A lamp room is where in the olden days they used to store the paraffin and spare lamps for the semaphore signals. Around the Manchester area there were still these sort of signals into the mid 1990's when the paraffin lamps in the semaphore signal was replaced with electric lamps doing away with the need of weekly going around topping up the paraffin, since then a lot of the semaphore signals have been replaced with colour light signals.

    Hallo G,
Loved this video, another memory lane trip, I remember thinking that Halifax Station wasn't very big considering the importance of the town and area. Brighouse is also well known for being in partnership with Rastrick and between them have a Brass Band. This band enjoyed some fame making some recordings with the singer and piano player Peter Skellern, who sadly is no longer with us.
All in all another enjoyable watch.
I must get back up that way again, I'll put it on my "Bucket List"...

A lamp room was for maintaining oil lamps, filling them with oil, trimming wicks etc. There were still some oil lamps in use on the railways until quite recent times.

    • @jaybee1921
      @jaybee1921 Год назад +1

It may be as well to mention what these lamps were used for and who looked after them. The lamps were for the Semaphore Signals and were maintained by a Lamp Man. His job was to refill the lamps with Paraffin Oil and trim and adjust the wicks, also clean the glass lenses in them. Around once a week he would take these made ready lamps to the signals, climb up the ladders and swop the lamps over, thus carrying the now depleted lamps back to the Lamp Room to start the process over again. It was customery for the Signalman to make the Lamp Man a refreshing cup of tea and a warm by the stove, especially during the winter months.

The third platform at Halifax was used by trains which ran via Queensbury to serve platforms 3 and 4 at Keighley station where the KWVR is now. Their line was actually a branch off this line, so a short section of this line to just before Ingrow still exists. There was an Ingrow East Station on the main line. Queensbury was a triangular station with lines going East to Bradford Exchange, they passed under the lines direct from Halifax, and joined the lines from Leeds at St. Dunstans. These lines closed in 1955, so nothing to do with Dr. Beeching’s report.
In Halifax, near the Chocolate factory and the old Halifax Flour Society building there is Hargreaves foundry. If you walk North from Kings Cross Station in London towards the canal you will pass a quite new building with large cast iron columns with a sort of plaited pattern on them. Hargreaves cast the sections for these columns, and also some reproduction lampposts for the Bluebell Railway Station at East Grinstead.

I definitely have to agree that when it comes to be doing my filming on the Calder Valley, Todmorden is one of my favourites to visit as well as Hebden Bridge (for the trains obviously, nothing to do with anything else at Hebden Bridge, that is the job of the knicker monster haha) and Halifax
14:02 Indeed, I remember when I first saw the 180s for the first time and when they left, everything about them screamed 175s and if you think about it, they are a sort of evolution on the 175 being part of the same family. Just a shame that they are being plagued by a lot of problems and their future with GC is now ropey at best with talks about some of Avanti's Class 221s heading in the direction of Grand Central

Great blog G, lovely area. Glad you enjoyed despite….what has become the new normal of our rail network; late trains, cancelled trains, toilets not working on stations and trains, it’s all falling apart. It shouldn’t be like this, the public and you deserve better. Grumpy 😡 old
    man. Keep safe. x. 🚂🚴‍♂️👣🇺🇦

Hey! Bummer with that cancelled train. Do you do your stops in sequence? I’ve seen another train RUclipsr save some time by passing some stops and getting off and then use the returning service to get to the “middle” stop passed by prior. Many times the returning service will show up quicker than a service in the same direction. It’s a bit more elaborate but could save you some time when visiting so many stations in a day. Geoff Marshal does this for instance.

Depends how long the wait is and what I want to do at each station. I did this one in order as the waits were pretty quick

I’ve always thought Tod Morden sounds like an American sports commentator. Also how does ticketing work? Do you get a day pass or do you buy individual tickets?

Love Toddy and Hebden Bridge. Living in Australia I miss those places so much.😊

Surely it's New Oxford Street in London that's where all the bars and clubs are.

Popstar singer & songwriter Ed Sheeran used to live at Hebden Bridge before he moved to Framlingham, Suffolk. I wonder why Hebden Bridge gets mentioned a lot because of where he comes from. Still it is a lovely place to visit.
