I always liked the idea of 17 saying stuff like "Bitchin'" because it helped him feel like he was still stuck in the slang terms that were common at the time he was turned into a cyborg and put into the stasis pod. He doesn't KNOW that people don't say "Bitchin'" anymore, but everybody was when he was human.

I came down here to post a comment to this effect myself, because yeah, it makes perfect sense whether or not it was intentional. Same thing with 18 using the word "welching"".
To me this really fits with both his character and his design. He wears clothes which were already out of style by the time the manga was being written, uses old slang, and just generally talks like he's been in stasis for a decade, which absolutely fits.
I always figured that was intentional lol
I say "bitchin" exclusively as a reference to Piccolo being asked if he wants to go drive cars again by Goku.

Theory: Gohan actually looks up to Yamcha because he is the only one of the Z fighters who had a life outside of fighting.
That actually makes tons of sense and that is now my theory too.
Yamcha's also the only one who successfully retired from fighting. Poor Gohan will never stop getting dragged into the fight.
Tbh he really is, every other "Z warrior" or whatever you want to call them has no job and just bums around in between world ending crises. In Goku's case, their money was inherited from Chi-Chi's dad (the Ox King), Vegeta from Bulma's billionaire family, Krillin just bums off of Master Roshi, Piccolo doesn't have a home, etc. Yamcha is the only one of the entire group who uses his superhuman abilities to make money (as a rich, famous, successful baseball player). As someone who hates fighting, I think Gohan low key sees Yamcha as a role model for the kind of person he wants to be when he grows up lol

Yamcha is Gohan's favorite uncle who gets him baseball tickets and takes him out for activities that have nothing to do with training, unlike everyone else

It's maybe the only joke in the entire series that relies on making fun of something absurd about Tien, as well. His 'only serious character in the show' status means he doesnt get much chance to have fun made of him and is always aware of how weird any given situation is... except when it comes to his shoulders

It's the perfect joke for that trio. 16 has no idea what he's being asked or agreeing to, but he is so happy to be there and confirm 17's query. Even the set up is clearly just 17 messing with 18 in an attempt to piss her off (as the siblings have been doing to each other ever since they woke up), but she doesn't say anything. Perhaps she doesn't care or is just pretending not to care to not let him "win" this stupid game of theirs (reminds me of Tien and Vegeta's "game")
The "ha ha, she is" just punctuates it perfectly

Chi-chis a nice and friendly lady, I like to imagine that Chi-chi offered Yamcha a different shirt or one of Goku's Gis to replace his, but then Yamcha just decided to deal with his stab holes because all of Goku's clothes weigh like 500 pounds

I love the line about Tien's doctor because the absurdity that Tien of all people is the one to actually go and see a regular doctor. Just imagine seeing this three-eyed bald guy who's goddamn massive sitting in the waiting room.
At first I was gonna say "not that odd, the king of the world is a dog man" and dinosaurs are alive, but then I remembered they can't comprehend people flying or firing energy blasts.
Sometimes when you watch DBZ you kinda forget that the regular people in the DBZ universe are straight up just normal sized normal people.

I don't mind the pausing for actual commentary but when it's just circlejerking the cast it gets a bit much, but they have gotten better with that as the commentary series goes on.

Chris Sabat is the funimation dbz voice director official voice of Vegeta, Piccolo, Yamucha, All Might, etc…. The reason they give him the nickname is so he doesn’t get in trouble with Toei or higher ups at Funi
Also makes sense why they say he is their "hero" with an All Might pic

I've always loved the sheer rage and contempt in Trunks' simple "No."
In those few seconds of dead silence before he replied, Trunks remembered the entire events of the History of Trunks movie, how 18 had slaughtered thousands of innocent people, left cities in a pile of rubble, the streets full of corpses, and the dolls of little kids she killed, how she killed his father, Goku, and all of the main cast, including Gohan, his closest friend and mentor...just to get some sick sadistic pleasure out of causing others misery. Then he decided to say "...no." And left it at that lol
17:23 I always imagined Piccolo and Kami’s “hmm” exchange to be something like the “thwarting my plans” joke based on the way their voices go up and down, not sure if that was intentional or not lol. I imagine something like:

My favourite Tien line is a few episodes' time, the "I am not a spectator, I am a warrior!" Because it's so hilariously sudden but also very true to the character overall. And it's a badass delivery.

I don't get it!
I never saw 16 as "soulless." I saw him more as lacking human flaws such as hatred and jealousy and having a child-like lack of trauma and bias. So his completely logical mind only saw mindless destruction as pointless, and thus he became the person that reigned 17 and 18 in.
16 is a literal robot; no soul.
Yeah, 16 having no soul because he’s an actual Android is the reason that he isn’t brought back by the Dragon Balls like 17 is.
He's also ginger. If you were on internet in 2010 you'd know Gingers don't have a soul meme :D

My theory is that the androids don't become evil in this timeline because of 16.
He gives the pair a goal and some adventure to just go and have fun.
If it was just the brother and sister left to their own devices it wouldn't be long before violence takes hold.
My theory is that when Cell traveled back in time, he was able to connect to Gero's computers telepathically (since that's how he learned everything growing up) and made some changes to the androids to make them 1) more powerful so they wouldn't die like in his timeline and 2) less homicidal so Cell would have more people to absorb
@@battlesheep2552 that kind of seems like a large stretch. but I guess it is possible. The most obvious difference between the timelines is 16 being there. My question is what happened to 16 in future trunks timeline.
Considering the canonical reason of 16 being less murderous is them opening up the pod before the start up procedures, that might be the idea.
16 definitely had an influence but Goku still being alive is another. The androids don't know he's sick but know he's alive by the fact everyone else essentially admitted to hiding him as opposed to them getting activated and finding out he's already dead and with their primary target already dead they just decide to attack everyone.
I assume the thing with Frieza coming to earth possibly also alter Dr. Gero's actions, possibly why he apparently created additional androids beyond 17 and 18.
In the dub of Kai, when Trunks describes 17 and 18 to Goku, he does admit he’d call her cute if she wasn’t killing everyone. Regardless, i’ll always love that cold delivery from Kaiser at 11:03
For the record, Kami had Goku’s tail permanently removed so he could restore the moon, and I always felt that before then he was using his powers to prevent natural disaster when the moon had been destroyed.

I think they were also saying this is a setup for why they do hate country music in the movies and people missed it. So it’s doubly horrible because it’s a fantastic joke and they missed out on a slight characteristic of 17 and 18, in that they aren’t randomly picking things to be “petty” at. They have grievances and act on them because they have no recourse.

It makes sense to change the Heart Virus to just a heart attack as no one else - in or out of the group - even showed signs of catching it, despite being a virus. The only time it even was a virus was in the Budokai games
To be fair it did take like 3 years to manifest any symptoms, and that's even with Super Saiyan accelerating it.
@@battlesheep2552 True, but when it did manifest, it seemed to clung specifically to Goku. Even those who had prolonged exposure to him, such as Yamcha and Chichi, didn't seem to catch it. Trunks called it a virus, but it didn't spread further
@@AdiG1 well if it would have happened it probably did during the time skip after the Cell saga, at which point everyone just took the medicine that Bulma was able to syntesize from the dose Trunks brought back. We probably just didn't hear about it.
@battlesheep2552w we also don't know how it spread. Just because it's a virus, that doesn't mean it's airborne. Goku could have (and probably) caught it from eating alien vomit
Edit: we also don't know if it can transmit to other species. The only other full Saiyan is Vegeta and the only contact they had while he was sick was when Vegeta kicked him to piccolo
@@AdiG1 it could be that Saiyans were uniquely vulnerable to the virus. It would also explain why it is more deadly in Goku after Super Saiyan accelerated it. In the real world viruses evolutionary goals are to multiply and live in hosts, not kill them. This is why the most deadly diseases IRL came from pathogens native to other animals as hosts.
Of course this ignores Piccolo says that the people that are in contact with Goku should take a dose of the cure to Yamcha.
All Might popping up when he says "Thank you DJSexadillionaire, you're our hero," is a fantastic wink
The Oolong “I’m delicious” line is bloody brilliant and makes me chuckle literally every time.

I also love how when Krillin almost feeds Oolong pork in the Cooler movie, he saves it by saying "Pooooor-porpoise," but Chiaotzu (despite stretching the word out) still ends it with "-orK." Like, he already ate it, said it was good, it's like the Bulma Trunks thing: no point keeping it from ya, damage is already done.

Flange is a great word, it's even better if you work on the railway, where it is worked into such wonderful phrases as "flange squeal", "flange lock" and "automatic flange greaser"
The transparent and honest framing you folks remembered to make that 16, 17 and 18 aren't actually KILLING in this arc, they're just trying to live, is such a subtle and relatable message. To think that when things are frozen outside the framework of "kill Son Goku, kill Son Goku", it reminds us that only during History of Trunks were they murderers. Bar taking out Gero, the Z Fighters have a higher body count in this timeline. Having that pointed out is something I'll never stop appreciating, because it gives me a wild respect for these three.
I really love that, conscious or not, you used the term "Hill/Valley" to describe the plot's pace for the saga all about time travel.
Kaiser looks like a dad who just came back from his office job this episode.

In 34 Yamcha is chosen because future Yamcha commits suicide, hence why Yamcha complains when he does it again in 35.
Also, in 17, Vegeta gets mindbroken after having the Dragonball stolen from in and sometimes the Voicelines follow complete distress.
Oolong became a cannibal
Usually the episodes where "nothing" happens to them they're chosen because something involving them does happen--though 39 was actually Chi-Chi, not Bulma, and it was because of Goku's screaming haha. People covered Yamcha in 34, but Vegeta in 18 was his rage breaking, Turtle in 31 was for his being the birthday turtle, Bulma in 32 was dealing with Vegeta, Korin in 40 was worried about Yajirobe and Piccolo didn't update him, and Oolong here was his tasting delicious.
(Also, Freeza for 30 should count as one episode since 30 was only split into three parts due to RUclips upload limits, lol.)
To me this mainly shows how little action there is compared to the season 2. And even when there's action in season 3 there's rarely deaths Vs season 2 which had a million minions to work through.
The mistarefusion shout-out is legit... I watched them for years and never understood how they didn't have several million subs... the breakdowns are as well sourced and cited as it gets and deserves all the flowers.
I love y’all callbacks and setups for jokes. It’s soooo good!!
The three Androids having their little GTA-esque adventures together were something I really enjoyed watching as a kid. I wish that there were more scenes of them hanging out together.
I like the idea Yamcha went to put on Goku's Gi and it just weighed a ton and a half. Man decided to keep wearing the ripped fit.
Nick's Popo delivery of "We keep getting hit by airplanes now. It's funny." at 14:42 made me wonder if that area is the DBZA equivalent of the Bermuda Triangle...and if so, that's a fate so much worse than death.
The thing about tien's shoulders is down right hilarious. I absolutely can see him ignoring anyone telling him he shouldn't train.
Shudo, Gan, and Remix are all so insanely talented giving 16, 17, and 18 time to be real characters was one of the best production decision you all could have made for this season. 18 is one of my absolute favorite performances in the series, behind Cell (all three forms! With one actor! Taka's fantastic) and maybe Freeza.
I like the theory that out of all people Gohan thinks Yamaha is cool and models his hair after him.
Tbf his only other real alternatives are his parents and the Ox King so... Yamcha it is!

I always saw it more as foreshadowing that he would soon be in a life-or-death fight against Cell, which is anything but boring. But he does call Cell boring later, so it comes back like a boomerang.
I mean when i first saw it i was like i feel this is setting up for something because the two most memorable villains to me are freezer and cell as well as i forget goku says your boring me too
17 and 16‘s relationship feels like what a former youngest sibling feels when they find out they have a younger sibling of theirs. So they just have these feelings of oh hey I get to be the older sibling finally, and in this situation that he used to be a cool civil him and be nice to the youngest.

Super unrelated but I just realized that Kaiser voiced Noboyuki Sugu in SAOA. “Oh you still think I’m a briefcase” is such a good line.
He's so good as Sugu/Oberon.

I LOVE that Scott mentions MistareFusion. They are such a great source of information and general breakdown of dragon ball in every facet, and so sorely under-appreciated in the dragon ball community. I don’t know anyone else in the dragon ball community that is so dedicated to creating such detailed, explained, and in-depth content on the series. I really wish they had more subscribers and views, because they deserve it.

@@girly_tricksternot exactly sure, there’s so many episodes they made, and the videos go into detail when any plot point or inconsistency occurs, so it would be hard to pinpoint. Without going through all the videos, I’d probably say it’s either within the Piccolo Diamao arc pt 6 or 7, or it may even be in the Cell arc videos… can’t be entirely sure without rewatching probably hours worth of content. I would really recommend just watching all of their DBD videos from start to finish, one by one, if you can and if you’re interested in it. Highly recommend it.

Loved the Idea that 17 dyes his hair and its naturally blonde. Which would make sense because 17 and 18 are siblings.

The next few episodes are, in my opinion, peak writing. The next "valley" before the Cell game being almost as good.

By the way, if you remember from Dragonball, when Master Roshi took on Goku and Krillin as students, he moved his house to a different island (due to it being a capsule house). So it makes sense that they would take Goku there, because he doesn’t necessarily have an established address or location. Of course, that doesn’t mean he moves around all the time and he could still stay in one location long enough to be located by Dr. Gero, but he is still capable of moving somewhere else.

I have a theory about Tien's shoulders. I think the reason he lets his shoulders get so big is because he secretly believes that is what makes Super Saiyan so strong because if you look at Goku's design during the final parts of Goku vs. Freeza you will see he has the most massive shoulders he has ever had in the whole series, I bet Tien saw that while watching via King Kai and was like "THAT! That must be what peak performance looks like!"
And he slims down again after seeing Beerus and Goku's god form.
That Tien scene about his shoulders and the doctor is, quite possibly, my favorite scene in all of DBZ:A. So goddamn hilarious.
The Mass Effect franchise shows that with good character writing, long stretches of a show/game that's just character interaction can be the fans' favorite part of a property. That's how I feel about Season 3 of DBZA: the character writing is just so good that I love spending time with them all. Particularly the Androids on their road trip. The way you guys wrote them was brilliant! I couldn't wait for the next scene of theme faffing about. The dynamic between 16 and 17, in particular, is wonderful.
If I could sum up the writing for Season 3 in a single word, it'd be "Bitchin'." :^)
Edit: Also that side-by-side comparison of the various iterations of Gohan and Yamacha, tho. Made me say "Oh my god...OH MY GOD!!!" Never noticed it before but, well, oh my god!

My take of your Tenshinhan is he's the straight serious man in a group that has a lot of strange individuals which is kinda funny when you think about his full background as a character cause he also is a strange individual but at the same time you get why he has this "role" in said group. Kinda similar to that running gag with Sideshow Mel in The Simpsons where you just have for granted that this dude who's almost always shirtless and with a bone in his hair is the usual voice of the crowd. Here you have this three eyes guy who takes great pride in his capabilities as a martial artist used to want to be an assasin and besides hanging out with this group of people he just trains along his best friend who looks like a short chinese vampire with psychic powers and even though he's reserved and stoic in nature his continious antagonistic nature towards Vegeta makes all the sense in the world cause after all Vegeta has done why would they should give him a chance with open arms? He hasn't redeemed himself! He just stoppped having the Earth as a target.
Kaiser's hair looks so nice this episode, I'm so used to the hat! Also I love Yajirobe being shot at because the sound effect is 100% the Counter-Strike AK-47 sound, which means Dr. B just has one in the lab.
Fun fact, Welching is infact a slur. Its ordinates with British horseracing in the 1860's and probably would have originally been spelled more like 'Welshing'. It is meant to be discriminating against the people of Wales. Sort of like 'Indian giver' today.
Pausing and talking about the scene is what makes these commentaries better than one on a DVD/BLU RAY
The irony of Gohan's hair is that the few hairstyles that DO exist in the series are there because he has even FEWER faces/head shapes.
I hope once Taka catches up. The three of you guys can do these commentaries together
