  • Japan has unveiled plans for its biggest military build-up since World War Two. The government says it will double defense spending, bringing it up to the NATO standard of two percent of GDP. Japan's move away from a 'self-defense only' stance comes as it seeks to counter regional threats. It plans to acquire long-range missiles capable of striking China. Beijing said the plans undermine bilateral relations.

Japan did the right thing by honoring the peacetime treaty with the United States after WW2, but that time has long passed and it has a right to a full Military. Here in Australia, we are refurbishing the airforce base called Tindal near Darwin for use by the USA and Japan. Both countries will be welcome to train and host their forces on Australian bases, which is a spectacular and positive step for the alliance.

Japan has not been in a war since World War 2.
China however is an authoritarian Orwellian 1984 regime that crushes dissidents like at the Tiananmen Square massacre. Invades and annexed countries like Tibet and many others. Has invaded India, Vietnam, and tried to invade Taiwan. Literally engaged in genocides against the Tibetans, Uyghurs, and many others. During the Cultural Revolution millions were raped, murdered, and cannibalised by Chinese Red Guard Students. During the Great Leap Forward implemented by Mao Zedong where TENS OF MILLIONS of Chinese civilians died from famines. China has killed more of its own population than the former Imperialist Japanese Empire ever dreamed of.
Which of these two countries would you rather side with? The one that's having violent border clashes with India another nuclear power or Japan a modern democracy? China has become the new Imperial Empire of the 21st century who want to conquer and dominate all of Asia because the Han Chinese see themselves as the superior master race among Asians.
Japan has become one of the greatest democracies in human history after World War 2 while China has become a threat to all of Asia that has border clashes with India and wants to unite all of Asia under its influence.

I agree; it’s a long overdue decision. What is sad is that Japan continues living in the shadow of the nuclear threat. In this context, I would focus the most prominent minds of Japanese engineering on the intelligent defence systems that can intercept and destroy incoming missiles. At the same time, I would develop techniques and strategies that preemptively eliminate naval and air attacks. As a Japanese national, I think Japan`s decision to double her military expenditure is too late. Japan should have started to increase its defense budget since 1990`s when China began to grow her military budget quite aggressively. However, in spite of rising tension in Asia Pacific region, the Japanese government did not take any countermeasures against China`s expansionism. But it`s better than never. I hope this Japan`s plan to build up her military power will be deterrent against China and other hostile nations in Asia. But it`s also crucial for Japan to consolidate her military ties with the United States, Australia, India and other democratic states in order to contain China.

No, it's not too late , war it not about having the largest number or weaponry, it about how well trained your forces are and Japan are not out of touch with this.
They are more than capable of defending their state with or without support.

It will be interesting how Japan's government deals with the need to balance its economy and national security regarding China. China is Japan's largest and top trading partner with over 22% of foreign trade (ahead of USA). China will respond to Japan's assertiveness with actions to hurt Japan's economy through unfavorable trade. Personally, I do not see Japan willing to piss off China unless it deals with a big enough issue. On the other hand, I do see Japan picking a fight with Russia sooner over the issue of reclaiming the Kuril Islands (Russia's name for them, not Japan's).

You clearly skipped some history lessons. They couldn't even if they wanted, firstly if Japana ever started growing their military they would quickly be stopped by US because of what happened in the past, that's why there were initially placed US bases all over Japan. Secondly did you not listen at all on what this man was saying, there is a division among people who want and don't want this army expansion to happen
