Take care of your mental health guys. Am here watching this because it puts me at ease. Watching all this good food and cultures even though am really broke. It makes me smile.
I used to have a Haitian roomy that could throw down in the kitchen and this video is flooding back memories. Pikliz is fairly easy to make and adds so much flavor to any dish. Haitians also use black mushrooms bullions called Djon Djon that adds flavor to rice and also makes it black. I highly recommend. If a Haitian person invites you to a cookout, don’t hesitate to go lol
oh sonny..this touched my belly, and my heart. as a jamaican who honour and have a special place in my heart for haiti, it is always good to see platforms like yours spread truth to word about cultures (non white ones especially) that will hopefully diminish many myths and false narratives about black cultures that have been subject to centuries of oppression and hardships... and no better way to do it than through delicious food😊
It feel very familiar...very similar to some of the foods we love of course I think they do it differently....Love that we are different and the same at the same time (Caribbean ppl that is ) I love us ❤❤❤
I did medical relief work in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. We were told not to eat any fresh food because of bacteria that would make us sick. Every day this young man would bring me fruits that you could peel and boiled eggs. One time I was given the slaw. It looked so yummy and I had to try it. Delicious and spicy! Luckily I didn't get sick. The people of Haiti are the most amazingly beautiful in heart and spirit that I have ever met. Resilience is the core of a Haitian. I left a piece of my heart there.
This is why they mess it up just to show the world that the country is bad dangerous and poor but Haiti is not poor they make it look poor think about that I'm telling you bro
Thank you for saying that ! You are telling the💯 truth! We get a bad rep for the few that are up to no good, and from those who would like to see is stay under their thumbs! Haitian food is excellent. But why thank him for this video? Meanwhile he featured the country as a giant slum with no redeeming qualities and you're thankful. I wish the ladies fed him trash. Some Haitians today have gotten so used to their bullshit that they are now content with the crumbs of a bone that these paternalistic white ''liberals'' are willing to throw their way every now and that. The ancestors would NOT approve. They were proud men and women and they fought too hard and too long and would never accept or thank this bullshit

I rented a room in an apartment building from a Haitian family once, and the mother would bring me a heaping tray of food to my room every night after I came home from work until one night I decided to eat with them in the dining room...they had given me about 1/3rd of all their food, even though there was family of 5 eating together. That was the most delicious, healthy and blessed food I've ever eaten in my entire life.

This is the reason why this channel is my favorite channel on RUclips, it ain't JUST about the food. It about people and their stories and how the food is integral to their story. The only person who did this better was Anthony Bourdain.
Sir, your video almost brought tears to my eyes as I remember my mom cooking for us as children. She had to leave Haiti due to the poor living conditions, but she always made her best to ensure that we stayed in touch with our culture. Legume is my favorite Haitian food. ❤
Sonny (and crew) thank you so much for this episode. It really does humanize the Haitian people to me. The news stories about this divided, island nation only makes me think about chaos, and misery. So what you and guest Chef Simeon talk about really does help with the perception of the Haitian people.
I love how you incorporate the history, culture, and story of the people in relation to the foods that you try and places that you visit. It's like an entertaining mini documentary that's educational at the same time. I'm getting the Anthony Bourdain-style vibes - keep it up!!

You can definitely film in Haiti most of the craziness happens in Port-au-prince. There are plenty of other beautiful cities and villages in Haiti to visit. Don’t let the Media fool you 🇭🇹
That is changing. Especially after the hostage mess. No embassy would recommend to go there. That used to be true. Being from Cap Haitian we had option to land straight there. You have no clue how many family members and friends that went and did not come back. The craziness is amplified. This nothing like the previous kidnapping waves of the 2000’s. Nobody is safe. Very few are thriving. That makes you a target. Before y’all argue with me. I am well aware how Haiti is. Live there my whole life, went through the earthquake. Could not attend my grandmother funeral because of the President assassination. They went and shot their guns in the church. We always had to fend for ourselves because police is a running joke. Just owning a gun is not cutting it anymore. You went and came back that’s good for you. For me i will not play Russian roulette with my life. That’s not me bashing or talking bad that what i’ve been through. It is a pain to us young adults especially some of us that had to flee.

Sonny, you and your team remain the best when getting to know new cultures! With your open mind and your empathetic approach, you allow even the poorest and most marginalized people their dignity and are able to elevate your show from a simple food show to something that just goes way beyond. As you so rightly have made a point of showing, it's not just about the food and the dishes themselves, it's about the peoples and cultures behind the food and providing this context makes all the difference and helps us all to learn and maybe take a step out of our own preconceived notions. Well you must be one of the few Americans to feel that way because the truth of the matter is that Haiti is under a violent US colonial rule right now. Has been since 2004 . An unofficial colony that is, with all of the inconveniences and humiliations of a colony and none of the official protections. Along with Canada and France, the racist US cancelled Haiti's sovereignty on its 200 anniversary of independence. The truth must be told.

@@matthewstephens6502 It's just food that is borne of desperation which is the cheapest to alleviate the hunger for those poor souls who have no food they can afford anymore. Nobody in Haiti eats it when they can get something else. I think Haitian food is the best in the whole Caribbean.

I can only agree. I used to live in Haiti and had a restaurant in Port au Prince in about 1981. Was married to a Haitian lady for almost 25 years.(I am Austrian)
As a wife to a haitian man, and being brought into his family. I prefer Haitian food over my native Caribbean/Guyanese food, its amazing and delicious, and the culture is so beautiful, I wish there were more places in my state to try and share this food, most of the time you have to know someone who can cook.

Aside from the food, what world view of Haiti do you think he portrayed here? I'm gonna need my Haitian people to stop being satisfied with the crumbs they send our way and see the forest for the trees.
This is the reason why this channel is my favorite channel on RUclips, it ain't JUST about the food. It about people and their stories and how the food is integral to their story. The only person who did this better was Anthony Bourdain.

YES!

@@BlackMoonstone531 I don't believe in Racism; but more Americans should Accept our Family in Haiti and it'd be beautiful to see Haiti turn into a modern State with full benefits for the people, the American people need to aid and protect each other and help together to make better changes for both lands 💞
