    • @nathund1
      @nathund1 2 года назад +12

      @@PlanetHell67 well I mean think about it rationally: while the fast strike is probably faster, the difference is minimal to non existent considering its like an 8th of a pound vs like a full pound. While that's not gonna be a noticeable difference in speed, it IS a noticeable difference in weight and potential energy, and therfore the amount of damage it can do. Plus, ignoring the (in my opinion) effectively worthless tiny spike, you swing that big ass stinger at someone's head and actually connect, that's lethal force for sure. Plus the stinger is longer and more reach is just good.
      The stinger is just better in every scenario thanks to its versatility and higher potential damage to end a fight quickly

    Can't resist the challenge even a year late.. a self defense tool's purpose is to help you safely extract yourself (and/or others) from a situation where life and/or safety are threatened whereas a weapon's purpose is to do damage / facilitate an (offensive or defensive) attack.
    Of course, there's a lot of overlap between the two, and any object can serve as either, however, some items will be more suitable depending on your intent with the long term legal impact likely being top of the list to evaluate in most situations ;-)

  • @MrChubbiful
    @MrChubbiful 5 лет назад +16

    This is interesting from a fencing/HEMA(Historical European Martial Arts) perceptive. Lead hand vs. rear hand. If you have a sword with a hand guard, you can stand with your dominate hand leading. Which gives you range and speed. No hand guard, you switch to dominate hand in the rear, to protect your hand but this also can give you more power and allows you to defend or grab with your leading hand. Small fast cuts(jab) or large swiping cuts(cross).

I left about 16” of the cable sticking out the other end. Be careful when you are using it, the end of the cable could hit your own wrist or fingers.i swing it in a circular motion away from your face and body .happy building

    The Stinger has the Kubaton end that automatically makes the SD tool illegal in some states like mine in MI. The Faststrike whip looks so bland, and I love that. It's underestimated and you can really conceal it, so perps won't see it coming nor think it's effective when it is. It's that psychological element and its practical design that makes the Faststrike better for self defense IMO.

      I saw a brief clip of a police training scenario where the cops used their bike as a shield/self-defense weapon. They would grab the bike by the bars and seat, and hold the bike up towards the assailant thrusting the bike towards them to maintain space. Maybe hold up part of the bike by the bars with one hand to maintain space between you and the assailant and strike the assailant with the weapon in the other hand. Could make an interesting video.

      Basically the kubotan is seriously only effective on its own in very limited situations. In its standard form, its effective if you are attempting to restrain and control a subject that isnt trying to attack YOU. Its not really effective if you are being attacked. Think about being a bouncer on jerry Springer, you have someone who doesnt want anything to do with you and is just trying to get to someone else and you are just trying to hold them back. You are likely bigger and better trained than them and just have to between them and their target. And in that case you likely dont need something like this and by the time you have optimal position to actually use a kubotan you have 99 % control of the situation any way.
      Now, how is a kubotan effective for personal actual self defense use?
      In the form of something like the ASP key defender product.
      It is a standard form factor kubotan. But it has some additional features to it that make it a little more useful. Though you really need to know your areas weapons laws before you go using one or carrying it.
      One, it is a solid billet of aluminum. The non striking end has a brass pin with a hole drilled in it for the placement of a split ring for a keychain. Additional items can be added to this. Like a monkey fist or a huge fishing weight or whathaveyou. Anything basically with mass and hardness. This now becomes an effective short range flail.
      The real bonus feature is inside though. Its hollow. Inside is a jumbo sized perfume tester type canister filled with pepper spray. The brass pin is actually a plunger that is secured with a plastic half collar that is fairly easy to slide out and then press the pin down. The plunger presses against the bottom of the canister and that pushes the valve stem on the canister open. The stem rests in a little nook on inside of the striking end, there is a tiny little through hole that it feeds, when depressed, it emits a misty cone of peppery goodness that is good for about a yard to a yard and a half.
      Both end unscrew for replacement and cleaning.
      This puts the tool right on your keys, puts it in your hand when you need it, is securely attached to your keys and is a pretty demure tool from a legal perspective. You are lucky to have had it when you needed it, your mother got it for you as a gift and you just used it to protect yourself when you feared for your life.
      That fishing weight is a gift from your grandfather. Or the monkey fist was a fathers day gift from your son you made those for boyscouts or something.

  • @DocTarnation
    @DocTarnation 5 лет назад +6

    The most important question: What is the likelihood of losing control of the weapon in a self defense situation? --Like Jay did when it went flying out of his hand. Because, losing your weapon or having somebody take it from you is a very good reason to not use one. Especially a concern for smaller, slower or less agile people--i.e.: the people who would probably have the biggest need for a weapon.

    I believe the Fast Strike was designed primarily as a tool to allow a potential victim to quickly get away from a would be assailant rather than ending the fight. A couple of well placed strikes (to vulnerable areas) will certainly buy enough time to escape, and definitely discourage most from resuming the assault. (I carry one, and practice often with it. The price point of each item make this an easy one fellas: Fast Strike for when you are out and about and The Stinger you keep in your car or home or shed. I can see using the stinger effectively against a range of wild animals, as well. One solid smack would send most critters running for the hills. I always have a knife on me when I'm in the woods, but a non lethal option (that's not a big stick) would be nice. Plus, the stinger in your car is good for breaking out your or someone else's window in an emergency.

  • @Zoco101
    @Zoco101 4 года назад +3

    The Stinger looks fantastic for under a shop counter or in a car door pocket. The First Strike looks better as a ccw, and I'd consider carrying one if it were rougher here (it's blissfully peaceful) and if I could import one. Dunno if I can.
    But in Europe you're really better off with a walking stick (preferably oak with a stubby handle) if you can be bothered carrying one. It has a longer reach, it's more explainable, and it's more impressive in the eyes of an aggressive dog. And it's also useful as a walking stick on light country walks.
    But I get it, these are urban tools, and it sucks carrying a walking stick everywhere round town if you don't really have a bad leg or hip. How about building the Stinger into an umbrella, a handbag or a scarf?

  • @matthewwoods632

    I’m gonna extend a much less informed opinion on the question weapon vs self defense tool:
    A weapon’s intended purpose is to cause damage (i.e. harm/disable a target), while a self-defense tool’s intended purpose is to provide a deterrence or an opportunity for escape (inflict pain). The difference is in the amount of damage caused and the goal of doing so.

    I like the fast strike because it is light, compact, and the polymer wrap around the tungsten coil is dark, making it easier to conceal.
    Despite its seemingly smaller size comparative to the stinger, it is potentially *lethal* but it will drop a big man to the floor and make him scream like a little girl, long before you might have to do much damage.
    The stinger could get someone in trouble because of the connotation of “intent” so be very careful how you choose.
    BTW, I whacked my thigh with the fast strike and fell to the floor screaming like a little girl.

    I see this as an equalizer, ie an assailant pulls a weapon themselves, to level the playing field. This would be great to crack hands and wrists with, along with tender elbow joints and soft targets. Doubt most folks could hold a weapon after getting either of these sjambok whippy style tools slapped against their knuckles, fingers, hand or wrist.
    Also, if there are multiple attackers, a surprise deployment could give you a striking advantage in both damage capacity and slightly more range.

    I had the same idea as the stinger co when I bought the fast strike. So
    $2 bucks at home depot and some paracord wrap, and you get to dial it in to your arm. And, technically in California (yeah, shut up, I know, family...) the metal tip of the fast strike makes it a mace instead of a whip, while the metal in the cable didn't. Also, the Stinger has a kuboton in it, so that's out too. BTW, if your bag has a zippered expansion gusset, these whips fit in the dead space nicely

    On your first video with the Fast Strike, near the end of the video you started using more of a whipping action with it, like popping a towel, and at the time you seemed to get better results with it rather than by just slashing at the target. I imagine this is due primarily to the metal tip? Or are there some physics involved that assist with the efficacy?

      So there is some timeline fuckery with these videos. You are very observant. When we first started with it we started trying to swing it like the stinger. When I started flicking it like a jab in this video was the end of that day of filming. There are two videos from the same 2 days of filming so that's what you're picking up on.

    I carry the Fast Strike for my self defense needs. |It's imperative I have good concealment while carrying on with everyday life. it was super easy to attach on my shorts when going to the fair without a purse and it didn't impede any of my movements. I also got through concert metal detectors and they looked right past it when going through my purse. \I think it looks less threatening than the stinger and is just overall easier to carry.

    Either one would be a good defense against someone with a knife, before they get too close, to keep them away from you. You would be striking them in the face or the arm that the knife is in. Thanks for the demonstration gentlemen!

      1) a person with a knife is not going to show you that they have a knife.
      2) a person with a knife is going to kill you, they don’t care if they get a little hurt while getting it done.
      These things are completely pointless against any kind of real attack.

    This is not the first video where I've seen the Stinger... I am an Arnis practitioner and I did in the initial video I saw it in, go straight to thoughts about how we would use it as a baton/kali-stick analog.
    It would be employed somewhere between how we use a knife and how we use a baton, having lost some of the defensive capabilities, but amplifying our mid and long-range baton strikes potential for damage.

    So Mike, what do you recommend for those with physical limitations and or physical handicaps for self defense. What techniques, products/weapons would you recommend? I think this would be a great subject for a video. I personally had a really bad motorcycle accident and was left with a few limitations (definitely not my old self). I actually studied martial arts since I was 13 yrs old, taught hand to hand combat to police, worked as an executive security agent for a while, and although I've had a few moments where I had to still use my skill set, I often wonder "If I still can properly defend myself" even with nerve damage, lack of strength in my left arm, can't run nor jump because of permanent injury to left leg and knee. I mean, I've defended myself physically, yet I know my limits. I already did my research and own a Taser Pulse+, haven't had to use it yet, but it does give some peace of mind. Yet, in the moment I tend to forget I have it and resort to hand to hand (because out of habit and I know my shit). But I also know my limitations as my father taught me every man should know what he's capable of and what he's not capable of. I'm 49 now and over the yrs physically I've changed, and it's only down hill as I get older, thus I must learn, adapt and over come. But I can't have a firearm nor do I feel that's always the best response. Anywho, just a question and a thought, hit me back with your thoughts on it and or make a video bra, lol. I'll watch it for sure.

    Mike I wouldn't put the whip down my pants chance it falling out or stabbing me. If your carrying something like that it's because you think you might need it. Try up your sleeve, a sweat band will help keep it there and some cloths most hoodys have like elasticy cuff by the wrist to help keep it there. Drop it into your hand for a quick punch, you could use a spiky part Hammerfist or whatever or you could just grab it with the other hand to get a full swing of the whip. This is all just theory of course but it's something to try

    I just got a Stinger for Father's Day, Wow, can I feel the power as soon as you hold it. Great for those who hike in hills and rural areas as would be awesome protection from a coyote, wild dog, maybe even deter a mountain lion. A bit over kill to carry on normal neighborhood walks unless in a real rough neighborhood, but like Mike said there may be legal ramifications if you can't show law enforcement you had to use it in that situation. The Quick Strike is too small, seems a weaker person wouldn't get much velocity out of it. *They need to find a "middle-range" to have a more perfect self-defense tool. Don't get me wrong, the Stinger is really impressive!

    Hey Hard2Hurt. Like your video and opinion on these tools. Especially how you differentiated the differences on what it is comparable to(baton and knife). I also think people need to decide what they are using it for. I get it they are for self defense, but at the same time depends on person. I believe the smaller(fast strike) of the two is is more of a deterrent like pepper spray, alarms, tazers...etc. Also for people with lack of self defense practice and training while still able to do some damage. May sound funny, but I was thinking it could be used like whipping a towel. You can get those fast popping snaps with some extra reach. Then as it being flexible can add another type of attack if being blocked by something. Kinda like fighting a bo staff against a 3 sectional staff. 2 similar weapons, with very different attributes as one being hard and one a soft weapon. As for the stinger... I would consider more of and offensive weapon. Seems like you would have to be more committed to using it since it is longer and more hefty, but also keeping in mind that it will really mess people up. I mean that thing will shred flesh and I am pretty sure it could break bones too. Yeah, I guess if you wanted to choose you would have to decide if you want to let person know leave you alone and mind their business then get out of there then go with the fast strike. If you are a larger person and the fast strike may be too small or want to just fucking annihilate someone with a few strikes then I would go with the stinger.

    A baton can be caught. This VERY likely wont be caught due to the inmense pain.

    The fast strike looks just like a bikes brake line but the brake line comes with a steel wire as a core and has a metal tip and that even in a light hit can and will cut you, but this one does not have that metal tip . The stinger is just plain evil you get hit with that (a real hit not the light tapping you are doing) and will also cut you plus the added weight length and speed are going to mess you up a hit in the face and you can blind the attacker or take an ear off

    Make no mistake, steel whip about 1M long and about a thickness of your thumb IS a deadly weapon. I wouldnt suggest hitting somebody with it without intention of seriously injuring or killing your target.
    Gangsters used to have them around here during the 90's. Its quite easy to make. Find a steel cable and some duct tape for handle and youre good to go.

  • @InstinctiveRelfex
    @InstinctiveRelfex 4 года назад

    the difference between the the two is you might get a faster velocity with the fast strike, but it won't have the momentum and follow through of the stinger. Best analogy I can come up with would be calibers from bullets 5.56mm has a higher velocity and accuracy to its impact 7.62 more penetrating power and impact. Not the best way to compare the two I know but in terms of just trying to find a good comparison it works I feel.
    With things like this is all about the mass of the object and the velocity of it, can I swing this as fast as the other? If so, then the only way to get more out of it is to increase mass.

    The thing about the heavier cable model. Lot of upsides to it but the handle should be smaller and easier to conceal. I just don't see carrying that around. Where are you going to put it? How often do you really need a glass breaker? How many times do you want to take the point of the glass breaker in stuck in your skin? The design could be refined. Does the handle even need to be made out of metal at all? Polymer? Maybe a flexible handle that would curve around your waist or something. It will be less effective as a fighting tool but you will have it with you when you need it.

    I suggest you take the fast strike apart and fill the handle scales with epoxy metal. This reinforces the handle and adds a little weight into your hand.

    In Russia the police/cossacks still use nagaika, which is basically the same thing as the stinger.
    Idk about these things from a self defense perspective:
    1) you would have to practice consistently with it to deploy it and be able to use it effectively (same as any weapon)
    2) you would have to actually have it on you all the time
    That being the case they fall into some awkward middle ground in terms of efficiency, they are almost certainly not the most effective tool for effort/time, and they don't provide any extra utility other than pain compliance. Unless they are the best option due to legal constraints, which is pretty unlikely with the way that weapons restrictions work, I don't see the point.
