The only way to have it make sense is Joules is a younger son of Louen who married the heiress of Gisoreux and then the older brother died before Louen so he became heir. Any heirs of the brother would have to be minors for even that scenario to make sense. But then the 3rd king seems to follow proper Salic primogeniture for medieval France and had tp marry in the line.

    • @vortex1603
      @vortex1603 6 месяцев назад

      The primogeniture law doesn't fit well in the Bretonnia lore. Before royal blood, the Roy must be elected by all the dukes and the Fay Enchanteresse, and he must be a Grail knight. That's why Louis, son of Gilles, was not chosen by the Grail Companion at first (before his Quest).

  • @rellek4053

  • @HH-hd7nd
    @HH-hd7nd 6 месяцев назад

    Hm...the fall of Mousillon sounds a lot as if the writers have read a little too much of Edgar Allan Poe's stories - the Red Pox story is almost a 1:1 copy of the Masque of the Red Death. Not to mention that Maldred was obviously inspired by Mordred.

    I'm sorry but if they were going to retcon old lore why wouldn't you fix the end times???

    • @loremasterofsotek
      @loremasterofsotek  6 месяцев назад +24

      I heavily suspect the End Times will receive pretty significant edits eventually, if the Old World continues to sell well.
      But if by retcon you mean make the End Times not happen, there's really just no need for it. There's 10,000 years of Warhammer Fantasy history that can be explored, which is an OBSCENE amount of time to enjoy and flesh out. Plus the End Times needs to happen for Age of Sigmar to become established along with being the genuine and inevitable ending for Warhammer Fantasy.
      It'd be much more exciting to check out the rest of the world and the rest of the timeline!

    • @MySuperPowerIsITouchGrass
      @MySuperPowerIsITouchGrass 6 месяцев назад +9

      Warhammer fantasy wouldn't be Warhammer Fantasy without the threat of the end of the world. "Raging at the dieing of the light" is a major theme of both fantasy and 40k.

      @@loremasterofsotek I think, at some point, I'd like to see them have some kind of timeline fork to bring back the Storm of Chaos timeline as an alternate to the End Times. Not just to continue looking at more future possibilities of the setting, but because I think there was a lot lot LOT of potential in the threads laid out during that era that were never adequately explored.
      Heck, that kind of time foolery has already happened to undo the Storm in favor of the End Times in the first place! I do agree that there's way more history to work with that's barely ever been tapped, however, so maybe exploring that first is a better idea.
      They need to retcon the specifics of Thorgrim Grudgebearer's death _expeditiously,_ however. Just sayin'.

    Are you aware that the first new Old word novel GW released "Lords of the Lance" by Graham McNeill is full of WOKE and 3rd wave feminism ideology? It is all about multiple boss babes knights which school useless and incompetent men ("need no man" basically) and contains critique of feudalism (beyond cringe for supposed grimdark setting). Rainbow ponies and safe spaces probably coming soon? There is zero chance I will consume this kind of content or pay GW for their woke advertising.
