Thanks for this, start flat bed work tomorrow and was told to go off and learn a Dolly Knot in case I need to sheet. Best video I've seen in terms of explaining it simply
i was sent home today from work because i did,nt have a clue using rachets, thanks pal informative video. my advice to all young new lgv drives out there dont panic never rush be prepared and keep learning, be chuffed.
This is great! I have my test on the 29th Nov and my instructor hadn't told me this could be a part of the test! I watch your other Mod 4 cpc video sometimes but I only came across this randomly by searching 'how to dolly knot' out of interest. Wish I knew how to tie it off though. Great video, very helpful.
Passed mod 4 this week after my practical test a few weeks back (first time). Just a note to say thank you so much for your informative videos. They have been spot on. Cheers mate!
The Dolly knot had always fascinated me,since the years I helped out on Rowlands Fair, and I watched Albert Rowland tying down tarps with that knot. He could do it so fast,it was unbelievable. I still even now think of it as one of the most fascinating knots ever invented. Thanks for the video!
Brilliant, best CPC video I've seen, great explanation of the dolly knot, I've looked at loads of videos scratching my head, this one was simple, nailed it. Thanks a lot.
@@kamranolodum it was a little while ago now but it was things like what type of restraint would you use for certain type of loads. Other than that I think it was stuff like the safety checks you have to do before commencing a journey. Try not to be too nervous and good luck 🤞
Passed my Module 4 at Guildford. Was nervous! Got 100per cent in the end. Well pleased. Cheers for posting the video. It did help. Bloke in vid was good at explaining it simple. Saw some of your EP boys up at test centre. Many Thanks. now for my C+E in september
As it happens, your video was the only reason I passed the cpc test. Don't count on Atkins lgv to help you, I was the only person to pass in my group and it was no thanks to their 5 minute walk around just before the test. Cheers EPC! Ps, I did the dolly knot in the end, it was the bit where you twist the rope I couldn't see at first.
+Chris Carroll Hi Chris, Thanks for taking the time to comment on this video, which was only for the purposes as a guide. The training companies should be giving you some more comprehensive training. All the same really pleased you did it and got it!
Just watched your video and learnt how to do that dolly knot. very useful. Thanks same time had fun time with my 12y. old daughter.. she can do it aswell now :D thank you for video...ready for my cpc at the beginning of january.
About time they offered training for load restraints. Whether or not you will need a dolly knot is immaterial. You should know it in case your only option is rope? Nice Samba's fella..
The "dolly knot" is still a must have in any drivers armoury. Good description and video from E.P.Training but there is a much easier, simpler way of tying one off.....
In Ireland thinking of going for the C Licence these videos are very informative will deff check out the rest . I am sure a lot of the procedures in the UK are similar to here. :-)
I was always taught a knot _veeery_ similar to what folks call a “dolly knot”, but the way you make the loop is different. I was taught by both my father and grandfather (who was in the Navy for years!) as a naval knot. It does the EXACT same thing, and while a dolly knot is already fairly easy to take apart, it’s still even _easier_ to take the knot I was taught apart.
Would just like to add, on the test you have the option of either ratchet strap or the dolly. So don'y panic if you can't master this, just go with the ratchet!
Many Thanks i am on a combined course paid for class 2 an me C+E etc. with co' in Hook who i sure you know. Did notice you use proper Artics not W+D which i would prefer to learn in Artic. All booked though. I wish you guys all the best in hindsight i would have booked you lot but it was paid for by 2nd party. Keep up the goid work Shaun.
Loading wood at portside in Shoreham with a gale force wind blowing in pissing down rain standing on the top of the load opening out my sheet at 12ft high , sliding everywhere and wind blowing sheet all over , fuck aye it was hard back in the day , glad when I stopped doing it .
All in all a good video for the new start. Dolly could be single or double, a second dolly could be used to make a rope hook where one is missing. The ratchet strap can go either through and up or just down.Excess rolled into a circle and tied off using itself.
i have to get some rope to pratice the dolly knot :) thanks for great advice and tips on how to pass lgv test great vids keep up the great work :) if i lived in surry id deffo come to use
Thanks to E P Training I took my national & international CPCs in 1990 and sailed through both. This video is a lesson on how to please an examiner who has probably never done the job, not how to secure a load. I would never fix a chain to a hook, only the chassis, and only fix a strap to a hook when the chassis is not accessable, ie over the 5th wheel. No criticism or offence is intended to the instructor. It also worries me to think someone driving a 44 tonne truck needs to be shown how to use a ratchet strap!
TBH I am still a big fan of roping and sheeting, for the majority of loads with the exception of steel. with a correctly roped and sheeted load, I can see what is happening with the load at all times. It was all I was issued with when I first started back in the day !
Hi just afte some advice. I ben driving coaches for 25 years. Got al my cards up today, but what do I need to go from psv to class 1 C + E . Is that something I could do ?
I have seen your video on what to use on ratchets and they way you use the left over of strap in the wind they blow loose and look untidy so to stop this thread the left over strap through the handle and fold the loose strap in about 6inches and put it under the handle before locking the handle strap they never move and look better ok ..they say by some comments that old drivers have bad tips but after 50 years I have had we could offer so much i had 30yrs driving out of swiss and to Russia and many other countries at -40 in Russia and i saw on of the other videos of an instructor say we dont use rope I think he was trained by the Army or so cos thats what they would say and i dont know any sheet on a flat bed that can be secured by ratchets alone ... take care stay safe I forgot when you made the hitch with the rope you locked the rope by going over it twice but when you do that you can't pull the rope you have to undo each one by hand but that tip is the old hand showing you sir
Sean, I have heard that the Dolly Knot is not tested in the CPC test anymore could you confirm or deny that please. I’m told it’s because roping is no longer done replaced by straps or chains (or both). Many thanks for the excellent videos.

Not sure if the test requires it but a dolly knot as shown is useless if not tied off afterwards. I personally finish with two half hitches underneath the dolly to lock it off.

how do you secure the bit of rope you are holding down after tying the dolly knot?
These days can only use a Dolly to secure a sheet & not the load. The load must have rachets or chain binders .

strange as I've just came out the army as a driver and I'm doing module 4 wednesday but we have rachet and straps facing outwards.
Jake Johnston you guys actually used ratchet straps 😂
so how to secure the rest of the rope at the end because it wasn't shown?
double hitch it!
thank you nicely explained
I assume you have to tie off the end of the rope to stop it coming undone??
Yes of course.
What a bloody boss 💪🙌

Thanks very much
Yes cv much better now
why didnt you use one chain as they do on tests
It's optional how you use the chains. You can use 1 or 2. We find it easier with 2. But it's up to you mate

dolly knot is not easy to remember specialy when the camera man is focused on a different part of the dam rope
soz
Be grateful you penis
You missed the bit on all of them, where you HAVE to twang the tensioned restraint, and confidently say "that aint going anywhere!!!"

Erm, how do you undo a dolly knot?
+roop298 Possibly too late but since no one else answered... Tied correctly a dolly knot should be simple to undo. He's never done that knot in a practical way, ie only as a training proceed, the loop was to big, wast of rope plus dangerous with big hoops snagging on passing items.
Who invented the the Dolly Knot< Dolly The Sheep did lol
when i was a lad it use to be called a Hitch,
When i was roping and sheeting i was trained to throw the end of the rope over the load and then secure it rather than secure the end and then throw ALL the remaining rope over, much easier, and my dolly knot was better than yours
