"It's difficult to talk about the art of Donato Giancola and remain objective. Despite the best intentions to be analytical and coldly disaffected when standing in front of his art...it is simply not possible. There is so much passion, so much depth, and so much truth in Donato's paintings that the viewer can't help but get caught up in the stories his works tell. Simply put, among contemporary narrative artists, Donato Giancola is a master. Watching him paint "Joan of Arc" merely drives home that fact."

Donato Giancola is one of my idols, so this video is like Christmas and my birthday together. Excellent job on the cinematography as well. It is hard to adequately show the beauty in the love that an artist feels for his art.
This is so beautiful! I have to show my daughter this video, she loves to draw and this will encourage her to persue her ideals. Thank you for uploading, its breathtaking and very inspiring.
As a painter, watching this is what gets me high.
Really good. I love his work. She is my favorite Saint. His paintings are so realistic.unbelievably beautiful and good.
I've just bought this DVD and am really anxiously waiting for it to arrive! I hope it lives up to what I want it to be...
How did it go? Did you learn alot from the DVD?
@@KennyGsca I learnt so much! Not only from Donato but also his study of the Masters, it was 8 years ago now but the knowledge is still fresh 😉 👌
hen it comes to things to choose from you cannot choose extras, but in my opinion everything you might consider as being an extra, such as talking about art, coffee break, Donato's life, history, muse and inspiration are all compacted on the actual dvd as he talks as he paints, it really helped me and I'd tell anyone who enjoys art and wants to learn much more about it to watch it!
@gryffonx1 The music is by Drew Barefoot, available on iTunes. If you like this track you'll enjoy the whole album.
Masterful craftmanship. Truly beautiful.
greetings from the model of your cartographer. i found this video purely by chance but over the years I've often checked out your web site. I love your work and this video is a treat. Thanks for posting.
OMG those details!! and those pens... there are a lot
I love this Artist, I enjoyed the other paintings he did and saw on my Twin Georg’s channel.
Wow, Wow, Wow....I just didn't this video to end, an amazing and beautiful work of awe inspiring (and very envious ) god gifted talent. So beautifully shown, and I shall always look forward to seeing your future masterpieces.
Such beautiful art! I love Joan, it's a lovely depiction.
This is probably my favorite painting of Joan. However, she never said the quote attributed to her at the beginning of this video. The words are not in her trial transcript. The quote was adapted from a passage in Maxwell Anderson's play "Joan of Lorraine," the source for the 1948 film.
I love this. As an artist I'm totally inspired to raise the bar for myself. Thanks
I lovely painting, loved the video.
As a painter, painting is what gets me high.
I bought it! It's brilliant! Perfect timing too, it arrived when I was ill and bored with the flu, four hours of video!
More like 4 minutes bro
This may very well be my favorite painting of yours, and I can watch you create it.. Awesome!!!
amazing!! thank you for showing us a sample of the techniques put into a work like this

Sin palabras MAGNIFICO

ImagineFx also sent me here, absolutely amazing! What do you put on the canvas at 0.40 before you start painting??
Nicely done. Definitely planning on getting the DVD.
One question: Does anyone know the music in the video? It sounds like Explosions in the Sky, but I don't know if that's right or what track it is.
Hey Donato you're great..... I suspect that the italian tradition leave in you great painting... Please let me know only which medium do you use and how do you prepare your canvas. thanks and good work from italy

Shut Up And Take My Money!
this is awesome!
Can anyone tell me what the artist coats over the penciled image around 0:35?
Oh I see. Thanks for answer. Very nice video btw.
hey novice question here ; after pencil work he's applying an almost transparent stuff over it before going for the oils. I guess it's to protect the pencil, but what it is?
Thanks
Pierre Demet matte medium
its matte medium, its there to provide a seperate layer from oil to graphite as the graphite tends to contaminate the paint.
Matte medium, like a varnish vor acrylic paint?
великолепно рисует.
Will this be available as a digital download?
is donato painting medium onto the canvas first or does he mix it with the paint?
Is it just the dvd or does it come with any extras?
Im wondering about your reference. Is it some photo of yours or what, actually? Thought you dont use any.
Does anyone know where I can find an easel with a similar kind of wrist guard, or at least what this type of easel is called? Thank you.
3 words: Oh My Gosh !
What has drawn on the pencil?
I know, I wish I could afford to buy it Y___Y
Would learn more in four hours than I have in three years doing Fine Arts at TAFE Y___Y
Digital download options?
Anyone know where I can buy this DVD in the UK?
Fucking insane.
when you paint on linen do you use gesso to prime it 1st or directly on the linen ?
never paint directly on linen, gotta prime your surfaces
Oil or acrilycs?
dario dol oil
wonder what the photo reference looked like
I know this is an old comment, but for you or anyone you else who reads this... Yes, you can see the photo reference a little on the video. But the DVD is great and shows you more, and much more importantly, you can see how Donato conceived the painting in an imaginative abstract way, then how he got models to bring it to life, and then how he compiled how references together to really bring his concept together. All that work up front really pays off. I used to think illustrators were just so good that they made it all up, but seeing Donato do it this way showed me how many great artists really build paintings.
It's a good DVD and pretty cheap for an art video, I'd recommend it. And no, I don't work for them or get any commission, I'm just a fan of his.
@@KEP1983 So he made his own photo reference? It was not from a movie, a photo taken from internet or anything?
@@kaiqueamorim1 yeah, it was his own reference. First he made a bunch of thumbnails from his imagination. The final composition was pretty similar in an abstract design sort of way, but nowhere near fleshed out. After he decided his idea, he got the costumes, hired some models (who were actually just his illustrator friends), took hundreds of photos of them, then put it together in Photoshop. It wasn't just a single snapshot, it was a combination of many photos (I forget how many he said, but it was quite a few I think). He made sure the position and lighting was consistent in the photos, so he was able to mix an arm from one photo, a head from another, whatever.
@@kaiqueamorim1 hopefully this link works here www.muddycolors.com/2012/12/roman-legionnaires-its-all-in-the-reference/
Joan of arc looks like Jennifer Lopez. Lmao
The music was quite nice, but I'd rather've heard what the artist was saying.
mondern artist are great pantographs or printers...lol
Remove the music please...otherwise gorgeous!!!!
Now all artists are only copycats...Be creative ,create your own imagination like painters, masters they did..😉😆
mondern artist are great pantographs or printers...
The old Masters used reference. They were called live models, and in the 19th century they started using photos.
Old Masters didn't just "make it up." They came up with an abstract concept from imagination, yes, but then they hired models (usually their students or assistants) and had them pose for the paintings. They had elaborate setups to hold people's arms and legs in positions that you couldn't normally hold them in for action poses. They also used plaster on drapery and put them on mannequins to keep the drapery from moving.
Not good enough.. We want a download version like ‘the mechanic’ please.
This is bull I can't afford a $50 DVD. I live a on a teacher salary. (using my daughter's account Don't @ her)
Whats the point of that stupid effect that covers the whole image with a semi transparent rainbow?? Nice video, except for that
That rainbow overlay shit was super annoying and getting in the way of your beautiful fucking painting. I recommend never adding that effect again, it got in the way of watching you beautifully color your painting
this is cheating! he is using a photo for exact copy and not for reference! So disappointed in Donato.
kek
honestly I understand that
