I used to "caffeine cycle" for cutting where I start with 30mg caffeine and gradually build it up to 300mg then cold-turkey stop. I experienced the same symptoms that you mentioned every time I finished the cycle, but my recovery was 3 days of symptoms only and by day 4 I felt fine, so I'd start the cycle again at day 5.
I did caffeine cycling because I didn't want to go over 300mg (not "panic attacks" but heart races like crazy), and because 30mg when your receptors are fresh give the same results as 300mg when receptors are resistant.
By "results" I mean "hunger suppressing", which is the parameter that I used when I experimented on myself with different doses at different times. My goal was to use caffeine to suppress hunger throughout the day in my one-meal-a-day IF diet (my diet off-days were the same days as my caffeine recovery days). Beginning of cycle, 30mg would be enough to suppress hunger. By end of cycle, 300mg would barely get me through the day.
While this worked for cutting and I got to the lowest BF% for me which was 8% (I'm the kind of guy who's between 16-20% BF normally), I've never felt worse in my life.
My caffeine withdrawal symptoms kept getting worse and worse after every cycle. I'm glad that my sister is a medical student because she's helped me survive the recovery days when my headaches would be so severe I'd start crying from pain, and my chest would feel so tight that I feel suffocating and can't breath.
I eventually quit caffeine and now if I ever consume it, English breakfast tea is the only thing I can handle cuz man am I really sensitive to caffeine now! I'll experience the withdrawal symptoms the next day which makes me wonder if it's all in my head at this point.
But because of this I very rarely consume caffeine and tbh, I've never been more mentally focused in my life ever. I can go hours studying without feeling mentally fatigued, whereas if I'm studying with classmates I watch them shut down half way and they can't maintain focus even after another cup of coffee. Glad that's not me anymore.

I had near-fatal heart arrhythmia from going too hard on the caffeine man. It's nothing to mess with. I did a cold turkey quit myself (much easier for me as near-death experiences are quite motivating lol) and I can say it definitely "reset" my tolerance. I can have a few cups at a time otherwise I'll have crazy jitters and anxiety. Anyway, glad to see I'm not the only one with a similar experience

Depression is fucking serious for me when trying to quit habits. Fully mental and convince myself of failure of any kind. Meanwhile, my kids think the world of me and being mental has got to go, especially for them, but I'm otherwise wasting any and all potential by not progressing through addiction.
I get through it a little faster by incorporating intense training, but, honestly, I feel like shit at the gym mid workout sometimes.

I think what you experienced, that spacey out of body feeling may not have been the cause of an overdose, but the feeling of the caffeine hitting you which can be a trigger for anxiety and panic attacks because it mimics the sensation of adrenaline. Your body essentially went into fight or flight mode, and you became hyper aware of your surroundings but not at the same time which made you uncomfortable to a point where you were entering a panic attack. I think since you probably didn’t eat anything and you had almost three coffees in the span of a few hours your body actually felt the caffeine. Caffeine is a CRAZY trigger for anxiety!

I'm 7months off caffeine, takes me less then 15min to wake up, part of the trick is to sleep til you wake up naturally,
and dont eat before bed, especially anything with sugar in it.
i only drank coffee during the winter time more for nostalgic reasons and season, never really to wake up with it.
Aside that my whole thing was about performance so i was drinking redbulls, after doing my research on caffeine seeing that it is actually a drug, reading and feeling about the different symptoms and effects of what it does in your body, i quit cold turkey.
I only drink water and smoothies now.
Caffeine raises your cortisol levels which is the stress hormone, so you may gain energy but your increasing your sensitivity to everyday stresses.
I work with a guy that drinks alot of coffee, and caffeine based drinks, and he has a ton of energy but it takes very little for him to freak on on something, his teeth are all messed up too, i have a close friend who drank alot of pop for a bit and now because of that, after about less then a year i would say he lost alot of teeth also making them black.

Fed up with the headaches, I decided to stop last year cold turkey, man the withdrawal symptoms were heavy. I had extreme migraine, backpain and even throwing up. I could not go to work for like 1,5 week, I was really sick like heaving a heavy flu. Now I never drink coffee and energy drinks, and it was the best decision ever.

Took me watching this to realise that I’ve overdosed before too. I was going to the cinema and had a similar case of necking my own coffee and then someone else’s who didn’t want theirs. Going in to the film, it felt like I was on a mini love buzz. I wanted to talk to everyone and my heart was racing - I felt good. Then the film started and it was the most intense shit I’ve ever watched. My heart rate rose to the point where it was thumping against my chest and I was having what I’d describe as a small scale bad trip. I had to leave the film twice to try and calm myself down. I didn’t want to ruin it for my friends so I left alone. At this point, I’d forgotten about the coffee and thought I might be having a heart attack so I considered calling an ambulance. Finally I plucked up the guts to back in and finish the film, come what may and prayed for a happy ending. And when it finished, I burst into tears and sobbed uncontrollably for about 5 mins straight. It was absolutely euphoric and a genuinely powerful experience. My friends had no clue what was wrong with me. Coffee mate. The film is called The Guilty and is on Netflix btw 👍

It was this video that gave me the motivation and inspiration to quit caffeine. So thanks Joe you are awesome!!!. Over the last few years I'd started to use a ridiculous amount of coffee and so planned a gradual reduction over a few weeks. After 24 hours I didn't feel too bad, and so I stuck with complete abstinence. Currently I'm 6 days in and have had slight headaches and weird aching in my back (dunno if it's related). All side effects were manageable with two Ibuprofen. Sleep is already better. When I'm awake I'm astounded by my mental clarity and the degree to which I don't feel so drained. The mental prompts to have a cup of coffee are reducing, Ginger tea is my current go to, and I'm looking forward to trying other caffeine free alternatives. As Joe has said this really is a game changer.

I also just quit, 4days I was so tired. Feel totally fine now. I'm 42 and I was waking up in the morning feeling heavy and groggy. And thinking it was my age. It wasn't. I wake up now and within the first 2 to 3 minutes I'm completely alert. I have even energy throughout the day I never have anymore headaches. And I sleep deeper. It really was the caffeine all this time. It's as simple as that.

Brother, this is actually incredible. I've had very similar experiences with the "panic attack" like state from too much caffeine and i've always wondered what the weird vision changes and spaciness have been. It's good to know I'm not alone in these problems, they all started after having a really crazy experience one day where I had to pull over on the freeway and lay down in the back of my car. I think maybe they are panic attacks based on that one experience...

what you describe regarding the dreams is really interesting. i had the same exact experiences when coming off weed. never knew quitting caffeine had the same effect. also, your eyes being focused on one thing. thats the after effect of a panic attack/anxiety - your body is essentially in survival mode constantly and it has to focus on whats in front of it and what it can see because of a sense of imminent danger. even though you are not looking at anything dangerous, have no threats around our bodies evolved in such a way because back in the day when a predator was lurking around your camp you didnt have a chance to relax. very unsettling and i think its a great example of how our bodies and brains are still stuck in the stone age. i think this is one of your best videos because its very relatable and your honesty is very appreciated mate.

If I remember correctly, the much more vivid dreaming thing is a REM sleep build up effect. Anytime you sleep I think under the influence of some substance which alters your sleep capability, say caffeine (inherently might make sleeping more difficult) or marijuana or alcohol (where you are sedated but still not in REM sleep), your brain builds up a clock of all the time where you should have been in REM sleep but were not. When you go off the substance whatever it may been, you have a REM sleep dump where your dreams seem a lot more vivid and you remember them more clearly when you wake up.
Source: (with a handful of salt) I remember hearing Dr. Matt Walker talking about this specific effect on a podcast also, as a once heavy marijuana smoker after I stopped cold turkey, I had a few weeks of extremely vivid dreaming which passed over time.

    • @Culterin
      @Culterin 4 года назад +5

Not relevant to the video, but just wanted to chime in that the REM sleep dump is definitely a thing anyone that's used marijuana regularly and then stopped will recognize lol. Even just a couple days of smoking and you'll get a rebound for the first day or two after. And yeah, I've also consumed it heavily for over a month at times, and after dropping it also took several weeks until the sleep wasn't supercharged with REM dreams anymore. Really interesting how the body works like that.

I smoked weed every 2 days roughly for about 5-6 years and once I quit I had such intense dreams for a period of 6 months. They were so vivid you would not believe it. I would often wake up so sweaty from the dreams it was indistinguishable from coming out of the shower. That first 6 months was the most intense, since then my dreams have subsided but are still often very vivid and I am coming up on almost a year now.

I have ADHD and a highly addictive personality which can include alcohol, nicotine, adderall and caffeine. When I overuse or stop using any of these substances, but especially caffeine, I get these same affects. Weird dreams, hazy/out of body experiences, overly focused to the point that the rest of the world becomes absent and I become lost in that second and that object - feels very surreal, anxiety and the like. Experienced the fright and it is... well you can't explain it but I think you did well. Not fun. It subsides after quite a long time but I have not the balls to quit. Hey Joe, appreciate the real videos man the longer the better! I had a similar experience where I started a new job as a driver in a fresh food delivery company. Started work at 4:45am every day and was working until 6pm so started using caffeine as a tool to get me up and going on the morning, it slowly progressed throughout the day and turned into all day. When I hit a trough I'd just throw back another white monster, was probably having around 700mg-1g per day if not more. Got to the point after 2 years where my bowels became ridiculously overactive and I'd find myself like pushing for a piss without meaning too all of the time, so I'd p myself at work, in bed out for meals all sorts. Was only small amounts as my bowels were just trying to push everything out as soon as it came in. Didn't even realise it was caffeine related until I went to the doc and broke down my days with what I eat & drink. Craziest thing is around 6 months into my job my sister went to a spiritualist and they told her that someone in her immediately family needs to stop caffeine as its going cause serious problems in the future! At that point I'd just started smashing it and didn't take the warning:/ Got out of the job and now work online from home, stopped caffeine for around 6 months now, concentration is so much better and sleep is incredible, training is so much better too. Oh well just told the internet that at 23 I wet the bed but had to comment man was too relatable!! Keep killing it🤙

Because they were so cheap I would legit just binge on them and which was obviously not healthy but I didn't seem to care and when my panic attacks started to occur I was wondering what was going on and why and also how to stop it and the main things that I did find out is that when you do overdose on caffeine it's pretty bad it most of the symptoms are severe vomiting, nausea, even paranoia, anxiety. I'm on Day 80-something and immediately realized the dreams and you were the first to mention. It means we're getting deeper REM sleep, that was probably deprived before. That alone keeps me from going back. Similarly, breaking the habit/ritual is the hardest part, but three weeks should break that. I'm also into fitness and what I do now is first thing in the morning to grab big g;ass of cold water. It breaks the need to get a cup of Joe while satisfying your true need to replenish fluids after sleep.

The weird feeling of having too much coffee was how I felt 24/7 for my whole life up until last October when I had heart surgery. I have something called WPW. absolutely awful. Thankfully I feel great since the surgery.

Such a great honest video. I can relate to everything you have said man about the caffeine experience. I'm back in the cycle of addict but I just had one day off and it can be difficult on many levels but this video gives me good hope on going off it again. So thank you for speaking from your heart about it. Cheers !

Thank you for making this video. This definitvely sounds like a caffeine induced high or as I like to call them "sweat". Cafeine is an interesting substance when it comes to what people experience. However, contrary to popular believe, cafeine doesn't provide energy at all, it merely raises the metabolism. It actually gives you the illusion of energy whilst actually increasing your need for it through higher metabolic activity. Meaning, you will get drawn into it's vicious cycle.
At university throughout my sport & health bachelor, I got one of these caffeine scares and sweats too. I stopped cold turkey too. Then I asked one of my professors how caffeine worked. He explained the above as mentioned, but he explained something even more startling. The reason he ate a high meat based diet, was because he also dropped caffeine. He told me that the uric acid in meat has roughly the same effect as caffeine. Namely that it raises the metabolism in a rather similar way as caffeine does. He explained its effects as a false sense of energy. He stated this was why he was still so thin in his late 50s, compared to many of his age sake's. It gave him the illusion of energy and thus he ate less. He was a big man, so it was very interesting to hear! It actually scared me of meat for a while lol.
Sick stuff once you peel of the layers!

I've had a OD on caffeine while attending Full Sail University. We had a major project due the next day and final. I had so many energy drinks ( some were free because they passed them out outside) that eventually I had what felt like a hang over. I felt nauseous, sick, headache, diarrhea, stomach ache.... you name it I had it. It was the worse feeling aside from an actual alcohol hangover. I went to school the next day but felt like death. Never again. Have to keep track of your caffeine. Great video !!!!

I’m trying to quit weed right now and this video is relevant af. A lot of similar experiences.
Have a look at the effect quitting weed or alcohol has on REM sleep and especially dreams, them mad dreams you talked about could be explained there.
Appreciate the video my man, you come across very genuine when you speak. A rarity these days.
