    I studied a marine virus in grad school and almost every source I cited at some point included the phrase "viruses are the most abundant biological entities in the world and world's oceans." I always loved the term "biological entity" for something that is very close to alive, but isn't quite.

      probably, but the problem is the brain-eating amoeba kills you very fast after it's detected, so even if you unleash the GIRUS, it's going to be difficult for them to take all the amoeba out in time.

      @@eVill420 what if tons are released into your bloodstream so that when inflammation occurs the giruses flood out too? or maybe incorporating them as a part of the immune system by having the mucus glands also make the giruses safely and incorporate them into the mucus lining the nose

      @@Jermain-cz4bh maybe it's possible, but I don't think the Giruses would infect them fast enough, it probably take a few hours for the virus to incubate in the amoeba, giving them enough time to multiply and still kill you. if you somehow injected them in the early stages though, that would work

    I think the thing that most amazes me is the fact that every virus side by side can make a line larger than 500 milky ways... thats insane, like,... REALLY insane. As a Space Engine enjoyer i understand pretty well the humongous size of the mily way, but i cant imagine it anymore, just because of this insane count of viruses...

    I've always been amazed by the comparison between the two extremes in size - on the one hand we have space which is so massive and unexplored and incomprehensibly expansive, and on the other hand there is a whole other micro-world which is so small but yet equally unexplored and incomprehensibly expansive. And then there's our normal world just floating in between

      actually there is scp-439, the bone hive. But that is based on a earwig that enters your body and produces abnormal bone growth so you become a immobile living hive for them. They eat some of your organs but keep the rest alive and functioning so you provide heat, protection from outside and, sometimes, they use your digestive track to pre-process their food and make it into a nutrient rich slurry....

      Because classifying things is stupid at its core. I mean, it's very useful, but when you look at it every living thing is just a marginal variation from another one. All the marginal variations make complexity. So it appears that a flower is something completely different from a giraffe (and it is), so you can classify them. But considering time and numbers, it's all about marginal variations. We think at life like it's a mathematical discrete group, but it's more like a mathematical continuous group

    Also: kind of fascinating that with large organisms you'll usually see the bigger hunting the smaller. But on the microscopic level, it often happens the other way around; with smaller things hunting larger things.

      I mean it does also happen on the large scale, our most prolific killers are microorganisms like bacteria and viruses. It's more like to gain energy you need to eat something smaller and to reproduce you need to infect something larger.

    It’s mind boggling to think about how all these things are happening inside your body at any time at an unimaginable scale. Whenever I read statistics about how many numbers of cells, viruses etc there are in me - It’s like trying to understand how big the Milky Way is, or simply how far away Saturn is from our planet. It’s impossible for our human brain to truly grasp these kind of scales.

      My sister was really sick once, and when she woke up after taking antibiotics said she had a crazy nightmare, where she was in her body watching her own soldiers come out and just decimate all these other soldiers that were just trying to live. She said she woke up feeling sad for the virus, but much better physically. Makes ya think. :)

      it most likely was, not necessarily by giruses, but any virus. if we look at our genome we will find many junk DNA that came from viruses. meaning its likely that many times in our evolutionary history, viruses may have influenced mutations that we carry to this day.

    Virophages could be the solution to cure cancer: The research centre in Tbilisi is using virophages for programming experiments. Their goal is to make them attack a specific cell - like bacteria, other viruses or cancer cells - so I think it is important to do more research so that these could be used as a potential medicine.

      virophages would specifically attack viruses only, for bacteria there's bacteriophages, but there's also viruses that we could use to program our immune system to attack cancer cells, which i think is what you're talking about
