Shark fins are certainly still quite common at high-end banquets. Those rich people don't care about the environment. It's not about making the soup sticky, the shark fins themselves have a nice crunchy texture. The stickiness actually comes from pork skin and other stuff. Also it's a status symbol so the very idea that it's an expensive ingredient make people want it.
@@Joenzinator I'm talking about the top 5% rich people, not the ~20% upper middle class. As for poor people, they can't afford shark fin and $101 buffet anyway so their opinion doesn't matter. I’ve been to Taiwan several times, been to 101, but stupidly never heard of this buffet until now. I have to go back just for it. It looks amazing!!! Thank you for opening my eyes and love to Taiwanese people 🇹🇼
For reference, A Joy dinner costs $120, tax already included but there will a 10% service charge that's common in higher end Taiwanese restaurants so it's around $132 per adult. Top Las Vegas seafood dinner buffets (Wynn & Bacchanal) cost between $75 to $85, add tax (8.38%) and tip (let's just say 15%), that's just about $94 to $106 per adult. I'll admit it's been years since I've had buffets in Las Vegas, I've had Bacchanal prior to Covid twice, I was not impressed both times. I've had Wynn once and honestly I can't even remember what it was like anymore, it was just not memorable. Aside from the fact I just can't stuff that much food anymore, for the price I'd rather spend the same amount for better quality food than what's being offered in Vegas buffets. My impression of Las Vegas buffets is plenty of choices but little or none done well except maybe desserts. Taiwanese love their buffets, there are many price range and types of food to choose from, the most special must be the all vegetarian buffet, must try if ever in Taiwan, it will change your perception of what vegetarian food can be like forever. Most high end buffets in Taiwan will cost about $70 for adult and there are many options around $50 or less, lunch/afternoon/dinner/weekday/weekend/holiday can all have different price. Most buffets also sell discounted meal tickets online similar to Groupon, having locals to help to buy these at discounted price can mean additional savings. Taiwan is a great place for foodies, maybe it's best known for night markets but that's definitely not where you will find the best foods, see one night market and you've basically seen them all.
Sonny missed out on some of the best pasta I've had in my life at that buffet. They had a waygu brisket in a rich tomato sauce with cheese ravioli off to the side of the meat section and I would go to a restaurant just for that dish alone!

Food in Taiwan is generally affordable. A buffet like the second one would easily set you back by $150 in Singapore, including taxes. Probably even more on the weekends.
A buffet where you can get lobster, crab, wagu, high end sushi, and more. I honestly thought he was going to say $1000 not $100. $100 seems like a deal to me. Giant scallops too? Abalony?
Looking at how many people are walking around behind you in that expensive 101 buffet place, only one thought crossed my mind -- So many rich people!! 🤣🤣
Taiwan is incredible, they don't shit or spit in the street, they don't imprison people for their religious or political beliefs and they don't fry your food in petrol
To be fair, plenty of betel nut juice gets spit in the side streets of Taiwan. It was fun learning about what all the red splotches were when I lived there.
Oh man, these both look fantastic. I'm also from Minnesota, Sonny, and while you probably weren't here when they were around, there was a beautiful midranged hot pot store in the Har Mar Mall area that was the first time I got to see you order and get to cook it all at the table yourself! I absolutely LOVED it, especially since a whole pot practically fed me for a day. Sadly COVID ran them out, since so much of it was the communal and dine-in experience. I really miss them. The owner lady was so nice and I was there so often she used to sit with me sometimes and tell me about her family and her store and all sorts of stuff. It was SO much fun! So I absolutely LOVE the idea of that cheap hotpot place! To go in, kind of knowing what you want already, I bet you can get your selections picked up super quick. I've always LOVED the lamb, shrimp, cabbage, tofu, those enoki mushrooms...really I love a ton of the veggies and meats, but especially thanks to this show, I am absolutely raring to try things like bloodcakes. I've already grown more fond of liver, heart, gizzard, and eaten a whole roasted small quail thanks to here! The options here look fun. Just in case you do see this, I was curious if they allowed you to just pay for another "visit" if you ran your time out, or if you had to leave. But for the BIG BUFFET!? Holy SHIT! Like yes this would take some time to save up for, but this would ABSOLUTELY be birthday lunch/ celebration lunch material. The absolutely INSANE amount of different options was just mind-blowing and the sheer quality of not just the food, but the service, and presentation was absolutely amazing. Sadly I'll probably never make it to Taiwan XD, but if I somehow find myself there, I know exactly what I'm going to try!
Compare to some of stuff you ate in Africa, stinky tofu is a piece of cake. However, I have never tried sticky tofu. I want to try this place next time I go to Taiwan. Taipei 101's restaurant also looks very good.
Throughout the history of the show, this is the third time Sonny has eaten fresh cucumber and felt good about it, although this time he tastes no cucumber in the mouthful of ingredients.
That second buffet was absolutely bonkers awesome exceptional! 😮. Man alive I wish you could access something like that in the UK. Absolutely epic, so decadent, interesting, fresh, and so well prepared and presented. Totally blown away.

Food in Taiwan is generally affordable. A buffet like the second one would easily set you back by $150 in Singapore, including taxes. Probably even more on the weekends.
I m going to come to Taiwan when I get a job… that 101 dollar buffet is the real deal. 👌🏻
Thanks for sharing this video 👍❤️🇺🇸
A buffet where you can get lobster, crab, wagu, high end sushi, and more. I honestly thought he was going to say $1000 not $100. $100 seems like a deal to me. Giant scallops too? Abalony?
Exactly!
Sonny you’ve done it again, very entertaining, informative video, never fail to deliver!!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
When you popped that scallop I said “bro” the exact same time you did 🤣
That much for just $100 ? Get out of here! That amazing.
$101 for all of that? that's dirt cheap
16:42 the way he stop sonny, coz he thought he'll touch it haha
$101 is expensive but its pretty cheap when you compare to omakase where you get 10 bites of foods for like $200+.
For $101, its 101% worth it
Dame right 😂
Looking at how many people are walking around behind you in that expensive 101 buffet place, only one thought crossed my mind -- So many rich people!! 🤣🤣
Oh damn, now I want to go there, too
16:41 made me laugh when the chef was about to snatch away your hand 😂
Taiwan is incredible, they don't shit or spit in the street, they don't imprison people for their religious or political beliefs and they don't fry your food in petrol
I don't think any country imprison people for different belief, unless if you are in North Korea
If all Taiwanese think like this, Ill start to believe that they're the real eviI
Taiwan nationalist really have to cope hard
To be fair, plenty of betel nut juice gets spit in the side streets of Taiwan. It was fun learning about what all the red splotches were when I lived there.
China love to brainwash their people
That buffet looks so amazing!!
The ASS first got me 🤣🤣
wrr
You tripping them veggies looked fire 🔥
Wow, another superb video...
Taipei 101's restaurant also looks very good.
at about 10:38 , you said “am i going to try any of these vegetables? absolutely not” 😂
Throughout the history of the show, this is the third time Sonny has eaten fresh cucumber and felt good about it, although this time he tastes no cucumber in the mouthful of ingredients.
Thank you for the wonderful video of Taiwan's poor buffet vs rich buffet 👍
That second buffet was absolutely bonkers awesome exceptional! 😮. Man alive I wish you could access something like that in the UK. Absolutely epic, so decadent, interesting, fresh, and so well prepared and presented. Totally blown away.
Great vid! Bet that beef tongue really speaks to you…yum!
More people who do the job and do it with passion what a swell lad!
He couldn’t wait to show you his duck station!!
Such a fabulous video sonny!
Considering the price of King Crab alone is over $100, that's a deal for a $101 buffet.
I would guess about 6 of those big fat king crab pieces is worth around $100
“Wife coughs” 😂
😂😂
16:44 almost caught by police 😂
Bro is like* watch out don’t f touch those things with bare hands * 😂😂
I’m dead 😂🦍
I saw that too😂😂
The hand at 16:41 is Can't waiting for the food😂
