I honestly don't think it's that great. The tracks always feel too short, and one of the great things about Mario Kart is increased chaos as the game goes on - the fact that any bananas dropped in the first lap will stay until lap three if they're not hit, or shells will often keep bouncing around for a while (something they also nerfed). Just doesn't happen when you never drive over the same track again.

The real reason it is so forgotten is because it's a 3DS game, I literally can't cite a franchise where the 3DS entry isn't the forgotten, looked over one. Pokémon XY, Smash for 3DS, Mario 3D land, a link between world, New Super Mario Bros 2, ... I think being one of the most recent handheld just made a lot of RUclips influencers did not really took this console seriously as opposed to the Wii for exemple, and the fact that it is seen as not remembered is amplified by being talked about this way. I wish the console as a whole was more respected because as someone who grew up with it, it has an incredibly solid lineup of game and feels very complete.

In Mario Kart 8, as you say, the gliding is a lot more fixed and you don't really need to do anything in order for it to go to the right place, and the shortcuts which do exist don't actually make much of a difference anymore (Even in the circuits which are in both games).

As for Mario Kart 7, I still think it’s a solid entry, one not talked about much but it serves as the bridge between Wii and Wii U/Switch MK8 and its mechanics today.

I played that thing so much. Even 8 years later in my freshman year (2020) my friends and I were playing Mario kart 7 with everyone owning a different version of the system with me still using my original 3DS. I beat and my first Pokémon game (Pokémon Omega Ruby) on that 3DS, and it was genuinely an astonishing and an impactful experience. It's honestly not a horrible game as the retro track selection is fantastic. It's more that its new tracks (except for its Rainbow Road, Music Park, DK Jungle, Wario Shipyard and the Wuhu tracks) aren't as memorable compared the other games in the series, and the glider mechanic was fine but not game changing in a sense, except for vehicle customisations, which were cool. I think as well when you have a game sandwiched between 2 of the most popular, loved and best selling games in the Mario Kart Series being Wii and 8 Deluxe, its chances of being popular do decrease unfortunately.

Tbh the only teacks I really like are Shy Guy Bazaar and Wario's Shipyard. Bowser's Castle is ok, as is Rainbow Road, but the overall selection is fairly meh.
The retro selection is S-tier in terms of choices, but it does genuinely make some of the tracks worse. Koopa Cape's underwater section is kind of bad compared to the original, and Koopa Troopa Beach's shortcut is pretty awful now. And the fact you can't go in the Kalimari Desert tunnel - it's a small thing, but it's a symptom of the creative failings of the game.
And, I know it's fairly minor, but the soundtrack is really bad, at least for the series. The fact that so much of the music is quotations and plain remixes rather than being original is just a big shame. DK Jungle's is the worst example, being probably the worst official version of Jungle Hijinx there is.
(Wuhu Island's tune being the exception, since that's a reference to an external series, and barely a remix anyway.)

@@voltron77 Even the more themed tracks have kind of bad music though - Piranha Plant Sewers and especially Neo Bowser City in particular (I'd say NBC and DK Jungle have the worst music tracks in series history). Rosalina's Ice World is fine, I'll give you that (even if its theming feels sort of arbitrary).
Music Park is another favourite and I genuinely don't agree - the music itself is, again, fairly meh (especially important on a _music_ stage) and gimmicky, and the gimmick isn't even done interestingly - you just get a scale sound playing that doesn't even particularly fit the overall music. Would have been more fun if there were genuine effort there - maybe the keys individually make sounds as you drive on them? I dunno.
Rock Rock Mountain is another one I'm middling on, but eh, it has its fans.
I'll give you Wuhu Island levels as fun, but they are also three-part levels, which I'm not personally big on either - they lack the increasing chaos of going over the same track multiple times with more items lying around each time. It's an interesting idea, but I just don't think it's worth all that much.
And I think, between our three comments, we've covered pretty much every track. Unless you're gonna claim Daisy Hills is a masterpiece (in any case, it's let down by the music again).

There's almost no dull tracks, it introduces cool ideas such as underwater driving and gliding. It even has shortcuts akin to the insane exploits in Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 64 that not many people know about it. I was constantly playing this game on my 3DS during 2013-2018 before I got my Nintendo Switch in 2019 since my family gave away our Nintendo Wii. MK7, along with Super Mario 3D Land, was my most played game on my 3DS since it was one of the only games I had and I’m surprised I never got bored with playing it 24/7. I never touch my 3DS nowadays since I now have my own Wii and Switch, but it’s still a damn underrated system with a library of really good games that don’t get nearly as much recognition simply because of where they come from.

Mario kart 7 is probably my most played Mario kart game. If not than it’s a close second to Wii. I would play it all the time for minutes son end. It was the first Mario kart where I managed to unlock all the cups on my own, and the second one I unlocked all the characters in after 8. I would play it during every single car ride trying to get gold in every cup, continuing even after getting home. Most of the new tracks absolutely blew me away when I played them for the first time because of just how creative most of them were. I was also pumped to play all the retro track that I recognized from DS and Wii. Playing this game so much it basically transformed me into a Mario Kart 7 pro, and now I can get gold on every cc. Thanks to this, I was able to help a kid who also owned it unlock the last few characters in the game. With him being so happy about me doing that, I’m very thankful that I grew up with this game so much, to the point where I can help younger kids experience the same things I felt playing for the first time.

I was always severely disappointed in Mario Kart 7 because of the lack of Single-Player VS, the #1 most important mode in Mario Kart history! (Tied with Free Run from MKSC)
I mean come on, really! When E3 2011 showcased Mario Kart 3DS, I was really excited for it, got me thinking that MK7 would be above average, when in the actual end, it was (and still is) the complete opposite of that, being below average! When I found out that MK7 lacked Single-Player VS mode, I was very pissed & devastated because not only was that a completely unnecessary downgrade for the Mario Kart series, but also because never prior to Mario Kart 7 was there ever a handheld/portable Mario Kart game that lacked One Course Race modes in Single-Player gameplays! A huge disgrace to Mario Kart's modernization & evolution! Not to mention it was recently patched out of the blue in 2022 without even fixing any of it's actual problems, including the one I just ranted about.
In conclusion, I actually am really happy for people who somehow manage to enjoy this game, but I definitely don't see how Mario Kart 7 could be considered underrated, given how not only was the lack of Single-Player VS Mode a game-defining problem, but MK7 was also actually one of the best-selling 3DS games in the world, that's not necessarily to say that it's overrated though, but still.
And yes, I know that Mario Kart Double Dash also lacked Single-Player VS Mode too, but that's a whole different story that I'm not gonna explain right now, since this comment is already way too long enough as it is.

Like, in 7 the water physics were much more exaggerated than in 8, the floatiness is more present and it can be offputting when going back, and same for the glider which allows you to do some real funky stuff at times, nothing like that to be done in 8 except for motion glider and that electrodrome 200 wr thing.

MK7 is by far my favorite. Neo Bowser City is my fav track of all time and the first person mode was my favorite way to play any game

MK7 is the most skill based Mario Kart, played hundreds of hours on that shit and almost never felt screwed by the COM, other players, or items. I will forever stand by MK7 being the greatest Mario Kart of all time

Another thing I believe this game introduced was tracks that you don’t do laps on. I don’t remember any other MK having a track that you only go through once like Maka Wuhu and this game’s rainbow road.
