The way things are going, there's going to be plugins that monitor your pupil dilation and adjusts compression settings to maintain maximum exhilaration
Lool
you shoul copyright that idea!
I suggest we have compression attached to an Apple Watch where it monitors levels of saliva, heart beat and endorphins.
funny you should say that 'they' just made the first wearable AR contact lens! I'm scared.
Why doesn't my phone scan my ear and the shape of it plus a tone test to give me the optimum balance of tones, yet?
It’s good that fabfilter has some competition. Competition gives us better and cheaper products!
True in general but it’s not a de facto law. Sometimes there is collusion in certain industries :-)
That logic is how I first caught the clap…
@@Tyrell_Corp2019 a lot of competition -> companies have to make better and/or cheaper products to stand out and get more customers. I don’t see any case where this is a negative, you can always just ignore the bloat if you feel like a part of the market is oversaturated. Can you provide an example of a case where competition is bad?
agreed!! I am so grateful that the audio industry has insane competition right now in so many areas. Additionally, new players keep entering the market innovating and pushing the boundaries. I don't get how some people say that audio innovation peaked in the analog days lol.
Competition in audio plugins is a sign of healthy and civilized society.
As a digital product designer and a music geek, I love your excitement over the controls and UI of this compressor. Somehwere out there should be a very proud product design team watching this video, congrats.
You rock! This plug-in changes everything. Just remixed a song that was giving me a ton of problems with the drums and the bass, and.. amazing! Thank you!
fun watching you flip out on shapes!
Fantastic comp!!
I bought it for the upgrade price, like $25 or something. A real steal. And you didn't even touch the eq/filter section, which allows you to shape the frequency response of the compression. This is by far my favorite compressor, especially in the sidechain. The ducking transparency is unparalleled (pun intended). The additional plugin states at the top make A/B/C..ing different settings seamless. You can go into mid/side mode and also control the channel linking. They also added a delta button. What more could anyone possibly want?
Thanks for a video! Sounds and looks like an amazing plugin
Check out their sidechain compression. With its spectral pixie dust, it's the cleanest I have ever heard. Duck the bass under the kick with no weird pumping effect. You can also really go crazy with creative use of the transfer curve for expanding / compressing different bands - even if they are below the threshold.
Thanks for sharing
Or just use track spacer
@@eyeque7 for real been doing this forever surprised how people dont know about it
@@georgecain123 I have both. I use Gulfoss when something has screachy highs. Use smart comp mostly for spectral ducking (e.g. kick vs bass). I'm sure they con both be used for both these things but i've gravitated to one or the other for different jobs.
@@eyeque7 yeah I love trackspacer, it's so transparent. Admittedly, I'm still learning compression, but I only use sidechain for effect, not to make space for something.
Informative, entertaining - very useful. Thank you!! One just can´t stop watching this. Enjoy your day! Rolf
Mid/Side! 🎉 Version 1 was already my go to for general compression tasks. The UI and the auto gain function has made it a huge level up not only for workflow but for training your ears. Going to give this a spin tomorrow.
I'm loving your reviews of Sonible's smart plugins! 😄
Wauw, geweldig. ’k ga ’t probeere! Dankje.
love your vids sir. Thanks for reminding me this came out today. I have all their products and love them!
Me literally a week ago: I have every tool I want and need, I won't buy another plugin for a long time
Me now: I knew I shouldn't have clicked on this video
god damnit... my laptop can only handle so much 😭😭
Yep! 🙂
😂
Right! Damn....
Truth!!! 😮😂
Great job Sonible!
Thank you so much! It work!
That UI is really cool, and spectral compression is a nice touch.
Spectral ducking is best ducker on the market at the moment.
Tran clam
Bought it ,, versatile and very useful comp! I loved it immediately ..
One of my favourite compressor is Brainworx Opto. It's like La2a, but also it has regulation for speed of transients.
Combine Brainworx Opto with Kazrog True iron, there is an emulation of a very early la2a transformer in there. Amazing combination ❤️
I'm already a Sonible fan. Bought their limiter, EQ, comp, reverb bundle after watching your previous reviews and my mixing and mastering results are way better than I ever achieved with Ozone. So thanks for that :). I'll definitely upgrade to comp 2 after seeing this video - your enthusiasm is infectious!! Thanks!
Thanks for sharing
Ozone 9's low end focus module sounds amazing tho.
Zone 10 looks cool, but well, i found some magic VST chains recently, so... i'm not even gonna demo it, for now i guess
Also when it comes to Izotope, RX is the best audio editor nowaydays, as far as i know
The part beneath the threshold bar is the expander/upwards compressor ratio, not a limit for how low you can set the threshold.
This one is soooooo great! Unbelievable!! I tested it with vocals bass drums.. amazing workflow and sound!
I am definitely going to know Compression better, thank you for this video.
This is how digital tools leave analog behind in possibilities, progress! It’s amazing to have all these options. And while flexibility and powerful tools are great, I seem to be lost about what use cases actually require this amount of flexibility. Like use the tool with the end goal in mind, over use the tool cause its powerful. What a great time to play with audio ! Thanks!
It seems to be a time in the world where anybody who has stuck with a craft is going to see some really cool advancements in the tools to accomplish our goals. The only ones who will really appreciate these tools is the ones who have been working with the slower tools for a while. Probably the same feeling when someone came out with the nail gun after using a hammer for however long.
At the same time some of the character from analog is extremely beautiful.
Idk what exactly the curves are that you were so excited about but it was contagious and now I’m excited too! Kudos, also cool nail color today. 💪👏👏
We will need a in depth review of this in a month or so
I've been wanting a visual compressor exactly like this since forever!
Really nice. I actually had the idea once of building a compressor with configurable attack/release/gain reduction curves, and I was always annoyed by the fact that I couldn't really see/know what the Pro-C „styles“ were actually doing. I guess it totally makes sense to do something like that.
use your ears
That control layout is so cool, people actually can know what it's doing.
Yay!!! Great plugin
Excellent. Was just coming to YT to look for a vid on this (I own V1 of the comp). I wonder if the AI in the comp has been sharing learning with the YT algo AI cause your video was the first to pop up. Thanks for your always enthusiastic review style.
Great video title! 😁
Thanks!
I am trying to get involved in music. I am here by myself in Tennessee doing so. I bought this laptop and learned all I needed about lyrics; now, I am trying to compose my own music for my songs to flow. YOu are going to be a big help in making sure my compositions flow to the ear like peter pan to a window.
Love your reactions 😂😂😂👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙌🏻🙌🏻
Melda Production compressors have all of this, including the shape control for ages already.
Melda plugins are the GOAT in the right hands.
IMHO his interfaces are not his strong point, and for me this is a barrier since my eyes tire - but he's definitely a genius when it comes to audio programming.
Ya, Melda are bosses. But it pretty tough to use their plugins to theri full potential. Not very user friendly, but their are gueniuses, no doubt. And the sound and potential is just amazing
This is a lot like Maximus, graph based compression is actually quite old, Image Line did it years ago, but this looks interesting
Yup, this looks like a more refined take on what Maximus does visually.
Sadly WSS, Slate and a lot of people and companies who claim to be professionals don't care about FL Studio.
@@intranexine8901 That was meant to be "don't care about". What I'm saying is that being amazed by the graphed based compressor as if it's something revolutionary stems from being ignorant of FL Studio.
@@jetlag1488 ah, yea, true, it's quite underrated I guess
I never managed to make Maximus sound good. I call bullshit.
Put Smart compp, listen input, coose preset, playback, adjust to taste, boom. It sounds like the best analog gears. I bought FL Studio for 500 buck btw, tey do really good plugins. But smart:comp 2 is unmatchable at what it does. Perdiod
5:19 "cooool"
like a kid seeing some badass toys for the first time :D
I can definetely comprehend your amazement!
i just like seeing you freak out in the best way 😁this plugin is insane!
The facial expressions when he freaks out...............
I'm very much a novice at production, but my major is computer science and I have to agree this excellent user interface design. Hopefully it doesn't come with much of a cpu hit though. Having a more interactive, informative, and elaborate visual interface does expect a lot more from the cpu than a static display with some knob pictures that rotate in place when you drag them. And gives the programmers a second item they have to try and optimize after they have a build of the UI that fully functions as intended to begin with. It's impressive when they pull it all off.
Well, if implemented correctly, it does expect much more from the GPU than from CPU. Let's hope they're using the right rendering pipeline.
I have their Smart EQ3 and their Smart Limiter 2 and I might have to try this out
Frankly, Smart Comp 1 already was a no brainer tot me. It's been my go-to compressor since I got it. Of course I have La2a, Fairchild, 1176 for their character, but as a starting point, Smart Comp is hard to beat. The new version I haven't seen yet, but at €28 upgrade fee that's only a matter of time. Brilliant stuff
gotta love hearing someone geek out over something they like its priceless
thanks!
Damn that UI is incredible! Sonible is always top notch with their UI! I was coming to check out the AI stuff, but the UI won lol. I'll have to pick this up at some point. Not in a huge rush though as my current workflow is great and I don't see this fulfilling an urgent need I have. I feel like, lately, a few times every year a company innovates with a plugin that does amazing thing i've always wanted. It is kinda hard to keep up. to learn the new workflows to make things easier always trying to keep up with tech makes things less efficient if you gotta spend a few hours with the newest greatest thing to save a few minutes every session.
I had already bought it before you even released this video 😅 but sonible just makes incredible good stuff! And as owner of smart comp 1 I had the chance to upgrade and just paid like 28€!
Same here 😁
Same here.
Yep same here.
Sonible has been very CPU hungry in the past, whereas FabFilter is insanely light. How does this compare?
Great actually! Fabfilter Pro-C 2 has not been updated in a while. Let's see what they release with 3?
They did recent update to most of their plugins and they run way way faster now. So fast that I replaced all my other plugins with Smart comp, eq and limit. It seems like they got rid of some slow bug in the code.
Depends on the plug-in and what features you are using. On my CPU - an i7-8559u - Smart EQ3 in full dynamic mode is still pretty heavy at ~1.1% CPU (0.5% CPU in non-dynamic mode), and Smart Limiter a bit less at 0.7 to 0.9% CPU. Smart Comp has never used more than 0.1-0.2% CPU for me, which is comparable to Pro C-2 with oversampling disabled. So IMO, only Smart Comp can be seen as really good in that regard. The other ones are okay for use here and there, but I wouldn't use Smart EQ 3 as my go-to EQ for every track in a project. A great and lightweight go-to EQ shouldn't have to use more than 0.2% on my CPU IMO. That's a great thing about Reaper stock plug-ins, they use about 0.03 to 0.05% CPU!
@@nj1255 Jeez EQ on every track, all that phasing.
@@hearmenow909 Not that I use EQ for every track in a project (although if I had to I would), but why would there be excessive "phasing"? Are you speaking from experience or is it just something you've heard in a RUclips video? You don't get any phase issues by EQing individual tracks of separate sources. Most of the time you don't even get any audible problems when you EQ several tracks of the same recorded source. If you would run into a problem you can always use a phase-linear EQ, but 90% of the time it's not necessary.
Thank you
Someone please give this guy IL maximus. The way he was shocked about shapes and all
and it's already 15 years old :D
@@NoNameLeft1500 truly! Image Line can be a very good company if you know the ins and outs.
Does this have a low latency mode, or is the processing not really adding any latency? I'm finding with a lot of these newer plugins, because they're doing so much clever processing, they tend to add a lot of latency , and I don't like using them very much while I'm in the production stage.
This looks like a bit of a game changer, going to check out this plugin today.
Argh, I am so tempted to buy. But I will wait to see if I truly need...
Im sold! Buying asap
Nails looking fresh
Smart comp 1 is incredible. Can't imagine what this upgrade will do.
This plugin is insane. I just got a few hours ago and it puts so much power at users fingertips that its ridiculous. Its literally the one compressor that replaces all other plugin compressors, and the quality of the algorhitms is phenomenal.
While you can set it to replicate behaviour of character compressors like LA-2A, 1176 it cannot replicate their saturation, the main reason why i'm using them, not to say it is bad in any way. In fact, on the contrary, it is one of the best ,,clean" compressors created and i cannot wait to use it on my mix bus today!
@@adriandonal Yeah, I don't think plugins will replace hardware any time soon - and hardware is just more fun to work with, which is just as important for the productivity.
Yes!
ok im sold
Melda multiband compressor beats everything is out there right now, 1 band, multiband, spectral, tonal, downwards, upwards etc in just one single plugin
I don't understand why Melda gets so overlooked. Their stuff is amazing. Like it is hospital equipment or somethihg lol. Perhaps it is the marketing?
@@olibarahosasa1137 to be honest I discovered them a year ago and their interfaces are so ugly that made me almost give up but man the options it has beats everything lol
@@olibarahosasa1137 it’s definitely there interfaces of there plugins are terrible looking, but the plugins are insanely good
This, and I'm glad Wytse noticed this comment.
Yeah but Melda is limited as a free version, so to get access to all of their stuff, you gotta buy these plugins. 500 bugs for this collection is a price tag, but yeah they did things years ago, before it was even a thing.
Amazing
Adjustable attack and release curves is something i have been asking for for years. so it finally happened. somebody made a compressor with that feature.
Sonible smart EQ and limiter are pretty damn good, I would imagine their game changers for many : )
Haha! Decent kick in FabFilters nuts :)) Kinda good, those guys need to pull themselves together and start pushing the boundaries just how they used to!
6:00 eargasm!
Hi Wytse, the Plugin Alliance Dynamic Spectrum Mapper has "shape" presets as well (a lot) but is far from user friendly. It takes a while to get used to it and dial in good results but I use it (as a semi-pro hobbyist) from time to time. Thanks for the review, Patrick Peeters
@@lespaul2550 Ooops, my mistake, it's a Plugin Alliance product. Sorry!!
Maximus from FL Studio can do this with points and shape from long time ago...
I'm putting a bit of money in my plugins... I really hope you are sincere about how good this one is, as I will be buying it in a few minutes... It seems really great from what I understand about compression, and I am hoping it helps me learn exactly how compression works, as you said it can help you learn compression. Thanks for the vid!
Downloaded.. boy it sounds nice! I like the dirty dial! I have the first one which i didn’t use a lot but i’m thinking this will get lots of use.. for $24..! 😀
What's the latency ?
Sale is over-- glad I snapped it up immediately after your review for $24, now $89
Sometimes I get worried when I see a plugin has amazing UI/UX. Often times the budget goes into a product to look nice, but while the sound really is the main target. Not sure if this is the case here- all I know is not to be sucked into a polished looking plugin but a polished sound first.
I did too. Q3 was my mainstay for dozens of mixes, but the others, while functional, never thrilled me. No mojo? I had the whole collection. They didn't survive my recent shootouts and now they're all gone. But more than the compressor, Sonible limiter does a ton of work for me.
Very interested, does anyone know if it is M1 native? I’m sick of using Rosetta.
does it work with my smart thermostat though?
Muito bom sou do Brasil e sempre vejo os seus reviews
It's actually great news that other plugs are starting to catch up to Fabfilter. (Although tbh I never loved Pro-C)
Wtf ? How can you not like pro C?!
@@anthemsjam love pro C for non color compression jobs.
@@anthemsjam oh, "never loved" is pretty relative here! I'm comparing it with my love for Saturn 2 and Pro-MB :) Pro-C is still great! Also, subjectively, I prefer compressors that colour the sound.
sonible changing the game, amazing gui's i just love their stuff.
throw your money at them! all the power to them
could someone explain the shape/graph on the left?
Smart comp 2 is amazing, the sound is incredible, you dont have to check the threshhold that much compared to smart comp 1 and it makes me feel like Im using real analog compressors.. the only thing is that Ive never been able to use the spectral compression, it just makes thing sound "untight", I guess white sea dude is right maybe on some source where a sound is messing the reduction. Anyway best AI ever, and maybe best compression tool ever. Be aware of sounds with reverb and delay (tails) on them cause it will over-compress it heavily, tho my workaround is to get him to analyze the sound before the reverb or delay start.
Absolute game changing plugins
I'm curious to know the CPU Load?
what exactly I am looking in histogram?
Dammm. I see what the compressor is doing!!!
It looks like it can do upward compression as well. Is that the case?
what does the graph left show? I dont get it...
i wouldn't remove pro-c2 because of this. i mean sure it's cool to be able to be really precise about the shape of the curve, but pro-c2 gives you a lot of shapes already and they are tuned well enough for most situations and enable a fast workflow. not saying this plugin looks like it has a bad workflow, but ff is still just super fast. you don't even have to wait for an AI to do its thing. just dial in the knobs and boom, done
They have the same presets as Fab has, so workflow is just as fast. Consider a price comparison. Not saying I would get rid of something you already have that works well in your workflow, though.
external in the mierder rate ?
I just got it after watching the video and playing with the demo for like 20 minutes.
hence on here a month later. thanks for making feel normal again.
lol/ Its rare to see you this excited about a plugin. I have the first version of this but only use it on occasion )usually on bass and kick since I have the most trouble with those) I have all of their smart plgins and use some more than others. Smart limiter I use all the time now. I'm still deciding if I'm going to upgrade to this one but after seeing your demo I'm leaning more towards the upgrade.
Melda FREE compressor has custom shapes too btw.
Melda will be happy with the large number of recommendations in this comment section.
Can you put spectral-filtered signal into the sidechain? That would be killer
Looks great. Sounds great. But… I’m not ready to let my Pro-C go yet.
IL Maximus has this "shape" modelling for like forever. Also it's multiband. You should check this out.
Bought all of Sonible stuff, having all of them already cracked, also Ozone and FabFilter. Sonible deserves all my money. They just did the best plugins out there, AS IT MUST BE. If they do top notch plugs, then I'm happy to pay.

Hahahhahah
Is there an upgrade for those of use that already own smart:comp ?

Oh carp! I spent the morning going back and forth between a mix with smartComp 2 and a mix with my Shadow Hills Vandergraph. I'm sure I could make the Vandergraph sound as good or better with a few more years of practice but right now, smartComp 2 has the skills I don't and the little extra dynamic range and clamping down at exactly the right moment gives that pleasing musical glue. Damn! It's one thing to mothball your copy of Pro C, it's another to put a $2500 compressor in the closet! It's possible that this is the tool and the moment that triggers a mass exodus to ITB.
I'm cool with that, cheap secondhand outboard gear rush incoming? hahaha
@@lewho114 I hope so! Still need tracking gear and it's gotten way too expensive in the last two years.
Just want to update this: After two more days of comparing, yes smartComp definitely gives a more detailed and crunch in all the right parts. However, there is something that the Vandergraph adds or brings out that is not there in the smartComp mix. Just makes me smile wider! So for now, analog wins. I bought smartComp and will use it where needed, a lot of places but yeah, holding on that gear.
