Anybody talking mess about race here should remember; a performer doesn’t pick their audience, the audience picks the performer. And I see PLENTY of brothers and sisters bumping this to this day.
This song appeals to black audiences even more than it does white audiences. It's not about "talking mess about race", I consider it a positive when a white artist surprises black people. It breaks stereotypes just like Darius Rucker does in country music.

ABC reported that What You Won't Do for Love was sampled by over 100 artists! Mr. Caldwell got his professional break playing guitar in Little Richard's band in the early 70's went solo and wrote songs for Roberta Flack and Neil Diamond. He passed in his wife's arms...how sweet. Rest in Peace blue-eyed R&B maestro.
I agree with you Nic, you are so right! To those who don't get it, they never will because they don't want to! Don't worry about them or waste your time trying to guide them to the light. They grow better in the dark. :)
I honestly just found out a few days ago that he was white. It knocked my socks off. What a wonderful soulful voice he had. I can tell you this, there will not be another Bobby Caldwell. 🙏🏽❤💙
OMG I was just going to say that, however I am not racist! Ok! Lol, I didn't know he looked like one of the beach boys! It wouldn't matter I love this artist❤
@@Laura-j4l It does not make you a racist to think that someone is of a certain colour based on their voice. You will find many videos and comments by black people who assumed the same. The problem nowadays is people are too frightened to make a comment where it involves a race that isn’t theirs for fear of being labelled racist!
Actually we have a history of moving & smiling with singers/musicians that are not black. Let me mention a few: The Righteous Brothers, The Doobie Brothers, Michael McDonald, Hall & Oates, Tina Marie, Lisa Stansfield, Ambrosia (Biggest Part of Me), Average White Band (AWB), Boz Skaggs, Player (Baby Come Back), Michael Bolten... the list goes on and on. You see in the end, it really is about the music - I promise!
Thank u! Usher RUclips the ones I didn't know and come to find out I did know the song the whole time I just forgotten about them and didn't know who sung them and the title of them
You are right - his singing is actually better - I didn't expect that! His voice has better resonance and tone now. It is less flexible than a young singer's voice, but he has compensated with much more skill and nuance. Above all, his sense of Soul has deepened till it fills the stage and inspires the audience.

Ebony, it doesn't matter whether a great singer is black or white, it IS the music. Listen for the throat tone and you'll know the difference... but in the end, it is all GREAT music...
His singing is so wildly consistent through all the way to his unfortunate passing. If you listen to how he blasts through that falsetto run which is him adding a part and playing with the song, it's incredible. Like. Such a stunning talent that had amazing soul. I hope it's at rest now.
This song will NEVER get old. I remember liking this when I heard it as a kid & I only appreciate it even more now. What a great song - the arrangements (nothing like the sound of a good band), the lyrics, the voice - it really is a masterpiece. RIP Bobby Caldwell.
Sweet baby black Jesus! The first white singer to make me feel like he understood true black smoothness. Damn, this man need an honorary doctorate from the brotherhood! Rest in Love Bobby.

Singer and songwriter Bobby Caldwell, the man behind the 1978 platinum hit "What You Won't Do For Love," has died on March 15, 2023 at age 71, his wife Mary confirmed to CBS News on Wednesday. He was a world class songwriter who also happened to possess the kind of mellifluous voice that made him soul music royalty. Today we say a sad goodbye to legendary singer and songwriter Bobby Caldwell, a four decade star best known for his now-iconic hit "What You Won't Do For Love."
Thank you Bobby Caldwell for leaving your beautiful musical gift to the world to forever appreciate . And thanks for posting this video, his intro was AMAZING! Growing up in Miami, Bobby was cultivated in African, Latin, Reggae music and we can hear it in his incredible voice! #RIP

@Michael Davenport I'm a white guy but I think black people have much more style almost always lol
OK! By the intro, I was like DAYUMN! This DUDE got Soul!

Daryl Hall's another one. Check out his rendition of "Me and Mrs. Jones".
Is anyone going to give props to the young lady on the saxophone!!!!!!!

The whole band is on point! ❤
Fantastic…
This about Bobby fyi. Why did she recently die?
@jackiepowell7513 Yes I know this was about Caldwell but I want to give some respect to that young lady and her obvious talent.

Bobby Caldwell proves what I’ve known all my life....soul has no color lines or boundaries. Sing it Bobby!!

Music doesn't care what colour you are.
Charlotte, I agree with you whole heartedly. As far as I'm concerned - soul has no color.
I, too, go along with your list - they've got it.
Charlotte Mwagbe and Jon B
Charlotte Mwagbe why does race even have to be brought in to it? Fucking pathetic
