I read an article that said the Wilburys were talking about inviting Del Shannon to join them, but he committed suicide before they could ask him. This recording was made as a posthumous tribute to Del. At least, that's what I read. I didn't make notes about where and when I read it.

I remember on Saturday afternoons me and my 4 brothers would load up our acoustic guitars and small drum set and would ride out into the country and stop at small town parks and play just exactly these same types of songs man that was beautiful times.
i was in pre-school when these guys were rolling out their first album and as a 4 year old, i remember telling my teacher they were my favourite ...real musicians to be cherished...

It was my understanding that when 'Runaway ' was released as a single for Del Shannon - it was selling 80,000 copies a week! That wouldn't happen again until The Beatles. I can only guess he never lived up to to that success - and expectation- who could in that era-he truly deserves his place in the R&R Hall of Fame - what a great talent and a tragic loss - thanks for this tribute and the effort on your part...
He also had a hit with "Hats Off To Larry," which reached #5. A few years later, he had a hit with "Handy Man." It's a shame that alcoholism and depression took him from us way too soon.
Del also had major success with "Little Town Flirt", "Keep Searching", "Stranger In Town" and "Hey Little Girl". Del also wrote "I Go To Pieces" for Peter & Gordon and "Too Many Teardrops" a minor hit for Gene Pitney.
I was an early teen when this song was playing on my am radio (77, WABC, out of New York). Del Shannon was the 'bomb', but kudo's to the "Wilburys", great cover (and so was the rest of the album).

The Travelling Willburys existed because they all loved and respected George and they wanted to play with him
I believe it was in the liner notes for the box set which included this cover -- but Jeff essentially said this wasn't released at the time because he couldn't locate a working version of the instrument for the musical interlude -- years later he discovered e-bay and now owns a half dozen of them.

The original acorn of an idea for Sgt. Pepper was the Beatles fantasying about going out under another band name. Playing small clubs with no fanfare or craziness. Just having fun like the old days. Sometimes I think George came a little closer to that with the Wibury’s.
A good friend of mine saw Del Shannon back in 1963. Guess who opened for him? A very young Bob Dylan. When I learned that I suddenly understood this connection between the Wilbury's and this song and Del
Back in the late 70's Del was playing in a club in Hyannis on Cape Cod. He would invite people up to join in with him. After each person was done he would tell the bartender to get them a double shot. Well I waited for the right song, got on stage with him and played mouth. I was a mean mouth player. When the song ended he turned to the bartender and said " get this guy a triple shot ".
The hard part of gettin' old is watching all the musicians whose music I loved so much die off over the years. Sad to think that of all those guys in the Travelling Wilburys and Del Shannon,only Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne are still alive. I truly wish Roy had been given another five years to record with this super group.

I remember seeing Del Shannon playing live out of the back of his vehicle in San Francisco. God knows those were the good old days for sure.
I remember reading that Del Shannon was supposed to be a member of the Wilburys. He died, though, before they cut their first album. RIP Del, Roy, George and Tom.

The original acorn of an idea for Sgt. Pepper was the Beatles fantasying about going out under another band name. Playing small clubs with no fanfare or craziness. Just having fun like the old days. Sometimes I think George came a little closer to that with the Wibury’s.
A good friend of mine saw Del Shannon back in 1963. Guess who opened for him? A very young Bob Dylan. When I learned that I suddenly understood this connection between the Wilbury's and this song and Del
Back in the late 70's Del was playing in a club in Hyannis on Cape Cod. He would invite people up to join in with him. After each person was done he would tell the bartender to get them a double shot. Well I waited for the right song, got on stage with him and played mouth. I was a mean mouth player. When the song ended he turned to the bartender and said " get this guy a triple shot ".

The hard part of gettin' old is watching all the musicians whose music I loved so much die off over the years. Sad to think that of all those guys in the Travelling Wilburys and Del Shannon,only Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne are still alive. I truly wish Roy had been given another five years to record with this super group.

My dad always listened o then in the mid-late 1980s, and I didn’t care for them. Now they’re one of my favorites. All of them individually so crazy-talented and then together even better.
