  • Hello, everybody hiding in web browsers!
It's me, Paul. I got better after Covid-19, I'm back in the studio and working again at full speed. There's a hot topic everybody is talking about recently and it's called bx True Peak Limiter.
Is it really that good? Is it a game changer for my music? Will I love listening to it, as Plugin Alliance tells me? I decided to give it a go and compare it against Pro-L 2 by Fabfilter and Limitless by DMG Audio.
I was massively, really TOTALLY surprised with the results. Take a look yourself...

Heeey, everybody! You asked me about HQ source files from my test and here they go: www.dropbox.com/sh/5hgq7ak8f6tyoy0/AACCWIeRk6FkzUGn5QmUvCr1a?dl=0
You'll get three masters of the first song, the screenshots for settings used, for those using Cubase/Nuendo - a complete session, so you can dive into the limiters and tweak them yourself, just remember to install trials if you don't have them! I also used YouLean Loudness Meter for matching loudness.
Now you can hear I wasnt joking nor exaggerating. There IS a problem with this limiter and its low end handling, despite what a group of PA believers in one of the Facebook groups, led by Dirk himself, tell me. I left the group, after I've been personally attacked by the members of the group and my professionalism was questioned.
    Have a great, great day!

Until PA gives you an answer instead of just attacking you I won't be purchasing another one of their plugins. The answer is not in the mix, it's in the limiter.

The track is not clean on the other limiters either, the wave form is maxed out to start with, I can hear a bass rumble in the low with a bit of distortion on the track in general. Also the the right channel of the signal/waveform is wider as in louder so one side of the speaker will have more volume. True peak limiting and limiters can only do so much, your track is maxed out as it is. I've got this brainworx limiter and have had no problems with it whatsoever, it sounds open and transparent, certainly not like it's depicted in this video. Again, the track you are demoing is loud going into the limiter. Also your correlation meter is all over the place, so your stereo balance is jumping back and forth like crazy, this will also cause issues for a limiter and for mastering and for any club speakers. It's obvious when the rest of the track kicks in and the bass is subdued in the track, BX limiter sounds similar to the other limiters, certainly not worse than the other limiters. The first golden rule of feeding into a limiter is controlling the bass, any bass heavy material in general, is not great for limiting, that doesn't mean the bass can't be punchy and clear, but it is a huge misconception that bass has to be loud, through pure volume, and with mass of bass added. Any bass signal with cause a limiter and compressor to overreact, there are many tricks used to getting a bass or low frequency material to sit in the mix, yet be punchy and clear.
    ruclips.net/video/oUUOGZjIsJQ/видео.html
Watch this video, which clarify's how the bx limiter should be used, it does take a bit of getting used to, just like any other plugin, each have their own terms and controls. A final note about correlation metering: straight away you can see in this clip I have copied in, how a correlation meter should be functioning, ie the mix, the less it moves the better and the further to the right it is the better the stereo image and phase correlation and LOW end is in the mix, so not wobbling and wavering at great pace from side to side. Oh and, if you're going into the limiter with plus 6db of gain on top of all this, no wonder the limiter is struggling, which is what I see in this video. Other limiters may sound slightly better in this demo, having said all this, knowing how to use each limiter is obviously paramount, and calibrating the BX limiter needs a bit of awareness, something other plugins might not necessarily show. Set the input at zero or one db lower, the set the ceiling to the desired peak , so minus 2 or whatever suits the material and avoids clipping.

I went to a mastering studio where they use monitors of Italian production (Rosso Fiorentino) for 17,000 euros and the difference between L2 and Bx is that the Bx sounds cleaner if used well. the bx should be used in the mastering phase only to smooth the peaks because if you raise the gain it sounds bad but if you use it with the gain at zero just to smooth the peaks it is much cleaner than the L2.

Never had a problem with bx True Peak. It sounds clean and punchy on everything I've tried it on. Sometimes I prefer Ozone Maximizer on some material but only because the song lends itself to it not because of distortion. I think your songs have already been smashed with a limiter so the distortion is already in the file 🤷🏾

I find this so interesting. I am in the process of culling my entire UAD catalog. Some stuff I have been using for years. When I went to remove the UAD Precision Limiter, I could not believe how hard it was to find a comparable limiter that was as clean and transparent. I only use it for Heavy Bass, and Sub Drop Downers. Pro-L artifacted, everything from Waves, native Cubase plugins, Ozone Vintage Limiter. Seriously NOTHING was up to the task. I'm talking 20db+ reduction so that the volume on all frequencies remain consistent. The replacement I landed on to my absolute shock was the super lightweight KiloHearts Limiter!!! What the hell!?! All this time I had no idea this Precision limiter was so damn good. Crazy what you can discover when you put things to the test.

I had the same results you pointed out with the artifacts from this limiter. I found to my ears that the artifacts are less pronounced with the limiter set to Classic mode. Makes some sense since the manual claims that classic mode is "safer" and less aggressive sounding for things like EDM. Interesting though that the limiter is set to Modern mode by default. Ive seen many FF Fanboys get full on, because their there "Precious" has a competitor thats better... Like the new Kirchhoff EQ.. "Yeh Its just as copy of FFPQ3" .LOL
Also, Considering most people these days are "somewhat" mastering at home.. Because , you should never use a limiter on the master , when you send it to a mastering engineer.
As for removing Peaks .. Of course,,,
But as I do a large range of work, and when its not required to send it to my mastering guy (King Willy) , Elevate covers everything. Its bloody Voodoo Code..
After all , Up to 26 independent bands, Same for adaptive gain, Filters, Saturation.,.. ect.. And has then best Gain matching in any plug in ive ever used...Considering all its features..

Bx sounds like it's smoothing things too much and it sounds like it's dipping but it's not giving any punch.
L2 is punchy and up front, but a little too clean for my liking.
Limitless is like L2 but with a bit of smoothing like Bx but done right.
I'm not sure who gave Bx those 5 star reviews but that's just not a good limiter when it artifacts like crazy at -7lufs with the low end. I can only suspect it came from the True Peak technology that shaves off a bunch of transients and smooths everything out but if that's the cost then theyr'e doing it wrong.

It started out sounding odd to me, until I fiddled with it a bit.
PA has the pro audio dsp DSM V3, which is also amazing, on certain sources.
I find that different plugins react differently on different tracks.
Allahso, I demoed the "God Particle", and didn't like it, until I saw a tutorial on how to get the most out of it . . . This guy was saying how he puts it on his 2 Bus and Mixes Into it . . . as opposed to finishing a mix and slapping it on at the end, expecting something miraculous to happen . . . So, I will give the "God Particle" another try . . . I will actually just get it, as I am convinced that it will be useful, once I figure out how best to utilize it.

I'll tell you more: I did some additional, extensive tests after publishing the video, on bx True Peak and some other limiters. Dirk's fans almost ate me alive on his fb group for criticizing the limiter, they were rejecting the reality, trying to prove I did the test wrong and I'm not a pro and all I can say that the hype about this quarter-ready, sluggish limiter - it's pure rubbish. They advertise it as clean sounding, not distorting the low end and these are just untrue statements, pretty easy to verify.
Why are people defending it, why are they buying it? Why is this mastering guy advertising it? I don't know, but all this made me seriously reconsider my future with Plugin Alliance stuff. What I really need from their library is Unfiltered Audio stuff, the rest is not necessary for me.
I'm not into semi-religious cults of any software. I'm a customer who wants to ask a question, send user feedbacks, I expect companies who get my money to answer my questions, instead of talking "you're sooo professional, Pawel :)", "while you're complaining, big names are using it" and endorsing personal attacks, which all comes from the owner of the company. This is beyond my belief, my standards of communications, this is just negative, toxic and passive-aggressive. It's a pure no go for me in the future, period.
The good thing for me is that finally I tested more limiters: A.O.M. stuff, Voxengo stuff, Melda stuff, Newfangled, Softube/Weiss, BUTE, Nugen. My final thought is that DMG Limitless is absolutely stellar and best sounding to my ears, just on anything, starting from tech house tracks, through any pop genres, ending with smooth limiting of film scores. Solid 2nd place went to Softube/Weiss and Melda. Melda's GUIs and design philosophy are different than the others, a little bit more complex and engineer-like, but you can tweak their MB limiter for some absolutely stunning performance.
DMG plugins demand a solid review from me, I'll write to the guys and see if they can grant me some NFR licenses, so I can dig deeper through them.

@@DarkLightYT i bought already the stealth Limiter and in my opinion it is similar to the A.O.M. invisible Limiter... it has the same kind of Algorithm in my opinion and sounds the same... i don't like as much the harmonic section of it, but it is a good one and usable for different kinds. I use it already as Pre Limiter before the last one and it is very transparent in tight mode... also you can combine the stealth with the ozone maximizer at the end... let 2 Limiters do the work instead of 1 ... the slightly steps keeps the dynamic in your song and give you loudness...
But all of that i think i tried many Limiters not all but a lot and all of them i tried except the Weiss and TC Electronic Brickwall ( i found out that only this both are honest ) has the same problem with True Peaks , they are not showing you what is happening in real and it is harder to find a honest Metering tool (also here i tried a hole lot of them) for measure the real time True Peak, cause this is the most important thing in the digital world if you want to get loud and clean without artifacts and unwanted distortion....

@@BelAnuRa Thanks for the reply! :)
I'll test it as 2 limiters combo with Ozone. So far I had good results with Ozone but for very loud masters sometimes I'm getting occasional distortion so it's worth trying. Also, Ozone so far was very effective with True Peak.
I'm 'maximizing' to -0.5dB peak and so far no tool showed me that audio goes beyond that.
So 'good' that I have Stealth Limiter already installed with all the other T-racks plugins ;)

Folia, Two things for you and all others reading:
    1. Make sure you are using the VST3 version of the plugin if you are on a 64 bit system. I had my DAW (FL 20.7.3 64-bit) set to combine VST and VST3 plugins and apparently the VST version of bx_true_peak_Limiter v1.0 didn't function as expected. On my system the correlation meter and solo buttons didn't appear in the VST version, It kept on outputting levels above 0dbFS and audio was very distorted like it was broken. This may be a bug with v1.0 or it may actually be working with the wrong bit depth. HOWEVER, When I used the VST3 version the missing buttons appeared and the bx_true_peak limiter sounds better than all other limiters I own (16 and counting) including the ones you reviewed here. It also translates the best to all other platforms.
    2. You need to understand that you don't use this the same way as a conventional limiter. You don't try to smash your mix to oblivion with it, you can use a compressor or one of the other oversampling limiters to get that sausage sound but then afterwards you use this for mastering to catch your inter sample peaks. The end result should be that you are barely seeing the gain reduction meters moving, probably 1-2 db max. You'll notice that the ceiling knob is logarithmic and 30% of it sets the ceiling above 2.5dB, there is a reason for this. Keep in mind, a true peak limiter is designed to ensure max compatibility between listening environments and not intended for use to improve deficiencies in your mix. FYSA, EVERY 3dB gain reduction is 50% of the source signal. Trying to shave 7dB off of a signal is actually asking it to output 21.1% of the original signal. It's really a fantastic tool when you use it correctly.
In my unbiased opinion, the math in this plugin is a work of art and the Devs spent two years working on the algorithm according to their website, they deserve more support in order to keep great tools like this coming our way and they deserve a fair review. Please be more objective in your review.
    Cheers!
