Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad

Since there seems to be so much confusion on the matter: Derek Trucks is the nephew of Butch Trucks. Butch is a founding member of the Allman Brothers and Derek has played in the Allman Brothers since 1999 (When he was 19).
Elijah Blue is Greg Allman's son and is NOT in this video. You can find more info on him here: en.wikipedia.or...
The most likely reason this was not included on the official DVD is that Clapton's guitar feed drops from the dueling guitar section with Derek in the latter half of the song. There are other versions on youtube that captured the live stream and have a different mix of the two guitarists.
Think this is it:
• Eric Clapton & Derek T...
Derek Trucks is phenomenal in every sense. He just seems to find a home within the song and you find yourself at times only hearing his guitar. He seems to find every sweet spot on that guitar.
He makes the guitar sing like a human voice. It's truly mind blowing the sounds he creates.
i love how eric, playing a song he did when he masqueraded as derek, is having a man who is the figurative reincarnation of the other guitarist who played on the track and who is named derek take the lead on this. just poetic.
Antony Chirovsky Very well put, can’t make this stuff up!! Long live Skydog and may Derek, warren, Trey, and the whoever else you want to add to the list carry the torch for many years to come and keep this beautiful music going forever!
@@Tuker1954 i add charlie starr to the list
Skydog lives on! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I don't know if you are aware of this, but he also has a brother named Duane. He plays drums in Widespread Panic.S, the two brothers are Derek and Duane -- and that's no coincidence. I met Derek and his father when Derek was thirteen and his dad said Derek used to fall asleep almost every night listening to either Filmore East or Layla...
I watch this video a lot. It’s beautiful, and then I go listen to the original album version, cause there ain’t no replacing Brother Duane
That moment when clapton comes to stand next to you while playing his song, you know you’ve arrived 😂 great performance!
Derek's tone is just impeccable.
Clapton has nothing to prove he just smiles when great guitar players hit the notes
6 years later and that's STILL the FACT 👌✌️
When Clapton lets you take the lead, you know you're doing something right.
Indeed!
Absolutely true. But Derek is playing the Duane Allman part from the Layla album, and Clapton is badly undermixed in this version of the video. There is another that is much better, but undermixes Tim Palmer! This is a phenomenal, phenomenal version of this great, great song, but anyone - anyone - who sees this as the treasure it is must listen to the original version on Layla. Duane Allman plays most of the lead throughout the song and it is an absolute masterpiece. No wonder Clapton said that he felt that Duane was like his brother. Then watch this (or the other version) again: so much of Duane’s genius channeled into this one. You can hear Duane’s influence in Clapton’s playing on this song. So, as Antonovich74 said 13 years ago, there is poetic wholeness to this that is … there is no adjective that captures it.
@@samuelsessions2817Beatifully said and right on
That is simply perfection...Derek Trucks is the best slide player around for me. Chillingly brilliant.
Not only with his blues and magical abilities, Mr Claptons the man and always will be. Thank you Eric.
Slide or not my fave guitarist, dude inflects so much emotion and purpose into every note he plays
What are the odds? That E.C. would someday play with a kid named after the album? Thanks to Duane Allman. Who influenced us all..R.I.P.🍑🍄
Nobody needs to hear that sloppy slide anymore.
hes untouchable on slide, absolutely agree.Hes actually one of my top ever to be frank
derek trucks is simply THE best guitarist of his generation. listen to his whole catalog..the breadth of influences is incredible and he does it with so much feeling.
I agree Derek is amazing esp on slide but have you forgotten about Mr. Bonamassa? Check out Joe's acoustic guitar DVD in Europe! It frikan blew me away what he's actually capable of on acoustic, and, well, electric blues is his fort'e and easily the best blues/rock guitarist in his generation I think anyways, but Derek and Joe in the same band would ...can't even find a proper or good enough word to use! Thier both so frikan fast it's just too much and I've been playin and watchin for many decades! Derek is like the offspring of Duane Allman on slide, only better! (Yeah! That'll piss a few blues afficianado's off but?) Same exact thing w/ Joe and Clapton but I won't go so far as to say he's better than Clapton! Considering the 50+ yrs Eric's been on top, and as gifted as he was at 20 yrs old not to mention his genuine humility how could anyone say someone in his 20's or 30's was BETTER than Clapton? A whole different angle is all but I saw Eric at Stanford when he was 30 in 1975 and he just blazed!!!!!!!! Back then he was the best around! Especially blues! Still is in my world! Enjoy yur music 301!
Johnny Guit Bonamassa is an amazing technical guitarist but he comes nowhere near Derek Trucks for feeling.
Derek Trucks, in my opinion, is the best blues guitarist out there at the moment.
His slide playing is spot on and the good thing is, he never tries to show off or beat the player before him; he just does his thing.
There's a video on here somewhere with him playing with Bonamassa and you can see Bonamassa playing fast and flash trying to one up Derek.
didn't work though, derek owned the stage.
Buddyboy, I agree with everything you said! As you said Bonamassa is a great guitarist but I think Derek IS better for my kind of music, you have to look at where Joe's music comes from, and where Dereks music comes from , totally different parts of the country. Live Long & Rock on...
when derek first came out with the allman brothers, i wasnt impressed, am a huge warren haynes fan, but as the years went by derek has gotten soooo good, i think better than warren, and he only seems to get better, amazing...
Both Bonamassa and Warren Haynes are great guitarist but neither is in Dereks level
Why does this song have to be so beautiful?
Because the fist half is so powerfull & the last bit has that Great amaj7 to dmaj7 chord change opening great improvisation skills.Shame Eric's guitar is low, something wrong there.
kerry mcmanus I believe it is done on purpose. The record has EC's guitar a little lower than Duane's and I saw them perform this at last year's Crossroads - it was set up the exact same way.
Because Eric really meant it when he wrote that. Every single word.
Best comment ever.
Well, it just is, and anyone with a soul can feel it! On a technical note, I really believe it is the major 7th chords that give it a sad yet pleasing feel. Dmaj7 and Amaj7 when it goes to the chorus is a beautiful segue. Well, plus the awesome slapping drums and the groove of the bassline. It is a well blended recipe.
4am. Insomnia strikes. And then you remember youtube, stick the headphones on and have a blast of Eric, Derek and Doyle. So hat's off to the frigging insomnia. :-)
bass lines are incredible
Derek is the SRV of Gibson guitars. He pours his entire soul into his playing...So enjoyable to listen to
awesome how Derek feels the song.
Right?! It's absolutely amazing. I love Derek Trucks. He's Duane reincarnated, but in my opinion, better.
And he ain't been sitting on a cloud. He's been practicing!
Eric & Derek = Great !
And Steve Jordan killing it on the drums!!! Man I wish I was there...
Derek is flawless! He almost made me cry with this solo
Sort of an old timer, 50 something here, I've wondered in the past if the great guitar gods were long gone until I hear Derek Trucks
What a legends… that Derek’s smile at the end.
Always amazed at how good Derek is w/o the slide.
The interplay between him and Eric is just stunning.
The slide is annoying. He doesn't need it.
@@Marshall_Stacks LMAO....riiight.
one of the best hammond solos I've heard! amazing.
Literally how i discovered DEREK TRUCKS (backup/soloist guitarist). He is by far one of the most creative, mind blowing bad ass blues guitar players still in existence today. Clapton aside. So much love to this compilation of artists.
Derek is a world music guitarist lol
Where were you while he was with the Allman Brothers? Watching him play alongside Warren Haynes and Gregg Allman is one of life's greatest joys!
Clapton's face at 5:30.......priceless!!
There’s nothing left to be said. Derek Trucks is just brilliant.
This shows just how talented Derek is with or without his slide, Live Long & Rock On....
Wow Derek Trucks fucking kills it here
HOLY SHI* - that was friggen brilliant.................. Derek Trucks - WOW
Derek trucks is the best guitar player in the world in my opinion. So much feeling and originality!!!
I listen to this song every day and then some guitar Legends
I love how Eric stops every now and then and just smiles at Derek's playing. I've heard the stories that he used to be an egotistical douche, but certainly nowadays, he is humble and generous and I love him for it. This jam should very well go down as one of the best in history. Love it!
Playing with Derek is probably very similar to playing with Duane. Clapton and Duane had such an amazing chemistry. They did this again at Crossroads 2013. Probably the best musical experience of my life.
Everything he plays is awesome and dying to hear more from this young man
Wanna feel old?
Derek is 41 now.
He's a true prodigy turned journeyman. He's been fantastic since he was old enough to vote.
He just keeps improving and growing. Incredible musician.
I saw the tedeschi trucks band live @ hard rock live in Orlando Florida January 28-2023 and I was blown away
This is the most greatest guitar solo I ever heard.
The outro is so beautiful.. especially the last notes played by Derek.. breathtaking!
Slowhand & crazy fingers, what a combination, I agree def.among the top if not " THE BEST" guitarist of this generation
Derek's guitar always stands out. He is my favorite with or without a slide.
One of my favorite Eric's songs, by far, up there with the best of the best.
His solos on this song from the D&Ds "In Concert" album are boggling. If you haven't listened to it you are in for a treat, brother. And Let It Rain from same album is even more amazing. All the people who say Clapton was overrated haven't heard these songs.
Amen @@WhizzingFish12
This is definitely one of the best solos by Derek. Rock on New God!
This music never gets old
amazes me how great they all play together, no flaws, just perfection.
Drummer excelllent as well. I could listen to this time and time again.
4 great guitarists and a keyboard great too. Very special.
It doesn't get much better than that!
So close to being my favorite version right next to Derek and the dominos live at the Fillmore. So good
You can hear the Allman Brothers influence in his semi-solo. Wonderful.
What always gets me about this video is how you can see every single member of the band in nirvana after that last chorus and Derek takes over. Brilliant
Doyle Bramhall is a really amazing musician! Just like Clapton and Derek, he is more than willing to play background for the pure enjoyment of the music and the artists he's playing with. Thank's Doyle!
Steve Jordan, Ian Thomas, & Willie Weeks groove is Huge. One Of Eric's Best ever bands.
Steve Jordan is always good. Check him with Neil Young on SNL playing Rockin in the Free World.
so true
I have seen Eric a bunch of times, including this tour, and Steve Jordan is SO much better, exponentially, than every other drummer I’ve seen with Eric. It’s literally like night vs day. Not sure why Eric isn’t more choosy about his drummers. Willie Weeks is amazing too. Would love to see this exact same band together at least one more time.
Agreed
Best guitar players are always a matter of opinion.I just like to listen to them all
grande eric sono 50 anni che ci regala le sue perle i suoi blues le sue jam sicuramente nella storia come uno dei più' grandi artisti e chitarristi di sempre clapton is god
UNBELIEVABLE! What else can you say.
Clapton getting the same feeling he had while playing with Duane.. His smile said it all.. Derek is amazing
Such a smooth and amazing tune. Eric is such a great player. Derek is also quite a guitarist. The whole band is just polished and wonderful.
First time I heard this I was gone with Derek.... His guitar playing in this song is ridiculous I said to myself where did this guy come from. Derek and Clapton in this song is the best I have ever heard. This possibly is the best song I have ever heard.
Your comment cracks me up!!!! HAHAHAH
I agree
Gives me chills to see Eric gravitate towards Duane, I mean Derek on this. Perfect.
That Hammond B-3 solo by Tim Carmon.....
kalpataru47 on time
Trucks is on stage because Clapton knows a future legend when he hears one. What an awesome version!
that look on clapton's face at 5:32 is priceless. looks like he realizes that blues music isn't going to die with all of this young talent coming up
I first met Derek when he was 9. God, that makes me feel old. It was Butch that introduced us. RIP, Butch.
Oh Derek how beautiful was that. And to realise that your uncle Butch was the band mate of the original guitarist who played on this the great Duane Allman.
And Derek playingDuane's SG!
You know you're in good hands when you have the likes of Doyle Bramhall playing rhythm guitar for you.
I think he calls out: "HALF, HALF" (tempo, to the drummer) and he gets it!
these back-up vocals are golden - I love this song
My god that's a beautiful piece of music
Derek is the annointed one without peer.
no one should knock this vid...music played is a space in time...everyone has their own idealic version of what they want to hear...that is is what our ears and mind desire...but each player here is playing for us..the audience..eric has played this countless times..i've seen it...but there is still a joy when the opening riff starts and he is still playing and with the other musicians he looks like he is happy..
When Eric just shakes his when Derek goes to slide, it tells you all you need to know
I do believe he's actually shaking his head because he yells "Half! Half!" to the drummer just before, and then shakes head when the drummer plays half. But yes, the head shake also perfectly fits Derek slide
@@davidorlowicz2447 was about to say the same
Heard this song as the news my grandfather passed away. Still think of him and that smile of his I miss everytime I hear Derek at 5:42.
this video makes me feel so happy to be alive...
6:20 completely broke my heart. Absolutely beautiful.
Love how Eric calls out F at the end, classic.
Eric Clapton just says "thank you very much" at the end of the song.
flash back! to the 70's when we had such great music!
Derek trucks is simply one of the best guitar players ever ranks up there with all the greats
you do see musicianship like this anymore. Rock Royalty on stage here.
saw it all. arrived at 6am, mad rush to center stage. ended about 30 yards out jest left of center. so many flashbacks to one of greatest days in live music.has to been in top 5 festival events to date.
This is spectacular. Exhibit A for anyone who thinks Derek Trucks is just a slide player (though he's too low in the mix in this version). Eric & Derek have great chemistry.
At 5:28 He caught Clapton there... Derek is probably the only one capable of something like that...
and when u play a solo following eric and he just gives up, u know a legend is born
Very similar to the cut on "At his Best". Truly a showcase of music with soul and just the right amout of electric tech. Highlighting each discipline, its a joy to watch musicians play songs like this. Bravo!!🎉
Well that’s so much better than what saw before hey great song ❤️
All I can say is " I wish I'd been there!"
Me too.
Awesome!!You know youre the shit when EC plays rhythm at times for ya .Trucks is amazing.
Awesome song with Derek filling in Mightily for Duanne=D
Derek is the Prodigy, and it is highly recommended to hear him live to truly appreciate his greatness.Check out The Allmans Brothers playing this on their summer tour 2008,they really nail it with Warren on voclas!
Just love them all.
WONDERFUL
this is one of my favorites on you tube
Oh this is fabulous on so many levels!❤
Derek Trucks making my heart sing here.
Very Cool... Clapton standing behind, Trucks jamming
derrek has duanes soul im sure of it!!
If reincarnation is a thing then Derek is absolutely Duane Allman reincarnated. He looks kinda like him and he plays exactly like him. This is history being remade some 45 years latter encapsulating the impossible feat of hearing where Duane logically would have gone as a player and Clapton is once again being pushed by an equal and knows it amazing experience thank you for this.
Derek's soul is his own. He got himself to where he is playing wise. It's fantasy to think that some long dead guy came over and possessed him to play how he does. Is Duane an influence? sure. But he ain't the only one.
@@moreblack Could not agree more
5:05 is the best. Watch as the two craft this beautiful 30-second back-and-forth. Clapton's smile at the end of it illustrates just how impressed he is by Trucks. That was improvised by the two of them, and if God is impressed, then you should be too.
Yeah, and 5:06 and 5:07 and 5.08 and 5:09 and ...
Love those guys and their music... hope to see them live soon... Dereck is touring in Europe with Susan and Eric is about to play at the RAH in London (May)... but it could also be in the USA... John Mayer is another genius I'd love to meet...
"Don't dream your life but live your dreams" has always been my moto...
so true about Clapton letting Derek play...he stands behind and plays under....that's a true master
Absolutely amazing cant stop playing this track. Derek is amazing
So true I cant figure out why love hurts but it does 💔💔💔
never thought much of Clapton but Trucks is amazing
Eric always did best when pushed by another hotshot onstage. Love to hear Derek play without slide too, like he does here.
There are no words that do justice as to how wonderful this is
My favourite song... I like this solo of clapton.. i can hear it one houndred times a day and its still cool
Bloody hell what a heavenly piece to hear wow !!!
