  • Today, let's take a look at and inside of a 10000mAh power bank (Vanguard-X1) made by Ainope, which was donated to me. It has 2 USB outputs (2.1A and 1A) and 2 different charging inputs. It also has a nice LED display indicating the state of charge. It contains a Li-Pol battery pack rated 10 000 mAh. Let's test it and see how does it work.

      You (typically) get what you pay for. If it's cheap, it's probably cheaply made. It may "get the job done", but the performance will suck and/or it will have low durability. I know a guy who needs durable products due to how he is. He spent a bit of money on charging cables and tends to get the cheapo ones and they rarely last a month. Something on them will break. I tend to get proper cables and I almost never have to replace them. I still have some cables from a few years ago.

    -I would say the 6-pin chip is to get a higher charging current for Apple devices EDIT it's probably a DCP charge current negotiation chip that works for all devices.
    -The 16 LEDs inside the display are controlled by a method called "Charlieplexing". It's a very clever technique that allows saving numerous pins on both the display and the microcontroller and thus saving a lot of space, at the expense of a more complex software.

  • @Thomas1124ful

    @ ~10:00: The current is so low because there are no data lines in the cable. So it assumes it's a normal USB port and only draws 500 mA.

  • @VYIW7ue4YBEJo6ki

    The answer to low current when cheap cable is used are the data lines missing from it - most chargers won't supply more than 500mA if device connected won't request it (USB standard says it should be 100mA).
    And I think that some powerbanks also won't charge using full current when used with smart chargers respecting USB standard.

    I have the updated Vanguard-X1 now with QuickCharge/PowerDelivery. They have kept all the good properties and just added QuickCharge to it .. very nice. A simple way to test the capacity from the outside is to charge it using 5V through a meter. Almost all powerbanks use a linear regulator in this mode. so the charged Wh may be higher but the mAh will be directly readable on the USB tester. :)

  • @superdau
    @superdau 5 лет назад +1

    I don't think that the unpierced cell is damaged. The pouch doesn't really add any mechanical strength, it will just keep the electrolyte in. You have to handle these pouch cells pretty badly to damage the internal construction, because the layers are tightly packed. Even the pierced one will work as long as you patch the hole. If the solvent for the electrolyte evaporates it will stop working and oxygen getting in will oxidize the active chemicals also stopping it to work.
    You could open the pierced cell to show its construction and see how much "reserve" there is before something would go wrong.
    And while at it, open an 18650 as well to show that they are the exact same thing just in a different form factor and dispell the myth of the "lipo" and "li-ion" differences. There is no inherent difference between what people call "lithium polymer" and "lithium ion" batteries, except for the shape. The shape doesn't tell you anything about the chemistry inside, although pouch cells (that's the proper name) are most often what would be labeled "ICR" or "LCO" in cylindrical cells. Talk to battery manufacturers and they will tell you about packaging type (can, pouch or prismatic for example), but they are all li-ion batteries.

    It is a good idea to buy a Camper van. I bought a little bigger than just a van, I bought a old Iveco Daily 40-12 Mobilvetta Icaro, because I will have more options and space. I'm often at radio ham Fielddays and Flohmarkt (? Don't know English) market for private selling surplus electronics. I can really recommend, and with bigger mobile home than VW van you will be able to drive the world with your cat. Lot of Campers do that and cats obviously like it. If you want to drive away from big tourist routes, try not to buy something with front drive FDW. There is even wet gras a big problem. Front axle 700 Kg with all the engine power and 2500 Kg rear axle you will imagine how bad this is. After my all wheel drive Unimog and Ducato now I have Rear wheel drive with double wheel at the rear axle and I can say, It is astonishingly good. 5 star is AWD with differential locks, 3 star is normal AWD, 1 star is rear drive if weight is at rear axle and minus 10 stars is front drive with weight at rear axle.

    The horrible USB connectors can be improved quite a bit by simply pressing your thump hard on the upper metal part opposite the contacts and thereby deforming it slightly inward. It will be harder to insert after this but also it puts more pressure on the contacts and hence improves the contact intermittency issue
