      @@SisterofBattle The "Saviour of Bretonnia"s own peasants I'd assume would only have been loyal unto to him. Given the fact the he was also a Duke of one the original 13 fiefdoms, all peasants would've brought their taxes to his castle or the local magistrates. Knights went forth issuing the tax orders upon graceful steeds before having the taxes sent forth to the capital. Especially after he claimed Lordship of Moursilon and thus the curruption of the city of the damned began. Later it was raised to the ground after a savage civil war as depicted in this epic tale told by the Templetin Institute. obviously me pre-assuming they would've been put to the sword like in the last battles between the Crusaders and Jaffars Araby forces. The ones who fled and returned to live as the peasantfolk now in 'modern Moursilon' ever since the death of the previous Duke, what remains of Mousillon is a backwater region filled with marshes, bogs and misty swamps. Those people still living within the Dukedom are inbred and horribly mutated. Mousillon villages look poor and rundown, more so than typical Bretonnian villages. The peasant hovels are on the verge of collapsing, streets are little more than sewers, and there are as many dead animals to be seen as living ones. The inhabitants watch any visitors silently from their homes, cowering within and giving only occasional glimpses of their malformed bodies. No one rules this accursed land, for none wish to do so otherwise. Coachmen traveling with merchant's and bounty hunters, have even reported encounters and sightings far worse than the mutated common folk. Even Ratmen the foul Skaven; have been reported to local magistrates and regional feudal Lord's. If any peasants that dwell their that may be loyal to Bretonnia probably are or will inevitably be wiped out my the Skaven.

      The castles of the nobility also appear to be decaying, but here the appearance is somewhat illusory. Ruined portions are not unusual, but the parts that are still inhabited are always well maintained but never beautiful. The decaying corpses of gibbeted criminals hang outside most castles, fat ravens feeding on the remnants. The nobles all wear black armour with a helmet, and they never reveal their faces. Some are actually undead vampires wights and the same lord has ruled for centuries. Others are mutants, or servants of the Ruinous Powers bearing the marks of their lords. A few are simply human and need to hide that fact lest their neighbours think them weak. Adventurers do not need a reason to leave Moursilon. As for the "unholy Grail Knights" they would've been loyal to their leige in the fortress of Moursilon.

    Good work on mentioning the growing "middle class" of Bretonnia. It paints a much more complex picture of the dark fantasy setting of Warhammer Fantasy. I don't like it when the fans treat it as a pure grimdark setting.

    • @samwill7259
      @samwill7259 4 года назад +8

      I mean, regardless of that middle class, income or no they're still locked into a rigid social structure where none but those born into positions of power have any say in what happens to those below them. That's about as grimdark as it gets when you think on the implications. This is the same franchise and overall tone as 40K afterall.

    • @Kapita_Lismus
      @Kapita_Lismus 4 года назад +55

      @@samwill7259 Warhammer has always been dark fantasy over grimdark. Also considering the importance of the bretonnian navy(which is run by the merchants) they do have some overall influence. Especially in trade cities such as L'Anguille and Bordeleaux. I just despise warhammer fans that want to insert grimdark("100 gorillion empire citizen die every second because only war xD") where there isn't. Also Game Workshop themselves gradually made Warhammer Fantasy more and more grimdark and concluded with the shitty End Times. In general Warhammer is a dark fantasy setting with a few outright grimdark elements here and there. It generally didn't have the same tone as 40k. Stuff like witch hunts and strict class structure isn't even grimdark considering we had those in real life(it is definitely really bad, but it is not grimdark since the latter is more than just bad stuff).

    • @samwill7259
      @samwill7259 4 года назад +4

      @@Kapita_Lismus There is no difference between "dark fantasy" and Grim Dark, especially not in this case. 99.99/100 Bretonnian citizens live short, helpless lives full of nothing but poverty, suffering and enslavement. Yes, I know feudalism existed in real life but that's because feaudalism and all other authoratarianism is just about as Grim Dark as real life gets. The world or Warhammer Fantasy was doomed long, long before the End Times. This is 1984, but fantasy, the weak crush the strong beneath their boots because they're "born better" if that very *concept* doesn't invoke some sort of deep seated, powerful anger within you just as a human being with basic empathy, I think you need to examine that. Bretonnia is evil, as evil as the rat folk, orcs and chaos knights, they're just less honest about their intention or dominate, pillage and enslave.

      @Kapita_Lismus 4 года назад +36

      @@samwill7259
      Roughly speaking one of the main differences between dark fantasy and grimdark is that the former still has hope, good people ect. Grimdark is overly dark, sometimes to the point of parody and unreasonableness(which is kinda part of the fun). There are stuff in Warhammer Fantasy that is grimdark, but the setting overall isn't. Warhammer fantasy is known for its more self-aware dark humor too, something the grimdark 40k has time and time again neglected.
      Even if you can for some reason argue that Bretonnia is just as evil as the skaven and chaos, then you definitely can't do the same for the Empire, Estalia, Tilea, and say the high elves. The Empire is basically a fantasy version of the 16th century holy roman empires(with all its good and all its horrors). Even when it comes to bretonnia you can also see a very reasonable medieval society from time to time if you read the RPG books. A pure grimdark setting wouldn't bother to talk about a growing middle class, trade and culture.

Is bad, in all contexts, regardless of any other factors. The Bretonnians enslave, violate and harvest their helpless population in the same way orcs, chaos or skaven might, it's just that those are factions are more honest about their intentions.

    I actually had a mind cannon after finding out the truth of the Lady during the End Times story line. The short version is that lords and ladies are almost worshiped by the peasants they lead. This worship empowers them, and higher nobles are in turn empowered even further by the fealty of the lesser nobles beneath them. The King and Queen are there for the most powerful people in the Kingdom, both personally and politically. The Lady is the culmination of every past Queen, and the Green Knight is the culmination of every past King. Because the Kings and Queens are about demigods the combination of their souls, not to mention the reverence and worship of an entire nation, has elevated these gestalt entities to true godhood.

      Its Warhammer logic. Brettonian Knights have the literal blessing of the lady(more faithful and heroic= more plot armor as the Lady jills to them lol) Grail Knights also gain a small part of the Lady's power by drinking from the grail. Even a small fraction of the power of a deity is already a huge leap in power and durability. They become tireless fighters with perfect stamina and vigor hence they become literal one men armies.
      Basically each faction in Warhammer have some sort of Super Unit heroes. Orks have Black Orks. Brettonia Have their Grail Knights, chaos have their Chosen(also blessed by a God albeit a chaos one obviously) and so on.

      @FrightMask 4 года назад +16

      The lore the surround grail knights is pretty inconsistent since it depends on the actual writer.
      There were a piece of writing where simply a corpse of one of them was capable of repelling an army of undeads.
      On the plain martial power, they are confirmed pretty much on the level of chaos champions, so consistently above a chosen.
      They are living saints, the chosen ones of the lady to become the future human pantheon.
      Their usual kill count on an average battle is stated to be the same as the entire army that follows them (as ridicolous as it may appears).

Giving up 90% of the crops would mean the peasants would literally starve to death while the nobels would have SO much food they couldn't eat it before it spoils. There is a reason why in real history never that much was requested. - The same with conscripting the peasantry. That would mean there are no longer enough people to work the land, which would endanger long wars and the economy.

    Brettonia is take from the Arthurian legends, a French invention about a british kingdom that probably never was real, but seems to tug a certain glamour ontu people.

    The Knights of Brettonia are a class all of their own.
    They are philosopher warriors who serve the role they have been born in.
    The carpenter can not eat his chairs.
    The peasant cannot slay the monsters who swarm the woods.
    The Knight cannot feed himself.
    This is the union the Knights work under.
    9/10ths of what a peasant produce is immediately used to feed, house, and cloth the rest of the population.
    Without the 9/10ths rule, infighting, greed, and scarcity will consume the kingdom.
    An imperial will sell his goods for as much as he can.
    A Brettonian understands that his tribute is only worth what it is made from and the effort put into it.
    A Knight's life is not one of luxury.
    Theirs is a permanent state of war against the enemies of order.
    They spend all of their money in arming themselves, they spend all of their free time training.
    A Knights life is either short, or a legendary campaign of battles that will resound through history forever.

The video itself said that the taking of 9/10 of the crops the peasents makes keeps the peasentry poor, destitute and on the verge of constant starvation while being kept complacent and illiterate for their entire lives. In real life, this system condemned hundreads of thousands or millions of intelligence, clever, wise people to starvation, poverty and obsucity because of who their parents were, where they were born or what their gender was.

No nation "requires" a "birth right" of any kind to rally under, because a just and free enough nation will, by the nature of being just, free and fair, have people who are willing to fight for it. I give my body, heart and soul, to the Lady whom I seek. No plea for help shall find me wanting. No obstacle will stand before me. No evil will taint the lands bequeathed unto me. When the clarion call is sounded, I will ride out and fight in the name of Liege and Lady. That which is sacrament, I shall preserve. That which is sublime, I will protect. That which threatens, I will destroy, for my holy wrath will know no bounds. Honor is all. Chivalry is all.

      This answer about the social problems in Warhammer " hurr durr, chaos" is not just dumb, but escaping the meaning of the question, if you want to know just look in the golden age of technology or during the rule of the emperor when he is complete capable. Everything start to fall apart after the horus heresy, when the emperor coudnt hold tight anymore, the lousy habits of the mankind back, like greed, paranoic fear and fanatism.

      @@the_corvid97 yes but also the Emperor, some of his sons or Space Marines (like the Dark Angels) were neglected.
      People always forget that the light that shines the brightest also projects the longest shadows, the more the Emperor set "order" the more Chaos bred

      Late, really late reply but...
      Yeah, I agree strongly! I've never liked the whole "hurr durr it's always Chaos' fault" for why things happen that even tries to shake things up within the stagnant setting. Not everthing bad or different needs to be because of Chaos, that's super fuckin boring and irritating, it stifles characters and their own motivations and relegates potentially interesting dynamics to *"Chaos did it again, and it's probably going to try and end the world again, go stop it".*
