      No wait! Surely you need to consider Porygon’s fighting type weakness? An untimely submission or seismic toss could ruin your Snorlax counter!

    • @dr.dylansgame5583
      @dr.dylansgame5583 2 года назад +45

      @order-sol's last brain cell and submission is almost funnier considering how garbage that move would be in that matchup since it doesn't have that great of a base power. And the recoil would just chip snorlax even more with paralysis and freeze looming around to boot. Even if it had curse back then it would still be risky and without leftovers that leaves it kind of in a bad spot.

      I don't think it's a good idea to have another normal type pokemon on your team, you should load up on some fighting-resists to balance your weaknesses, some poison type mons should do the trick!

    • @harryf9885
      @harryf9885 Год назад +7

      @@herrabanani it is still an upside because it’s snorlax you are hoping to make explode, One of the big 3 and on every team. Unless you are totally insane and took Snorlax/Tauros/Chancy off your team to put Porygon on it, The better Pokémon you could be using (one of the psychics, Rhydon, Zapados etc.) still would have been worse than Snorlax, and if that Pokémon could force a trade with Lax like Porygon sometimes can, it would do it (like you are trading your rook for their Queen). I do agree that the fact u can switch it into debilitating one per game status conditions or other booms because it is often useless is not something that makes it good, more like it’s a fact about gen 1 games that makes having one gimmicky low tier on your otherwise strong team more viable. This is because even in the games/matchups where it doesn’t do anything it can be used as a dedicated status/boom sponge, which is much better than Porygon could do facing an amnesia or reflect Lax team if those mechanics weren’t in the game. Porygon is just as good at dying to a predicted explosion or being frozen or taking a thunderwave for your Tauros as any other Pokémon, so if you used it to fulfill that function in a matchup where it can’t do its thing, you didn’t lose too much from not running a better Pokémon. Also 32 pp of recover does make it pretty good at getting itself frozen vs. Chansey, though they can just twave you if they want the chance to freeze something else.

    The competitive utility of the Porygon family is just bizarre, fitting for their designs. I remember in Gen VII OU, when Z-moves were in play, Porygon-Z had a legitimate nieche with Z-Conversion, getting an omni-boost and becoming whatever type you need it to be, usually Ghost. It's unfortunately too predictable to be an OU staple, but that didn't stop it from hanging out with the cool kids in UUBL (yes, I consider them cool kids; I like them better than most of the OU bullies).
    And then you have Porygon2, being the most annoying piece of shit in every generation it gets to participate in.

      @@cyanideytcuriousseadoggo is there any proof that gen 1 miss is even a glitch? because it seems like people just dont like it and therefore assume its a glitch. i dont think its that unreasonable for every move except swift [which is supposed to always hit] to have a small chance of missing, when you consider the fact that red and blue were not intended to have multiplayer and it was tacked on at the end of development. just seems like a [bad] design choice to me

    I just realized why Porygon is so bad: it’s a joke about how the creators were ostracized for making a gameboy game in the age of 3D graphics, so in frustration the creators made Porygon (which in Japanese is pronounced identically to polygon) as a 3D Pokemon in a 2D game. And they hated polygonal games so “Porygons suck”

    This is why I love hearing about competitive Pokemon even though I don't really play it myself. I just really love the random stuff like the Body Slam glitch and how it shook up the meta.
    I don't know what it is; I just find things like that fascinating. The fact that you've got this pretty well developed meta being played on emulators for years...and then one day someone's like "oh, shit...hold up. RBY is even more glitchy than we thought..." and that just changed so much. Made Porygon have a niche, destroyed Golem's viability...other things I'm not thinking of just now...I just love it.
    I also love things like the way Flareon got shafted by being a Pokemon with a massive attack stat but only special STAB.

    Seeing the text on the thumbnail for this video sent it into a Schrodinger space for me: either it was dramatic, perhaps from the perspective of an onlooker witnessing an unassuming Porygon commit this terrifying feat, and whispering in disbelief, "...It's decent?", or incredibly comedic by undercutting every other element on the image with a flat, entirely meh, "It's decent." The lack of a shoutpole is, I think, a key part of what sold the two simultaneously.
    Excellent work; no notes.
    (And hey, good luck at Melee Thing!)

    7:50 correction - the chance of not getting paralyzed in 24 Body Slams is 0.019%, not 0.0019%.
    Also, just for fun, the chance of avoiding para in the same scenario but *accounting for* the 1/256 miss chance is 0,0199%, as opposed to 0,0192% when ignoring misses. It's honestly even more insignificant than what I expected; then again, idk what I was thinking lol

    Edit: About what you said that novices must NOT use Porygon: that's because they need to understand what every single big threat in OU does, how to counter them and how to build a team. After that, they need to learn as much as they can about the meta. Only then, they can adventure with Lapras, Golem, Porygon, Persian, Victreebel.

    Hey! Just a random viewer here who's very interested in your Pokemon videos about early metagames. Your videos on Glitchmons and Learnsets probably being the most fun for me- mostly because they're very hypothetical ideas that are interesting to think about.
    Something similar to that which I would love to see you tackle is maybe a video on a hypothetical review of how the scrapped/reworked pokemon from the Spaceworld 1997 demo of Gold and Silver would be like in a competitive setting.
    I'm asking that you at least look into the idea because it's probably the last thing people think about when it comes to that demo, especially because I couldn't find any easily accessible documentation on any of the pokemon's learnsets. I think looking at every cut fully evolved 'mon from the GS beta would be sick as fuck.

    As someone who's never gone back and played the original Gen 1 Pokémon games, I can't stress enough how surreal it is to hear the phrase "Gengar's damage output is much lower than Tauros," around the 9:22 mark of this video.
    Like damn, that really goes to illustrate just how far Tauros's fall from grace was; it went from being a stronger sweeper than Gengar to a complete nothing of a Pokémon that you'd barely ever choose for even casual playthroughs of the games from Gen 4 onwards.
    Let's hope it gets some love in Scarlet and Violet with an evolution/regional form like people have been speculating since that last trailer.

    Kinda reminds me of Quagsire (On teams which aren't full Stall), but also reminds me of what alot of Porygon2 sets became.
    I still remember managing to fully max out a Porygon2's HP and Defense back in Gen6 and being able to stall out Mega Lopunny of all pokemon. Their High Jump Kick just somehow didn't do enough damage to even get in 2HKO range. Then again this was Wifi Battles. I'm sure if it was Showdown there would be some issues.
