My food adventures with my friends Chef Jason Peru and Candice Mohan continued in my hometown of Miami with some Haitian cuisine! Come with us as we eat authentic Haitian food at Naomi’s Garden!
Naomi’s Garden is a restaurant and lounge at the corner of three neighborhoods, including Little Haiti. Haitian food has lots of Creole and Caribbean influences, and I couldn’t wait to check it out!

👕 DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH: teespring.com/stores/davids-b...
They have a little window where you can place your order. You can also see the different foods they have. I could see soups, casseroles, meat, seafood, poultry, vegan options, and more.
Inside, we met the owner, Noam, who took us into the kitchen, where they were making beans, mayi (cornmeal), mayi kole (cornmeal with pinto beans, spices, etc.), rice, cabbage salad, oxtail, greens, and a spice blend called epis (which is used in nearly every Haitian dish)!
They also made a spicy, baked macaroni and cheese, which I couldn’t wait to try. There was also chicken marinating in the epis for three days before they bake it. The pieces of chicken were huge!
I couldn’t wait to try everything! There were some pickled and spicy salads, liver stew, jerk chicken, fried grouper, and more there. We got three different places so we could try as much as possible!
We headed over to to the outdoor dining hall with our plates. It’s a nice, large garden area.
The spinach stew was creamy and similar to collard greens, while the legume (veg stew) was so flavorful! The jerk chicken was so tender it fell off the bone, and the oxtail contained tons of tender, fatty meat. I had to suck out the marrow!
I loved the spicy cabbage salad. It contained a nice amount of vinegar as well. It was almost like a fresh, non-fermented kimchi! The baked chicken epis was flavorful and moist, with a crispy, roasted exterior.
Next was the mayi kolé, which were like grits with kidney beans. It was so tasty and grainy, and felt very healthy, too. I really loved the fried plantains, too.
The spaghetti with hot dogs was really tasty. The andouille sausage in it was nice, too! I loved the massive portion sizes here!
The fried grouper was a fantastic fried fish filet. There were no bones. Adding some pikliz (pickled cabbage, carrots, bell peppers, and scotch bonnets) added a crunch and some heat. It was the perfect combo!

@ Arlene: I like Trini food to the point that I taught myself how to make buss-up shut roti about 6yrs ago. I used RUclips as my guide.
And they turn out soft and flaky!! I have Trini & Guyanese friends that are VERY impressed by my roti making skills cause they themselves can’t make the skins, lol,

@ Arlene: YUP☺️!
❤🇭🇹. 🇹🇹
@ Davidsbeenhere: I’m Haitian and I just want to tell you that the “Pikliz” is not a salad. It’s a SPICY condiment. Sometimes because of language barrier things are not properly translated in English to other cultures trying Haitian cuisine. Also, you are correct the cornmeal is grits (yellow grits). Our cuisine just have many ways of elevating grits. The one you had was with pinto beans, coconut milk, and blend of fresh seasoning.
😁😁 mete limyè pou yo
@ Kanzee: Oui, cherie!☺️ I’m so tired of hearing ppl calling Pikliz “salad” and no one correcting them or teaching them. The Trini guy was right to comparing to Jamaican Escovitch. They’re both our own spin on spicy condiment to consume with fried meats/fish.
And it’s GRITS YES! I’ve heard it being referred to as “corn mush”. Each Caribbean island have a different name for grits. For Italians it’s Polenta. Italians will never allow ppl to call their Polenta “corn mush” or “corn meal” just like Americans won’t allow other cultures to call their version cornmeal or mush either.
@@newyorkapple6192 ma Cherie I feel bad whenever they do that frrl .. anyway pikliz c pikliz .. salad c salad… I don't want them to mix things up. the owner of the restaurant should be able to make the difference well over 20 years old and the world will watch you…. bro it’s not fair, put some respect on the culture… gen on belle show ki rele bestfoodreviews yo t pase Bahamas it was amazing to see how they explained everything about our diri sos pwa legume even c t belle bgy 😃😃
@Kanzee: Yes, I saw the one in Bahamas.
But yes, I agree. There’s a lack of respect when it comes to Haitian culture and ppl period!. I get the feeling of ppl wanting to keep the negative image of anything Haitian. Hence why rather than explaining what the dish is in an inviting way they devalue it by using the term “cornmeal”. It just makes it sound like some ordinary dirt poor struggling ppl food. Yes, the INGREDIENT IS CORNMEAL/GRITS. But that is NOT the name of the dish. In contrary I don’t think any other culture have elevated grits with multiple delicious way of making it. And this guy who’s been with these women and Haitian ppl FOR TWENTY YEARS and FLUENT in English SHOULD KNOW EXACTLY how to eloquently explain Haitian food properly!
Calling the Pikliz “salad” is putting an image as if Haitian ppl don’t know what an actual salad is. We eat SALAD and make several versions of salads THANK YOU!! So I don’t appreciate the way that’s coming across. Also, our “sauce pois” have been said to be called “beans purée”. That’s another way of making it sound like scrap food or dirt poor ppl food that is quickly put together to fill the belly up. And it’s quite insulting because Haitian food is VERY TASTY and time consuming to make! We’re VERY CLEAN and have A LOT of pride in our cuisine just like any other culture!…. Especially Caribbean culture.
And NO, it’s stewed beans or peas JUST like the rest of the Caribbean islands. We have our very own unique and VERY tasty version of executing stewed beans! The lack of respect pisses me off.
This man is making a killing off of our cuisine having these women cook our delicious dishes and I’m not satisfied with the lack of respect when explaining each dish. The Trini guy and lady were more informative and on point with explaining some of the dishes.
These women should have had their OWN BUSINESS cooking these lovely delicious dishes and feeding Miami.

I made some one time and brought a nice serving of some for my girlfriend and her hubby while at work so they BOTH can enjoy when she gets home. She ended up eating some at work for lunch and then left the rest at our departmental fridge for the next day. She said she wasn’t sharing squat after she tasted it, lol, smh. Thank you for acknowledging the richness of Haitian cooking and culture. They are some of the most generous souls. Shame they are still misunderstood.
Thank you. The light will rise one day.
Haitian cuisine does not include curry. We cook with cloves, garlic, pepper, citrus. We don't use jerk seasoning either that's Jamaican cuisine. All in all thank you for representing our culture.
You are correct
I am Haitian, we don't ever cook with curry.
@@nerlyferistin6361 I didn't think so
You stole this outta of my mouth. I think the owner is clueless as to what makes haitian cuisine so unique ...too bad the actual cooks are not given a chance to talk more..."the jerk spicy chicken..." Haitians don't do jerk chicken....this dude needs to stfu..but otherwise i really enjoyed the video. the food looks delish..😋
Exactly, that's the point in my comment. Any restaurant ran by someone other than a person from the culture in which the food comes from is not credible if you ask me. Where I am at many of the Caribbean restaurants cook oxtails/curry but not like Jamaicans but they say it's Jamaican food.
Just to let you know, that the green stew leave is not spinach but lalo. It's a healthy green and have medicinal property that is why when they cook it, they don't put to much seasoning in the recipe.
I was shocked when the owner referred to it as spinach smh.
@@saucyt8 Lalo, Jute is a direct connection to African food. They make versions in Ghana , Benin and other countries in West Africa.

I will back you up anytime anywhere and anyhow
On a positive note, thank you for showcasing the haitian cuisine, we need more videos like this out there. And thank you for appreciating haitian food like the unique and true treasure it is. HOWEVER, like so many ppl mentionned in the comments, there are some corrections to be made to not mislead non-haitians out there: no curry spice or jerk chicken in the haitian cuisine, but this haitian restaurant happens to serve other carribean dishes as well. Pikliz is not a salad!! It is served as condiment WITH other food to add a bit of a spicy flavour. Think about it like hot sauce. That's what happens when you eat it like coslaw (which it is not!): you get a runny nose! and best believe your face WILL be on fire like the man on this video!!! 😂 I hope he recovers. Our cuisine is not "creole inspired" or of "carribean influence" it is rather unique even among the other carribean islands. Let's not mention Haitian ppl are originally creole people themselves, we are authentically creole, so the words used in the video are very questionable 🤔. Please do not compare with Louisiana or New Orleans cuisine which I know are considered "creole" in the US. The creole ppl and creole language have a different historical context and trajectory in Haiti than what it refers to in the US as I came to understand.
Agree and by the way new Orleans does have a lot of Haitian Creole influence

That's much like Nigeria and Ghana, so naturally African.
Exactly. We used tomato paste to make the gravy, not curry. Haitians don't use curry
@@8mondaymonkey curry is a spice blend. The addition of tomato is not the components of a curry because there are many Indian curry dishes that do not use tomatoes

So I'm a kind of affluent white guy and my family would say negative things about Haitian people. Then on my own I learned the really amazing history of Haiti and the strength and perseverance of Haitians after being punished ever since 1804 by France and the US for their fight for freedom 💪🏿, and is owed at least $122 billion in reparations. Now I have really great high spirited and loyal Haitian friends and love Haitian food, especially legume and the dark rice I think mushroom gives it the color? My mother and I are Haitian and we use curry to marinade meat. Everyone cooks differently. It also depends on where they were raised and what you’ve been exposed to. The first time I had jerk was in Haiti over 20 yrs ago. The cook had never left Port au prince a day in her life. Cashew stew is very popular in Cap Haitian compared to Lalo that’s eaten in another part of the country. It all depends. Loved the video!
Diaspora Haitians (in USA) may use curry in their food ...I do too every once in a while but Haitian cuisine traditionally doesn't use curry. That's mostly a Jamaican/Trinidad spice due to the Indian influence in those islands. Jerk is also Jamaican although in the south of Haiti (Leogane) they do cook with lots of black pepper and make food that's almost jerky
@TheZarea is 100% right. Traditionally, curry isn't used in Haitian food. Haitians can obviosly use curry in their cooking and make an assortment of curry dishes. However, this doesn't mean that curry was a spice widely used in cooking all throughout Haitian history. Curry based dishes (or dishes consisiting of curry) can't be traced back 100 years ago in Haiti unlike most popular Haitian dishes. Us, as Haitians, have our individual personal touch on dishes but the base, core ingrediants have stood the test of time.

Hey Jason, my advice to you is to spend more time exhibiting the culture and food of the particular country in the video and less time with making comparisons to it with othe countries.
