The 270-degree parallel twin is the ideal bike engine IMO, the characteristics & sound of a V-twin with the compactness of a parallel twin. I do miss my TRX 850 that I had 10 years ago ...but it was doing my back in lol.
and im wondering what if just the front 2 piston assembly's are installed by there selfs and nothing else and ran? ( would it tare it self part? or what's the biggest stroker crankshaft you can use or piston wights ? ect. would you need a special cam or dizzy or fuel system ? ) as im curiose enough to tryout on my mopar hemi/440 stroker v8 as im looking 👀 to test different camshaft timing's and rod and pistons and running setup like computer controlled spark and fuels or boost ect. with out costing a fortune 🔮 and or giving me time to buy and assemble the rest of the parts to make back into a v8 ( and still letting me drive it in the meantime without making 1k hp more than likely as i don't know the max it can take 🤷♂️ ) without permeantly making it a 108x114mm~ Harley 90*v twin with 6 dead holes
I've been a big fan of the sound of a throaty V-8 for all of my life. The first time I heard an R1 with a cross-plane crank I was blown away and they quickly became my new favorite sounding engine.
Exhaust system was the most open throated. The engine is also most most performance oriented for its displacement. The only thing differentiating a Ducati type L-twin engine from Yamaha's MT-07 is the throw direction of one cylinder. They have identical firing intervals otherwise. There are changes in engine balance characteristics and the fact L-twins don't need counterbalance shafts to make them smooth, but the parallel design has a lot of pros as well as it's one head and one cam chain system, less weird throttle and exhaust and cooling plumbing.
It is simple and cheap to put a full pipe on the mt07, many of the other bikes here were restricted or just had a slip on. I have a full Akrapovic on my Africa Twin and have ridden with the pipe and just the slip on. Due to the catalytic converter, the sound is different. FWIW, I went with just the slip on, it's loud enough and not annoying for extended periods.
Nice. I have already driven a few of them: the new Africa Twin, the mighty TRX an the Super Ténéré 1200 (not mentioned here). Those 270°s are quite nice to drive but the Super T was by far the best of them...
The 270 degree crank of a twin shouldn't be called a cross plane since there is no cross. Only a 4 cylinder engine's crank, like in Yamaha's R1, shows a cross when you look at it from the side. Most people call the twin a 270 degree twin because it has something like an "L" crank. Two "L" can make a cross. Same with any triple with a 120 degree crank - no cross!
"The MT-07 may be the Subaru BRZ of the motorcycle world..." Except it has torque. Seriously, it's time someone take the parallel twin (270° firing interval) and make a KTM 1290 competitor. Shouldn't be that hard. Just raise compression to 13:1, make it oversquare by a good amount, at least 1300cc, big valves, cam timing overlap, make it light weight. It could be rad. How come most of these parallel engine configurations are found in bikes that just chug along for the most part? If Ducati can maximize the L-twin configuration with their 270° firing interval, then someone in Japan could maximize the parallel configuration with 270° firing interval. Why not? It's a less heavy engine than an L-twin, much less expensive to manufacture, is a more compact package.
The Super Ten engine is a slug. Performance on that thing is quite low when you look at the numbers. The width of a 1300 parallel twin wouldn't be drastically wider than a Vtwin. Even a 1300 triple would be more narrow than today's ridiculously over-square 1000cc superbike engines.
That's true, but with a heavy reworking. They'll never do it. Just like the FJR1300.....big engine, not that much power when compared to Kawasaki C14 with only 50cc more. Seems like Japanese manufacturers are always leaning on the conservative side of everything. Gotta go to the European bikes to get stupid power in segments other than race track machines. Bore to stroke on the SuperTen: 98.0mm x 79.5mm. That's 1.233. Even though not severely small bored in relation to stroke, the 1290 KTM engine is 1.521, far more oversquare and eager to rev/make HP (not to mention 13.2:1 compression). To get any real HP they'd have to enlarge throttle bodies, valves, make radical cams, cam timing overlap, raise the compression at least one and a half points, raise redline to 11K or so, and rework the air box. Not likely any of these things will happen on the SuperTen.
Wait... crossplane technically means you have 90-degree angle between crank throws, which means at least 4 pistons (90-degrees x 4 = 360 degrees full crank rotation). Basically the crankshaft then comprises 2 different angles or planes crossing each other at a right angle, hence the name crossplane. How on earth then do you get crossplaning with only 2 cylinders? Or is the term used loosely to refer to any crankshaft that isn't flat planed?
I mean, the 270º crank does have a 90º angle between crank throws. I would say that other angles would still qualify as "crossplane" as long as an even firing order is being eschewed, ie the R1 and 900 Nuda count as crossplane, but a standard 3-cylinder does not despite not having a "flat crank".
I use a BMW K75 as a daily commuter. Try to integrate the motorcycle into your everyday life. That makes ist much cheaper in the long run and you can have fun every day, not just at weekends...
EICMA 2020....bikes to add to the crossplane I-2: BMW F900XR, F900R, KTM Duke 890R, Triumph Thruxton RS, Thruxton TFC, Africa Twin 1100. Just found out the Aprilia RS 660 coming will also be 270°.

I have a 1400 intruder. It looks like a 45 degree V-twin, but it has a dirty secret - the crank is split 45 degrees. So it sounds like either a 90 degree V-twin or a 270 degree parallel twin.
Just started saving up for an MT-07. Haven't ridden one yet, no dealerships around me allow test rides. Anyone have any recommendations on other bikes to check out.
I personally would also be wanting to get the MT-07. What type of bikes and power figures are you looking for? Triumph might have interesting bikes, but they cost a bit more

You forgot the Suzuki GS500E. My neighbour had one in mint condition, he killed himself after tboning a car at 170 kp/h. I remember it always sounded like a thunder when he started it up.
A "plane" is a geometric term use in engineering. It simply symbolizes the fact that the crankpin and the center of the crankshaft exist on a hypothetical "plane" in space. To say "cross-plane" is to imply that the relationship between more than one cylinder is crossed. Both crankpins do not exist on the same plane in space. They are crossed to each other (usually 90°, but not necessarily so because Yamaha's triple is also called a cross-plane engine with 120° between the crankpin relationships).
@@exothermal.sprocket Oh I see, so basically any engine with unparallel number of cylinders can be called a cross-plane? Like the 5 cylinder for example? 144 degrees
If a pair or more of cylinder crank pins are in the same plane relative to each other, that's "flat plane". If those planes are rotated from one another, it's "cross plane" technically. People will argue that cross-plane configurations are only 90° (perpendicular) to each other but by raw definition that's not necessary.

The width would make the bike too wide to be a KTM1190 competitor. Unless they decreased displacement a good amount
