A piece for solo marching snare drum written by Jesse Sieff over the second movement (Allegro Molto) of the Symphony in C Minor, String Quartet No, 8, Op. 110 by Dmitri Shostakovich.
Written with Shostakovich's characteristically darker and dissonant style (and career history) in mind, I found it fitting to perform this piece for my audition with the USMC Drum & Bugle Corps. For me, the biggest challenge of this piece was not playing the notes, or adjusting rhythmic time to a chamber symphony with the most unforgiving instrument in the world - it was simply having the audacity to write over a legendary composer's masterpiece. The caliber of Dimitri Shostakovich's musical genius is something I profoundly respect, and my hopes are to share the influence of his music with others by expressing it as genuinely as possible though my instrument.

i think the best part of this arrangement is how well it leans into what i call the "industrial terror" of Shostakovich's music. the snare makes it sound even more like a grinding, unstoppable machine, especially in sections like 1:27 where it sounds like an engine starting up. terrifyingly good

The level of musicality, expression of dynamics, style and finesse was absolutely stunning. This is true talent and understanding of time and note placement. It's so hard to make music from orchestra translate well with a marching snare. But this guy aced it. I respect this. And I have to mention how much I love this snare. Dynasty has apparently come a LONG way from the garbage snares they made 20-30 years ago.

+Jesse Sieff it's very easy to tell who can naturally write music--especially music that doesn't get in its own way and only "says" what it needs to. Despite fusing two genres here, it's very tastefully crafted. I hope you might be planning a series of these? As a teacher, this would be a great way to tie in classical music to modern approaches.

Jesse, awesome work! Just saw this video on RUclips, and I was so happy to see an awesome solo like this one you put together! I love stuff like this with the incorporation of marching percussion into orchestral pieces. Amazing chops and great work! I sent you a message on your site for the sheet music! I'm psyched!

I'm the concertmaster of my orchestra and a concert/marching percussionist, I can tell you with confidence that every note seemed on point with the background. Great job.
