Because it’s an island, Trinidad is a great place to enjoy succulent, mouthwatering seafood. Come with me as I head 20 minutes north of the capital to get my first taste of Trinidadian seafood in Trinidad and Tobago!
Joining me on this adventure in Santa Cruz was my friend Chef Jason Peru. It’s actually Jason’s hometown, so he’s passionate about the area and knows it well.
    ⚽️BOL: / bol.football
    👕 DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH: teespring.com/...
Our first adventure was having lobster roti and turkey roti at The Roti Cafe. It’s a small takeaway shop with over 15 rotis on the menu.
The lobster roti was like a huge, thick burrito. I loved the golden color, which was from the turmeric in the dough.
The lobster curry and dal inside were light, buttery, and flavorful, and the roti itself was exceptional. I could see why everyone comes here to try it. The tender lobster was succulent and juicy.
Jason’s turkey roti was so fresh and tasty. The gravy and potatoes were so good, and the meat straight off the bone blew my mind. The combination of chana, gravy, and potatoes blew my mind.
Then, we had an Angostura Chill, which is a lemon lime soda with bitters. It was perfect for the hot weather, and so refreshing!
But the food is so good and comforting, it makes you want to fall asleep! The best thing is, it’s super affordable!
Next, we headed up Maracas Beach on the northern coast of Trinidad The drive reminded me of the El Yunque Rainforest of Puerto Rico.
We stopped at a natural spring near a sculpture. It’s a beautiful area and the water is cool and fresh, and feels really pure!
Then, we came across a guy selling lots of goods, including nuts, dried fruits, oils, incense, and more. He let em try some of the oil and gave me a bottle of nuts as a gift. He was super nice!
Finally, we reached the lookout point, where there were vendors selling snacks including sweets, preserved fruits, and chow, as well as handmade crafts and jewelry. They even had packaged gulab jamun, barfi, and sugar cake.
I tried the sugar cake, which was hard and full of pure coconut. It was amazing and super sweet as well.
The gulab jamun was a little different from the Indian version. It was coated in sugar instead of swimming in sugar syrup. It was flaky and sweet, like the ultimate donut!
Then, beyond the vendors is the lookout point overlooking the beach. A lot of the crafts were made from calabash shells. Three gifts for my daughters and niece cost me 195 TTD, or about $29 USD.
Next, we drove 5 minutes to Patsy’s Bake and Shark on Maracas Beach to have some bake and shark! This area really reminded me of Puerto Rico with its jungle and mountains.
We saw their fried shrimp with fries, which cost 60 TTD, or about $10 USD. In the back, we watched the cook fry us a puri-like flatbread and fry up some hammerhead shark. They put a couple of filets in a sandwich!
You can dress it with various vegetables and condiments, including coleslaw, lettuce, pineapple, red onion, cucumber, and more. We added slaw, pineapple, tomatoes, purple onion, garlic sauce, pepper sauce, chadon beni, tamarind chutney, and cucumbers.
The bake and shark sandwich was massive. The refreshing vegetables and pineapple were amazing, and the shark was meaty, tender, and crispy. It also had some heat to it! The bread was also so fluffy! It might be the best fish sandwich I’ve ever had.
Then, we got a snow cone from the guys at North Koast Snow Cone outside. I got cotton candy and guava flavors for 15 TTD/roughly $2.50 USD. It was a nice rainbow slushie!
Then, we walked to Maracas Beach, the most popular beach in the country! It’s beautiful!

For the folks who keep saying it's still Indian food and it's "influence" from India, know your history. During the slave trade days the British brought over Indian indentured laborers to T&T to work on the sugar cane plantations and with it they brought over their religion, customs, culture and cuisine. To say it's not Trinidad food it's still Indian is oxymoronic. And btw you see that bake and shark and maracas beach... It's not "influenced" by India or any other country. THAT'S 100% TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO 🇹🇹 !

In india we love manchurian and chilli potato and we call it indo-Chinese (though they're 100% originated in india)

    • @ZariDV
      @ZariDV 2 года назад +20

@@hnhnhn797 If you go to a country and ask to try their local cuisine, you'll be eating the food that the locals primarily eat in the way they prepare it culturally. If it's a country that is almost entirely populated by the descendants of slaves and indentured labourers then obviously the food is going to have the pure origin from where the ancestors were stolen from AND it's also going to be considered local to that country. That's how ex-slave states work. What other culture can slaves and indentured workers claim other than the one they had before being taken? Trying to whine about it originating from India or Africa is remedial. Where else would the local food be from? From the slave masters' culture?

I'm not into Chinese really because of the oils and MSG which I normally feel the difference on the stomach but some vegans/vegetarians will give it a try sometimes.

My best bud lives in Toronto. He was born in Trinidad. We did college together in the late 70's. I live in Calgary, Alberta. He got me into Tobago and Trinidad (2 Carnivals) and I've never looked back. I go as much as I can. I will be there on March 7 for 3 weeks and going solo. It's a bit of a trek from the Rockies in Alberta, Canada to Tobago.

I'm so very please that you Incorporated the total nationality of Trinidad and Tobago cooking the last time it was only the Indian food and I commented on it that you should try with more of the Creole local vicious local dishes. I don't think that float came from the Indian cuisine. Bring up as a child only black people on the island made floats and my mother taught us how to make float and roast bake so, so actually it must have derived from the making of bake it could have been it could have been from other nation that inhabited Trinidad and Tobago many years ago so I am happy I'm so happy to see that you incorporating a lot of other cooking techniques in Trinidad and Tobago and I'm very happy to see that the Indian cuisine has has gone another level oh boy that Lobster Roti is delicious I had the opportunity of tasting the texture of that roti in Brooklyn and a road to the shop in Brooklyn thank you so much for sharing that good news next time you should taste Trinidad and Tobago cuckoo and fish also cook and shark and different types of meat the flavor. Have you tried the Trinidad cuckoo with different flavors of meat and callaloo. I would like to see your sampling the Trinidad and Tobago style of cuckoo with callaloo and various types of meats especially cuckoo and shock.

Here's a pro tip- leave the Roti in the diaper and only unwrap enough to take a few bites. therefore you don't get this sloppy mess and it stays together. Also FYI That Roti shop runs out by lunch time, it really is the best shop. Try some pepper sauce it will put some hair on your chest!!! One of my cousins started Richards Bake N Shark, just so you know it's actually catfish not shark 😉😉
