Virulence factors are specific features possessed by microbes, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, that enhance their ability to cause disease in their host organisms. These factors enable microbes to invade, colonize, evade the host's immune system, and cause damage to host tissues, resulting in the manifestation of various types of infections and diseases.
Virulence factors can include structural elements like capsules and pili, molecular mechanisms like toxin production, genetic manipulation, and other strategies that contribute to the microbe's success in causing harm and establishing an infection.
Capsules: Bacterial capsules are slimy outer layers made of complex sugars. They protect bacteria from being recognized and attacked by the host's immune system. Capsules make it difficult for immune cells to engulf and destroy bacteria, allowing them to survive and multiply within the host. Some examples are Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis.
Adhesins and Pili: Adhesins are proteins on the bacterial surface that enable bacteria to stick to host cells. Pili, also known as fimbriae, are hair-like appendages that help bacteria attach to surfaces, including host tissues. These structures promote bacterial colonization and prevent their clearance by host defenses. Some examples are Escherichia coli strains, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Helicobacter pylori, Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella enterica.
