You are right, we use 华语 for mandarin and we call ourselves 华人here. That's because there are other people groups here like 印度人 and 马来人 etc. Sometimes we refer to ourselves (dialect) as 唐人 from 唐朝 Tang dynasty but seldom as 汉人 even though we know we are. Or we would refer to ourselves as from a particular dialect like 客家人, 海南人, 福建人, 福州人 etc. or even a sub dialect of the main ones like 惠州客人 which I belong to.
