Amazing that it all came together. Big stars almost always make for big egos. Big egos usually bump into other big egos when in the same room. This obviously didn't happen. The art rose above it all.
Think about it. Bob and George grew up idolizing Roy, Jeff and Tom grew up idolizing Bob and George. The Wilburys represented the first three decades of Rock...Rolled into one band.
Roy cranked up what was to come in the following decade with powerful feeling and the best voice ever. Bob added authenticity, depth, creativity and artistry. Our beloved George was loved by all such as those who wanted to play on stage with him, being so devoted, with a higher world view and being so deep with spirituality and wisdom he is the ultimate leading us into a new world. Tom religion was music and he gave it all in whole hearted way. One's like these who have laid their body down (as said in India) have their passing like bookends. Nothing like making peace with life!!
They were the very definition of a super group. 5 men, all on the Rock and roll hall of Fame for their individual talents, blessing us with great music. RIP Roy, George and Tom
I wish they banded a few years before they did. They were actually A Supergroup that played Pure Rock. Glad they did accomplish what They did. It's definitely worth listening to.
How do you mean that? And isn't George a super human being led from within? Seem that with George I've been staying close to since before our worldly births.
i like in the video for "end of the line" they filmed the video after Roy died and to honor him when he sang his part they just showed an empty chair where he would have been
Jeff Lynne was the biggest piece of the Traveling Wilburys. What a freaking good producer, singer and songwriter he is. Tom Petty said this: " Jeff Lynne is the best overall musician i have ever met". The best Super Group ever just having fun at making great music.
What I believe is important for any band is that in order to work together, the bandmates must be floating on the same boat. They know they're working together as a unit to create a specific sound, but they also have similar interests too, and their efforts can compliment the other. If a super group were to be made for example consisting of Freddie Mercury, Jimi Hendrix, and John Bonham, they wouldn't work because their areas of speciality are different. Freddie's into Opera, Jimi's into Psychedelic Blues, while Bonham plays Hard Rock. Luckily, the Travelling Wilburys all have common interest, and accept their limitations, and work together to create a cool sound
I remember hearing in the day that the group wanted to skip the stress of doing a second album following very successful first album so they went straight to album 3. Cheeky and cool.
One interviewer asked George why they went straight from the first album to album number three. Why wasn't number three called number two. George said " We haven't done that one yet." It's amazing how such great talents can be so down to earth and easy going.
These were giants of the rock and country music which was then welded into a fully superior group who could not be bettered. What a brilliant group of people!
Nothing like having a group of talented musicians/songwriters/friends coming together and making music together. You can hear the simple joy that was The Wilburies in the albums they put out
loved it... love this group... way way underrated these days,, never hear them on the radio... which is a damn shame. 5 mega stars,, coming together.. .making ...music.... zero drama.. and Everyone in the band was a Fan of Everyone in the band not sure we see a group like this EVER come together again.. Egos today are the size of Mt Rushmore..
Still considered one of the finest drummers in the world, is though of as the 5th Beatle and aka"Buster Sidbury" in George Harrison's Traveling Wilburys. He played with SO many of the GREATS. Was under contract so didn't have the fame playing with George and the ex-Beatles.
"Handle with Care" wasn't recorded for a B side, but for a "C" side for a limited European release 12-inch. I wrote a novel about the recording of the first Wilburys album called Five Legends Five Guitars that combines fact and magical realism.
I was there that night they recorded HMWC all in one evening at Westlake studios May 1988. GH had a cute blonde groupie clinging to his shoulder, Tom was totally stoned and Dylan was passed out from the weed. I shit u not. :)
You left out Jim Keltner…..the drummer who worked with Harrison, Lennon, Starr, Orbison and Dylan. He’s been on more tracks than anyone in this particular room.
Mixing ultimate talent created an ultimate album they cobbled together doing a song a day, presented with a lack of ego, and always concerned with friendship over any fame. Outstanding, and a classic that will live forever. Free and open, they focused on great music...
Sometimes, no matter how hard you try to screw it up. shit just comes together and works. I'm kind of glad it never became a tour. The mystique is part of it's charm.
No words to express the comfort, simplicity but THE AMAZING TALENTS shared by these men! And what an easy fun for them and JOY for us! RIP those that had to leave us and blessings for those that remain. Thank you for such a blessed reunion
Roy and Barbara appeared on the cover of PARADE mag winter 1986,and there was report of Roy's warning/heart attack,so I turned to action because knowing the myth of Elvis dying in misery 300 lbs in Vegas I wanted Roy to have his comeback, and wasn't going to give up,being a 29 yr old ghostwriter for Star Trek (1987) and songwriter for some local fave bands(Delaware/Philly area). I knew I could ghostwrite good or even great songs for Roy's comeback putting my heart in it.Man with a mission, aimed like a missile.
This group was ordained from the magic universe of music...So sad Roy had to leave so soon man..but he couldn't have had a better send off .. his spirit was Rocking in the chair of..End of The Line. A marvelous soulful presentation thanks for posting.
It took 4 Beatles and George Martin to accomplish what Jeff Lynne has done musically all by himself. Of course, by popularity and commercially, The Beatles are no 1 but musically Jeff Lynne rules. I am a huge Beatles fan but Jeff Lynne is better with Harmonies, Orchestration, as an incredible Producer, singer and songwriter. Long live Jeff Lynne's ELO!!! Please Tour in 2022!!! ELO-Beatles Forever!
I like the channel already, but i must say this video for me its the best here. maybe because of the good vibe this band had, even with the sad passing of Roy. Its not an enciclopedia of the band, sure many others things could have been added, but summed their story well, had some infos i never heard and was a joy to see this, thanks. The Wilburys were just great.
i think its hilarious that the liner notes were written by Michael Palin from monty python. we all know about george's involvement with them but apparently roy was also a great fan.
I never thought of myself as a George Harrison fan but in retrospect I suppose I am. I bought All Things Must Pass in 6th grade, he was instrumental in making some Monty Python things happen and, well, The Wilburys are without equal. Thank you George.
It was great to see Jeff and Tom appear together at the Concert for George. I don't know why Bob didn't appear (maybe he was unavailable). To see all five of them would have been incredible.
I loved the Wilbur "Brothers". Thank you for the background info on the group. Your information was different from the standard history of their collaboration. All in all, I wish more older music stars would get together for some fun loving music!
Wonderful ❤ my era 67-Living in NY Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynn, Tom Petty… you left out Steve Winwood my favorite… to play over and over everyday “When My Guitar Gently Weeps and feel the core of the magic of Tom Petty, Prince, Steve Winwood and Jeff Lynn. Love the story of the formation of these artist to play and have fun…it is about time we all play. Traveling Willburys Volume 1 and 3 As well stay tuned “ Naomi” Volumes I , II, III and IV
Great video about a great band. I love how you crack up laughing after reading all the fake names they gave themselves as that made me laugh as well. Merry Christmas to you, your family, and your channel's production team.
1:25 Umm yeah... I was busy playing drums in my college band at the time, so I had to turn George and Jeff down....Bad career move? Haha! Actually at this time me and a couple band mates WERE asked to become “Raiders” for Paul Revere and the Raiders for a handful of gigs in the Midwest. Unfortunately, I did have some kind of out of town commitment at the time and I had to decline though I urged my band mates to do it without me but they wouldn’t. I REALLY wish I could have done the gig!
They wanted Del Shannon to replace Orbison. They even recorded Runaway and were expecting Del Shannon to join the project by 1990 when Del Shannon took his own life.
I have watched all your Beatle videos and love them all, but now you are getting into an entirely different stratosphere talking about the Wilburys! My all time favorite artist is JEFF LYNNE. You can do an entire show on his production of the Beatles, and Beatle solo projects. Whatever you do, More Jeff Lynne please!!!!???
There is a vol.2. It's a bootleg of rough versions/mixes of vol.1 material and came out shortly after it. The Wilburys knew about it and decided to acknowledge it, hence the second official album is called vol.3 :)
They had ten days of studio time, so they had to write a song in the afternoon, rehearse it in the evening and record it the following morning. No stress - just six friends having fun.
Not alone anymore is the best song on Volume 1. Prove me wrong. I don't say that lightly. There are of course very strong songs on there, but Roy blows them all put of the water with this one.
I love them . I just watch d the doc about the making of the album; enjoyed .Always have. I have a cassette on 1. ha! yeah. All I have. Still listen to it. Have 2 old cars My Cadie has the best stereo. I think Red,my ElDo,,enjoys the tunes . ❤❤
I wonder what vol 5,7and 9 would have brought us. when they make " handle with care , end of the line, and Tweeter and the Monkeyman " , I wish there was more
Liner notes for Vol 1 written by Michael Palin (Stationary Wilbury's...) Liner notes for Vol 3 written by Eric Idle They loved Monty Python. Apparently Roy Orbison could quote whole Pthon scenes at will!
This is bullshit. The was George Harrison told it on the true story of the band, Jeff was out to dinner with Roy Orbison, and invited George to tag along. They needed to go to a studio and went to Dylan’s house to record. On the way, George stopped to pick up a guitar at Tom Pettys house, and Tom tagged along. From the mouths of George Harrison, and Jeff Lynne.
FACT # 11: George Harrison and Tom Petty both got to work with famed under commercialized legendary music visionary and producer Lucci Calabrese at Westlake studios on Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood May 1988 while recording their hit song Handle Me With Care.
Enjoy the video everyone!
Always love your videos. You put so much time and care into your research and presentation, and it certainly is appreciated!
This super group IS sheer magic! Thx for this video! 💖💖💖
GEORGE HARRISON
Long gone days project update??
The Geo wink 😳
Six legends! Dylan, Harrison, Lynne, Petty, Orbison, and Keltner!
Keltner never gets enough credit. Sooo talented.
Jim Keltner aka Buster Sidebury

The ultimate "super group" in rock history
You obviously have never heard of the Dirty Mac lol
Any kind of music... This guys are the justice league of super groups
I wish they banded a few years before they did. They were actually A Supergroup that played Pure Rock. Glad they did accomplish what They did. It's definitely worth listening to.
Which is exactly what George was not trying to do. Go look at the Countdown interview with George. The Wilburys were actually an anti-supergroup.
These guys are famous for not being able to sing.
RIP Roy, George, Tom 💏💕 maravilloso Traveling Wilburys ❤️
Jeff Lynne is an otherworldly human.
How do you mean that? And isn't George a super human being led from within? Seem that with George I've been staying close to since before our worldly births.
i like in the video for "end of the line" they filmed the video after Roy died and to honor him when he sang his part they just showed an empty chair where he would have been

Just totally awesome musicAl artists. Everyone in this group are my favorites. So sad many are gone now. Truly heartbreaking
Surprised you didn't credit Michael Palin for the funny liner note. The Python connection was another aspect of George's sense of humour :-)
