She shouldn't be blamed, but make no mistake, she didn't help it either. And for a film that people were already on the fence about (especially a musical re-make version), a stress and controversial free promotion was definitely needed.

Yes, I think that when someone does come up with a good idea, there's no money for it in Hollywood. As a true "minority in numbers" here in the U.S. they see us as not having the cash. But we have it for everything else.
And now I know why I was soooo into the early 2000's culture when I was in my teens. I couldn't see life getting any better in terms of the vibe, the arts and entertainment. People who knew me probably thought I was 'off' but now everyone can see that from the 2010's up to now, this ain't really it entertainment wise. Why can't they make a modern day Love Jones type movie, what happened to all those funny Hood movies and Black American romcoms? I really thought Think Like a Man was the beginning of a new generation of those types of films, but nothing much really came out of it.
Right! As a kid I remember the sadness in this movie, so I did not get excited to re-watch it even with an amazing cast. I'll watch it when it streams at home. I have Harriet Tubman on my Netflix list and still hesitate to watch it because of the sadness I know I'll see.

I don’t think it’s fair to speculate that taraji is going through financial difficulties just because she’s calling out unfair pay. Even if her bank account was bussing through the seams, she deserves to be paid fairly and it’s hurtful.
Quick tip don't make assumptions about someone's life. Just because Taraji was explaining why she felt the way she did it does not mean that she herself is going through something. It sounded to me that she was just tired from being abused by the production companies and taking that with grace, as she has mentioned in her interviews.

She pulls back a little...at least she tries...but then goes right back to her pattern and who she is. So once you realize that, you will just take it for what it is. Use your own brain and think for yall self. She sometimes states her opinions as facts...so you just gotta take it as is...an opinion. Try not to take it personally...cause I think most of the time, it's not with her...just what she honestly thinks. So it is what it is. I am sorry I do not instead of watching the movie people are wondering about the beef going on. Fantasia and other black actresses needed to be seen and heard as well. Taraji has been in this game for a long time. She did not just start feeling under appreciated. I was 2 years old when The Color Purple came out, so I was literally RAISED on this movie. Unpopular opinion: I have no desire to see this musical remake. A re-colorized anniversary remake would've been wonderful, but this remake was unnecessary and unflattering after all this. I'm 40 years old and have seen enough of the struggle; it exists in the archives for those who feel that it is necessary for our girls to see in perpetuity. But as a 40 year old black woman, I've had enough of the struggle narrative. I want new and modern storylines showing normal a-- black women as we are, right now, in this moment in time. Not as enslaved people, not as chattle and sexual relief to a share cropping man. We've shown that part of our history ad nauseum and some of us are tired.

Unpopular opinion but i think Taraji’s transparency was RIGHT ON TIME. She knew it was a risk but the cause was greater than the risk. She moving like she cares that there are younger black girls she wants to educate & give the right tools to in her industry. I respect that, especially since i don’t see that often from older women. Then the fact that this is during The Color Purple press run… of all movies.. Given what the original color purple is about, how could we not pay attention? . I understand Taraji's plight but it was not an appropriated time since it was around the launch of the remake of the Color Purple. It shows a level of conflict and it would be seen as bad publicity and in turn may negatively affect sales.

I’m not fond of her but you are correct. She spoke HER experience. Had she stayed quiet (since she’s not having that same experience), they would be attacking her for being quiet about it, and not standing with Taraji (the same way Taraji didn’t stand up for Monique). I will never forget when Taraji had folks riled up when she accused the police of racially profiling her son, and then video was released, showing the real reason that he was pulled over. People need to be careful instead of being quick to outrage, but showed zero outrage for Monique.

My fear for Taraji P is that her movie role offers might dry up. This movie got overshadow by her comments. Almost every headline during the promotion or red carpet were about Taraji being underpaid or Warner bros underpaying her or that the commendations were insignificant. The new reenactment of Color Purple already was going to be a tough sell, especially when going up against the original. Added negative headlines, probably turned a lot of people off… (not against her, but in supporting the movie). Movie studios might view her now as a liability.
Call me crazy but I think Taraji speaking out now was perfect timing. The hype about the movie was high, and her speaking about this matter caught everyone’s attention since everyone was paying attention to the hype of the movie. After the promotions of the movie died down, I highly doubt anyone would’ve focused on what she had to say. She got free publicity to say her peace. Which was smart whether it was intentional or not.
Perfect timing for her but not for the movie and everyone else involved in the movie (including the other actors)…which in turn, is not good for her future endeavors. So, basically, bad timing!
I don't agree. She created negative press against the movie. If the movie doesn't do well and production doesn't make the money back she will be blamed. This may also work against her if she is asking for more money. She may not be seen as an asset.

Who remembers when the original failed at the box office the first time Christmas 1985? They had to re-release it because no one attended. Oprah wore a purple dress, purple fur, etc and it bombed. What was the issue then? Who is the common denominator?
I'm a producer and while I work in TV not film (differences) it is in fact still Oprah's responsibility. Not pay, but issues on set. Even if she isn't the one that has to do it, she needs to see that certain things get done or put the right people in place. It's her project with her name on it, she doesn't get to ask why she is being brought up.
@@Lavi_407 they had a 100 million dollar budget. I do blame the studio but the producer of the film is responsible for the talent and that does include meals and transportation. I don't expect Oprah to order catering or give them rides to set but ensuring the best standards and practices are happening on her set is critical. And acting like it has nothing to do with her or isn't her job is unacceptable. May not be her fault but it's her responsibility. If this were a Tyler Perry film or equivalent producer/director, we would be looking at Tyler, because it's your set/show/movie/project/responsibility.
Thank You! I'm an Actor and I know there are things that can be negotiated in the contract, but minor necessities such as Security, Transportation, Housing, etc, should be a given. I've heard that majority of producers are making actors fend for themselves in regards to Flights and Transportation. No trailers or dressing rooms, unsanitary accommodations, it's ridiculous.
She is asking why because the internet is specifically blaming her about the pay. Additionally, she personally addressed and took care of every issue the cast had that was not about pay. That is why she is asking.

I will also say this. Oprah might have hurt her own box office success. My mom LOVES the original film and we tried to buy it at home (my mom is a full time caregiver for my grandfather so it’s difficult for her to get out) and the movie isn’t available to buy on streaming services. Times are changing, people want to watch movies from the comfort of their own home. Limiting the ability to watch at home might have decreased revenues as well.
I agree. If the new version were available immediately for streaming, I would watch it. I have no desire to see it in theaters, especially if it's as long as the original.
Taraji has been going through some personal issues for a long time. Prior to this not long ago she was breaking down in interviews over her mental health struggles and thoughts of unaliving herself. I think she needs to take a pause and focus on healing whatever she is going through, she is constantly breaking down in interviews and at this point it's a cry for help.
Vivica said she was cool because she always negotiates her pay and never settles. It happens when you know your worth and don’t need anyone to determine it. Be your own best advocate people.

The comprehension is lacking for this demographic. She never mentioned Oprah. She sure cannot mention the big, big names that are truly responsible for pay.
Vivica wasn’t even being officially interviewed when asked that question. She was in the middle of signing autographs, obviously on her way somewhere, was asked an off the cuff question by a reporter, and gave a simple response that was in no way offensive. If she had the time in a sit down full interview to discuss pay inequality at length, then she could expound on her answer. Otherwise people need to lay off her. And I support Taraji…she is A list actress, and deserves to be treated like such.
As great of an actress as Taraji is, it’s sad that she has to fight for what she’s owed. In the same breath the movie flopped and isn’t even recouping what they spent. I personally enjoyed it and WISH it gained more support and more money and it would back up her argument for higher pay.

This movie is not even on track to make back its production and promo costs. It needs to make at minimum $150M to not be a major studio loss that ensures they never invest in another black woman dominated film again. The studio knew it would struggle and was trying to contain costs but Taraji had to be a diva. And now she’s sabotaged the film with black audiences guaranteeing it will flop every demographic. Business illiteracy is our biggest downfall.

Most actors work 12+ hour days when filming so they dont have the time to do all that stuff alone After working youll be extremely tired And a lot of black actors are forced to work way more than big time white actors Vivica is in that bracket she is constantly working And doesnt have kids so money she would have need to spend on her kid / kids like Taraji she probably spent on her self So of course she would be good I feel she should have declined ti comment because her fellow actresses womt support her if she ever changes her tune Hollywood doesnt forget

Reason being if she is set up as a company for example, is she had a company, Taraj Enterprises LLC , then her money would be revenue to the business then all expenses would come out associated with making the business a success cost of goods etc. She would draw a salary and dividends, but more importantly the taxes would come out of the gross profit which would be then amount after her employees and salary and cost of running the business has been paid.. In a world where costume designers who are the head of a department and is 75% women is the lowest paid department in the film industry Taraji is 100% on point. We have to go in and start at scale rates on every negotiation not matter how many jobs we’ve done before.

I think the experiences Taraji had while filming was the straw that broke the camel’s back. She probably thought she wouldn’t have to deal with those issues on Oprah’s watch, but when she saw it was no different that had to be highly annoying and hard to hold in.

Honestly the movie did not fail because she spoke up. People who would choose not to watch it because she said that, probably wouldn’t have watched it in theaters anyway. I think its more the fact that going to movie theater is expensive af and no one really wants to spend there money to watch a remake of another great movie. The highest grossing movies this year were largely original movies that were already getting buzz or hype from there ip. Wen people can barely afford groceries they aint gonna recalibrate there whole finances around a remake they can watch on streaming services in a couple months.

I just don’t understand why we need remakes, especially for the Color Purple. It’s makes me question the intention and purpose behind remaking this movie.
Oprah is a high-achieving woman that has broken so many records and set a new bar of success for Black women. But with that, she has become accustomed to a certain level of benevolence from people and expecting people to trade exposure from her for their talent and time. She’s taken it out on this cast for sure.
No, she’s just a woman who understands that business isn’t a charity. This movie is not going to make back it’s inflated production costs. This is WBs first loss maker of 2024 and while it was always going to struggle to make its money back, it didn’t help that Taraji and Co decided to play diva. Most movies don’t give you a chauffeur unless you’re at RDJ level. My entire career while we were location, I was picked up and dropped in a van and by the way, Woody Harrelson would be in those morning vans with us. Is Taraji bigger than him? DIVA.

What is even more crazy is that movie extras and stand ins are covered for transportation, meals and boarding. Taraji has every right to bring these issues to light because something is amiss and it isn’t right. All of the latter protocols are already in the mix, it isn’t something that someone, especially studio named actors, have to even ask for. Ex. My senior citizen aunt was a reoccurring extra in Selma (she never has starred in a movie and is a retired nurse. The entirety of her senior citizen building was asked to participate). Although she lived 2 blocks from where every thing was being shot, she was still provided Kraft services, transportation to and from set and a wonderful trailer. She didn’t have to ask or negotiate that.
Color Purple is a great book and was a great movie. Black women want to move on though. No more struggle stories. We're tired of slave dramas, old South tales, inner city struggle documentaries, etc. It seems like that's all Hollywood wants to show about Black people, and we're over it. 4 biggest cities in the racist US of A have African-American mayors. We've done better than any other racial group that has come here, taking our history into account. We want happy stories.
Black people have NOT done better than any other race/ethnicity in America. We lag in socioeconomic indicators. We are low in home ownership. Our educational outcomes are subpar. Our health outcomes are the absolute worse (mortality, prevalence of disease, etc.). Are there Black people doing well? Of course. The success of the few is overshadowed by the lack of success of most. African-American mayors are indications of progress but we are behind, really behind other groups of people.
Just because Vivica said Taraji's experience isn't her experience doesn't mean they're not cool. This exactly how drama start's Vivica said nothing wrong. She gave her love n said I don't have the same issues

This movie was absolutely amazing. I haven’t seen anything like it in a long time. Taraji, Danielle, and Fantasia deserve an Oscar for this film. It was recreated in the very best way. I laughed, I cried. Every time Fantasia opened her mouth to sing it made me feel something! I really hope the bad press doesn’t cause the movie to flop, because it deserves all the accolades. Every actress and actor put their all into this movie and need to be paid as such.
I get wholeheartedly what Taraji was saying but the fact that she was literally crying on EVERY interview/press conference was a bit much and i would think very unfair and a bit uncomfortable for the rest of her the cast mates.

Taraji has done NOTHING wrong. Don’t blame her for the failure of this damn movie. Most people I know thought the movie was only out on Christmas because the trailer initially said “only on Christmas Day,” which was horribly misinterpreted.
This reminds me of "Don't worry Darling" - the drama completely overshadowed the movie and it was clear that this wasn't done for the gp, but more so to self-serve the people making it. I see a lot of people being turned off and saying "nope, will wait till this one's on streaming instead".
I don't think it's fair for anyone to feel like someone's pain/frustrations should be aired when they feel like it should versus the actual offended. If we went on what others think is the best timing, it'll never be the right time. But let it be about ourselves and have someone speaking on when we should fight for ourselves and all hell will break loose. Let's do not do this to these people.
Taraji needs to expand her acting roles and projects outside of black Hollywood. She needs to demand that she’s paid what she’s worth going forward. She should have waited until after the promo to discuss pay inequities. Other black actresses need to demand to be paid what they are worth as well. This musical was phenomenal and I loved seeing it in theaters. However, The Color Purple was heavily boycotted by the black community when it came out in the 80s and it hasn’t changed now. I think this version (and most movie musicals) would do better on streaming services. Many people just don’t like musicals and won’t actively go out of their way to watch one in theaters. This isn’t Taraji’s fault at all.

Quick tip don't make assumptions about someone's life. Just because Taraji was explaining why she felt the way she did it does not mean that she herself is going through something. It sounded to me that she was just tired from being abused by the production companies and taking that with grace, as she has mentioned in her interviews.

I was 2 years old when The Color Purple came out, so I was literally RAISED on this movie. Unpopular opinion: I have no desire to see this musical remake. A re-colorized anniversary remake would've been wonderful, but this remake was unnecessary and unflattering after all this. I'm 40 years old and have seen enough of the struggle; it exists in the archives for those who feel that it is necessary for our girls to see in perpetuity. But as a 40 year old black woman, I've had enough of the struggle narrative. I want new and modern storylines showing normal a-- black women as we are, right now, in this moment in time. Not as enslaved people, not as chattle and sexual relief to a share cropping man. We've shown that part of our history ad nauseum and some of us are tired.

My fear for Taraji P is that her movie role offers might dry up. This movie got overshadow by her comments. Almost every headline during the promotion or red carpet were about Taraji being underpaid or Warner bros underpaying her or that the commendations were insignificant.
The new reenactment of Color Purple already was going to be a tough sell, especially when going up against the original. Added negative headlines, probably turned a lot of people off… (not against her, but in supporting the movie).
Movie studios might view her now as a liability.
Call me crazy but I think Taraji speaking out now was perfect timing. The hype about the movie was high, and her speaking about this matter caught everyone’s attention since everyone was paying attention to the hype of the movie.
After the promotions of the movie died down, I highly doubt anyone would’ve focused on what she had to say. She got free publicity to say her peace. Which was smart whether it was intentional or not.
Perfect timing for her but not for the movie and everyone else involved in the movie (including the other actors)…which in turn, is not good for her future endeavors. So, basically, bad timing!

I'm a producer and while I work in TV not film (differences) it is in fact still Oprah's responsibility. Not pay, but issues on set. Even if she isn't the one that has to do it, she needs to see that certain things get done or put the right people in place. It's her project with her name on it, she doesn't get to ask why she is being brought up.
But…there were 3 other producers. And I’m sure the studio has power over the producers.
@@Lavi_407 they had a 100 million dollar budget. I do blame the studio but the producer of the film is responsible for the talent and that does include meals and transportation. I don't expect Oprah to order catering or give them rides to set but ensuring the best standards and practices are happening on her set is critical. And acting like it has nothing to do with her or isn't her job is unacceptable. May not be her fault but it's her responsibility. If this were a Tyler Perry film or equivalent producer/director, we would be looking at Tyler, because it's your set/show/movie/project/responsibility.
Thank You! I'm an Actor and I know there are things that can be negotiated in the contract, but minor necessities such as Security, Transportation, Housing, etc, should be a given. I've heard that majority of producers are making actors fend for themselves in regards to Flights and Transportation. No trailers or dressing rooms, unsanitary accommodations, it's ridiculous.
She is asking why because the internet is specifically blaming her about the pay. Additionally, she personally addressed and took care of every issue the cast had that was not about pay. That is why she is asking.

I will also say this. Oprah might have hurt her own box office success. My mom LOVES the original film and we tried to buy it at home (my mom is a full time caregiver for my grandfather so it’s difficult for her to get out) and the movie isn’t available to buy on streaming services. Times are changing, people want to watch movies from the comfort of their own home. Limiting the ability to watch at home might have decreased revenues as well.

Taraji has been going through some personal issues for a long time. Prior to this not long ago she was breaking down in interviews over her mental health struggles and thoughts of unaliving herself. I think she needs to take a pause and focus on healing whatever she is going through, she is constantly breaking down in interviews and at this point it's a cry for help.
I really felt that she was depressed and the issues on set just angered her more. No shade to her but the drama soured the anticipation for the movie.

Vivica wasn’t even being officially interviewed when asked that question. She was in the middle of signing autographs, obviously on her way somewhere, was asked an off the cuff question by a reporter, and gave a simple response that was in no way offensive. If she had the time in a sit down full interview to discuss pay inequality at length, then she could expound on her answer. Otherwise people need to lay off her.

This movie is not even on track to make back its production and promo costs. It needs to make at minimum $150M to not be a major studio loss that ensures they never invest in another black woman dominated film again. The studio knew it would struggle and was trying to contain costs but Taraji had to be a diva. And now she’s sabotaged the film with black audiences guaranteeing it will flop every demographic. Business illiteracy is our biggest downfall.

This is WBs first loss maker of 2024 and while it was always going to struggle to make its money back, it didn’t help that Taraji and Co decided to play diva. My entire career while we were location, I was picked up and dropped in a van and by the way, Woody Harrelson would be in those morning vans with us. Is Taraji bigger than him? DIVA.

What is even more crazy is that movie extras and stand ins are covered for transportation, meals and boarding.
Taraji has every right to bring these issues to light because something is amiss and it isn’t right.
All of the latter protocols are already in the mix, it isn’t something that someone, especially studio named actors, have to even ask for.
Ex. My senior citizen aunt was a reoccurring extra in Selma (she never has starred in a movie and is a retired nurse. The entirety of her senior citizen building was asked to participate). Although she lived 2 blocks from where every thing was being shot, she was still provided Kraft services, transportation to and from set and a wonderful trailer.
She didn’t have to ask or negotiate that.
A wise friend once said "The less the better." Meaning you will risk alot speaking the truth. It will either elevate you or demote you. Love you all!
Color Purple is a great book and was a great movie. Black women want to move on though. No more struggle stories. We're tired of slave dramas, old South tales, inner city struggle documentaries, etc. It seems like that's all Hollywood wants to show about Black people, and we're over it. 4 biggest cities in the racist US of A have African-American mayors. We've done better than any other racial group that has come here, taking our history into account. We want happy stories.
Black people have NOT done better than any other race/ethnicity in America. We lag in socioeconomic indicators. We are low in home ownership. Our educational outcomes are subpar. Our health outcomes are the absolute worse (mortality, prevalence of disease, etc.). Are there Black people doing well? Of course. The success of the few is overshadowed by the lack of success of most. African-American mayors are indications of progress but we are behind, really behind other groups of people.

My mom used to say: "A closed mouth do not get fed". Taraji wants to get paid what she's worth, same as other actresses with a similar resume. WE all want what's fair. As for Oprah? Be glad there is someone they can call OVER the studio executives to get things worked out, that folks is a queen move.

That’s great if they paying Vivica right she been in the game too long to not too. Taraji had an issue with pay and on set low budget things that didn’t sit right with her. Learned in life every job you go work for will not always pay right or benefits be perfect. Taraji has now cleared it up saying Oprah was able to fix those issues so that’s great to hear. 💕

This movie was absolutely amazing. I haven’t seen anything like it in a long time. Taraji, Danielle, and Fantasia deserve an Oscar for this film. It was recreated in the very best way. I laughed, I cried. Every time Fantasia opened her mouth to sing it made me feel something!
I really hope the bad press doesn’t cause the movie to flop, because it deserves all the accolades. Every actress and actor put their all
into this movie and need to be paid as such.

The industry just doesn't care about Monique as much as Taraji. When Taraji was crying on that stage the audience was giving her so much sympathy but had that been Monique they would've shrugged. Taraji has done NOTHING wrong. Don’t blame her for the failure of this damn movie. Most people I know thought the movie was only out on Christmas because the trailer initially said “only on Christmas Day,” which was horribly misinterpreted.
This reminds me of "Don't worry Darling" - the drama completely overshadowed the movie and it was clear that this wasn't done for the gp, but more so to self-serve the people making it. I see a lot of people being turned off and saying "nope, will wait till this one's on streaming instead".

Taraji needs to expand her acting roles and projects outside of black Hollywood. She needs to demand that she’s paid what she’s worth going forward. She should have waited until after the promo to discuss pay inequities. Other black actresses need to demand to be paid what they are worth as well. Monique been warning black actresses for years no one hears until it happens to them.

This musical was phenomenal and I loved seeing it in theaters. However, The Color Purple was heavily boycotted by the black community when it came out in the 80s and it hasn’t changed now.
I think this version (and most movie musicals) would do better on streaming services. Many people just don’t like musicals and won’t actively go out of their way to watch one in theaters.
This isn’t Taraji’s fault at all.
