  • Welcome to my first-time watching as we react to War for the Planet of the Apes (2017). This is the climatic conclusion to the Planet of the Apes trilogy! I was not ready for what this film had in store for us. The deep layered themes, the emotional beats and an incredible narrative.
The monumental conflict in this film had me at the edge of my seat! Directed by Matt Reeves, "War for the Planet of the Apes" follows Caesar and his fellow apes as they face off against a ruthless human army led by the Colonel. This film truly takes a deep dive into the themes that were also explored in the first two films. We got to explore loyalty, vengeance, and redemption.
Andy Serkis as Caesar is killing it once again with his tremendous performance breathing life into this character with every gesture and every piece of dialogue he's given.
Michael Giacchino gives us yet another homerun with this soundtrack. Our favorite out of all three films.

I was an animator on the first two films at Weta. I’m really happy you’re enjoying these films. Just so you’re aware, animators, modelers, character riggers and the facial team add A LOT to these characters, performance wise. I had shots that the Mocap was completely broken and had to be animated from scratch. We’re always enhancing the performances regardless of functioning Mocap. It’s not just a plug and play situation.

The entire trilogy is great. I would probably rate it:
      1. WAR
      2. DAWN
      3. RISE
As an aside, noticed you haven't reacted to Edge of Tomorrow yet with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. Maybe throw it on a Patreon poll. Great movie.

God, Blue Eyes just getting murdered in the first act was the single most upsetting moment of the whole franchise. All the buildup he had in Dawn. All his character development, realization of Koba's actions, his moral dilemma and maturity into a worthy successor to his father...
And it's all unexpectedly taken away in an instant. Though, given Blue Eyes represented the future of the younger generation, I suppose it works for the film's favor too: highlighting how the horrors of war robs great potential from a future.
At least Maurice and Rocket made it 🥺

The body language, the subtleties, even the mannerisms, and the eyes - my god, the eyes! His eyes tell sooo much about the character like, you can even see what he’s thinking.
That scene in the first movie when he’s sitting perched in the cage watching the others wake up after giving them the alz serum, so stoic but his eyes tell you exactly what he’s thinking and feeling. That image is so iconic! 🐵

If you guys are curious to know what happened to Malcom in the last movie, apparently he died offscreen like Will. But instead of dying to the virus, Malcom was trying to convince the colonel that the apes are good and he didn’t have to kill them. So the colonel killed him for siding with the apes.

      @nicname3147 2 месяца назад +30

Yep. Theres a deleted scene where Colonel McCullough actually explains this to Caesar. Despite the lack of vfx, it sucked seeing Caesar so heartbroken over his friend's death

  • @devilkyn1
    @devilkyn1 2 месяца назад +98

The Colonel's major flaw is that he equates losing the ability to speak with "reverting" to a primitive state. However we are given two prime examples of how this isn't true. First, as you guys noted, Caesar is speaking almost constantly and in full sentences in this film. Despite this he is allowing his base emotions to override his tactical mind and fuel his need for vengence, like Koba did. Meanwhile we have Nova who has lost her ability to speak yet maintains her personality and compassion. She even begins to sign showing that she is still intelligent. I think this shows that the Colonel was short-sighted in his analysis of the disease's mutation.
Furthermore, when Caesar finds the Colonel in his quarters after he contracts the disease, we see he has been drowning his sorrows. I think this shows that the Colonel realizes that even though he can't speak any longer, he still possesses his faculties. This in turn means that he full on murdered his own son, who wasn't a primitive animal. He now knows his son was still fully himself, but just not able to expess it. If he had given his son some time to recover, he would have been just like Nova. I think that is why the Colonel wants Caesar to put him out of his misery.
Great react videos though. I love this trilogy and was so happy to see them covered on the channel!

@@StayFractalesque There are some times where one movie receives an award that I would've preferred another movie had won, but I can at least see why the former had won that award.
For example, when _The Jungle Book_ (2016) won Best VFX over _Rogue One: A Star Wars Story_ and _Doctor Strange._
But I can admit _The Jungle Book's_ VFX were the most consistently good, with _Rogue One_ being held back with the uncanny CG recreation of Tarkin and _Doctor Strange_ being held back with how cartoony Dormammu looked at the end.
But there are also awards where I cannot see how this one film won an award that should've gone to another.
For example, I was so pissed off when I heard _How To Train Your Dragon_ was only nominated for Best Original Score, but lost to _The Social Network._
I'm pissed because it's like, did _Social Network_ even HAVE a musical score?!?! Whereas the score to _HTTYD_ has been regarded as a masterpiece due to how melodically simple yet orchestrally complex it was and how it literally told a story.

also there are other aspects which would take me 20 pages to explain 😂

The evolution of the Apes and the de-evolution of the Human Race comes in perfect alignment to the story that leads to the original movie.
I just wish all writers of “prequels” would follow this path and not stray off to create their own interpretations. That is how you kill a franchise.

The great Terry Notary is the true secret weapon of these movies, so wonderful throughout the entire trilogy as Caesar's loyal lieutenant and best friend Rocket. It's somewhat similar to the relationship that Andy Serkis had with Notary in real life, since Notary worked as the movement coach for all of the "non-human" races in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings/Hobbit trilogies, and also helped Serkis to develop the physicality of Golem, and as a result they formed a very close bond. So when they made these movies Notary and Serkis worked together to mentor the other actors and really bring the apes to life, and the fruits of their labours together really paid off spectacularly here.

His exposure to ALZ-113 when he released it in the ape sanctuary may have accelerated his development, but he has a good 8 years of development prior to this. He essentially has had more time to evolve.

I love the Colonel so much as a villain. I am personally drawn to him because I imagine if I was a human in that situation. I would totally understand the Colonel's desire to save the human race through questionable acts. But also at the same time, nature has its course.

  • @bryce253

I absolutely agree with the decision Caesar made in not killing the Colonel. For one, it would be like giving into his hate which would be basically the worst of humanistic flaws. But secondly, it would be giving the Colonel what he wanted and proving him right in his world view about humans and apes in comparison. The Colonel was already infected and was sinking into a state of animalistic basics. It is poetic justice. It would have ruined the moment for Caesar to have just killed him. Karma was going to work. Let it.
Kind of a left field comparison but it reminds me of the Ali fight with George Foreman where the mighty George Foreman started to tumble from the effects of the rope a dope strategy and Ali's knockout flurry. There was a moment where Ali was cocked back for a final blow but held back because it was so monumental to allow the beauty of Foreman tumbling to
the canvass to fully play out with Ali just standing over him after everyone saying Ali had no shot of beating him. Ali was a 6-1 underdog in that fight. Hitting Foreman on the way down would've ruined the beauty of that fall and Ali instantly understood that. Now we have all those iconic shots of that moment forever for history. Caesar shooting the Colonel would've ruined the moment. It now forever stands as poetic justice.

Also remember, Ceasar is the only ape that had BOTH of the ALZ formulas in him. All the others only have the 113 while he has the 112 AND 113. That's another reason why he speaks better than the rest.

For the ones that don't know, Planet Of The Apes is based on a French book from 1963. The movie that closes resembles the book (with some deviations) is Tim Burton's 2001 version, including the end when human survivor flies back to Earth just to find the world doesn't have humans, only apes, and the world resembles out own. Curious thing, the books starts with two astronauts that discover a message that tells the story of what happens, in the end it shown that the two astronauts are chimpanzees.

One of the few trilogies where each installment is better than the last.. I do like Dawn slightly more too, there's just slightly more depth in Dawn because there's more grey morality on both sides.. where-as in War, there's no good humans at all, and even the traitor apes are being forced against their will, unlike the truly traitorous Koba, what with his political maneuvering and diabolical false flag assassination attempt.. Dawn makes one think about intelligence in general, and how convergent evolution probably always leads to the same outcomes once sentient..

But he's a very scary villain because he believes so whole heartedly and he does not waver from his belief. Im glad Maurice and Rocket survived. I've yet to see Dune 2 but that and the fourth planet of the apes are the 2 movies I'm most excited to see in the upcoming future. But mostly the 4th apes movie

My husband and I saw Rise in theaters. We liked it but it didn't click with us where we had to watch the rest. We finally watched the last 2 on streaming then we watched them all with you guys. I think Rise is my least favorite even though I do love the scene where Cesar speaks for the first time. It's a toss up bestwen the last 2. Dawn is very well done and shows how 1 bad person or ape, can cause so much hurt and destruction. War just killed me to watch. Cesar loosing his wife and a child is haunting. That stayed with me for a while. And Woody Harrelson plays such a good bad guy. That monologue about his son sickening as it is, to me portrays that he broke. He was already messed up but that just finished his journey to crazy.
Thank you for this journey. Watching them back to back has given me a whole new perspective on these.

Yeah, if you watch the entire franchise it becomes very apparent how biblical / mythological it is. The scene in the beginning when he walks through after the battle and they all bow to him like he’s a prophet.
Caesar’s story mirrors that of Moses - starts out rescued as a baby, raised with a privileged upbringing, is exiled (ie sent to the ape prison), becomes leader of his own people, frees them from bondage, establishes a new colony, overcomes internal strife and rebellion, brings them to the promised land but because he broke one of the commandments (by killing Winter) he is only allowed to bring them to promised land but not actually join them.
Caesar’s story parallels Moses. Caesar could very easily be seen as an ape variation of Moses or at heavily inspired by him.

Anyone else felt that Caesar in Dawn was more compelling when he was speaking in brief, forced-sounding phrases? Somehow that made more of an impact personally. Now he's speaking perfectly like a human he just feels like a hairier human. Dawn really had the apes speaking feel very forced, almost unnatural, like their vocal chords weren't built for such speech but still managing to convey so much meaning and feeling in the short, simple phrases they make.

    • @AnthonyIon

I agree, but this is a 5 year time skip after dawn, which shows how the virus has rapidly mutated and how that mutation has affected both the apes and the humans. The apes vocal cords have changed to allow them to speak clearer and the humans vocal cords have deteriorated which prevents them from speaking.

The plot isn't black and white like so much of the trite, shallow crap that is churned out by Hollywood lately. There are so many shades of grey and so many layers.

Another great reaction! One of the things I love most about this " Planet of the Apes" series are the shout-outs to the original movies: Caesar, Bright Eyes, "Damn dirty ape," the virus, Maurice the orangutan (named after the late Maurice Evans, who played Dr. Zaius the orangutan in the original), Cornelius and Nova. At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if the human in "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" is named "Taylor."
Re your "Cloverfield" reaction, my suggestions to future reactions are "10 Cloverfield Lane" and "Overlord" and given the nods to 70s disaster movies, "Airport," "Earthquake," "The Poseidon Adventure" and "The Towering Inferno."
