It was always weird how they put a random Hiker in the middle of the Elite 4 in RBY, glad Game Freak fixed this and added Bruno from GSC to the remakes.
It is unintuitive and arguable, but I see the reasoning behind SonicBoom not being sound-based. Sound-based moves appear to all be effects caused directly by sound the Pokemon produces, i.e. Sing is a lullaby that causes the opponent to sleep. A sonic boom *is* a sound, but it's the sound of a shock wave caused by motion at super-sonic speeds. A lot of the time when people say "sonic boom" they are referring to the shock wave and not the sound. Voltorb isn't producing a sound directly, it's just moving so fast that the shock wave it creates damages its opponent. Soundproof doesn't block it because it's not the sound that damages Porygon. It's the shock wave, the super-sonic motion, that damages Porygon. ...I think?
I think it comes down to the description of the move. Boomburst specifically states that the opponent is attacked with "terrible, explosive sound," while Sonic Boom's description has never used the word "sound" once. It's always been described as a shock wave. Essentially, the only thing pointing to sound is Sonic Boom's name, which rarely refers to a sound itself; sonicboom refers to the act of breaking the sound barrier, which produces a loud noise as a byproduct. All of which is to say: I feel that Sonic Boom as a sound-based move and Sonic Boom as a non-sound-based move are equally intuitive.
Well... sound is a wave of energy travelling through a medium, a shock wave is the same thing just a lot more intense; the distinction between them is magnitude so I think it should count as sound based personally
10:10 for normal types with psychic and fighting coverage: the Jigglypuff and Clefairy lines get both psychic and brick break starting in Gen 3, as do Spinda, Snorlax, and Togetic. And the Blissey line, but brick break isn’t going to do much of anything for her. Togekiss in gen 4 also gets Aura Sphere by move relearner, and interestingly has Extrasensory by default only from the Togepi egg in HGSS.
Additionally, in Platinum, Snorlax gets access to a better Psychic type move in the form of Zen Headbutt via the Route 212 Move Tutor for 4 Blue Shards and 4 Yellow Shards. These are available during normal play but require a small amount of backtracking.

I’ve always loved porygon! I remember trying so hard to make this thing work after I grinded the money to buy the coins for so long in blue version. Fun fact in RBY competitive porygon has a niche as a great body slam switch in to all non-amnesia snorlax sets and is one of the very few pokemon that can beat it 1v1 reliably and force it to use self destruct.
It does not BEAT Snorlax 1v1 because Porygon doesn't really do anything in return to Snorlax, but it forces the Snorlax user into an awkward situation where they either have to stay in and waste Body Slams and eventually Rest from chip damage, or swap and risk a teammate being paralyzed. It's a good check to Snorlax, but it is not a counter.
My favourite hyper specific porygon tech is in the Leaf green nuzlocke hack Garbage Green, which, in addition to making you use trash pokemon, nerfs the broken moves. In particular, all setip mobes have 1 pp. However, porygon gets sharpen and /recycle/, which with a leppa berry is one of the only ways to reach +6 attack. The result is that, with some support, you can sweep lorelei setting up on cloyster, agatha setting up on gengar with switch stalling and a steel type and i wanna say theres some niche vs lance as well

Another interesting thing to consider: are there any gym leaders, Elite Four members, champions, or other major characters with a Porygon or its evolutions? I can’t think of any, though I’m not very knowledge about Gen 5 and beyond. The video game team could’ve chosen to force the issue regarding the anime’s avoidance of Porygon by having a very important trainer have a Porygon or one of its evolutions, but Porygon never reappeared after the infamous episode it debuted in.
@@SnailShoes My understanding based on what I’ve read from Takeshi Shudo and other people involved with the anime at the time is that the staff of the anime felt very badly about the incident to the point that feelings were still raw years after the incident. Perhaps the reason Porygon never reappeared and why its evolutions never appeared has less to do with blaming Porygon for the incident and more to do with the anime staff not wanting to be reminded of the incident, kind of like Brock’s feelings about Professor Ivy….”Don’t mention that name!”
Fun Fact: VGC-Players know that Dowload only activates once when Porygon enters a battle. So you won't setup over a battle by that unfortunately :( But even without a full setup, Porygon and P2 are performing very well - in VGC and solo-challenges. Keep up the great work, Scott! :)

A Sonic Boom is the sound wave caused by something breaking the sound barrier. Even if you can’t hear it being too close will hurt. Think about fighter jets breaking windows by flying too close. Regarding pure Normal types with Psychic + Fighting coverage, when you eventually do Spinda in Platinum, Spinda can learn Drain Punch via TM from Maylene and learns Psybeam via level up. For even more perfect coverage, it learns Sucker Punch via level up as well to hit Ghost types. If playing in Emerald, Spinda learns Brick Break via TM as well (a bit later in the game is not as cool). A lot of Normal types can do this in Generation 9 as well, but its cool to see such a terrible pokemon have a genuine underrated niche in solo playthroughs.
How come you don't do level up training using the versus seeker? You can select which trainers you battle to make sure you get the proper EVs and a ton more cash to buy vitamins.
Wigglytuff and Snorlax can learn Brick Break, Focus Blast, Body Press and Drain Punch as well as Psyshock and Zen Headbutt. Zangoose can learn Low Kick, Low Sweep, Brick Break, Aura Sphere, Reversal, Focus Blast, and Close Combat as well as Zen Headbutt
Few thoughts: In one of your recent crystal videos, you updated the game to only see you have 1 pokemon so they don’t waste moves on mean look. Could you not do the same thing here (for consistencies sake) to prevent having to play around Whirlwind/Roar when ostensibly you are only using 1 mon? Also, with a grain of salt, is the Bruno strategy potentially to use Substitute to set up Sharpen boosts without getting speed dropped? This should allow you to OHKO the Hitmonchan much sooner. As always, appreciate the content!
By definition Sonic Boom is a sound that come together with shock wave when something break the sound barrier. So my guess is that what damage you isn't a sound but the shock wave that come with it, hence not a sound move.
10:03 I’m not sure if this is what your asking, but Tauros in from Gen 4 learns Zen Headbutt but the only fighting move it gets it Rock Smash. However, it can learn earthquake which also covers rock and steel Also, Gen 4 Munchlax gets Zen Headbutt as an egg move (not sure on your policy on those) and access to Brick Break and earthquake through TMs
Thanks for overcoming your PTSD (Porygon Traumatic Stress Disorder 😄) for us Scott! I've been wondering. There is a 20% chance of rolling a status. I imagine it then rolls 1/3 of which status it will inflict. If you fight like a fire type, is there a chance it rolls "burn" and then "fail" to inflict a status because it can't burn?
Porygons conversion would be great in black and white where you can use tms indefinitely. Constantly being able to change moveset to perfectly fit the next major fight would be amazing for it.
Girafarig is a Normal/Psychic type. It learns Psychic moves in every generation its available and also gets Double Kick, a Fighting type move, as an egg move from Gen IV onwards.
a pretty large number of normal types have access to reliable fighting and psychic coverage, actually. Just in the kanto dex alone, Wigglytuff, Clefable, Chansey, and even Snorlax get both Brick Break and Psychic. The addition of stuff like Zen Headbutt in gen 4 added a couple more gen 1 normal types to that list like Tauros and Lickitung. And, while it can't learn any Psychic moves, Dodrio's combination of Flying STAB and Fighting moves like Low Kick provide similar coverage.
A Sonic Boom isn't just a sound, never struck me as odd that it wasn't immuned. It's not something like being sung to where if you can't hear it you won't experience it. Arguing otherwise you might as well argue that they should be immune to Thunder as well.
I think the logic is that Sonicboom is a concussive wave generated by sound, and Soundproof is about not being able to hear/not affected by the audio itself.
31:45 When the enemy pokemon uses whirlwind, but you have only one pokemon in your party, doesn't the move fail? Could you have deposited all but Porygon into the PC before starting the elite 4, then using Sharpen until you're +6?
If you deposited your HM friends, the final pidgeot wouldn't be able to use whirlwind, correct? I wonder if that would help with set up. Also, Porygon is my favorite Pokemon, and I'm SO glad it's getting the spotlight 😍
for the ability download, its a once per battle effect, not a once per enemy pokemon effect, so youll only get one boost at the start of the battle ^^; its still a fun ability, but its not going to give you insane levels of setup on long battles
Well, when it comes to Normal-types that are in FRLG and that get Psychic- and Fighting-type coverage... I can only think of Wigglytuff, Clefable, Chansey, and Snorlax. They all get Brick Break AND Psychic. Clefable might be your best bet for that idea.
For normal types with psychic and fighting coverage, Wigglytuff gets Submission in gen 1, Dynamic Punch in gen 2, Brick Break in gen 3 and 4, and Psychic in all of them. Maybe it's time to give the sentient cream puff another go?
I've been playing a randomizer recently and managed to get a Lanturn early on. Apparently the randomizer software has a sense of humor because it replaced Illuminate with Stench, making Lanturn less likely to cause wild battles instead.
10:55 about that, i think sonic boom damage it's not about the sound emitted as much as a shockwave like when something goes supersonic. Think of a plane flying low altitude, the sonic boom would hit you regardless of your perception of sound.
Off the top of my head, Togekiss in Gen 4 gets Aura Sphere at level 1 and Psychic by TM, though I don't recall how accessible that TM is in Platinum version, so that's a Normal Type with those two coverage types - of course it's also part Flying so the Psychic coverage against Fighting-type is less valuable there. "I can't set up to +3 and kill it before it uses Whirlwind because it's faster" - don't Whirlwind and Roar have negative priority? Or is that a change in a later generation?
Is there a move reminder in Fire Red? Remembering conversion or Conversion 2 for Bruno would be really useful. Forget Sharpen in exchange for converting to a type that resists the fighting type against hitmonchan, recover your health back up against it, and then take down the team with Psychic from there
It was always weird how they put a random Hiker in the middle of the Elite 4 in RBY, glad Game Freak fixed this and added Bruno from GSC to the remakes.

I really like the intro's for the gym leaders and elite 4. Stylish!
Conversion is really good on porygon as you can get stab on your moves instead of waiting for the enemy to change your type
A Scott video on a Wednesday? Let's gooooooo
Few thoughts:
In one of your recent crystal videos, you updated the game to only see you have 1 pokemon so they don’t waste moves on mean look.
Love the porygon line...Porygon 2 is a great mon! Very versatile
I was hoping for a Porygon 2 round league rematch, but amazing work as always
By definition Sonic Boom is a sound that come together with shock wave when something break the sound barrier.
So my guess is that what damage you isn't a sound but the shock wave that come with it, hence not a sound move.
Remember to hydrate everyone
10:03 I’m not sure if this is what your asking, but Tauros in from Gen 4 learns Zen Headbutt but the only fighting move it gets it Rock Smash. However, it can learn earthquake which also covers rock and steel
Also, Gen 4 Munchlax gets Zen Headbutt as an egg move (not sure on your policy on those) and access to Brick Break and earthquake through TMs
I'm getting fun flashbacks to the porygon race :D
Thanks for overcoming your PTSD (Porygon Traumatic Stress Disorder 😄) for us Scott!
I've been wondering.
There is a 20% chance of rolling a status.
I imagine it then rolls 1/3 of which status it will inflict.
If you fight like a fire type, is there a chance it rolls "burn" and then "fail" to inflict a status because it can't burn?
"I survive in Yellow"
Silly Scott, this is FireRed. The Magneton is part-Steel, for the record.
I made it to 40:36. And no scott, YOURE INCREDIBLE.
a pretty large number of normal types have access to reliable fighting and psychic coverage, actually.
I have to assume “Sonic Boom” is part of Surge being a pastiche of Guile from Street Fighter.
If you deposited your HM friends, the final pidgeot wouldn't be able to use whirlwind, correct? I wonder if that would help with set up. Also, Porygon is my favorite Pokemon, and I'm SO glad it's getting the spotlight 😍
Oh hey, Bruno became a trainer.
Uh no, not the "P-Word". I've had a bad history with this thing.
for the ability download, its a once per battle effect, not a once per enemy pokemon effect, so youll only get one boost at the start of the battle ^^; its still a fun ability, but its not going to give you insane levels of setup on long battles
Clefable is slept on. Did a solo nuzlocke with it, no problem
For normal types with psychic and fighting coverage, Wigglytuff gets Submission in gen 1, Dynamic Punch in gen 2, Brick Break in gen 3 and 4, and Psychic in all of them. Maybe it's time to give the sentient cream puff another go?
Trace is one of my favorite abilities. It’s weird the number of times you can pick up a relevant type immunity or similar with it.
I've been playing a randomizer recently and managed to get a Lanturn early on. Apparently the randomizer software has a sense of humor because it replaced Illuminate with Stench, making Lanturn less likely to cause wild battles instead.
I would double check but whirlwind may have lower priority.
It does, starting in Gen. 2.
This video made me want to see week where he does one pokemon thru all the games he plays, like porygon week or something
I think you misunderstood download. Download triggers on you entering battle, not the opponent sending something out.
Scott are you gonna start doing second runs for FR/LG? You started doing it in emerald this year which is a much bigger game
Is there a move reminder in Fire Red? Remembering conversion or Conversion 2 for Bruno would be really useful. Forget Sharpen in exchange for converting to a type that resists the fighting type against hitmonchan, recover your health back up against it, and then take down the team with Psychic from there
That dome fossil reference….
Was that a MDB nod?
Whirlwind has a -6 priority, meaning that you can in fact set up to +3 and then OHKO without getting switched out
10:00 clefable, chansy, wigglytuff amd snorlax can learn psychic and submission. If you count rest and seismic toss than there are more options.
@scott's Thoughts Well Stantler in gen 4 and up dosnt get fighting but it gets Energy ball (grass) stantler has alot of covrage....like alot.
I wonder if adding a small fin to the guide will help.
This has me excited for porygon 2 in crystal someday. The evolution line is in my top 5
You don't have to worry about Bruno's Onix using Roar if you deposit your other pokemon.
