@Brad_Lex_01 You guys should try some more recent songs from TP & the Heartbreakers in the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s : I Should've Known it, Leave Virginia Alone, Something Could Happen, Hung Up and Overdue, Wildflowers, Honey Bee, Room at the Top, Lonesome Sundown, The Last DJ, Dreamville, Have Love Will Travel, Saving Grace, Square One, Down South, Big Weekend, American Dream Plan B, Fault Lines, Forgotten Man, U Get Me High... and also some songs from his Mudcrutch 1 & 2 albums (Scare Easy, Shady Grove, Lover of the Bayou, Trailer), etc.
Tom Petty explained: "That was a song that took a long time to write. Roger McGuinn swears he told me the line - about the waiting being the hardest part - but I think I got the idea from something Janis Joplin said on television. I had the chorus very quickly, but I had a very difficult time piecing together the rest of the song. It's about waiting for your dreams and not knowing if they will come true. I've always felt it was an optimistic song."
One thing about Petty .. as great a singer as he was.. the band that backed him up were just as great.. The Heartbreakers were tight and he had one of the fine lead guitarists in Mike Campbell.. Really can't go wrong with anything he did, some better than others but this was a heavily played song. Fine reaction.. Happy Holidays to all..
I almost choked on my drink when Brad mentioned his dream about Tom Petty...it just so happens that in my first ever "lucid" dream I was at an outdoor concert and Petty was performing THIS very song. Not the same dream situation as Brad's, but still, the dream aspect caught me by surprise.
I have used drugs and induction videos to try to achieve lucid dreams. I have had two. One I spilled gravy on the coffee table next to where I was asleep and as I was trying to clean it and save some papers I realized it was just a dream. I simply laid back down and went back to ''sleep''. I see your quotation marks around lucid what does that mean? Did you have full consciousness and control? It is probably best I never achieved more in the realm of lucid dreams. I don't like being awake as it is. Living in a dream world would be very addictive. and what if it turned on you and you couldn't ever sleep again normally?
@@airgunfun4248 Just extremely realistic, as if I was awake and in a parallel universe. Faces in the crowd very distinct, yet no one I knew. Happened during a normal night's sleep. Probably not technically a lucid dream, hence the quotes. :)
This song and Even The Losers are my 2 favorite Petty songs. I've been listening to them for forty plus years and they never get old. Mike Campbell is a guitar God. Tom and the boys are the best thing to come out of Florida.
Speaking of Tom Petty's house reminds me of one of my favorite stories about a friend, Teresa, who needed a broader perspective on music. She was visiting California and as a big Tom Petty fan she drove to his house, but he wasn't home. She walked around Petty's property snapping pictures when she spotted a man at the mansion next door washing a car in the driveway. She went up to him and told him how she was big fan of Tom Petty and began asking him questions about the rock star. He was very friendly and told her a lot of nice things about his famous neighbor. He was so nice and, as a sort of consolation prize, she asked if she could take a photo with him. He agreed. When she returned to Florida she showed the photo of her arm-in-arm with Tom Petty's neighbor to her then boyfriend. She said, "I couldn't get a picture of Tom Petty, but I got a photo of his neighbor." To which her boyfriend shouted, "Holy shit, that's Ronnie James Dio!" When she showed me the photo, she simply asked, "Do you know who this is?" Of course, I said, "Holy shit, that's Ronnie James Dio!" I often wonder if some Dio fan had the situation reversed and didn't know who Tom Petty was. Nah.
Sweet! Dio was a mensch by all accounts. The first concert my folks ever let me to go when I was a young teenager was Black Sabbath on their Heaven and Hell tour when Dio sang for them. My buddies and me showed up early and got front row seats and had a great time. Dio slapped our hands so much as he ran back and forth across the stage during the show that we were tempted to never wash them again. I've held Dio in high regard ever since then, even as I got older and my tastes in music changed. RIP Tom & Ronnie.
Lex nails it AGAIN! Yes, Tom does pitch his voice to the front of his mouth, that way he achieved what is called a mixed voice, which is part chest resonance and part head resonance, so you get the fuller sound of chest voice with the brighter, clearer, edgier, tones of the head voice, and as a bonus, you get better projection.
brad, you like tom's voice because it exudes an earnestness, a true, plaintive cry. you FEEL what he's singing, his honesty. lyrically gifted, the sound of tom's voice rings authenticity with the words - it's endearing ❤
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers! When Tom left us, I realized I listened to more of Tom Petty in my adult life than any other musician. Truly missed, Truly one of the greats!!!
TP and the Heartbreakers is the soundtrack to my children's whole life. Absolutely crushing to us when he died. Sounds goofy, but like losing a family friend
This was the very first Tom Petty song I ever heard....that unique voice and vocal style along with those kicking guitar riffs drew me and I've been a fan ever since.....He's so good, I can even forget all about Brad's dream with Tom Petty sharing a hot tub!
OMG ! At first Brad thinks Lex is talking crazy about Tom singing from his teeth🤣Then he finally agrees. 😂 Do you two hear yourselves?🤔 Freakin Helirious.🤣 Man....do I love this channel !
7:21;;;Lex actually has a good point..Freddie Mercury of Queen had big teeth that were a little crooked, but he wouldn't have them fixed ;cause he thought it'd mess up his singing method! Petty sang the same way, with just a little tightning up his throat to get the growl in his.
I love Tom Petty's voice, along with Dylan, Tom Waits, Patti Smith and Neil Young. It's the uniqueness that draws me in. Anyone can have a pretty voice, but give me someone who is one of a kind.
I agree with Petty and Smith, but no matter how recognizable Dylan and Young just irritate the hell out of me. But I get it. I feel the same about voices like Axl Rose, Darius Rucker, Dolly Parton, Prince or Michael Jackson.
@@pleutron We like what we like. Janis Joplin is another person I should have listed. Almost all of the artists I like are not your standards, they all have something I consider special. I also like Prince and Michael, Dolly only sometimes but that's mainly because I don't like country music very much.
I love old Tom so much. It’s an odd feeling to grow up with him, loving his music, it being such a big part of your entire life, then to sit here now watching him and he’s so much younger here than I am now, and he’s reminding me a little of my grandson, his complexion his hair and eyes. Anyway my life has been touched by him and I am so sorry we lost him. RIP Tom we miss you!
His lyrics (singing) was very "clipped". He didn't over-carry his notes or riffs. He sang forward because he was a "mouth breather". So there was some nasal overtones (it worked for him) as well. I saw him live in 83. They killed it. He's in my all time favs list.

Tom has many great songs but I must say this one has always been my favorite! I remember buying the 45 & playing it over & over on my record player. Good times.
RIP TP. A great songwriter and musician. I always felt that he had assumed the mantle of The Byrds while adding a harder edge. I love his voice, too - somehow he could get loud while still sounding laid back, which is a neat trick! This is one of my favourite of his songs - you should also try "Even the Losers". (You should also try some of The Byrds - maybe "Feel a Whole Lot Better")
Waiting, in general, is the hardest part. Waiting for your vacation day, waiting for a holiday, waiting for the light to turn green, waiting in line at the grocery store, waiting on your package in the mail, etc. I consider this song to apply everywhere.
