This just shows how much potential these cups had, if only Retro tracks were taken seriously from the very start, rather than needing a couple games to get there
I feel like the biggest problem with the retro selection was they chose the simplest GCN tracks that would be easiest to remake, then watered them all down, and then put them all at the end of cups, so every cup had very anti climactic endings, seriously don’t know why they insisted on that
The Retro Courses in Mario Kart DS were choosen based on limitation so I don't blame them for that, but I also think they picked these courses because of Mario Kart DS's mechanics, one example is the snake-drifting. But I could be wrong. Tbh even though Mario Kart DS's Retro Grand Prix is easely the weekiest one in the hole series, the choises there is actually fine in my eyes.
I’m so glad that this series is finally out! I like this idea that you have. The DS retro courses were limited by system limitations and probably need the most fixing, lolZ
I disagree with Lightning Cup mainly, just because I think the Vanilla lake tracks are just as flawed as the Choco Island tracks. I also think Wario Colloseum would be a nightmare to get working on the DS. I would simply just make the final track SNES Rainbow Road since it would be the first ever Rainbow Road to get the retro treatment in the first game with retro courses. I would then probably either keep Yoshi Circuit as the first track in the cup, or replace it with Waluigi Stadium due to it sharing a lot more assets with Wario Stadium.
Here's the thing a lot of future Retro cups had Circuit tracks as the final one of a cup and honestly as long as it isn't the Lightning Cup I like it that way. The final track in a cup doesn't have to be the most complicated one.
My version: Shell Cup: -SNES Mario Circuit 1 (add bleachers) -GCN Peach Beach -GBA Riverside Park (add some elevation, Goombas, and Piranha Plants) -N64 Kalimari Desert (improve the scenery by adding an oasis and a little town) Banana Cup: -GCN Mushroom Bridge (bring back the shortcuts & mushroom cars) -SNES Donut Plains 2 (add elevation and split paths on the pond) -N64 Frappe Snowland (turn the ice hallway into a cave) -GBA Cheese Land (add elevation and make the background darker while making the track low-gravity) Leaf Cup: -SNES Koopa Beach 2 (add wilderness in the scenery to make it sound more dangerous than the other beach track I added) -N64 Choco Mountain -GCN Yoshi Circuit (bring back the shortcut and the Yoshi references) -GBA Sky Garden (add a big jump at the end with elevation) Lightning Cup: -GCN Wario Colosseum -N64 Banshee Boardwalk -GBA Bowser Castle 3 (add elevation and make the music better) -SNES Rainbow Road (make it very tight so it's as brutally difficult as the OG one, with elevation and a big jump at the end)
i like how you kept the limitations of the ds in mind. used to excuse the bad retro selection because of that but even with the weaker hardware they definitely couldve done better
Good job for keeping the DS' limitations in mind all the way through. I'd love to see a video about retro tracks thst had their designs changed, like with hanggliders and underwater.
Been waiting for this series for a long time now and I'm glad it's finally debuted! I was already curious of your thoughts on fixing the retro cup courses back in your MKDS cup ranking where you had a brief suggestion for the Lightning Cup. Can't wait for the other retro cup fixes!
Yeah I wanted to get this out before we perhaps get a Nintendo Direct and other announcements lol! I'll probably make fixes of Mario Kart Wii's and the Booster Course Pass' retro selections as well at some point in the future!
This is a really interesting take on the concept, certainly a bit better than what I did a year ago. Also a bit flattering that this video is partially inspired by mjney, a full circle if you will
This is a really solid selection overall! Though I think GBA Luigi Circuit could actually start off the lightning cup. I know a circuit doesn’t seem like a good fit to the lightning cup but mkwii started their lightning cup with snes mc3. And gba Luigi circuit could fit there because it’s rainy which can correlate to lightning and it’s one of the better more ambitious gba circuit. And then maybe sky garden can be moved to final track leaf cup then move vanilla lake 2 and banshee boardwalk up a slot
I kind of like the hectic briefness of the 2d tracks, they have such a chaotic vibe to them coupled with the borderline surreal lo-fi-visuals. Choco Island is so miserable that it kind of comes back around to being fun. The 64 remakes are just fine. The only tracks I really dislike are the Double Dash downgrades. They just feel sad.
Excellent video! DS retros are incredibly hit or miss (even then most “hits” are good at best imo though a few retros stand out) but your fixes definitely make the lineup much better! Now if only you could use a time machine and make this reality during Mario Kart DS’s development.👀
I actually did an experiment where I changed DS' selection. And then I gave one to every other game (including Tour and the BCP) based around the changes made to DS a few months ago. Nice to see someone I watch tackle the subject. I still stuck with Nintendo's general structure and ideas but tried to increase variety by a lot. (Also there's an underlying presence in this project where they spent an extra year developing DS in particular to work around limitations) SNES Mario Circuit 1 N64 Moo Moo Farm GBA Shy Guy Beach (I feel like DS is just the game where a remake of this would feel best-suited, fits the vibes) GCN Baby Park (Just give em like a year and they can add, like, a Bowser Shell launcher or something) SNES Donut Plains 1 N64 Choco Mountain GBA Luigi Circuit GCN Mushroom Bridge (Yup, that's just the entire Leaf Cup being moved up except the SNES course) SNES Koopa Beach 2 N64 Royal Raceway (OG track has Mario 64 assets, I was thinking this could pull from 64DS) GBA Sky Garden GCN Sherbet Land (Less of an "I wanted this" pick and more of a "It fits the puzzle too well" pick. Simple enough to work though I think.) GCN Yoshi Circuit (Decided to invert the order for the final cup, it deserves it) GBA Bowser Castle 3 (Star Cup finale going to Lightning Cup two games later pattern, anyone? BC2 doesn't work and BC4 gets too much of a future glowup to waste it here) N64 Banshee Boardwalk SNES Rainbow Road (Surprisingly obvious selection that very few people seem inclined to actually go forward with) I think it makes sense, though it certainly warrants changes to future entries (both the GBA replacements are the ones they chose for Wii lol).
this is my favorite mk game, and i too think the retros we got were weird as hell. the fact you considered hardware limitations makes this feel more authentic and natural in my eyes. good video!
Very good choices and selection. I say I would change Lighting so Wario Colosseum would be first fallowed by Banshee Boardwalk, Sky Gardens and lastly SNES Rainbow Road. As I feel SNES Rainbow Road easily could’ve been handled on the DS.
It’s funny how I think the Lightning Cup is the best retro cup in this game, yet in my fixing, the Leaf Cup is the one that got the lesser amount of changes.
Remember objects in MKDS don’t strain unless there’s a ton and I mean a ton in a small area because the game hides objects far out of view and stops their codd
@@comedyskitrehman6001 it kinda makes sense that GCN Yoshi Circuit was the first track made for MKDS because they didn't make any new tracks for the game yet and so they experimented using an older track before making new tracks.
DS and Wii Retro Tracks were the most bizarre picks that I rather play their Nitro Cups. 7 at least got some good Picks and 8 is where they went all in.
For the most part, I agree, but I’d adjust some things: Shell cup: Mario circuit 1, Koopa troopa beach, riverside park and daisy cruiser. Banana Cup: Donut plains 2, Choco mountain, gba bowser castle 2, and Waluigi stadium (yes, I know we already have Waluigi pinball, but gameplay wise, they’re visually distinct enough from each other. Plus, the original game chose two Luigi circuits) Leaf cup: Koopa beach 2, frappe snowland, sunset wilds, and mushroom city. Mushroom bridge had too simple of a layout for a leaf cup track, just look it up. Lightning cup: Vanilla Lake 2, Banchee Boardwalk, Sky Garden, and DK Mountain. But that’s my opinion, tell me yours! I’d be happy to know.
I have an idea to spice up the difficulty in your retro selection. Put Mushroom Bridge (in its full glory) as the starter course of the Banana Cup instead of Luigi Circuit, then Yoshi Circuit (also in its full glory) as the second course of the Leaf Cup, as it fits the difficulty of this cup. This way you make the Banana Cup & the Leaf Cup even better.
Here's my version of mario kart ds retro tracks: Shell cup: Snes mario circuit 1 Gba riverside park N64 koopa troopa beach Gcn dry dry desert Banana cup: Snes koopa beach 1 Gcn daisy cruiser Gba snow land N64 toads turnpike Leaf cup: N64 royal raceway Gba cheep cheep island Gcn mushroom city Snes rainbow road Lightning cup: Gcn sherbet land (make it less annoying) Snes bowser castle 3 N64 banshee boardwalk Gba sky garden (Leaf cup might be better but this is my opinion)
Shell Cup ------------ SNES Mario Circuit 1 GBA Cheep Cheep Island N64 Yoshi Valley GCN Dry Dry Desert ------------ Banana Cup ------------ SNES Donut Plains 2 GCN Mushroom Bridge GBA Riverside Park N64 Mario Stadium ----------- Leaf Cup ----------- SNES Koopa Beach 1 N64 Banshee Boardwalk GCN Sherbet Land GBA Cheese Land ----------- Lightning Cup ----------- GCN Daisy Cruiser GBA Sky Garden N64 Frappe Snowland SNES Rainbow Road
Great video! Agreed with a lot of the points here, and your Shell Cup is almost identical to my original one, with the final track being different. Here's how I would fix the retro track selection in this game (using a chronological order like the vanilla game): Shell Cup: • SNES Mario Circuit 1 • N64 Moo Moo Farm • GBA Riverside Park • GCN Dry Dry Desert Banana Cup: • SNES Donut Plains 2 • N64 Choco Mountain • GBA Bowser Castle 2 • GCN Mushroom Bridge Leaf Cup: • SNES Koopa Beach 2 • N64 Frappe Snowland • GBA Luigi Circuit • GCN DK Mountain Lightning Cup: • SNES Choco Island 2 • N64 Banshee Boardwalk • GBA Sky Garden • GCN Wario Colosseum -------------------------------------------------------------- And now my fixes without being constrained to placing each track in chronological order: Shell Cup: • SNES Mario Circuit 1 • N64 Moo Moo Farm • GBA Riverside Park • GCN Dry Dry Desert Banana Cup: • N64 Koopa Troopa Beach • SNES Donut Plains 3 • GBA Luigi Circuit • GCN Mushroom Bridge Leaf Cup: • GCN Yoshi Circuit • N64 Choco Mountain • SNES Vanilla Lake 2 • GBA Bowser Castle 3 Lightning Cup: • GCN Wario Colosseum • N64 Banshee Boardwalk • GBA Sky Garden • SNES Rainbow Road -------------------------------------------------------------- Honestly, most of the track picks from the vanilla game just needed to be shuffled around and then they would be fine, while the few others could have been replaced with more suitable tracks. The chronological track order might've restricted the track selection, but even then the devs could have done MUCH better, as shown by my suggested fix above. Still, they did an alright job, considering that was the first time they ever implemented retro tracks like they do now, and because of hardware limitations.
this is a very cool (dare i say, kingly) video! this is actually something i've also tackled in my spare time (not as a video, just for fun), though i did it for all of the mario kart games with the same "formula" as mkds (so not tour). i actually used the chronological order thing that mkds does to do something a bit clever: each cup, the slot the game is in is shifted down by 1. so the shell cup would keep its snes track in the first slot, then the banana cup's second slot is a snes track, etc. this meant i could end off the lightning cup with a snes track, and i used that to end off the first retro selection with snes rainbow road, echoing the shell cup starting with snes mario circuit 1, which i think is pretty clever. i also tried keeping tracks in the same overall "cup," so no mushroom cup courses went outside of the shell cup, for example. the exception is, of course, gba sky garden, since it probably should go in the leaf cup, but like... come on, gba sky garden being the only track to appear in the same cup twice is such a cool piece of trivia! the full distribution i made for mkds is: shell cup: snes mario circuit 1, n64 koopa troopa beach, gba riverside park, gcn dry dry desert (seems familiar...) banana cup: gcn mushroom bridge, snes donut plains 2, n64 frappe snowland, gba bowser castle 2 leaf cup: gba luigi circuit, gcn dk mountain, snes choco island 2, n64 royal raceway (yes i know, choco island 2, but i think it fits) lightning cup: n64 banshee boardwalk, gba sky garden, gcn bowser's castle, snes rainbow road (also ending the lightning cup with another bowser's castle) some of these tracks probably would suffer from some limitations (like gcn bowser's castle), but i think overall this is much better than the actual mkds retro track distribution. plus it doesn't have baby park and that's always a win in my book lmao
Personally, I would have brought back SNES Rainbow Road to put at the end of the Lightning Cup as one final challenge. I’m surprised they didn’t put it in originally and waited until 7 to bring SNES Rainbow Road back.
Before watching, here's my ideas: Shell Cup - SNES Mario Circuit 1, N64 Koopa Troopa Beach, GBA Riverside Park, GCN Dry Dry Desert Banana Cup - SNES Donut Plains 2, N64 Frappe Snowland, GBA Sunset Wilds, GCN Mushroom Bridge Leaf Cup - SNES Choco Island 2, N64 Royal Raceway, GBA Bowser Castle 3, GCN Daisy Cruiser Lightning Cup - SNES Ghost Valley 3, N64 Yoshi Valley, GBA Sky Garden, GCN Wario Colosseum
My Version: Shell Cup: SNES Mario Circuit 1 (Add Oil puddle hazards), GCN Peach Beach, GBA Luigi Circuit, N64 Kalimari Desert (with tunnel without OOB) Banana Cup: SNES Ghost Valley 1, GCN Sherbet Land (without the annoying Freezies), N64 Choco Mountain, GBA Sky Garden Leaf Cup: GBA Snow Land (Added with Snowmen to make it feel like N64 Frappe Snowland), SNES Bowser Castle 3, GCN Waluigi Stadium, N64 Wario Stadium (with more hazards and added elevation and only 2 Laps) Lightning Cup: SNES Koopa Beach 2, N64 Banshee Boardwalk, GBA Bowser Castle 4 (Only 2 Laps), GCN Rainbow Road
Maybe controversial, but I liked Baby Park in DS. I mean yeah it's simple, but it was my introduction with it so it was fine for me, and it sure was different from the rest of the tracks. Also there's this mission in mission mode where you need to make a certain amount of Mini-Turbos in Baby Park, which is how I learned it was a thing, and so I looked into the instruction manual to learn how to do them. I think it's a good choice to have Baby Park as a young player's introduction to Mini-Turbos through mission mode, so I say let's keep Baby Park.
I think Golden's take on fixing the Retro Cups was better. I believe that keeping the prefixes in chronological order was a good idea. While I agree with Golden's track selection, there are some courses I would switch around. First, I feel like Mushroom Bridge is too easy to be in the Leaf Cup. In fact, I think it's even easier than Dry Dry Desert. Second, I find Koopa Beach 2's difficulty to be more suitable for the Lightning Cup. With all that said, this is how I see what should've been Mario Kart DS's Retro selection. Shell Cup SNES Mario Circuit 1 N64 Koopa Troopa Beach GBA Boo Lake GCN Mushroom Bridge Banana Cup SNES Donut Plains 2 N64 Frappe Snowland GBA Bowser Castle 2 GCN Dry Dry Desert Leaf Cup SNES Vanilla Lake 1 N64 Choco Mountain GBA Luigi Circuit GCN Daisy Cruiser Lightning Cup SNES Koopa Beach 2 N64 Banshee Boardwalk GBA Sky Garden GCN Bowser's Castle
Oh my god, I have been thinking about this topic a lot recently and you made a video on it! I agree with a lot of the things you said but I would change some things. I think you could've placed Wario Colosseum at the start of the lightning cup and instead place SNES RR at the end of the cup, it feels kinda weird that the first ever RR was not in the first game with retros. I also don't know about Frappe snowland being a leaf cup track, I think Sherbet land N64 could've made more sense for that slot. Really good video tho! Ha ett riktigt bra sommarlov!
I was considering to put SNES Rainbow Road at the end of Lightning Cup, but with the limitations of the DS, I wasn't sure they'd be able to replicate the shockwaves we saw in future installments!
@@AlbertBoris I don't really think the shockwaves would have mattered as much in the DS version because you can't trick in that game. I think it comes down more to the thwomps instead.
I honestly wish they could've atleast tried implementing the tracks you mentioned into the game instead of picking the most boring and probably the most easiest tracks to code into the game Like seriously? Who was clamoring for Peach circuit or Baby park to return?? Great list overall!
I worry that with its large size, something like Wario Colosseum would be challenging for the DS to render- But if they did somehow pull it off I certainly wouldn't be complaining. That would've been awesome.
I find it very interesting reimagining how the retro course selections in the series could have been better. With that being said, here is what I would change and why, while still keeping them in chronological order: Shell Cup 🐢 SNES Mario Circuit 1- It was the first track in the series, so it makes sense to have it as the introduction to retro courses. However, I would keep this and all the SNES remakes at 5 laps and spruce up the visuals a bit. N64 Moo Moo Farm- Maybe keep the original amount of monty moles and otherwise it's fine the way it is GBA Riverside Park- We really should have gotten this from the start. It's an enjoyable track that fits here perfectly. GCN Peach Beach- It's a simple yet still enjoyable track so I would include it here instead of Wii, where I would replace with Baby Park as I think it would fit a lot better in Mario Kart Wii. Banana Cup 🍌 SNES Donut Plains 2- More interesting and less simple than Donut Plains 1 N64 Frappe Snowland- I would keep it the way it is GBA Luigi Circuit- A good fit for this game, but it makes more sense for the Banana Cup GCN Mushroom Bridge- Again, makes sense to include it but fits a lot better in the Banana Cup. I would also spruce up the visuals, and keep the bridge, sidewalk and pipe shortcuts as well as more of the vehicles from the original. Leaf Cup 🍁 SNES Koopa Beach 1- More enjoyable than Koopa Beach 2 with more islands to drive across N64 Choco Mountain- No changes needed GBA Sky Garden- Makes more sense in the leaf cup, and otherwise is perfect the way it is GCN Yoshi Circuit- Good inclusion, but fits much better in the leaf cup. I would also again spruce up the visuals, and keep the yoshicopter and tunnel shortcut. Lightning Cup ⚡️ SNES Vanilla Lake 1- Could be improved a lot on the DS. I think Choco Island 2 would work a lot better on the Wii due to bikes and that game's trick system. N64 Banshee Boardwalk- Perfect the way it is GBA Bowser Castle 4- The perfect retro Bowser Castle to include in this game GCN Dino Dino Jungle- I believe it could work here as it worked on the 3DS and would be a solid pick for the last track of the lightning cup
for me these were what I would change shell: Mario circuit 1 is staying (needed to have the 1st one in) moo moo farm is staying (just for all n64s all track were solid picks and work well so they are not changing so no description on n64) peach circuit is becoming riverside park ( we don't need another circuit and riverside park is a good choice for a jungle) Luigi circuit is becoming baby park with 7 laps (makes more sense to be a shell cup track and as for chaos. im increasing the length a bit but also haveing item boxes on the straightaways) banana: donut plains 1 is becoming Choco island 1 ( don't need the 1st 2 tracks and Choco island doesn't have much ramps) frappe snow land is staying bowser castle 2 is becoming boo lake ( just pure bias for this one) baby park is becoming mushroom bridge ( mushroom bridge is a flower cup track and if they just allow us to drive the top of the bridge but with no boost then this would be a solid track) leaf: koopa beach 2 is staying ( no problems with this and haven't seen a beach track yet) Choco mountain is staying Luigi circuit is becoming ribbon road ( we need a track everyone loves) mushroom bridge is becoming Yoshi circuit (yes I moved the gcn course one cup forward and not changed much to effect it) lightning: Choco island 2 is becoming bowser castle 3 ( we need a bowser castle banshee boardwalk is staying sky garden is staying. Yoshi circuit is becoming Dino Dino jungle (honestly i don't see much train to this track except maybe the Dino)
Honestly I've tried this before and one idea i do like is having the lightning cup be sky garden, dino dino jungle, N64 Bowser Castle and Snes Rainbow Road. i think none have too many obstacles besides thwomps and noshi that they would work in ds
Shell Cup: SNES Mario Circuit 1 N64 Moo Moo Farm GBA Riverside Park GCN Peach Beach Banana Cup: SNES Donut Plains 1 N64 Frappe Snowland GBA Luigi Circuit GCN Mushroom City Leaf Cup: SNES Ghost Valley 3 N64 Choco Mountain GBA Cheep Cheep Island GCN Yoshi Circuit Lightning Cup: SNES Koopa Beach 2 N64 Banshee Boardwalk GBA Sky Garden GCN DK Mountain All SNES tracks are 5 laps long

My one worry with Wario Colosseum is the scaling and lap count. Either this track would become really short or way too long depending on how it would be executed, and it’s already a pretty divisive track. I can’t help but think it’ll just become what Baby Park is today in some way, or end up with the same problem that N64 Rainbow Road faces with either the original or the remake.
- Shell Cup SNES MArio Circuit 1 N64 Moo Moo Farm GBA Riverside Park GCN Dry Dry Desert - Banana Cup N64 Frappe Snowland SNES Donut Plains 2 GCN Mario Circuit GBA Cheese Land - Leaf Cup GBA Luigi Circuit GCN Mushroom City SNES Bowser Castle 3 N64 Choco Mountain - Lightning GCN Dino Dino Jungle GBA Sky Garden N64 Banshee Boardwalk SNES Rainbow Road
I wonder how things would've turned out if they just took all the N64 tracks as retros similar to how they took all the SNES tracks for Super Circuit. The N64 retros were implemented the best in my opinion.
I'd agree with your Picks Albert, but also, I did the same thing but for the MK8DX BCP. @@CEOofAustraliaThere’s too much Wii tracks as well for the game that directly follows MKWII. Coconut Mall should honestly have been remade in the MK8 base game, not MK7.
In my opinion I feel like almost all of the choices were fine (with the exception of Baby Park because....really Nintendo? I would've swapped that for Waluigi Stadium) for the DS' limitations. I personally think they should save some of the bigger tracks like Wario Colosseum for the console games since they have more hardware to do them justice.
Id probably make the last one Royal Raceway and have the castle be like the One from Mario circuit but with SM64DS elements that way the character can end the race driving to peaches castle and all lining up infront as toad gives thrm their rewards
I see lots of people talking about MKDS as one of the best Mario Kart games of the saga because it has a Mission mode and having nice nitro tracks like Waluigi Pinball, but that people tend to forget that this game has arguably the worst selection of retro tracks ever. Don't get me wrong, MKDS is a great game and deserves its praise, but I think it's overrated due to nostalgia. It's glad to see someone trying to improve those retro tracks, nice video!

-SNES Rainbow Road (make it very tight so it's as brutally difficult as the OG one, with elevation and a big jump at the end)
Pretty good list however, swap gba castle 3 for 4 since it's more dangerous and has more hazards that wont affect by limitations
@@GDevoney That is a good idea too.
@@GDevoneyI’d save GBA BC4 for the base game of MK8 for obvious reasons.
Tbh I always loved Baby Park as the finale of the Banana Cup because of how troll-ish it felt😂
i like how you kept the limitations of the ds in mind. used to excuse the bad retro selection because of that but even with the weaker hardware they definitely couldve done better
@AlbertBoris you should also fix mario kart 8 cups, even though they are good, there are some massive stinkers. Like toads turnpike.
i’d love to see how you’d fix other games retro selections! this was a really interesting video :)
What I would do:
Shell Cup:
-SNES Mario Circuit 1
-N64 Moo Moo Farm
-GBA Shy Guy Beach
-GCN Mushroom Bridge
Banana Cup:
-GCN Dry Dry Desert
-GBA Boo Lake
-SNES Choco Island 1
-N64 Toad's Turnpike
Leaf Cup:
-N64 Frappe Snowland
-GCN Yoshi Circuit
-SNES Bowser's Castle 2
-GBA Ribbon Road
Lightning Cup:
-GBA Sky Garden
-N64 Wario Stadium
-GCN Dino Dino Jungle
-SNES Rainbow Road
Dang, I love your selection. Specially with WC being the final track on the retro cups. 😍
I love GCN Wario Colosseum, but there is no way in hell they could’ve gotten a track that long to work on the DS.
The Double Dash remakes in DS & the Wii remakes in MK7 just make you wonder why you aren’t playing the original versions🤣🤣🤣
(Also there's an underlying presence in this project where they spent an extra year developing DS in particular to work around limitations)
SNES Mario Circuit 1
N64 Moo Moo Farm
GBA Shy Guy Beach (I feel like DS is just the game where a remake of this would feel best-suited, fits the vibes)
GCN Baby Park (Just give em like a year and they can add, like, a Bowser Shell launcher or something)
SNES Donut Plains 1
N64 Choco Mountain
GBA Luigi Circuit
GCN Mushroom Bridge (Yup, that's just the entire Leaf Cup being moved up except the SNES course)
SNES Koopa Beach 2
N64 Royal Raceway (OG track has Mario 64 assets, I was thinking this could pull from 64DS)
GBA Sky Garden
GCN Sherbet Land (Less of an "I wanted this" pick and more of a "It fits the puzzle too well" pick. Simple enough to work though I think.)
GCN Yoshi Circuit (Decided to invert the order for the final cup, it deserves it)
GBA Bowser Castle 3 (Star Cup finale going to Lightning Cup two games later pattern, anyone? BC2 doesn't work and BC4 gets too much of a future glowup to waste it here)
N64 Banshee Boardwalk
SNES Rainbow Road (Surprisingly obvious selection that very few people seem inclined to actually go forward with)
I think it makes sense, though it certainly warrants changes to future entries (both the GBA replacements are the ones they chose for Wii lol).
Baby Park actually makes so much more sense for Mario Kart Wii than DS
True!!
this is my favorite mk game, and i too think the retros we got were weird as hell. the fact you considered hardware limitations makes this feel more authentic and natural in my eyes. good video!
Time for some kingly content again!
I would LOVE to see your interpretation of the BCP!
Or any of the games
11:47 If Sunset Wilds didn’t have the sunset in your retro cups version, it would be the GCN Baby Park of this MKDS retro selection lol
Very good choices and selection. I say I would change Lighting so Wario Colosseum would be first fallowed by Banshee Boardwalk, Sky Gardens and lastly SNES Rainbow Road. As I feel SNES Rainbow Road easily could’ve been handled on the DS.
I like what you did with the shell cup! If we had it would of been a cute lineup being in order not only installments but also track order!
It’s funny how I think the Lightning Cup is the best retro cup in this game, yet in my fixing, the Leaf Cup is the one that got the lesser amount of changes.
11:27 Even without limitations, I don’t think they’d do the Shy Guy thing if Sunset Wilds was in MKDS because it could be very controversial.
Remember objects in MKDS don’t strain unless there’s a ton and I mean a ton in a small area because the game hides objects far out of view and stops their codd
"Mario Kart DS was the first game in the series to introduce retro tracks"
Super Circuit: "Am I a joke to you?"
She said "in the way we all know and love them" therefore, she’s referring to the Shell-Lightning cups.
Don't diss us DS fans
We know the Retro selection is garbage but game still peak trust
Fun fact: GCN Yoshi Circuit was the first track made during the game's development.
I thought it was Mario kart Double Dash Remake ds version 😂
@@comedyskitrehman6001 it kinda makes sense that GCN Yoshi Circuit was the first track made for MKDS because they didn't make any new tracks for the game yet and so they experimented using an older track before making new tracks.
@@lol-ih1tl ok
DS and Wii Retro Tracks were the most bizarre picks that I rather play their Nitro Cups. 7 at least got some good Picks and 8 is where they went all in.
Wii could use a fix, too. It's still insane they brought back 3 Mario Circuits.
nah, wii had the best track selection in the series
@@gudgubFACTS
Wii's nitro tracks were great, but the retro picks were anything but that.
@@SNAKESSMANDONUT they brought back some of my all-time favorites tracks from the franchise.
Loved this so much! Please continue to do this!
Here's my version of mario kart ds retro tracks:
Shell cup:
Snes mario circuit 1
Gba riverside park
N64 koopa troopa beach
Gcn dry dry desert
Banana cup:
Snes koopa beach 1
Gcn daisy cruiser
Gba snow land
N64 toads turnpike
Leaf cup:
N64 royal raceway
Gba cheep cheep island
Gcn mushroom city
Snes rainbow road
Lightning cup:
Gcn sherbet land (make it less annoying)
Snes bowser castle 3
N64 banshee boardwalk
Gba sky garden
(Leaf cup might be better but this is my opinion)
Where’s bertil auris!!! Great video to.. I completely forgot that she’ll cups content 😂😂
Will you fix all the Mario Kart retro selections?
I might do a few more retro track fixes in the future as well, although not immediately!
I like this fixed retro list, I agree with it 100% It's very good.
Shell Cup
------------
SNES Mario Circuit 1

Great video! Agreed with a lot of the points here, and your Shell Cup is almost identical to my original one, with the final track being different. Here's how I would fix the retro track selection in this game (using a chronological order like the vanilla game):
Shell Cup:
• SNES Mario Circuit 1
• N64 Moo Moo Farm
• GBA Riverside Park
• GCN Dry Dry Desert
Banana Cup:
• SNES Donut Plains 2
• N64 Choco Mountain
• GBA Bowser Castle 2
• GCN Mushroom Bridge
Leaf Cup:
• SNES Koopa Beach 2
• N64 Frappe Snowland
• GBA Luigi Circuit
• GCN DK Mountain
Lightning Cup:
• SNES Choco Island 2
• N64 Banshee Boardwalk
• GBA Sky Garden
• GCN Wario Colosseum
--------------------------------------------------------------
And now my fixes without being constrained to placing each track in chronological order:
Shell Cup:
• SNES Mario Circuit 1
• N64 Moo Moo Farm
• GBA Riverside Park
• GCN Dry Dry Desert
Banana Cup:
• N64 Koopa Troopa Beach
• SNES Donut Plains 3
• GBA Luigi Circuit
• GCN Mushroom Bridge
Leaf Cup:
• GCN Yoshi Circuit
• N64 Choco Mountain
• SNES Vanilla Lake 2
• GBA Bowser Castle 3
Lightning Cup:
• GCN Wario Colosseum
• N64 Banshee Boardwalk
• GBA Sky Garden
• SNES Rainbow Road
--------------------------------------------------------------
Honestly, most of the track picks from the vanilla game just needed to be shuffled around and then they would be fine, while the few others could have been replaced with more suitable tracks. The chronological track order might've restricted the track selection, but even then the devs could have done MUCH better, as shown by my suggested fix above. Still, they did an alright job, considering that was the first time they ever implemented retro tracks like they do now, and because of hardware limitations.
this is a very cool (dare i say, kingly) video!
this is actually something i've also tackled in my spare time (not as a video, just for fun), though i did it for all of the mario kart games with the same "formula" as mkds (so not tour). i actually used the chronological order thing that mkds does to do something a bit clever: each cup, the slot the game is in is shifted down by 1. so the shell cup would keep its snes track in the first slot, then the banana cup's second slot is a snes track, etc. this meant i could end off the lightning cup with a snes track, and i used that to end off the first retro selection with snes rainbow road, echoing the shell cup starting with snes mario circuit 1, which i think is pretty clever. i also tried keeping tracks in the same overall "cup," so no mushroom cup courses went outside of the shell cup, for example. the exception is, of course, gba sky garden, since it probably should go in the leaf cup, but like... come on, gba sky garden being the only track to appear in the same cup twice is such a cool piece of trivia!
the full distribution i made for mkds is:
shell cup: snes mario circuit 1, n64 koopa troopa beach, gba riverside park, gcn dry dry desert (seems familiar...)
banana cup: gcn mushroom bridge, snes donut plains 2, n64 frappe snowland, gba bowser castle 2
leaf cup: gba luigi circuit, gcn dk mountain, snes choco island 2, n64 royal raceway (yes i know, choco island 2, but i think it fits)
lightning cup: n64 banshee boardwalk, gba sky garden, gcn bowser's castle, snes rainbow road (also ending the lightning cup with another bowser's castle)
some of these tracks probably would suffer from some limitations (like gcn bowser's castle), but i think overall this is much better than the actual mkds retro track distribution. plus it doesn't have baby park and that's always a win in my book lmao
I actually experimented with that pattern as well, a couple of years ago! It would definitely be an interesting twist, and certainly possible!
Personally, I would have brought back SNES Rainbow Road to put at the end of the Lightning Cup as one final challenge. I’m surprised they didn’t put it in originally and waited until 7 to bring SNES Rainbow Road back.
I would only replace GCN Luigi Circuit with GCN Mario Circuit for the Banana Cup because the track was planned to return for Mario Kart DS
Before watching, here's my ideas:
Shell Cup - SNES Mario Circuit 1, N64 Koopa Troopa Beach, GBA Riverside Park, GCN Dry Dry Desert
Banana Cup - SNES Donut Plains 2, N64 Frappe Snowland, GBA Sunset Wilds, GCN Mushroom Bridge
Leaf Cup - SNES Choco Island 2, N64 Royal Raceway, GBA Bowser Castle 3, GCN Daisy Cruiser
Lightning Cup - SNES Ghost Valley 3, N64 Yoshi Valley, GBA Sky Garden, GCN Wario Colosseum
I misheard "occasional monty moles" as "vocational optimals" for a second there...
My Version:
Shell Cup: SNES Mario Circuit 1 (Add Oil puddle hazards), GCN Peach Beach, GBA Luigi Circuit, N64 Kalimari Desert (with tunnel without OOB)
Banana Cup: SNES Ghost Valley 1, GCN Sherbet Land (without the annoying Freezies), N64 Choco Mountain, GBA Sky Garden
Leaf Cup: GBA Snow Land (Added with Snowmen to make it feel like N64 Frappe Snowland), SNES Bowser Castle 3, GCN Waluigi Stadium, N64 Wario Stadium (with more hazards and added elevation and only 2 Laps)
Lightning Cup: SNES Koopa Beach 2, N64 Banshee Boardwalk, GBA Bowser Castle 4 (Only 2 Laps), GCN Rainbow Road
Shell Cup
SNES Mario Circuit 1
N64 Koopa Troopa Beach
GBA Boo Lake
GCN Mushroom Bridge
Banana Cup
SNES Donut Plains 2
N64 Frappe Snowland
GBA Bowser Castle 2
GCN Dry Dry Desert
Leaf Cup
SNES Vanilla Lake 1
N64 Choco Mountain
GBA Luigi Circuit
GCN Daisy Cruiser
Lightning Cup
SNES Koopa Beach 2
N64 Banshee Boardwalk
GBA Sky Garden
GCN Bowser's Castle
I'd love to see you do the rest of the games but keeping in mind the changes you made here.
I honestly wish they could've atleast tried implementing the tracks you mentioned into the game instead of picking the most boring and probably the most easiest tracks to code into the game
Like seriously? Who was clamoring for Peach circuit or Baby park to return??
Great list overall!
I'd actually put in Dino Dino Jungle to end off the retro tracks for this game. It seems like a fairly good track to end
I worry that with its large size, something like Wario Colosseum would be challenging for the DS to render- But if they did somehow pull it off I certainly wouldn't be complaining. That would've been awesome.
I agree with all you're choices, I would just swap riverside park with cheep cheep island
I find it very interesting reimagining how the retro course selections in the series could have been better. With that being said, here is what I would change and why, while still keeping them in chronological order:
Shell Cup 🐢
SNES Mario Circuit 1- It was the first track in the series, so it makes sense to have it as the introduction to retro courses. However, I would keep this and all the SNES remakes at 5 laps and spruce up the visuals a bit.
N64 Moo Moo Farm- Maybe keep the original amount of monty moles and otherwise it's fine the way it is
GBA Riverside Park- We really should have gotten this from the start. It's an enjoyable track that fits here perfectly.
GCN Peach Beach- It's a simple yet still enjoyable track so I would include it here instead of Wii, where I would replace with Baby Park as I think it would fit a lot better in Mario Kart Wii.
Banana Cup 🍌
SNES Donut Plains 2- More interesting and less simple than Donut Plains 1
N64 Frappe Snowland- I would keep it the way it is
GBA Luigi Circuit- A good fit for this game, but it makes more sense for the Banana Cup
GCN Mushroom Bridge- Again, makes sense to include it but fits a lot better in the Banana Cup. I would also spruce up the visuals, and keep the bridge, sidewalk and pipe shortcuts as well as more of the vehicles from the original.
Leaf Cup 🍁
SNES Koopa Beach 1- More enjoyable than Koopa Beach 2 with more islands to drive across
N64 Choco Mountain- No changes needed
GBA Sky Garden- Makes more sense in the leaf cup, and otherwise is perfect the way it is
GCN Yoshi Circuit- Good inclusion, but fits much better in the leaf cup. I would also again spruce up the visuals, and keep the yoshicopter and tunnel shortcut.
Lightning Cup ⚡️
SNES Vanilla Lake 1- Could be improved a lot on the DS. I think Choco Island 2 would work a lot better on the Wii due to bikes and that game's trick system.
N64 Banshee Boardwalk- Perfect the way it is
GBA Bowser Castle 4- The perfect retro Bowser Castle to include in this game
GCN Dino Dino Jungle- I believe it could work here as it worked on the 3DS and would be a solid pick for the last track of the lightning cup
for me these were what I would change
shell:
Mario circuit 1 is staying (needed to have the 1st one in)
moo moo farm is staying (just for all n64s all track were solid picks and work well so they are not changing so no description on n64)
peach circuit is becoming riverside park ( we don't need another circuit and riverside park is a good choice for a jungle)
Luigi circuit is becoming baby park with 7 laps (makes more sense to be a shell cup track and as for chaos. im increasing the length a bit but also haveing item boxes on the straightaways)
banana:
donut plains 1 is becoming Choco island 1 ( don't need the 1st 2 tracks and Choco island doesn't have much ramps)
frappe snow land is staying
bowser castle 2 is becoming boo lake ( just pure bias for this one)
baby park is becoming mushroom bridge ( mushroom bridge is a flower cup track and if they just allow us to drive the top of the bridge but with no boost then this would be a solid track)
leaf:
koopa beach 2 is staying ( no problems with this and haven't seen a beach track yet)
Choco mountain is staying
Luigi circuit is becoming ribbon road ( we need a track everyone loves)
mushroom bridge is becoming Yoshi circuit (yes I moved the gcn course one cup forward and not changed much to effect it)
lightning:
Choco island 2 is becoming bowser castle 3 ( we need a bowser castle
banshee boardwalk is staying
sky garden is staying.
Someone already remade Dry Dry Desert in MKDS with a custom coded tornado and piranha plant BTW.

The N64 retros were implemented the best in my opinion.

I especially love how Wuhu Mountain Loop ends the penultimate wave.

Albert Boris, You should make a fixing Mario Kart 7 and 8 retro cups videos! Please!
Why does everyone say DS Bowser's Castle is similar to GCN Bowser's Castle? They are two very different tracks.
Gcn bowser castle is more like n64 bowser castle
@@bewearstar9462 I would say GCN is more similar to the Wii version
7 would need a fix as well.
SERIOUSLY WHAT IS KALAMARI DESERT DOING IN THE LEAF CUP?!
Just replace it with sunset wilds and then it's perfect
@@CEOofAustraliaThere’s too much Wii tracks as well for the game that directly follows MKWII. Coconut Mall should honestly have been remade in the MK8 base game, not MK7.
I really like your changes and agree with the majority of them. So you also plan to make a video fixing the MKWii retros?

Good List, But The Only I Would Fix Is Replace Peach Beach Because It's Already In Mario Kart Wii But Overall Good List
@@thehorrormaster8513 But Wii was made 3 years after DS.
However, if we replace it, it would be GCN Luigi Circuit and GBA Shy Guy Beach, and move Shy Guy Beach to the last track.
Choco Island 2 is overhated ngl.
Honestly, like the First Ten Mario Party Games, I feel like the Mario Kart games should just have Original tracks instead of Retro Tracks because they ruin the perfection of Mario Kart Games!
I would replace Vanilla Lake 2 and Wario Colosseum with GCN Mario Circuit and ending it with SNES Rainbow Road.
Oh, I didn't know you were Swedish? You have a good English accent! 😃
11:54 Finally. Someone said it.
