Steam Deck Windows 11 vs ROG ALLY (What using windows is like)

- Here are my thoughts on why windows 11 is actually not bad on handheld PC's and what using windows is like on both the ROG ALLY and the Steam Deck. #ASUS #steamdeck #Windows11
As someone that has the SteamDeck and the ROG Ally, I gotta say we are living in beautiful times for handled gaming. Both of these devices are amazing in their own ways. I kept Linux on the deck and got the Ally for windows. I gotta say that the Ally certainly isn’t for everyone. This device is really only for people that know their way around windows and understands technology. I would recommend the steam deck for most people but I prefer the ally, because I’m tech savvy and like being able to tinker.
Its all good technology is growing so far. 🤙🏼
100% agree with you on this. I don't have the Steam Deck, but I have enjoyed "tinkering" with the Ally as well. It's amazing being able to play just about anything from the couch with pretty good settings and 60+ FPS gaming. I have 100% enjoyed the system, but I can definitely see how it wouldn't be for everyone.
Yes the ally is definitely for someone who knows there way around windows
Agree!!
Bought Steamdeck 4 months ago, it's my first time using linux, I'm surprised by its file explorer(dolphin) I like how you can split and make tabs like internet browser it's way better than file explorer on my window10 desktop.
By far the best review and comparison I seen on here so many people on here are trying to start up some kind of crazy console war with these handhelds and while I understand and enjoy the competition it starting to become lowkey toxic!! 😂😂 both have they advantages and disadvantages and we should just appreciate both of them and how amazing technology has changed gaming throughout the years this was a good down to earth video I knew you wouldn’t disappoint when you made your purchase and im glad you’re enjoying it mane! 🔥
The war is silly. People feel too strongly about certain things and it takes away from the overall greatness of it all sometimes. Regardless of what’s better and why, I feel it’s important to acknowledge we’ve made it to this point in tech and that in itself is exciting. Thanks for the kind words and for watching the video. Appreciate it 🙏🏽
Awesome review man……the new update to hand held companion makes the the software experience pretty comparable to the rog ally. You can change refresh rate ,tdp, toggle on and off controller and all kinds of hot keys. All on the fly with a quick access menu.Just recently installed it and windows on my steam deck and it’s actually been pretty awesome.
Yeah handheld companion for sure adds a nice layer of accessibility. I just had issues with its controller compatibility in games in the past. But I know they’ve tweaked it over time so I’ll have to update it for sure and check it out. I thought HC was worth mentioning since it does add that extra layer of ease to to the deck, it’s just not part of the default windows experience on deck but then again nothing about having windows on the deck is default lol. But thanks for watching and giving me your feedback on HC! Appreciate it.
This is just the video I needed to help with my decision between the two. Thanks for the tips and insights 😉
No problem I’m glad you found it helpful
Man love your content, i know you the best explanation every detail about windows on both. This is not all RUclipsr talk about 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Just installed Windows 11 on the steam deck internal SSD, then installed a better version of the wifi driver. Paired with handheld companion, been running dying light 2 35-40fps low settings and monster hunter world 45fps medium settings. Using both trackpads to navigate windows and it's working stable and beautiful. once you unlock the Hz with a simple program, you can change all those settings on the fly with Handheld companion. Also using boosteroid is awesome on the deck
Great I’m happy to see someone actually taking the time to make their Steam Deck experience a good one.
As a user who uses windows on the steam. As long as you know how to tweak windows for gaming and apply most of that to steam deck. She is on hell of a machine. Also always tune the graphics on your device.
Agreed! W Take.
@@Misaac Thank You! I bought the 64gb one and after an extra $300 in upgrades and other stuff for it. I love it. Also a 2tb ssd with windows 11 tuned just right. The Steam Deck is still my number 1!
@@Towelie1994 sounds like you have an ideal setup after the upgrades! I love that the steam deck is still viable and preferable in some situations even though there are technically better handhelds out there. Steam Deck has a great future ahead with all the support it gets. Glad you are enjoying it.
@@Misaac yes sir I agree. And yeah I got a Quad monitor set up. I thanks to my awesome dock. I also have a 2tb ssd I upgraded from the 64gb originally. Windows 11 is running native. How ever I got a 1tb micro sd that has steamOS on it cause I am also a Linux user since I was a little kid. So I have space for both sides. I love the fact it’s so portable. I barely touch my custom built pc. And barely use my ps5 as well. I live this thing! Hope to see a steam deck 2 in the future so I do t have to use a monster to get more then 60hrtz. I also have a battery pack that’s magnetic sticks to the back. I can get about 10 hours on gaming or tasks. I have plans to change the case to a see through one and magnetic joysticks.
Handheld companion
I found that I had to use Windows on my SD most of the time to play even some of my Steam Games. It was a very glitchy experience and the 3rd party programs I had to use were glitchy at best and broken at worst. The Steam deck is mean to be played as a console for retro emulations and compatible Steam Games.
I 100% disagree, had mine a year and havnt had problems playing or dealing with it, much easier to use, I'm sorry you didn't get to learn it more, I have mine modded and with a ton of plugins, I havnt dealt with any glitches, only great performance, with way better ease of use then windows. You really just need to learn steam os, I had all my launchers set up, and all I needed was 2 separate launch hubs for all of them. Oh, and I mainly play triple a games on mine, it can easily handle a big majority of those too, indie games are even easier with high frame rates.
@@JDabz96 same here with that person saying that the SD is meant for emulation is completely wrong and this thing I’ve used for heavy games like forza and beamng drive and the thing played like if it were a full on laptop but yea it can be used for emulation adding another bonus to it and it is a good handheld console that can run triple a games at good quality
ive had the same experience, maybe were just too stupid edit: i dual booted.
I'll probably put windows on my own steam deck. I already have to do a ton of tinkering on the deck to get a lot of my stuff to run that would just be an easy 1 click or maybe a drag and drop on windows.
Much rather have to do a little set up at first and then have a functional windows handheld then every time I want to load mods or some things having to jump through crazy hoops and even then some things like Blish hud on GW2 just does not work well do to how overlays work on Linux.
You are correct both devices are amazing. I have them both and I use them both. 🤙🏼
Nice man, sick of reading that the Steam Deck is trash by those who only have the Rog Ally.
I've been wondering if you can use the Microsoft movies and tv app on either of them? I've been looking for an answer to this for a while. Thanks in advance.
I haven’t tried but I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to
I have W11 on the deck running from an SD and it runs bad and the fan runs like crazy?
Personally I will wait for a leap in the optimisation of a Windows based handheld gaming rig and stick to Steam OS... and as for the ROG I am going to wait until there is a updated unit with a larger capacity battery.
Pro tip.. don't use the SD. SSD 1tb is a must for it to run faster. And I recommend windeck. It's a debloated version of Windows. It's not Linux... It's windows modified. But it's really rea good! But if you don't work with music, or multiplayer games stuff and use a one machine for all, yeah you don't need windows. Also if you don't use opera GX XD
Also yes! The trackpad is essential for handheld pcs! Not only for games, but... Everything else.
I love the ally so much!
Me ✌🏽
Me too im married to it lol 🙃
My dude, great video once again. I'm actually going to sell my Deck and buy the Ally. I pretty much only use Windows and only use SteamOS for EmuDeck. My only concern is buggy software and comfort. But yet again, Windows for the Deck is not even official, so the experience it will be kinda the same if not better on the Ally. What do you feel about the ergonomics? How does it compare to the Deck while holding it?
the ergonomics I have to make a video about like I said at the end of this one. The comfort level is something to adapt to for sure. My hands aren’t too big so I think I will adapt the more I use it but i feel like certain things are more comfy IMP on the deck. But I’ll talk about that more in a separate video.
Emudeck can also be used on windows btw!
I run windows 11 optimizer scrips on all my handhelds that have windows 11 in them to remove bloat ware
I have both. I dual booted on my steam deck. I found myself mostly using windows on my steam deck. A lot of your headaches with steam and windows is handled by handheld companion. Just have to start at boot up and you don’t need to worry about all that launching notepad nonsense.
That being said you are absolutely right. Ally was designed around windows. Steam deck with windows is an afterthought.
I am aware of handheld companion being a good alternative and I used it for some time but it was giving me issues on some games like Fortnite for example it was booting me from matches and telling me there was untrusted software/hardware detected and it was only happening when using handheld companion so I resorted to just using Glosc since I’ve never had issues or errors when using it. I still think HC is a great tool to have for a variety of other reasons.
@@Misaac yeah there are a few pieces it warms you not to use like the TDP and Fan stuff. I used a variety of things before it including Glosc and none were quite as user friendly. I had mine setup to basically be a desktop profile by default and then if I held menu for three seconds it would convert to an Xbox setup. End of the day though this is the kind of stuff you have to deal with running a steam deck on windows. The Ally isn’t perfect but having it solve so many of these problems as well as it does out of the box is pretty great.
Great video about windows on handhelds! I sold my gaming laptop to buy the rog ally, u think it could be used as laptop for school and gaming? I already have a desktop Pc as well, would be 2nd gaming device
It can be used for anything you need it for honestly. As far as like school work and what not I’m sure it would handle any of that with no problem (Microsoft word, Google docs etc)
@@Misaachow about steam deck with win 11, its good for daily user like Microsoft Word?
Handheld Companion is a lot easier set up for controller support on the steam deck
I have handheld companion it just acts crazy at times so I’d rather use GLOSC. Glosc works great once it’s open.
How is hand held companion for the ally what exactly is it
Sorry but that is false Ally is literally one click lol
Can you do a step by step video on how to get controller and other games to work on steam deck while using windows... I installed, but call of duty doesn't run, games are slow.. etc
This need more likes this pretty straight up what ppl need to know
Preciate it!
Hey, I'm an old dude and i want to start gaming. These things look fun but what do you think i should buy to play games on that is made specifically for gaming. I'm a little gray in this area😅😅
The steam deck might be up your alley since it’s stractured a bit more like a console while still being being a powerful handheld pc. The windows handhelds are great but might require more navigating than what some would consider comfortable or straight forward.
Steam deck is the perfect combo... Why not run both? I'm not a Linux hater, Infact! I'm impressed how well Linux run games and apps :) but... It doesn't run everything I need without a hassle. I'm not an it guy. But I'm not a fan of the ally....
Can you play game pass games offline on steam deck? Is there any conceivable way to?
Both great devices. Going with the steam deck because it's just going to supplement my desktop PC with emulation and older titles. Games that will just feel better laying in bed or on a sofa, in the portable form factor.
Great reason to get a steam deck and I’m sure you will be satisfied with results for the intended purpose you’re getting it! Enjoy
@@Misaac finally secured one in the sale, had no stock for months where I’m at
I picked Steam Deck first because I'm probably going to have a bigger library there. But to have a device with Windows 11 pre installed is just convenient. I'd rather not do the install on my Steam Deck. My Rog Ally will be a portable Game Pass machine which is just fantastic.
What thumb stick covers are you using they look nice

How's that program you said gives you controller support spelled? Glosg?
GLOSC and there’s a specific version you need that is the working one which I found on Reddit. But I’m at work right now so I’d have to look back into it later.
handheld Companion is the way to go for controller support on the deck
What do you think is better to run Warzone, looking to buy it just for Warzone
The Ally is more powerful so it runs warzone better than the steam deck can and there’s also the fact that you need windows to play warzone which means that’s a whole extra step of getting windows on your system if you go the steam deck route. Both can play the game. 1 better than the other but also more expensive. Of cost doesn’t matter the ALLY is the better choice.
Das ist Mal ein fairer Vergleich. 👍
Ghost spectre and it run the games the same but ui easy to use on steam os
What caps are you using the Ally?
They were included with my steam deck cover.
syntechhome.com/products/silicone-protective-case-compatible-with-steam-deck-black?variant=42349014974629
Steam with windows like it's had 3 systems In one
If you just open Steam into big picture mode on the deck it's a lot easier to use. 🤷
I do that
@@Misaac i still miss the side bar options from Steam OS to change the frame rate and performance stuff.. but it's close enough for me.
Was waiting for this comparison for too long, cuz most game devs relegate gaming on Linux to being an absolute fucking joke, which can make multiplayer gaming on the Steam deck extremely difficult at best and impossible at worst. I don't see the game devs' opinion on Linux changing any time soon, so installing Windows on the Steam Deck's likely gonna be the closest thing to the Steam Deck receiving long-term support in terms of supported games, and you also have access to GOG offline installers along with the -Chivalry 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3 launcher- Epic Games Launcher
Glad you found the video useful! Appreciate you ✊🏽
What thumb caps are those on the Ally?

Not sure if they are sold alone but this is how I have them.
@@Misaac Okay thanks!
@@MobileDecay no problem!
Man 400 % but you need to put a hard drive or a v2 SD card...512 model is 600... I really do not understand why reviews keep saying 400 when with a 64gb you can not even boot 1 game
$400 is what it cost to get your foot in the door. so its okay to say this regardless of what you might have to buy afterwards. you never know, people might have other Micro SD cards or external storages (for those dock users out there) lying around that they might have used for nintendo switch/PC or something and dont have to spend extra lol I bought a 1tb SD card for mine so yeah i spent more than $400 but $400 is the price of the device. What people decide to spend after is on them. I've seen my same 1tb SD card go on sale for $60 which is around the price of a new game these days. If people can think about buying new games then they can afford to expand their storage.
@@Misaac so you just buying something to say that you have one to your friends when you cant do a thing with it lol xD... Ok maybe if you have a spare 1tb card you can say you spent 400$. But I dont tjing most of us have. If I bought the 64gb model I would add a 512+512gb.extra cost +100$. With ally you can fit a 2280 nvme. Got one for 80$.
@@MicaelAzevedo I mean you don’t know everyone’s scenario. If someone buys the $400 model and is happy streaming every single game via gamepass and suddenly wants to start downloading their games to the system later on they still made a good investment because in the long run it let them play downloaded games. Just another scenario to give some perspective.
One thing almost no one talks about in the ALLY is in the armory crate your ablr to choose your Vram for the gpu by stealing your Ram in a way which is awesome but i think asus should of included 32gb of ram or something slightly higher so play games with higher settings, my brother has the steam deck and also has windows 11 on it because we grew up with windows i would recommend people the deck only if they know how to mess with linux since its a complicated process and i hope Microsoft can come up with some kind of option in the settings soon where windows 11 turns into handheld gaming mode making it look like windows 8 I think windows 8 should come back for laptops, handhelds, or surface but in a windows 11 way i think it would be very nice
im useing steam deck tools for me works better with the games i like to play
So the Ally doesn't have too much bloatware??
When running any of these devices on windows, there’s a lot of apps and programs you can get rid of. There’s tools that can also remove the bloatware for you.
@@Misaac Sweet. I was worried about getting one. 16gb isn't enough. I wish there was a 32gb model
@@Mr_J112 I think that’s the next big step for the scene as a whole. MORE VRAM 😂 we will get there eventually.
How is battery life on steamdeck with windows 11 , does it use more power or same as steamos?
Depends what you’re doing on it 🤔 in some instances could last the same or longer. In others it could be shorter. I’d assume if it’s just sitting there doing nothing it would die faster than SteamOS being idle. But I haven’t used SteamOS so I have nothin to compare it to.
Steam deck is a console experience. Keep on doing what you're doing Valve
Steam deck is a handheld PC. It’s your choice to use it more as a console or use it more like a traditional computer. It can do both.
I’m a Pc gamer that only use windows so when Linux fanboys trash windows, I’m like 👁 👁
Lol don’t mind them they’re goobers 😂
@@Misaac they’re hard to ignore due to how annoying they are 😂🤣
I got the ally on launch!! Not great devices!! People that already got the deck!! I can understand y it’s a hard choice to stay or switch
Yep... Lol glad I bought the steam deck Instead. Asus really doesn't know what they are doing...
steam deck is just a pc console the ROG ally is everything movies /games /music /youtube it is awesome !!
They can both do all of those things.
Window on deck vs Ally. Not many have talked about it. I don't even own a single AAA titles. Interesting...
I hardly play indies or emulate 🤔 quite the opposite haha
As a windows engineer, windows is a terrible OS for handhelds, shoe horned onto a device. Asus support sucks and armory crate on my $2k laptop is a POS, would not trust them to support the user in anything. I find people that use windows are naive and not technical, its just they only know windows somewhat and new tech makes them fearful.
Do I need to be technical to enjoy my games though?
All the proms and bugs people been having wit the ally!! Cause I been a console player my whole life!! I just got into pc gaming wit the ally!! My point is! I am not tech savvy or know much but the basics on windows!! I PREORDERED THE ALLY AND GOT ON LAUNCH!! I haven’t had one prom wit it!! Forza didn’t launch one time!! I raise the vram to 8 gb!! It’s been good every since
SteamDeck windows tools works 10 tunes better
Steam OS to me is just so much better than windows, its easy asf to use and really streamlines gaming on a pc, i couldnt imagine putting windows on it when steam os is just so much better, if compatibility becomes less of an issue, steam os would be the top OS for gaming, hands down..
Compatibility is an existing issue so I refuse to use it. You’re right it’d be more viable for gamers if it wasn’t an issue but it is. Therefore it’s not better for my use case scenario.
Steam os is still sluggish and you still have to fuck around with settings to make it run good. The Ally just works with all games. Windows runs smooth as fuck also
I recently bought ROG Ally and left the Steam Deck collecting dust in my drawers. As nice and polished as Steam OS is, nothing beats having Windows 11 to run all my games without dealing with compatibility issues and anti-cheat software not working on Linux. I saw myself using the Ally a lot more than the Deck because I could play games I didn't own on Steam and could play MWII that I HAVE on Steam but Steam Deck can't run it because of anti-cheat software not supported. I have since returned the Ally as I just wanted to test it and try it out but wow I feel the need to wipe my Steam Deck and install Windows 11 on it...
@algebruh_m8652 I mean, windows has a lot more problems than steam os, only issue with steam os is compatibility, and that's because of microsofts monopoly, once that gets fixed in the future, windows will be obsolete for gaming, and the only games I can't play are certain anti cheat games.
@@JDabz96 in his case switching to windows makes sense if he’s going to play games he can’t play at all on SteamOS. Especially after using the Ally and realizing he’d want to play those missing games on a handheld. Sure there might be issues (none that have stopped me from enjoying my games) but at least he won’t be locked out of part of his library. Again, for as long as compatibility remains an issue SteamOS to me, and many others is obsolete.
The answer is simple get the ally! Did you ever use the track pad on a switch? No! So why care about it. Also 4 core VS an 8 core can't compete! Ally ftw amd smoother experience overall. I own both my deck is useless now.
Completely desagree... If you like the ally fine, but the answer is get the one you feel more comfortable with it for your tasks. For me! Trackpad are a must. I always use it. That's the strongest point of the deck. 1tb easy
@unkown34x33 just touch screen it . Track pad what for ? If really want . Connect a mouse 😂
I have both ...WIN 11 is buggy as hell. Returned it after 2 weeks , keeping the DECK ! Ally battery sucks worse than DECK !
its literally the same battery, its just like a car you can get the small motor less performance ,more mpg, or the big motor more performance, less mpg. it all depends on the games you like and the quality of display you are ok with. steam deck was buggy as hell on launch too. personally ill take less battery life and higher performance.
@@Jimmyz96 Good POV.
Ally sucks joystick sucks I don't like it
This device made using windows on steam deck feel bad
It did in a way but not to the point where it’s un-usable
@@Misaac the fact I am not installing all the third party tools for controller is just too great. Enjoying the ally so far.
@@Misaac I tried it too, but I made sure I put on SD card for Windows 10. It was okay on the Steam but on the other hand, my ROG Ally rocks, the windows 11. 🤙🏼
I would be miserable using Windows on any of these. Heck, I would be miserable using Windows on my desktop computer even. I feel like people use Windows mostly out of familiarity or because they are invested in Windows with things like "games pass". But honestly, Windows have become an objectively bad desktop OS over the years. (especially for private users) And I can't even begin to express how much joy I have found in computers again after switching to Linux full-time. There's honestly nothing I miss with Windows these days.
Simple. Don’t be miserable. Don’t use it. Use what you like. I’ll use what I like. We all have reasons for why we use and like what we do. Those reasons are not the same for all of us. Objectively, games + devs and their anti cheats don’t always play nice with Linux but do with windows. It’s that simple. I’m going to play where I’m allowed to play. I don’t care about convincing others to use what I’m using I simply share what I use and why. It’s ok for people to disagree with me. I’m not the one using their device or playing their games. You’d also be less miserable if you weren’t paying so much attention to how everyone else uses their tech. Especially if you can’t understand their POV. Keep an open mind, stay positive, and enjoy your games 😌
@@Misaac Yeah, I mean, I totally agree with you. It's just a shame that Microsoft has such a tight grip on the market right now... Because ultimately, what I would like to promote is more choice, more user freedom. I can understand why people feel the need to use Windows. Heck I still dual boot to Windows only to play VR on my HP Reverb G2 (which requires Windows Mixed Reality)...
What sucks in today's PC landscape is that Windows is the "only" option to a lot of people, and that kind of monopoly isn't very good for the open-ended nature of the PC industry as a whole. The killing blow for me has really become the targeted ads, data collection and forced services that has become an integral part of Microsofts strategy with Windows. It feels wrong needing to buy a license for an OS only to get served ads, services etc. Especially since it really mostly benefit Microsoft rather than myself as an end-user. But soon enough people will forget what the PC industry once was.
You know, I am old goat in my 40s, and clearly remember the time of 8-bit-, 16-bit, and 32-bit PCs that were not IBM compatibles (Like Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Atari ST, Amiga). Back then you had so much choice and unique flavors in the PC markets. These days it's just a Microsoft and Apple Duopoly. This is why I think Linux needs to grow as an OS, since it embraces what the PC platform stands for. "Personal" Computer.
@@PixelShade You made some good points. I get where you and many others are coming from about the whole wanting a more open end and private experience. I’ve said in the past that I understand why people like Linux and I could see how it is a great OS for those who are going to take advantage of the things it offers. I personally just don’t care enough or feel the need to manipulate/alter an OS. Mainly because everything I’ve wanted to do has been doable via windows whereas certain things I’ve wanted to play on Linux, I haven’t been able to. Which is contrasting to what you and many others try to promote. What good is freedom when I can’t boot up my favorite game without the fear of being banned? I get this isn’t necessarily the OS at fault but instead how devs, games, and anti cheat software are supported or work with the OS but it’s still the reality of things when choosing to game on Linux.
I also think there are better ways to inform people on why Linux is viable and why people should consider trying it out. The best way to promote any sort of message is showing what you’re supporting in action and why you’re choosing to do so. That way people can relate and reciprocate. Linux users especially elitists like to criticize and assume that other peoples experience is inferior before informing or giving reasons as to why things are better or how that particular person might benefit from using the OS. Aggressively Throwing general statements is not going to get through to people. Assuming that the opposing opinion is wrong by default without understanding the reasons is the majority of the problem and it’s what I see most of. For people that want to promote something so badly, they sure make themselves unapproachable. Makes no sense.
Maybe if Linux users gave insight/feedback by providing options to particular situations they could see the opposing user benefiting from, People would actually learn things and get curious and want to discover whatever there is to be discovered.
I have always promoted the ability to choose. I never say that my way is the only way because at the end of the day we all think differently and can choose what we want to use and why. I share my choices and don’t expect everyone to agree with me. I do it so people can gain perspective and because I know others will relate to what I’m sharing. I said alot here but it’s because I know maybe others will read this and gain some perspective as well. It’s also nice having a normal conversation without turning it into an all out fanboy brawl.
It's not bad
Please trim your black panther claws...it's distracting.
Look away
Windows sucks just evolve to the true OS LINUX/Steamos stop supporting propietarry BS!
Use it yourself. You aren’t playing my games for me 😇
