Waves of full body chills starting at 6:20... Every. Damn. Time. I come back to and watch this every couple weeks. It is a spectacular arrangement... every one truly plays an important role. But Derek obviously steals the show... Captured within: the pureness of man and guitar. Mind, body, and soul. God and music. If you can not feel Derek's spirit listening to this, you may not be fully awakened to the fleeting beauty and explicit trueness resonating amongst life's buzz. It surrounds you even now. A performance like this simply helps you feel it. Slow down, plug in, and let go. 🙏🏻❤️🔥
I know there're other good guitarists out there (not as many as there used to be). But in my eyes Derek is the premier guitar player of the day, of this era.
He is known as a great slide player, which he is, but when he puts the slide down you realize just how terrific he is. This song is just one example. I played the Layla album so much when it came out that even a quarter taped to the tone arm wouldn't keep the needle from skipping.
An excellent rendition by the band and Derek! Definitely gave me chills. But can we just stop for a moment to appreciate how incredible Eric Clapton was. His guitar playing was truly off the charts not to mention a pretty damn good voice!
If anyone tells you there is a better guitarist than Derek on the planet - working in this genre - don't believe them. Great feel, flawless technique, and a beautiful tone as well. His slide playing is simply the icing on the cake. As exciting as Hendrix, as expressive as a young Peter Green - he really is a marvel.
Yes, his voice is quite an instrument, he can do so much, his lead vocals on Derek's band prior to TTB were outstanding... and he's a great songwriter.
I think Derek is playing his best in 2022! Dude has been rippin on stage and has played several unbelievable solos in the past year. My favorite is when he sat in with Dave Matthews Band, that’s one of the best solos you will ever see! The DMB just sat back and allowed him to shine, nobody else on stage dared to step in and play their own solo after Trucks killed it. They just let him keep playing all the way thru to the end. 🤯😳
To the stratosphere and beyond… Trucks guitar work is amazing. There are the old liner notes on a very old album talking about those that emulate. Then there are those that create and make it all their own. They have been blessed with amazing talent backed up with a creative force. Lucky me to live in this time.
Maybe they come like they do to me. I believe that I am intended to participate in the creative emotion that there really is no words for. Such depth of musicianship in that band.
I have that same sensation.. When Secretariat was winning the Belmont, Derek's solos in Midnight in Harlem.. I think the tears come because we are witnessing greatness, the pinnacle of performance.. So well done, TTB
There is no guitarist on the planet who does what Derek does. Plenty of gun guitarists out there, but what Derek does is totally unique. I’m biased, but I think they are the finest live band on the planet. They touch your soul and take you to another plane of sonic existence.
Jeez. If the hairs on the back of the neck aren’t up as that solo crescendos, go find yourself a mirror, place it over your mouth and breath! First introduction to Derek Trucks was in early 2007 when he toured in Clapton’s band with Doyle Bramhall II. Without the impetus to push himself, Slowhand tends to coast along in second gear. However, with the help of a then-27-year-old Trucks and an almost otherworldly Bramhall II, the band tore through six or seven tracks from LAOALS that night, showcasing Trucks' exceptional talent, while bringing out the best in Clapton.
Yeah. I've seen Clapton 8 times live, and the tour with those two was the best. (Second best was "From the Cradle" tour where he had Andy Fairweather Low)
This is more than just about tone and technique etc,...Derek is inside the story of the song. The music is pouring out. And just to note, he stays perfectly in time even when he switches and reaches into his (pocket?) and puts the slide on. And just listen to the first slide on the bass string...my lord, he is cutting through into the feel of this songs. Its like he's the only guitarist who can play the Layla album except of course EC. And it makes sense. Derek is part of that amazing blood line. Its amazing. I am in awe and can't wait to see them on Sunday.
First time I heard Tedeschi and trucks they play this song and I just was a fan ever since I seen when Derek trucks took over for Dickey Betts long time ago and blossom music center in Cleveland and I’ll take his came along way and he’s just incredible now and I’m so glad he’s stuck with it because he’s a great kid and a great talent and with Tadashi at aside I think they’re going forever well done
Probably the best guitarist playing today, as good as Knopfler or Guy or Clapton or Hendrix in their prime. I particularly love to hear him play opposite Tedeschi.
TTB is really turning out to be a type of pilgrimage for the faithful, the show must have a sense of feeling as if one is not only at a concert but alas is simultaneously in church. Love Susan and Derek they are just adorable. RIP Kofi we love you and see your light everywhere brother. Miss you man. ♥️
It’s hard to believe Derek is still improving. He’s becoming a well rounded guitarist, not just a slide player. I love it when he puts down the slide🎸☮️ Also appreciate whoever is posting this amazing band for us all to enjoy.
He has been a complete guitarist for over 20 years. I first saw him play in 2005 and went out and bought every album up to that time and since. It hasn't been just the slide. He is the John Coltrane of the guitar in fact listen to his takes on Coltrane and Miles Davis from his earlier albums.
I always felt this was the best song on the Album. Layla got all the radio play but this song just has “It”. I get goose bumps every time they go into the chorus, “Any day, I will see you smile”! Brings back so many memories. Oh - These guys kill it, too!
My favorite guitar player over the past 20 years and I think one of the, if the best around. I've seen him live with The Brothers twice, DTB twice and TTB.
Everything that Derek and Susan touch takes the work of geniuses to another level. I cherish the classic Layla album, but must say that this next generation has taken things to a higher plane.
Thank you! Besides what everbody else has said, this is an amazing tribute to Derek & the Dominoes and the original Allman Brothers Band, combined, all in one package -- on steroids! And this Mike Mattison's voice is simply mind-blowing...
Derek is more than a slide guitar player. He might be the best that is alive today. Taking this classic song to new places with that "Blue Sky" jam. Wow!
Oh my lord Derek gets better and better. That was beyond words you have to feel it. I have to see them. Fabulous band. Susan is best vocalisr on the planet. Cudos to the rest of yhe band. Great post.
That was such an awesome night. Thank you again for posting this. This song was my introduction to TTB when I saw the video of them at Clapton's Crossroads Festival. Been in love with them ever since. Still have Gilford NH, New Haven and hopefully Boston to go this year!
"Blues Guitarist of the Year" and made the cover of June 2022 Vintage Guitar Magazine! Congrats, Derek! Jacksonville is proud of our hometown rock heroes! Jesus saves! And what's wrong with a little "Blue Skies" mixed in there?
I WISH Jacksonville honored these folks! They don’t even sell out in town. I call it the, “No man is a hero in his own town” syndrome. (And Jesus may save some , but not me - don’t need saving.)
@@carycareycarrie4445 We ALL need saving CCC. And Jesus is the ONLY way. He’s the Way, The Truth and the Life. @@tombstoneslim7070 That "only way" part really sticks in my craw. No thanks. Fantastic solo at the 9 minute mark, after a minute, he's starting to quote the Allman Brothers and taking it really high... Awesome.
Love the Blue Sky quotes around 9:43. Man what a guitarist, what a band!

Derek Trucks is setting a new bar now in my opinion. I’ve seen him maybe 3 times in the last 20 years or so this is the best
