The human immune system is the most complex biological system we know, after the human brain, and yet, most of us never learn how it works. Or what it is. Your immune System consists of hundreds of tiny and two large organs, it has its own transport network spread throughout your body. Every day it makes hundreds of billions of fresh cells.
It is not some sort of abstract entity. Your immune system is YOU. Your biology protecting you from the billions of microorganisms that want to consume you and from your own perverted cells that turn into cancer. It's so manifold that it is impossible to cover in one video, so we’ll make a series looking at different aspects of it.
Today, what happens when your body is invaded and your first lines of defenses are engaged in a fight for life and death?

Ohai! I’m Philipp, the founder and head writer of Kurzgesagt and author of IMMUNE! Let me say a few words about it: IMMUNE is older than Kurzgesagt and I began working on it about a decade ago in university. The idea was to explore a super important but also extremely misunderstood and complicated topic and “translate” it into a language everybody could understand. I’ve done my best to basically write a super long Kurzgesagt video but with less of the limitations of a ten minute video.
IMMUNE is a fascinating and fun journey through your own body, together we’ll be exploring mystery organs, murder universities, your enemies from viruses, bacteria and cancer (and how your immune system might have killed a cancer cell while you were reading the last few sentences) and the incredibly beautiful and amazing parts, cells and systems that keep you alive. After reading it you should not only gain a new appreciation for your own body but also experience disease differently. A flu or something more serious will not be this abstract thing but something you can sort of witness and imagine which mechanisms are active and which cells are doing what. At least personally, knowing how the immune system works always has given me great comfort when I felt unwell. Also 45 illustrated pages by the Kurzgesagt team make the book very pretty.
Preorders are incredibly important in the world of books so if you are considering getting it, it would mean a lot if you could do that. Because preorders determine if a publisher will try to get the book into bookstores, so a lot of the book’s success depends on it.
I’m incredibly grateful that so many of you have watched these videos in the last few years. And I hope you will give my first book a chance too. - Philipp

Great fun read, hoping there will some day be another book? Massive fan of the channel, keep educating people guys!
Start studying cellular clocks. Imo theyre the most interesting, albeit under-studied, part of human biology. Its also very applicable to the average person, considering the average person sleeps and is exposed to light in a rhythm. Its especially cool considering these clocks play a larger role in muscle rather than the brain which is the opposite of what you’d expect.
I got it to, it is so interesting!
The fact they can explain years of studying into a couple of 10 minute videos show how much they care and how hard they work. It's so well simplified!!!❤️
"The human immune system is the most complex biological system we know, after the human brain"
-The human brain
Lol true.
The human brain thinks it' the most complex biological system because it has been able to bring humanity to the top of the food chain while the immune system is needed only for when the body is under attack by foreign cells and otherwise doesn't have to do anything, but in fact it's only the third most complex. Ironically, the immune system thinks it's the most complex biological system for the exact same reason, it too is not the first, but only the second.

I am currently half way through the book, Easily the best written, most understandable and easily digestible non-fiction book I have ever read. I cannot describe how impressed I am that Phillip is able to communicate something so intricate to somebody who has limited knowledge in the subject so efficiently and enjoably. 1000/10

Yeah, I never felt more motivated to go watch those series than I do now. Thanks Kurgesagt!
Kurzgesagt is god to people who want to learn random things
I was looking for what it was I felt… you have hit it on the nose exactly!
@The Yangem Happens In majority of attacks of pathogen to the body. Macrophages prefer to reside in tissues while neutrophils reside in blood vessels. Neutrophils made upto more than 50% of all immune cells thats why neutrophils are more likely to face the pathogens first especially if pathogen has entered a blood vessel. If the pathogen is unlucky and has entered body through tissue then Macrophages become the first responders

Me: "ahh sh*t, here we go again"

He Was Talking About The Different Bacterias . From Aliens.
Yes, Even I Dont Understand But Its Still Fun To Watch It
Fun Fact: The macrophage invigorated by the helper T-cell is literally called an "Angry Macrophage"
lol
As usual, scientists are bad at naming things.

8 1 hour long confusing lectures -> one simple 10 min video, thank you !!
Me whos just starting to learn about this in Biology: I knew this would come in handy.
Man, this makes me want to create a tower defense game with kurgesagt-styled cells as the towers.
That would be so cool, especially if kurzgesagst made it
i think this is called "cellcraft".
It’s a biological variant of a recursion program.
Yes, something like a PvP game wherein you build armies of immune cells and fight of invaders. Players can fight each other with their own immune cells against us just like clash royale or plants vs zombies.

Let's all just take a moment to appreciate our little immune armies who keep us safe and scream "BLOODY MURDER!" Not all heroes wear capes. Some are covered in bloodied dead parts of the enemy looking for the right helper T cell.
For those of us who have autoimmune disease that army has definite leanings toward insurrection ...
