  • We have a HUGE lore dump in the rulebook regarding Estalia, Tilea, the Border Princes and even some ARABY lore. This is quite exciting as it does seem Games Workshop is hyping them up as possible armies for Warhammer The Old World! Let's discuss
    Interestingly they also call these areas the Southern Kingdoms while still associated with the Dogs of War. Was kinda hoping the name Southern Realms would catch on!

    No idea about their intentions. But both armies have potential.
    Estalia:
    -Myrmidia female elite warriors, "holy virgin Mary" tradition. Maybe an "angelical" female hero. Similar to Adepta Sorotitas. Also Knights of the Blazing Sun since they are canon.
    -Strong on Morr with the Inquisition, with a creepy aesthetic, expert combatants against necromancers and pagans.
    - "Montante" (Huge spanish zweihander) Morr warriors = See "Blasphemous" videogames. With "Semana Santa"/Holy week tradition.
    - Heavy armoured war dogs, like the ones that spanish empire used to have.
    - Bull herders (See San Fermín festivities) and Bull knights.
    - Matador (Anti-monster unit, inspired on bullfighters)
    - Duelists
    - Conquistadors (some of them with Lustrian mounts)
    - Meigas (Forest witches from the celtic part of spain)
    - Plague doctors (Spanish plague hello) support unit. Enemies of clan Pestilens.
    - From the mythological side, i would leave the roman mythology to Tilea, and i would embrace the Iberian/Christian one. Angels, Dragons, Stone giants/giants... there are a lot.
    - And of course tercio formation, pikes, and ambushers/partisans (hello Napoleon).
    - Notable characters to be represented: El Cid Campeador, Diego García de Paredes, Queen Isabel, Blas de Lezo, Don Quijote, Hernán Cortés...
    Tilea:
    - Just imagine what can you do here if you offer them the entire greek/roman mythology to them.
    I could put a lot of things. But just use your imagination.
    - Greek/Roman aesthetic warrior style. This never gets old.
    - Da Vinci crazy machines. Heavy on technology. Like dwarfs. They must have the most advanced human technology.
    - Masked assassins (Venice style)
    - Very big and fat popes of Myrmidia, in counterpart to Estalia. And special guard. "Like vatican guard".
    - Notable characters: Leonardo Da vinci, Giulio Cesare, Dante Alighieri, Galileo Galilei...

    • @MrSafior
      @MrSafior 7 месяцев назад +3

      For the mythological side of Estalia, you could add the Mourous and make them an offshot of the Dwarfs, with a focus on more traditional fighting style then their more technilogical northen cousins.
      Who the stone giant already, I vaguely remenber a legend aboot a castel builder giant, who in some artwork is represented has being in stone, but I forget his name.

      @@MrSafior That´s cool. About the giants, there are several stories. For example in the mediterranean side of the Iberian peninsule, there´s a legend about good giants who were the sons of the mountain itself and helped the "Bearded King" against an evil usurper: Tombatossals, Arrancapins, Bufanuvols, Tragapinyols.
      Their names translated are: Hillblaster, Pineplucker, Cloudblower, Pitswallower.

    When you say that you tet funny, giddy frelings about Estalia and it hitting close to home, I totally get the same vibes from Cathay. Im not super stoked about the immortal dragons that effectively have removed the warlord eras China was known for, but im still just happy to see something I can just point at with some familiarity and resonance

      @marconarvaez9871 7 месяцев назад +9

      I've got great hopes for Cathay, considering the potential it has with Chinese audiences. Hopefully the dragon primarchs thing will only be a part of it, and we get something about the mortals and their culture, too.
      They've mentioned constant rebellions, right? There's room for human characters in that.

    • @gilesbarnes7456
      @gilesbarnes7456 7 месяцев назад +6

      I get the exact same feeling as a Chinese studies student and on the point of removing the warlord periods. What I have noticed is we seem to have only really gotten the propaganda version of Cathay. The everything is harmonious and we are so good at defeating and pushing out Chaos and have no major rivals or rebellions which is the position the Dragons want but having read the short story the Master of the Meteor Wind it implies that this really is just a facade and Cathay has just as much problems with cults of all kinds and the Dragon Children have been known to fight each other at times not to mention various lords and kings pledged to the Dragon Emperor doing their own thing, like the Monkey King. So I think we will get a Cathay with more problems in the future and plenty of warlord eras.

    I really wish the Dogs of War would have gotten a Legacy Faction book covering the southern region. I am not convinced that Tilea and Estalia have enough different between them to give them each unique armies since even the lore mentions they use similar tactics. But Dogs of War would be able to be customized to fit a players fantasy when making a Tilean or Estalian army. They could even be used within the Border Princes as well.

  • @FairlySadPanda
    @FairlySadPanda 7 месяцев назад +41

    Making Estalia and Tilea feel different is going to be a real challenge for the developers when it comes to a Southern Kingdoms book. Estalia as a more traditionalist pike/crossbow/cav army with some naval flare, and Tilea as more of an explorer and arts/inventions style?

    • @TsunamiWombat
      @TsunamiWombat 7 месяцев назад +17

      The vibe I get is that each country feeds into it's neighbors.
      Estalia is sandwhiched between Brettonia and Tilea, and as such is a mixture of both - a decentralized network of petty kingdoms and fiefdoms that co-operates in general terms for their mutual benefit. They borrow the infantry formations of Tilea and the Cavalry formations of Brettonia (those famed horses probably migrated down the coastline in herds from Brettonia after the elves left, assuming there weren't elven colonies in Estalia as well). The Pike and Crossbow troops is a reference to the famous Spanish Tercio. Tercio's were one of the earliest forms of combined arms as well as professional armies (post roman collapse) as they were made up of professional volunteers rather than levies or hired mercenaries. Brettonia makes use of levies, Tilea exclusively mercenaries.
      Tilea, sandwiched between Estalia and the Border Principalities, is even more decentralized. Unlike Estalia which leans heavily on cavalry, it utilizes professional mercenary armies as well as irregulars such as the pirates of sartosa or skirmishers from the mountains and borderlands. Like the borderlands it's a place of adventure and opportuntiy, but also of familial connections and trade acumen like Estalia.
      The Borderlands is an odd one out due to being the melting pot of the world with influences from across the old world, very much a points of light/kitchen sink portion of the map. However it's immediate neighbors (in terms of humans) are Tilea and the Empire, and as such likely draws on a motley of influences from both.
      I can't really see Estalia, Tilea, or the Borderlands each being made into seperate factions however I believe an argument could be made for a 'Southern Kingdom's catchall faction that includes units and influences from all three. Units could be differentiated by special rule tags applied to him, such as [Tilean] or [Estalian] or [Professional] or [Mercenary] or [Outlaw]. these tags could cause special effects to other troops. For instance [Mercenary] troops traditionally fight harder next to a Paywagon, but you probably don't want your [Outlaw] Brigands standing next to it.

    • @boyanpenev9822
      @boyanpenev9822 7 месяцев назад

      I could see the two sharing some units, with Tilea having more tech and weird mercenaries like the Birdmen, Estalia having more of a cavalry focus and the border princedoms specializing in skirmishers and guerilla warfare. That said, since all 3 regions are noted several times to be very heavy on mercenaries, you would have the same core. A bit like - if we were to give the Total War equivalent - you have the faction packs of Rome 2 / Attila. You have similar cultures and a similar roster, but each faction has its own special units. In The Old World, what might be core or special for Tilea could be rare in Estalia, and so on.

    A catchall 'Southern Kingdom's' Faction that could include troops from these many regions seems very feasible from a mechanical as well as narrative perspective. This would essentially be the dogs of war but with standardized troop types rather than just regiments of renown, differentiated in their origins and culture by rule tags. [Mercenary] being self explanatory, [Outlaw] for hired on irregulars, [House Troop] for more loyal soldiers equipped and maintained by the actual character/faction, [Templar] for religious orders etc.
    This would also help for customization because your motley of troops could all be locally sourced (unified paint scheme) or could come from any number of places in the Southern Kingdoms (everyone is different)

    I wonder if a lot of this lore was written early when they were still thinking that the game would be all new factions, before they decided to go the current route? The earliest Almanacks were about a Kislev army, etc.

      There are several wargames featuring Rome already. You even have Warhammer Ancient Battles or however it was called.

I mean, Ind is on the map, there's lots of references to them including a Cathayan trade caravan location in Ind and they have a mocap actor doing Tigermen actions on IMDB. Before Cathay came out I would agree with you that it seems far fetched but honestly they have made Vampire Coast and Cathay as playable factions I think at this point anything is possible.
