So far the few videos I watched are very cool and also is very easy to understand the explanation. Even if I can talk Guoyu by myself I didn't exactly know these differences very clearly but your video helped a lot, thank you so much. Thank you. I am a beginner (I am french) and I follow an online course, which is perfect otherwise. But I wondered why the words Zhonguo and Zhongwen, and even Hanyu (sorry I can't type the Pinyin accents on the keyboard I'm using). It was not really explained so I googled it and finally, not only I found the difference between these 3 last words, but I found out a 4th one, which is in fact the language I'm learning : Putonghua ! Thank you for all these explainations.

    Great video telling the history and differences! I remember when I visited Shanghai back in 2012 and in 2013 the dialects were completely different everywhere. I would listen to them talking in Shanghaineise and remember not being able to understand a word no matter how hard I tried to think about it or analyze it. I found out they sort of have a class issue with it there and people who can't speak Shanghaineise are looked down upon who live in the city by those who can speak it...is that true?

    • @yiminchinese
      @yiminchinese  4 года назад +4

      haha, I understand how you felt, I had the same experience, I didn't get what they were talking about.
      and about your last question, I would say that not everyone, but a lot Shanghai people have a pride and superiority, since SHANGHAI was the most developed and prosperous city in China, so they look down upon the people from other places. 😁

    • @harrok38
      @harrok38 4 года назад +1

      Well.to.tell the.truth what u.said was.true, but the truth of the.truth nowadays is.that people. from other. provinces refuse. to speak or learn Shanghainese, no pro,but.the problem is.some of.them refuse local people to speak Shanghaiese, they said we don't respect. them. And most of young generations are.not able to speak Shanghainese. We are losing our languages. On the contrary, some.foreigners start to. learn Shanghainese, and my daughter's foreign English teacher speaks.very good Shanghainese. Why do some Shanghainese look down upon others? People from developed cities may answer, I guess it's more about culture.

    Dialects...I am living in a little town, 60 000 inhabitants, near Brussels. Now, dialects are less typical as before, people move a lot and study a longer time...But, when I was young, I met a "Moroccan" woman in Brussels, and she said me that she grew up in Malines. And I did answer, I hear it, you did live in the Hoogstraat ( 300 meters long). In fact, she did grow up fifty meters of there........
    So, dialects... don't worry about that. At condition that people know Pu Tong Hua, even if home they do speak a kind of Kanton or Hakka or..., they will see my nose and be happy to answer me in Pu Tong Hua ....
    I even suppose some will be very pleased.....After all, they did often learn French, Dutch, Nengue Tongo( spoken by but a 100 000 people ), Kréol , English,...and there is a thousands of years heritage shared and builded by more than one billion of Zhong ren.........
    ...I thank you to help anybody to share humankind and build peace. A lot better to give free civilisation than to impose opium or cocaïne by war....

      hi my friend, I personally don't have idea of books that talking about the history of the Chinese language ,since Chinese is so difference, the writing system and the speaking system is two different things, so yes there are books talking about the history of the Chinese characters, and the evolution never the grammar and vocabulary system,but I haven't heard any book trying to cover all the aspect of the language, (perhaps there is, just I don't know it )so I think it's better you make it more specific, learn one thing at a time. 🤗🤗🤗

    Zhōng wén is the writing language like the occidental writing, right?
    Hàn yú is like the official cuz the population?
    Pû tōng huà is like Mandarin, right? The one that every Chinese person knows?
    Is Pû tōng huà the same as Zhōn wén?
    I heard that in some exams are in hàn yú so I have to learn hàn yú and Zhōng wén?
    When we start to learn Chinese which one we should learn first?
    Which Chinese you teach in the videos?
    Sorry but I have a mess in my mind right now.

      don't worry Anna, it's normal when we have doubt about the new things. As I said in the video, they could mean the same thing, but each definition is from different angels.
      the thing I m teaching in my channel is Zhongwen , hanyu, putonghua. at the same time, they refers to the same thing here, just different names.

    Even when taking the dialect continuum into account, a mutually unintelligible dialect is an oxymoron and becomes a language. At some point, one will not be able to understand the other just as Romance or Germanic, or Slavic languages share some words or words that are close in pronunciation until they can longer be understood. I don't see how a Beijing resident could go to Guangzhou (without using Putonghua, a Franca Lingua) and hold a conversation.

      hello James, thanks for your recolonization, I m really honored🥰 🥰 🥰 and to answer your question, normally you just need the word 汉语 and 中文 to say "I speak Chinese", they are quite exchangeable, you don't need to specify that it's 普通话,because all the foreign students, when they are learning Chinese , they are obviously learning the official language普通话,there is no point to specify it. hope it helped , don't hesitate to ask if you have further doubt. thanks again, have a nice 🥰

      yes, you are totally right, Tibetan is another language, as a hanyu speaker, you wouldn't understand anything me Tibetan if you don't study it, but when it comes to Cantonese, sometimes you can figure out what they are saying ,the vocabulary and pronunciation give you a lot clue 😋

    pu er tong er hua er shi er bei er jing er hua er... No ? .... Dialects are the origin of languages, not the contrary, unless domination by a complete strange nation that is imposing its standardized language.... as Han civilisation is old and the size of the country big, and most people had not left their village for generations.... Dialects are normal. Before, when I was a kid, I could often hear in which road or part of the city somebody grew up...And that time, there were but 50 000 people living there...

      thanks for your comment ,but I didn't say mong gu yu is Chinese. I was explaining 3 concepts which all of them are translated as" Chinese" . Notice how I unroll the lesson. I said when a foreigner is learning Chinese ,he is learning mandarin Chinese,they call it zhongwen ,which the literal meaning is language of China ,but the problem is there are other languages beside mandarin Chinese ,like mong gu yu ,zangyu ........
