This is core to quality training and we are all low on time! Being able to convince someone to submit is a slightly different skill-set, but extremely valuable! I believe that intuiting the situation and responding in the best possible manner is ideal, but it is not a perfect art or science. Accurately parsing the situation and determining the best response to said situation, is ideal and what we mean by wisdom. Plan for the worst and hope for the best. Learn to have the courage to trust heart. Learn to have the sense to follow your gut. Work hard for yourself and your loved ones
@@TreyYork1 I would like to say, what you've said is 100% correct..👍 Only thing I would like to add to this is that: This is one reason why everyone should do cardio training weekly.. Because in the moment your mind might get cloudy, or the adrenaline kicks in and can be confusing to how you'd think about best ways to respond to which situations.. It will help you to keep distance until you can figure out the best course of action for the situation.. Remember also, running or walking back/away(never take your eyes off someone being hostile) is better then getting into a fight with a person who you don't know what diseases they carry or what they've got in their pockets(lots of drug addicts tend to carry needles and glass pipes😱).. Stay safe and God bless you and your loved ones man..👍❤️👍
yea till you meet the mofucka who's hopped up on PCP... that shit turns you into a literal zombie.... you ever seen the guy who was out of his mind on PCP and got shot 19 times by a cop but just kept coming until the cop put one in his head
True that getting attacked by a random meth head is much less likely than getting attacked by a friend, acquaintance, or family member. But to be fair, some people are friends, acquaintances, or relatives of drug users.
Also in some areas of the country people live in close proximity to meth heads. I went to college in Springfield, MO which has a huge meth problem and college students would live in apartments next to meth users/houses and it was a serious problem.
I had an argument ina Facebook comment section about family members stealing from each other that made me change my perspective. My final comment to her was "not every family has a thief, but every thief has a family."
This week, I really had to use these self defense skills you've talked about. I work as a manager for the returns desk in a retail store. A man walked out of the bathroom, threw a can on the floor, punched out a sign, and knocked over a mannequin. Customers we pulling their children away as he ran up the escalator to the jewelry department. Without any in-store security on duty, it was me and another manager watching the guy. Our protocol is to try to service the customer to make them aware of our presence and to pressure them into leaving. Without a martial arts studio, I haven't practiced any sparring, but I learn boxing through VR and shadow boxing. I had a pen, a flashlight, and a pocket knife. He saw me approaching as he was looking out for witnesses. "What the F*** you lookin at? Who the F*** are you? Yea, you ain't sh**! Get out of here f*****." Though my striking is basic, I use deescalation every day in returns. Keeping enough distance to draw if necessary, I was able to talk him down. He was menacing towards me, but with other coworkers behind me I was the only thing between them. He feinted a blow. Maybe it was instinct, maybe a calculated risk, maybe fearful paralysis, but I felt like if I pulled something from my pocket I would destroy my chances at deescalating. He didn't come closer, and he backed off. He did end up stealing a pair of sunglasses, but he didn't hurt anyone. I know that a lot of people would have handled that differently, and I'm open to criticisms-this is my first self defense situation. I know some people won't believe this actually happened. But on the off chance that you do read this, I want you know that your lessons may have kept this and many other situations from being much worse.
So long as you had the space to defend against his feint if he’d committed, and not just be surprised by it, it sounds like you did good. If his feint got close enough that you think he would’ve hit you had he committed, make that the lesson and use more space while your palms are up. At the end of the day you weren’t hurt.
We need to get creative to de-escalate trouble. You did a good job, and you live to fight another day. Someone else in these comments said that they just yell, "Cops!", in the vicinity of trouble, and they scatter like cockaroaches.
Verbal Judo has been my go to as a security guard. There has never been a situation I couldn't talk out of. Being good at de-escalation got me promoted so fast. And I can guarentee you those sunglasses or any "goods" will never be worth the risk. You have a valuable skill there.
This actually happened to a UFC Light Heavyweight called Anthony 'Lionheart' Smith, he was under a home invasion and said this average joe meth head took every punch, knee and elbow he could give and kept fighting. Crazy
@@ChrisLoew i had an ex that was big into bath salts. After we'd been together awhile, she said I could stop using protection. I said, I think you're great, but I'm not getting in the bed with you without the tazer and goalie mask.
This is what has to drive the choice of tactics. Even a meth head needs oxygen supply to the brain. A rear naked choke is one of the few viable solutions for dealing with a drug affected attacker.
That situation was a harder fight mentally than physically, his interview states the fear he had through the entire encounter. Not knowing if the offender had friends or weapons, in your house with your family there is unreal levels of fear.
Just want to conceptualize "crackhead strength" for y'all. Stimulants seem like they increase the strength of the electric signal that goes to your muscles. My ability to compress and squeeze things on high doses of addy is increased by a substantial degree and I don't really know why. It doesn't translate to everything, mostly just squeezing and creating crazy amounts of tension. This is someone who works out regularly and doses recreationally once a month though, probably would be different for a guy who's been up for 9 days with just cough drops to eat.
I saw an episode of Cops in Vegas where the cop was talking about foot chases with meth heads. He said they're fast out of the hole, but their cardio is no bueno. If track had a 20 yd dash, they might medal, but that's it.
@@mctransportation9831 I saw an an episode of cops where one officer who was on the verge of retirement throw ALOT of shade at a teenage punk he chased down. he was like 'dang son, i'm old you shoulda gotten away easy!" and whatnot. guy was a hoot. Also, the vegas episodes are some of the best. Those guys deal with all sorts of crazy.
I was assaulted once in my life, and this was by a drugged up person. I was just standing around in the middle of the day when all of a sudden someone punched me in my head from behind. Lucky for me he just went away after that attack. It took me a while to process what just happened. To that day i have no idea what was his motivation.
@@lalli8152 or a drug person. Might have happened before the ko idiot game. I hardly have my hands down when on the streets unless carrying something but I try to keep my power side free and put down heavy things to do that observance before continuing on my destination
Could've just been the drugs. In Toronto, they've had a problem with drugged up people pushing other people in front of subways and stabbing random people. It's messed up.
@@bigguy7353 Yeah man, it depends on where you live. I live in Albuquerque which is one of the most crime-ridden cities in the country and I was jumped and severely beaten by three complete strangers in a middle-class neighborhood with no warning whatsoever. They came up asking to bum a cigarette. They were also obviously strung out on some kind uppers. To this day I have no clue what the motive was. My guess was some sort of mugging attempt which went south when I fought back long enough for witnesses to arrive. I lost half a retina in that beat down. Which is essentially half an eye as far as your vision is concerned.
I had a prison guard friend tell me they used pepper spray enough that most of the guards and the most violent inmates were “accustomed” to pepper spay and could cope with it and fight through it. I have no way of verifying that anecdote, but I found it thought provoking.
You can build a resistance to pepper spray given that the active ingredient in most OC sprays are capsaicin. That being said you're a glutton for punishment to train your resistances to it lol I did it with my cop buddy since part of his training is going through a live scenario all while being sprayed in the eyes. My conclusion, I really don't wanna be sprayed but with training I guess you can fight through it. It still sucks though
It's true, during my lockup I ate more pepper spray and pepper balls than you could imagine. Now it just makes me mad and gives me more strength. The only thing is if enough gets in your eyes they still water profusely and limit vision.
Correction officer here. Pepper spray is a deterrent, but will not stop someone really determined to get at you, but it is at least usually legal, and available. Expect to get about 1/2 as much spray on yourself as gets on your target. And yes, it feels like your skin is on fire. Also agree that wrestling or CQC training is surprisingly effective. 62 years old. Been in 20 or so Use of Force, only went to ground when it was my own choice.
I was sprayed with a pretty huge amount of pepperspray once by the cops, it hurts and it disorients you, but if you have enough adrenaline and if you are pissed off and determined enough, you can get through it. I ended up being shot because it had no apparent effect on me.
I actually have an unreasonable amount of experience in dealing with those sorts. Grappling works well. They aren't thinking far enough ahead to win and it's blocking joints and restricting movement instead of just causing pain. From there it doesn't matter because you have control.
I really like the Q&A format. It’s good to hear questions from people with little practical experience; like me. It’s kind of like in class how good teachers will tell you. “Please ask questions. If you’re thinking it, others are likely thinking of the same question.” Or a similar scenario that had the same answer.
When i was a kid i was talking to my dad (a police officer) about collapsible batons and he said he'd rather carry a monadnock solid baton. and his Reason was for guys on drugs. Now to be fair as a police officer he faced a heck of a lot more bad guys on drugs than average but his point still remains. He said collapsible batons are great for regular folks but don't do anything to those on drugs who can't feel the pain. A solid police baton on the other hand is designed to break bones. So even if you can't feel the pain you still can't chase me with a broken leg.
Yes yes Mike. More Cop stories please. Unless you don't want to. Cuz I am sure there are others like me who really enjoy them, and thank you for the service.
When my wife feels like a suspicious person is entering her vicinity (a block away) she just yells “COPS.” This is the universal language for criminals to run. I’ve seen a crowd of people gathering to watch a bar fight and this one word dispersed the crowd and the guys fighting just became best friends.
Nothing beats a concealed weapon for defending your self. The older you get the less strength you have. However it is extremely important to learn different ways to fight!
A weapon is useless if You can't draw it in the right time and if You can't fight, you can't access your weapon. The attackers don't stand still doing nothing like the paper targets at your range

@@Boog8 You don't need your windpipe to hurt someone. You are describing something unpleasant, not disabling. Why would you say windpipe anyway? You know what else is in the WAY of the windpipe? The chin. If you can hit someone in the windpipe, you can hit them in the chin, and unlike the windpipe, hitting someone in the chin is a knockout. Even if you were to stab me in the trachea, I wouldn't go down right away. And then you'd sit there in shock, struggling to align your adrenaline-addled brain to new information after being SO SURE that all it takes to stop someone is a hole in their neck. Even a carotid injury gives him time. You are fantasizing.
If you are out gardening, have a long shovel around and use that. Fiberglass handle and stainless blade for rust proofing so it can be stored outside. Conceal on low roof eaves or otherwise hidden just out of sight. Nobody fucks with a shovel for more than 10 seconds, just like a halberd.
Don't bet the farm on that. I've never thought about it until I saw this comment, but I have probably seen more shovel involved conflicts than most. Two in the neighborhood as a kid, three when I was doing irrigation (digging ditches and lot), and one at a BBQ restaurant. In the last case, the shovel had been used to clean out a septic tank, so that was gross.
Perfect lockup... lots of practice.... be aware of your surroundings at all times as well... Walk in a new building, kinda sweep the area looking for exits, windows, and out of place ppl... it becomes 2nd nature. And attempt to deascalate the situation, before stepping up to assault. Sometimes they might be looking for a dollar for food or drugs whatever, not a confrontation.
Yep. I have one friend in particular who always argues, and says derogatory things. I'll never talk to again! On a scale between one and friend, forget about it.
Really good points and well said. I struggle with this in my efforts to use less lethal force whenever possible. Drugged individuals are just on a different level regarding pain compliance. I really like your way of thinking about this difficult issue.
Great content boss. As retired cop, I appreciate to info you are providing to John Q Public. I really gives folks a clear understanding of how violence and self defense must be taken seriously. Thank you for the work you do!!!!👮🏾♀️🥋🦉🇧🇷🇯🇵
Hearing firsthand from someone who folks have seen to be trustworthy and logical from the dozens of hours we've followed the channel is just better than the guy at the store who heard from a guy. The fact you could kindof quantify the level of super-strength he had when he didn't look like he could hold back all those arms with just one is incredibly helpful because it came from YOU and not because it's an entertaining story in this context. Your channel is very well-put together.
Aside from substances, in my experience, people having psychotic breaks / extreme mental health crisis also at times are not susceptible to pain compliance. I have seen a few instances where use of pain compliance causes individuals who are in crisis / under the influence to fight / resist even harder.
Yeah, I agree! I used to train a lot of pain compliance techniques. Some where very cool! My folks whipped us with fly swats and belts and it turns out belts and hard whips like fly-swats and better yet car antennas do a great job on some folks. It feels great until it doesn't work and then it's a rough adrenaline dump and rougher time controlling the situation(sometimes just attempting to control it) I martial arts in some styles of Kung-Fu. The "chin na" pain compliance techniques, were pretty reliable while we were training. In real scenarios it's a toss up. I've seen pain compliance techniques, at least, work as setups in mma-- so, I guess, we need to look at how high the percentages of their effectiveness are. It might be possible to determine within a very high probability who is susceptible to techniques like that and who it is unlikely to work on. It might be worthwhile to understand those profiles and teach it
Great video! I agree with everything. I have been through the Army CS chamber twice. I have been sprayed a few times. A good spray in the eyes is worse. It's not the pain. It's the swelling of the eyes. One has to do what I call blink fighting. I have fought a few chemically altered individuals. Chokes are the easiest way to shut them down. Throws that knock the breath out and cause a diaphragm spasm have also worked for me. Punches and even breaking fingers and wrists failed. I have also dealt with meth heads. A big issue is that they stay up for days. And they have very little connection to reality. I stayed up 3 or 4 days once in military training. By the end, I was hallucinating and falling asleep while walking and talking.
Working in the security industry as I do here in the PNW, I often am posted at extremely scummy homeless shelters, and so I've been involved in multiple fights with the aforementioned crazed methhead. It is true grappling and knowing how to use your strength and weight against them is the best course of action. Pepper spray does not work as well as it does on a sober person or do tasers. The nice thing is the good majority of them are pretty thin and weak due to not eating and staying up days on end but they don't respond to pain well and so knowing how to grapple is imperative.
Knowing how to throw them or deflect them is good, but as a bouncer of 20 years, do NOT attempt to hold them. They will bite and claw you open, and who knows what diseases are in their mouth and under their fingernails. A prolonged grappling situation with them is not optimal.
Awesome to hear "war stories" it gives real perspective to what you are telling people about. When you can give them the real breakdown of why you know what you know, it gives you more credibility and it strengthens the bond between viewer and poster. :)
Love the q+a's, I live in Belfast Ireland, recently people smoking crack has become a big thing! We are allowed zero weapons, not even pepper spray, I have decent boxing but am definately gonna look in to learning some sort of grappling........ thanks for the advice Mike, love the channel.
After I started teaching my wife, I drop all the pain compliance stuff. Attack an opponent's structure and function. Autonomic responses are also more reliable than pain compliance.
I appreciate the Q&A format. We have had a crack & cocaine epidemic in my country since the 80's as a shipping hub. It makes people superhuman versus pain. I've seen my Dad hit an Addict off a Wall ( with a Pole) and the person just got up and walked around like nothing happened. Since then I know not to mess with Addicts. But now as I've become a grappler...indeed no O2 to the brain and it's lights out for anyone...And the police are happy when the unconscious is easily restrained :D
Portlander here. You handled this masterfully. We are pumped full of crap on the news and Nextdoor that makes us misplace where the real threats are. Chances are the person asking lives in a pretty safe area and has nothing to worry about, we pretty much just have one VERY bad neighborhood to stay away from but otherwise most crime is property damage. All that said, people need to FEEL safe and this video helps people find that.
Thanks Mike for the videos, i really appreciate the tips man. In my country carying weapons in the street is ilegal except you are a cop, military, security etc. So when you are in the streets weapons are not a choice... ive been thinking of a pepper spray but idk if a whackhead would really care and as you said, if i end fighting the other person it can become a mess. What i do is simple: prevention. I dont stand out with my clothes (not wearing fancy stuff), watch and cellphone in my chest pocket and never out (or anything important like credit card), i keep my eyes open always and alert for any suspicious thing. If they come for any reason try to ignore them or talk yourself out. EG if they ask for money i say something like "nah sorry bro im broke too" or a cigarrete: "i was about to ask you for one". Hope it helps somebody someday....
Good factual work. I like it when you use the statistics to back up the percentage of the time of a particular threat. Keep the q & a. We all learn from each other.
Great content! (Oh, how I wished that I lived in a country that did not treat pepper spray the same way as guns in a self defense situation, though, but that's not your fault.)
If you can't carry pepper spray get yourself a can of wasp/ hornet spray works better for blinding an attacker than pepper spray and sprays out further
this is the best pf your vids ever❗💯 no compromise, opinion, or attitude. Just real, life changing, awareness with great advice. .Mike. you nailed this. Thx 💯❗💯
Hey Mike, Great video (as always). Greetings from Perth, Australia. Long time subscriber to the channel and really appreciate your content and the way in which you deliver it. I can attest to crackhead strength. We have a really bad Meth problem here in Perth and I was out with friends in our main entertainment precinct about 5 years ago when I got jumped. I'm glad I can hold my own but lost three teeth during this incident and nearly got stabbed. Anyways keep up the awesome work man. Hope to make it stateside and do some training with you. Stay safe
This is so honest! You are very reasonable when it comes to self protection. I unfortunately know from experience about what you say about the scumbag family member you let continue to be in your life. Number one skill in self protection, well one of the most important skills… the ability to assert your boundaries. Loved this and many of your videos.
THANK YOU! I'm so sick and tired of the whole idea of "you have to be prepared for a superhumanly strong predator leaping out of the bushes while on superextramegadrugs(c) and wants to cook your heart in a stew and use your ripped off arm to stir the pot" type of argumentation on why you need to learn how to protect yourself, while completely shooting down the idea of domestic violence being the most common situation of violence, and there being no need for learning how to defend against that. I've spent years, both as a student and an instructor of Krav Maga, and the fact that there is ZERO in either the IKMF or KMG curriculums for defending against an abusive spouse, while there are detailed procedures for how to take down a person armed with an assault rifle in an airplane hijacking situation is more than enough to explain why I got fed up and quit...
@@michaelpardo8403 Because after Imi Lichtenfelt retired from the army he set out to adapt his system for civilian use, and that is the branch of KM that is most commonly taught to civilians today. If you think about it, a military aircraft wouldn't be subjected to a hijacking, so for a single person to disarm a hijacker is more an action hero move, rather than a military one.
Yeah all those people who say anything less than a .45 caliber bullet is weak are annoying. The .45 was adopted in WW2 because Japanese troops would tie bamboo around their torso, arms and legs really tight so they wouldn't feel pain. When they charged at troops they needed a .45 to get them down fast. Not every self defense encounter is going to require a .45 caliber bullet.
@@rwdchannel2901 You seem to have mistaken the Japanese with the Moro Muslims of the Philippine Islands. The Moros were Islamic jihadi zealots whom attacked American troops in the Philippine islands. American troops carried 38 caliber pistols and 30 cal rifles at the time. The Filipino Moro Jihadi would tourniquet their limbs before charging with swords and bolos. A common method used in blade cultures before battle to slow blood loss and stem blood pressure drop should a limb be severed in battle, allowing the swordsman more time to wound or kill more OpFor before going down. In thick, dense, jungle it was easy for Moro swordsman to ambush American troops at close quarter. The American 38 caliber round proved less effective at 'stopping' a charging, adrenalized, Moro Jihadi before he could cut down Americans before succumbing to his wounds. So the 45 caliber pistol round was created and troops were armed with the new round. It packed enough wallop to 'stop' a sword charging Moro Jihadi geeked up on adrenalin with his limbs tourniqueted. The 45 then saw service in European theatre against Nazi before it saw service in pacific theatre against Imperial Niponese/Japanese. Later the 38special was created and it was adopted by police because it was more powerful than the old 38 cal. Today with modern gun powder and better ammo we have smaller rounds producing bigger wound shock channels than the slower moving, venerated, 45cal. pistol round. The 45 acp however was an upgrade from the original 45 cal pistol round. But yea, you meant Filipino Moros.
From my experiences taking stims for ADHD, I perceive something different regarding pain in small details. For example, usually I can't take my gf bursting my pimples for long without complaining of the annoyance, but if I'm on a stim, I hardly feel it. Never fought anyone while on it, but it helps strengthening your grip on things and be up and ready for anything easier. So it probably doesn't make you stronger than your natural, but it possibly makes you access all your natural strength. I know it has something to do noradrenergic effects of those stims
After a few decades in and out of martial arts training I agree with you and for the woman who is wanting advice on what weapon, any weapon is just an extension of your hands it's the repeated movement that will develop good speed, power and muscle memory. Great video 👍👊!
Haha this guy's right, most of the fights I got into with people I knew that's for sure. And when I reflect they could have been avoided. That's why now I choose to spend most of my time alone 😅
when I was literally 4...I walked across broken glass and had to be rushed to the hospital. I was freaking out to much that it took my mom, dad, 3 nurses and the doctor to hold me down in the room. Never underestimate the strength of someone. You have to meet aggression with more aggression immediately...or make sure you knock them out with a metal something lololol
@@Drikkerbadevand Yeah its often in these situations like that. When someone is absolutely freaking out, but the people trying to hold are also trying their hardest not to hurt the person. Its not the strenght of 4 yo why there needs to be multiple people. Even in this videos story how much the difficulty was controlling the guy that the officers didnt want to hurt him? He even said before that "try not to hurt him" or something to the other guys
I work armed security in Portland, and I can attest that the meth head strength/ability to not feel pain is extremely real. They also unfortunately are well aware that the cops won’t show up, and if they do they won’t be prosecuted by the DA and any action against them will be viewed as egregious. This contributes to their inability to be dealt with because they know they have little to fear on the accountability side.
Were you one of the guys who wrestled the one meth head who was jerking off in a restaurant? I remember a story were some dude high on meth was in a restaurant and started beating it, and it took 15 or so cops to wrestle him to the ground. I have to HAND it to him. I mean, it is impressive what drugs can do. He was one determined motherfucker.
Meth heads operate off creating fear in their intended victims. Loud, grandiose behavior. The thing to remember is their teeth snap right off at the gum line. Bones are also easy to break (orbitals, mandibles esp.)
Very true, most ppl seem to be more concerned with the remote possibility that they face the 'invincible drugged up bad guy.' Moreover they usually ask questions like this where their real question is 'What can I use that requires the least involvement of myself, no training but is 100% effective when I do need it?' Number one, if you commonly find yourself around crack and meth fiends as well as the PCP addicts then maybe you should find a different place to hang out. Second, virtually nothing nor any techniques will be effective if you aren't willing to train to prepare yourself to use it and third, nothing is 100%. And it not necessarily the drugs themselves that create 150 lbs incredible hulks... If a person is experiencing a fight or flight response from a drug induced delusion or they just have mental dysfunctions that involve delusions OR they are just freaked out and scared for their life, they are going to be just as difficult to deal with because it's the adrenaline, which we all have, that gives the energy and strength boost. Finally, the big reason a bad guy doesn't feel pain or seems not to is that we as defenders who refuse to do any training, refuse to learn how to transfer energy and use our bodies to hit a target with sufficient force just can't reliably summon the energy and technique in an emergency if we've never done it before. So this middle-aged lady who asked you this question is kind of stuck in her hypothetical predicament.
I fought someone on coke years ago and he got me in a headlock. I ended up smacking him in the bollocks with a flat hand HARD then grabbing them and twisting. He let go but a couldn't believe he didn't drop. The fight ended only when other people got involved and it sort of fizzled out
We once fought a sociopathic person who was drunk(And probably on drugs) and you can hit him bunch of times to the head and he barely reacts to it, but a good hammerfist with a few palm strikes to the back of the head along with vertical elbow strikes to the spine(using your full weight) did their job so we could sit on him and call the police for him for the second time that day.
In a life/deather those are good options, but if you get some pos public prosecutor, based on where you've struck & potential positional asphyxiation after the fact, if that guy carks it you could've been prosecuted for manslaughter. Glad you got out unscathed, but the biggest thing I fear from a self-defence situation is a scummy legal system that'll happily prosecute me for making it out alive.
@@merkins87 He was rough even after being arrested, in the police station. Officer said that he would beat him up for such inadequate behavior but was afraid of being judged.

Great videos, always look forward to your material. Here in south africa, the majority of criminals are as high as a kite before they attack you. It is MORE likely that such a person will attack you than a friend or relative. Some people live in very poor areas, and there are lots of druggies. So, it is all relative to the area.
Yeah stuff i have heard from there seems like its quite different. Typical ghetto in other country isnt like south african one. Also the sexual violence, and all that seem to be out of control. I think theres even south african products that basicly attempts block r*pe because its apparently such common threat. Idk if the messed up believe that banging virgin will cure aids is also in that country, but it kinda sounds could be if that is even real believe some have. If i have understood correctly doing the deed even in gangs is almost like "cultural" thing for some groups over there even though its very little talked about in western media.
I myself have always been one that, once I'm angry I don't feel pain, however I was always a small build, skinny, and for that was always underestimated, being far stronger than I look, I was also a natural even before I went to MMA in terms of fighting, very fast and hard to hit, but also knew how to use momentum to make up for lack of raw strength, making for much harder and solid connecting hits than people would anticipate from someone my size, I also learned to channel adrenaline and focus myself, I loved to fight competitively, but hated fighting for real, but you got me angry enough to actually fight as rare as that was, I no longer felt pain, 9 people tried and failed to hold me down, so my larger point here is how would I recommend taking someone like me down (your cracked out person isn't likely going to be as focused but will have even a higher tolerance of pain than me), and all I can recommend is to stay out of my range altogether if you're not confident with your hands (or a weapon though a weapon is going to make me angrier and want to finish the fight quicker), but the other way is to immobilize me, now the problem with that method being, 9 people most of which were larger than me couldn't hold me back/down when I was that determined, so if you're not someone who can Mike Tyson 1 hit KO me, you're likely not someone who can hold me down either, maybe you're someone who can't run away as well, you're not limber, in shape, whatever, what do you do? I honestly would recommend something like pepper ball to keep on you, one of those heavy duty flashlight/tazer combos, something that can help you control the direction of that confrontation, because odds are they aren't just immune to something like that, we've seen those juiced up addicts than can take a tazer unphased but you're likely not stopping that guy with anything less than lethal force, and that might take a minute if he's that determined, but your undrugged nimble attacker with an abnormal pain threshold? Odds are those stun tactics will give you the edge to at least get away, get help, something that will boost your chances, I might not be able to feel you hitting, cutting or stabbing me, but if I can't see I can't see
Sir, been watching you for a while; this is one of your best. Q&A format definitely has some value. Thanks and God bless you, Sir. May the peace of G-d stay always in your heart. Love from west virginia
back in the mid 80s a friend asked me to give her friend a ride home.there were two of them so i took one of my friends. they sat in the back of the car and half way to there one of them starts kicking the back of the driver seat almost causing a crash. immediately we pull over on the side of the freeway and do what we can to extract them from the car. i had seen something with a cop talking about pain compliance and it had mentioned taking fingers and bending them backwards till they break. i broke every finger and both thumbs on this dude and he still wasnt giving up. so we started on their feet and grabbed a foot and began turning them as we were pulling them out of the car. it took us 5 minutes of fighting to get these two tweakers out of the car. they were left on the side of the freeway with no functioning fingers and atleast one of them had a massively dislocated knee. even with all these injuries they still kept coming for us like zombies. our friend amazingly never heard from them again for all i know they wandered out into traffic. today i probably would have shot them and dropped them into the rift in southern Az.
I got OCed sprayed in the military, and then had to complete a baton fighting course while under the effects. I think OC spray either works REALLY well, or not at all. I've witnessed some people (most of them were Fillipino, not sure if certain races just have resistance or something) have near-immunity. Some people can just power through it. Other people, its like somebody hit them in the head with a brick. Because of all this, I think where OC spray really excels over other options is when you are dealing with multiple people, but against a single attacker, I don't like the idea of a weapon that just straight up won't work against some people no matter what.
a long time ago... a friend of a friend of a friend, allegedly robbed convenience stores for a living. he would pepperspray himself every day to "build up an immunity". would laugh when security peper sprayed him as he ran off.
During my unfortunate lockup, I ate so much pepper spray and pepper balls that now it hardly phases me, it just makes me stronger and angrier. Close to 100 direct sprays and tens of thousands of pepper balls(very violent place many riots, not sshhittiing you, I was literally sweating out red OC during workouts). It will make your eyes water and limit vision if enough gets in your eyes directly.... but, if someone is used to OC and they are intent on hurting you it's probably not going to do much to stop them.
A mini deodorant spray works well too if illegal in your state all. Learned that from ninjitsu. Opponent cant see. He cant fight properly if at all. I know some folks.who always walk with something to throw in an attackers eyes, mace, salt, deodoranf spray. . Good things to have in a top pocket
I would like to see you do a video on indicators that somebody you know is getting close to trying to hurt you, if you haven’t already. I do like the Q&A format.
Run away? From the bigger, stronger, more aggressive criminal? Yeah... Maybe. What about the victim's children? This is borderline useless advice, friend.
Wrestling and jiu-jitsu have both proven to be pretty ineffective against knives, so I would recommend having two knives (one as backup). If someone grabs your knife hand, you can simply turn the knife in the direction of their hand, wrist or arm. Pain compliance has nothing to do with it; once a tendon/ligament is cut, that limb is pretty much useless. Flashlights are great too; no quantity of drugs can help you not be blinded by 1,000+ lumens.
I think you may someone who's never had a fight with someone high as a kite, speeding and super strong to boot! Nothing - but nothing worked on him. Animal. Pure animal.
@@NokturnalMonstrum 1. There is no martial art that is effective against a knife. If you watch any of those '(martial art) vs. the knife' type of videos that have actual live sparring against resisting opponents, they all fail, including wrestling. 2. From personal experience, that is incorrect. Knives (or any sharp instrument) are highly effective if you know what you're doing. If you're concerned that it could be used against you, always have a backup. Please note that I'm only talking about self-defense from a survival point of view and not from a legal point of view. Going bare-handed would be better from a legal perspective, but it's worse for your survival, and the opposite is true if you were armed, but that's the tradeoff.
I’m a combat veteran who loves his guns and carries 2 of them at all times and the shout-out to us who would rather be judged by 12 but it’s unneeded. All of of the advice given is extremely good advice. A gun or any weapons whatsoever deadly or no is a liability and another element you just added to the confrontation and mad it more dang our and harmful for yourself and you have to feel confident to use it and using a gun can be extremely hard to do when faced with actual killing someone.
I have put an obscene amount of time into training with handguns...... and it has taught me that if you aren't extremely well versed in using a handgun, you should look into alternative methods of self defense. Protecting yourself at the expense of an innocent bystander is irresponsible. I personally carry mace everywhere.
The more stories i here about mikes cop days the more i realize how good of a cop he was he littlerally got lunged at by a crackhead but understood he wasn't trying to hurt him so he directed his team not to injure him
So, I gotta say, living in Portland myself: this is not a myth. I myself have been in close contact with multiple dangerous situations especially downtown where we have a lot of homeless people, and on the train. In fact i had two people get into a fight, rolling on the floor, right in front of me on a train. And then another time I was riding a train and some crazy homeless guy was definitely whacked out on something and about to get into a fight with two other guys on the train, yelling at them, and cussing them out and such. Another time my roomate and I were getting off work downtown late at night and walking to the train stop, and we got confronted by a homeless guy and he was pretty aggressive. In cities with a big homeless problem the stranger attack has definitely become more than a myth these days.
@@hard2hurt Well what I was trying to say is that in Portland, and other cities with big homeless problems, a "whacked out methhead who you don't know", actually is a more likely scenario here. Also some people who are LGBT (such as trans women, etc.), are automatically a target for others who don't like their very existence, and then when you add crazy and intoxicated to that mix, it can be a dangerous mix. We had some white supremacist guy attack a muslim woman on a train a couple years back and IIRC the two guys who came to her aid and defended her got stabbed to death. Last winter downtown there was some guy who just got out of jail and walked into some juice bar or something and stole a sandwich and just randomly punched the female shop owner. There was another time when I personally was riding the bus to work and some crazy guy was staring at me the entire ride and talking loudly at me. I didn't respond but it was super creepy and then he followed me off the bus at the transit center and continued to stare and glare at me. I got so creeped out I went to find a female bus driver and had her call security who delt with the guy, but I have to say, especially if you take transit or live or work in a city with a big homeless problem like a lot of the West Coast, these kinds of crimes have become a bigger issue. We also have the Proud Boys across the river in Vancouver, and part of their initiation rites is they come into Portland and beat up strangers. They consider it a badge of honor. It's definitely still low, like in a city of millions the chances of something happening are pretty small. But I've had enough incidents, or been around enough incidents on public transit and in the downtown area that I definitely would not travel alone on transit unarmed. And these were all incidents where I wasn't seeking out trouble or ignoring my gut, it was like I just happened to be on the same train or bus as a crazy person and something went down. I definitely understand this women's concern who's from Portland who sent you that question.
It is not more likely than being attacked by someone you know in Portland or in any other city. It is more likely in some areas than others... but we're talking about fractions of percent chances to begin with.
@Nicholas Time That's rather rude and patronizing. I've had multiple violent or very sketchy encounters happen on public transit or while commuting, or in the downtown area of my city. Any one of those could have gone worse. Violent crime rates are actually spiking in Portland. I don't live in fear of that, I take precautions and use common sense. I carry pepper spray and a flashlight. I love my city. I wouldn't live anywhere else. It's a beautiful place to live. But we do have a well-documented increasing crime problem. (Including violent crime, homicides have gone wayyy up the last few years.) Please don't act like national averaged out statistics negates localized hotspots where crime is actually on the rise. It's bad math, and it's just not true. Just this morning there was a woman found severely assaulted and left for dead in the parking lot of a car wash a few blocks from my home. Again, please don't act like national averages negate local hotspots, and that residents in those areas shouldn't take those risks seriously and take precautions. It's not about living in fear, it's about risk management, and taking reasonable precautions.
"Calm down I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6" *Caveats of Training required Shame that half the people into gun culture don't do any of those things either.
always appreciate ur no bs takes mike my mom wanted to get a gun one time (some people were casing the house) and i had to convince her that she would be less safe with a gun ... same things u said... it takes a lot of training and continuing practice for a gun to be worth the liability
It does not take continuous training for a gun to be “worth the liability”. Keep it loaded. Keep it locked and hidden but still easily accessible when needed. You should know how to operate it, know how to clear jams, and be familiar with how it feels to fire it. A home defense firearm is not a liability unless the homes residents are mentally unstable, drug addicts, domestic abusers, or all of the above. Get a gun and keep your home and family safe.
hi there! 1st time commenter and, speaking as a reformed "meth-head" (7 years sober) When it comes to confronting a hostile person who is "out of the mind" on meth, you gotta find a way to gain control of their hands from behind and, further, put them face down on the ground as best you can. There's something that happens to a person when they've had too much meth and are in the act of overdosing, it's an animalistic side that has zero chance of being reasoned with. Pain compliance isn't an issue because they can break an arm, foot, rib (puncture a lung), and just keep going. A person OD'n on meth is not something to right off as "The Boogie Man". That's my 2 cents.
Holy shit, Mike. I was literally gonna say this exact shit before I even started the video. My jiu jitsu coach worked private security and was the head of security of all of the local strip clubs. He says it so frequently that it's nearly his catchphrase: pain is a terrible way of forcing compliance. I have seen meth heads come at other bouncers with broken ankles. I have never seen someone fight through a strangle once it was sunk in.
I have been in Portland via Seattle since 1979. I been involved with martial arts for 58yr. Knowing how to size up the person with plan A, B, or C is helpful. Knowing surroundings is helpful and blend in. As stated most likely you will know the person from past contacts. If not, be open for sudden changes.
I wish to add that mental illness can also give someone exceptional strength. South Korea 1996 I was suffering from PTSD in TDC 2nd Infantry Division and lashed out in my communication room. Took down three MPs before a fourth one finally got me cuffed and to the medics and hospital. Diagnosed with severe PTSD from Invasion of Panama in 1989 and Gulf War. It was fortunate that I wasn’t court martialed since the army considered it a medical emergency issue and not deliberate belligerent behavior. I received treatment and was medically retired at 19 years service. I too am 5 ft 5 inches and small yet I was able to do that much damaged to very large military police. Something to keep in mind when dealing with some aggressive individuals. Excellent video! 👍🇺🇸

Well said!!!
@@TreyYork1 I would like to say, what you've said is 100% correct..👍
Only thing I would like to add to this is that:
This is one reason why everyone should do cardio training weekly..
Meth head attacks in Portland might be more likely than other places.
Aikido entered the chat
I love how you pre-address the internet ninjas, and maintain a little comedy to it. very well done
Same defense applies, right? Knowing how to deter takedowns and getting up if taken down is a good start.
Mine was relative

You made it out unscathed, that's a credit/distinction in my books- well done.
Talking him down and de-escalating the situation is a win for you my friend, well done.
Crazy
Bingo, bath salt Florida zombies are unreal, now things are even worse. Mace is my favorite

100% agree with the fear of crime vs actual crime
Just want to conceptualize "crackhead strength" for y'all. Stimulants seem like they increase the strength of the electric signal that goes to your muscles. My ability to compress and squeeze things on high doses of addy is increased by a substantial degree and I don't really know why. It doesn't translate to everything, mostly just squeezing and creating crazy amounts of tension. This is someone who works out regularly and doses recreationally once a month though, probably would be different for a guy who's been up for 9 days with just cough drops to eat.
Maybe it's the natural blocks in your brain that stop you doing stuff like clenching you jaw so hard you destroy your teeth are bypassed in some way..
That jives with my experiences.
Explains why stimulants aren’t allowed in combat sports, even for medical reasons. Good to know.
I saw an episode of Cops in Vegas where the cop was talking about foot chases with meth heads. He said they're fast out of the hole, but their cardio is no bueno. If track had a 20 yd dash, they might medal, but that's it.

I was assaulted once in my life, and this was by a drugged up person. I was just standing around in the middle of the day when all of a sudden someone punched me in my head from behind. Lucky for me he just went away after that attack. It took me a while to process what just happened. To that day i have no idea what was his motivation.

I worked in a prison for 28 years, we didnt get gas or tasers until my last couple of years. It was interesting in the older days.

I have seen a few instances where use of pain compliance causes individuals who are in crisis / under the influence to fight / resist even harder.
that happens to me the more worked up I get the less pain I feel
You get super human strength
Yeah, I agree!
I used to train a lot of pain compliance techniques. Some where very cool! My folks whipped us with fly swats and belts and it turns out belts and hard whips like fly-swats and better yet car antennas do a great job on some folks. It feels great until it doesn't work and then it's a rough adrenaline dump and rougher time controlling the situation(sometimes just attempting to control it)
I martial arts in some styles of Kung-Fu. It might be worthwhile to understand those profiles and teach it
I can confirm that.

Thanks for the positive mention, brotha!
@@bigguy7353 ever fought a boxer?
Awesome to hear "war stories" it gives real perspective to what you are telling people about. When you can give them the real breakdown of why you know what you know, it gives you more credibility and it strengthens the bond between viewer and poster. :)
Love the q+a's, I live in Belfast Ireland, recently people smoking crack has become a big thing!
We are allowed zero weapons, not even pepper spray, I have decent boxing but am definately gonna look in to learning some sort of grappling........ thanks for the advice Mike, love the channel.
Carry a walking stick.
jujutsu is good pretty simple.
This was a fantastic and genuinely useful video in not just the practical advice but the psychological impact. Thanks.
Liked the Q&A format. Any information we can get from someone like you who has faced that situation is valuable. Keep it comin'!
All that said, people need to FEEL safe and this video helps people find that.
great advice, really useful info. worth mentioning pepper spray is illegal in a few countries tho
There's nothing to say you can't spray them in the face with underarm deodorant though
Fresh new additional material and even better than prev. I think. War story good.
If someone is whacked out on fentanyl, they are not attacking you. They're asleep. Or dead.
Hope it helps somebody someday....
all the likes and algorithmic magic to this video! thank you for making very clear who is most likely to be a threat.
Good factual work. I like it when you use the statistics to back up the percentage of the time of a particular threat. Keep the q & a. We all learn from each other.
Great content!
(Oh, how I wished that I lived in a country that did not treat pepper spray the same way as guns in a self defense situation, though, but that's not your fault.)
here it's forbidden to even carry pepper spray

You make good content. You are likable and relatable. A LOT of content creators try too hard and don’t come across as genuine
I really liked this Q&A format, keep it up!
That happened to me twice while delivering pizza in San Bernardino at night. My olight warrior mini was extremely effective
@@rwdchannel2901 bamboo armor? Hmmmm…
@@Stryfe52 I guess it was cheap since it was all over some island in the Pacific ocean.
Great video 👍👊!

when I was literally 4...I walked across broken glass and had to be rushed to the hospital. I was freaking out to much that it took my mom, dad, 3 nurses and the doctor to hold me down in the room. Never underestimate the strength of someone. You have to meet aggression with more aggression immediately...or make sure you knock them out with a metal something lololol
Lmao.. I'm sure it was to try and keep YOU safe.. I could literally squish a 4 yo to death 'holding' them down by myself
@@Drikkerbadevand you missed the point
@@Drikkerbadevand Yeah its often in these situations like that. When someone is absolutely freaking out, but the people trying to hold are also trying their hardest not to hurt the person. Its not the strenght of 4 yo why there needs to be multiple people. Even in this videos story how much the difficulty was controlling the guy that the officers didnt want to hurt him? He even said before that "try not to hurt him" or something to the other guys
Great video and explaining the best outcome when you are in court and defending your Right to protect yourself and possibly loved ones.
If cops won’t come maybe meth heads should just be shot on sight with the person protecting themselves not getting in trouble. 🤷🏻♂️
"they won't be prosecuted by the D.A." Especially in Portland, LA, Seattle and any other cities run by democrats.
Yep, the legal system is corrupt from top to bottom.

Great videos, always look forward to your material.
Here in south africa, the majority of criminals are as high as a kite before they attack you. It is MORE likely that such a person will attack you than a friend or relative.
Some people live in very poor areas, and there are lots of druggies.
So, it is all relative to the area.
You folks in s.a. created that situation
Thank you for creating this video and sharing your knowledge with us.
I believe a higher body fat percentage will also give you a resistance to pepper spray.
Just like every other pawn.

An untrained individual's best bet in that situation is to try to run away before they hurt you bad
Run away? From the bigger, stronger, more aggressive criminal? Yeah... Maybe. What about the victim's children? This is borderline useless advice, friend.
Unless you are a trained runner, Running away just leaves you too tired to fight when/if they catch you
Fear is worse than the reality,...usually!😊
1. Of all the martial arts out there, wrestling seems to be actually the most effective one against knives.
2. Knives are terrible self defense tools
Wow.. an underrated comment if there ever was one
The more stories i here about mikes cop days the more i realize how good of a cop he was he littlerally got lunged at by a crackhead but understood he wasn't trying to hurt him so he directed his team not to injure him
The best self defense tool in portland is a moving truck.
T-Zone practice on a target, works well on a tweeker.
It was never a myth.
Well, I mean, its Portland. What do you expect?
"If they're not getting blood to their brain - they're not hurting you." Well said, Sir.

Shame that half the people into gun culture don't do any of those things either.

Oh and get out of Portland.
always appreciate ur no bs takes mike
my mom wanted to get a gun one time (some people were casing the house) and i had to convince her that she would be less safe with a gun
... same things u said... it takes a lot of training and continuing practice for a gun to be worth the liability
This was a nice addition. War stories are nice to listen to, just do make that the main type of content you put out
Holy shit, Mike.
You spit out a lot of good content. I certainly like hearing your perspective on things.
It's too easy. Aim for the eyes. I can't believe I even have to say that.
