In the summer of 1961, Petty visited his uncle who was working on the set of Presley’s film, Follow That Dream in Ocala, Florida. “He arrived in a fleet of white Cadillacs,” Petty recalled to Rolling Stone in 2011. “People were screaming, handing records over a chain-link fence for him to sign. I remember his hair was so black that the sunshine was glowing off of it. Just a nod and a hello made your skin tingle. I was high for weeks. It lit a fever in me to get every record I could, and I really digested it. Elvis became the soundtrack of my early years.” Galvanised by Elvis’s music and his man of the people persona, this meeting gave Petty the adequate tools his needed to go on and become a legend in his own right. In just over a decade, people would be saying that he, too, was glowing.
This is an iconic American performer who has so many memorable hits. Thank you for entering this rabbit hole. I would suggest a tune that he did about 10 years after the Waiti. It's called Free Falling
Love Tom Petty he was an amazing rocker! I know you'd love American girl heck all of his songs are fire. If you read about him he got alot of inspiration from Sun Records and the sound of Elvis, Roy Orbison and others you can feel it! It's crazy how alot of rockers brought our thet original rock and roll sound and adapted it to their styles. I think you'd really love Chris Isaack another artist who really took on the rockabilly sound and made it his own you really can tell without reading anything how much Elvis inspired him in his look and singing
Britt, Tom Petty has an amazing number of fantastic songs. Since most people will recommend the better known ones, I'll throw out a couple of his early gems that aren't heard much anymore. I recommend "Listen to Her Heart" and "Even the Losers", wonderful songs you'll be glad you listened to. This band has had a special place in my heart since I first heard them in 1977. One of the best ever!
Over 40 years of music, and I feel like I grew up and went through life with him - good times, bad times, divorce, finding love again❤ We saw him in concert many times and each one was just a blast. He was very loyal to his fans as well. We have an organized group who still meet up to go to other concerts because we're united in our love for music. Maybe check out one of his more recent songs - I'd recommend Fault Lines!
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers were a great American rock band formed in 1976. They had a lot of great hits such as "Refugee", "Runnin' Down A Dream", "Learning To Fly", "Mary Jane's Last Dance", "Don't Do Me Like That", "You Got Lucky", "Change Of Heart", "I Need To Know", "Listen To Her Heart" etc. In 1989 Petty went solo & had quite a few hits such as "I Won't Back Down", "A Face In The Crowd", "Yer So Bad" etc. He was also part of the supergroup "Travelling Willburys" in 1988.
Quintessential rock-and-roller and song writer... and the Heartbreakers are a tremendous band. His collabs with other artists are really wonderful, too.
I've said this many times, and I'll say it again to you, because you do get it. He stayed true to Rock n Roll for 40 years, with barely any changes for the times. That's an amazing accomplishment for anyone, and he was able to do it because his song writing was second to none.
I always felt Tom Petty's music was Timeless he made music from the 70s through the 2010s until his tragic death. He revolutionized the music industry by standing up to the studios and reinventing how artists get compensated. His concerts were legendary and he doesn't have a bad song. He's was one of the last thoughtful singer-songwriters.
In the movie Echo In The Canyon Tom Petty tells a story how as a teenager he rang up a radio station and won The Beach Boy's Pet Sounds. He speaks very highly of Brian Wilson the singer songwriter and arranger of The Beach Boys material. So Britt your feeling that "The Waiting" sounds like waves crashing and "fun in the sun" may have it's origins in Tom Petty's admiration for The Beach Boys. I have a friend called Santana who is from Alabama and there is something in your personality that reminds me of Santana. It is your cheeky smile and confident look when reacting to a Video. Anyway thank you for all your postings they are lots of fun and you are really open and interested in lots of different artists and genres. 👋🤩
YAY, THE LIFEGUARD AND THE SWIM!!! That was delightful. "Refugee" is either the first or one of his very first hits. It's got such a fantastic vibe to it. I know you'd love it. And the singing on it is pretty incredible.
It's like a dream, it's like a movie, waiting is absolutely the hardest part by far, it can make a grown man cry, waiting will test your resolve and then some ❤️🔥 true the song is like a fun and thrilling roller coaster 🎢 ride of delight on a summer day at the beach ⛱️
It could be anything, that's the beauty of it. This song spoke to me when I was nearing 2 weeks past my daughter's due date, and it speaks to me now when I don't know what's going to happen with my job. It's that feeling of being in limbo.
Love this man! Tom Petty is one of a kind, no one sounds like him. Actually, if he does kind of sound like anyone else I'd say Bob Dylan. He has so many hits, incredible!!! Thanks for reacting to a great musical artist!! RIP, gone to soon.....🙏
Tom Petty, did live in Malibu before passing in 2017. He also owned a smaller oceanfront house just a couple minutes' drive away used as a recording studio or guest house.
Tom Petty is a Vibe!! His music exudes Nostalgia, in my opinion. He's so Legendary. Check out his song/video "You Don't Know How it Feels". It's a banger!! RIP Tom!
Tom was the best of southern rock, combined with beach bar band, with folk, country and psychedelic/stoner rock thrown in, well, just because! Location. Time period. Just happened. The Heartbreakers are some of the the busiest folks in the biz! Mike & Benmont have played on, engendered, and produced many award winning and commercially successful albums for other artists.
I saw Tom Petty in a club in Boston, MA, before he broke out. My friends and I said this guy is going to be big. A year or two later he was on every radio station but sadly we were never able to see him live again.
I think you may be my favorite person on RUclips. So genuine and always here for a good time. I was thinking summer when you were trying to think of what it felt like and then you said beach. Very good choice for the feel of the song. I like your dance break too.
The immortal Tom Petty (RIP) always provided a great sound. His music was always uplifting and great enjoyment. Great Reaction Britt... Thanks a bunch.
The hardest waiting? For you do one of my (Eric Johnson and Yes) requests!!😊😂 Tom Petty is special to me because most of the bands that have influenced me were already big before I was at an age to appreciate them. I bought Tom's first album as a 10-year-old. Saw him in Concert when I was 16 and again at 32. Like Prince, the day he died hurt the soul.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is always awesome live . Don't come around here no more live is one of the best hat intros ever ! And Mike Campbell's solo is just ripping !
Give "Breakdown" (Live 1985) a try. It was an early hit for TP from his first album. There are tons of other songs to try as the rabbit hole is very deep. "Southern Accents" is a slower tune that you might like too.
Tom has so many good songs. An album from 2010 called "Mojo" is a great collection of varied styles. Just for starters: I Should've Known It Let Yourself Go Lover's Touch Candy U.S. 41
Little bit of trivia: Tom did the voice of Lucky for the show "King of the Hill". His character married LuAnne (voiced by Brittany Murphy!) So sad that we've now lost both of them 💔
Investigate the Traveling Wilburys --- all off them a music legends. Tom Petty, Roy Orbison,George Harrison, Jeff Lynn and Bob Dylan------ great stuff. For TP Check other songs " you recked me", "free falling", "learning to fly" and arguably the greatest rock song ever "Refugee"
Tom petty in concert was great. I saw many live but his show must have been one of the oddest and cool at same time. It would have been around 95 . I think there was the largest mix of people and ages of any concert I was ever at.
Waiting for the right one to come along or come to her senses and come back to him. He mentioned he chased some women around, but none made him feel as good as with her.
Tom Petty was one honest rocker. Stripped down, fine playing Rock. But dear, I'm asking you again, please react to Tim Buckley-"Sweet Surrender." You will end up a melted pile of goo on the floor.
Hey Beautiful...I think you would enjoy Savage Garden....try I Want To....they have many more but this is a great intro to their awesome music....enjoy !!!!
So many great songs but if you want a fun one that no one ever lists try the live version of Do-Wah-Diddy or Breakdown from the live Album Buried Treasure.
Britt You should React to "God Bless The Child" by The Group Blood Sweat and Tears. David Clayton Thomas has and incredible voice and the Horns section awesome.
You are going to dive into a deep rabbit hole with Tom Petty. He was great at what he did. You would also dig Steve Miller Band. Start with "The Joker."
if you have not already done so, listen to peter, paul, and mary. either puff the magic dragon, old lady who swallowed a spider, where have all the flowers gone?, wonderful little toy, actually you cannot go wrong with anything you listen to.
Yeah, I LOVE Tom Petty, God rest his soul. Maybe check out "American Girl" sometime if you can fit it into your busy schedule. 😁 Love your shit, Britt. Thanks again for everything you do.
I'm definitely a Pettyhead, I got see Tom and the boys perform 2 months before Tom passed.

Ok I googled it and Tom said he got it from a Janis Joplin quote about being on stage and she said everything else is just waiting
We are all waiting for something, what it is, is irrelevant to anyone else but yourself, trust me, patience is a virtue

One of the best concerts out of many that I’ve ever attended..: he was one one of my favorites… teenage memories ❤️

Listen to his duet with Stevie Nick's "Stop Dragging my heart around "

He is Dylan's long lost cousin.
I've never understood the comparison between Dylan and Petty. Their sounds are so completely different. Two unique (meaning one of a kind) artists.
As much Byrds as Dylan. Though TP and the Heartbreakers toured with Dylan for a year or so, serving as Dylan's backing band, around '86 or '87.
@@keithosmond5730 thanks for the info, had no idea that TP toured with Dylan, that's so COOL 😎😎😎
@@laurakennedy9250 depends on who you're asking I guess!!

RIP Tom!
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are by far my favorite group. Not a single bad song in the whole bunch. Please go down this rabbit hole.
Tom petty and the Heartbreakers motto was "don't bore us, get to the chorus".
You are so good at getting the artists you react to! You give everyone a chance, and pick up on the vibes so well.
Best rock band of all time
Tom Petty is an icon... A sixer next to my childhood river might only start to scrape at what I took from it, as a kid...
Tom Petty- Refugee, American Girl, you wreck me, Here Comes my Girl….just to name a few. so many classics..

We love our Tom Petty. Truly one of a kind. Cheers to his dynamic band, The Heartbreakers too 🙏
Tom Petty musical genius! R.I.P
I saw Tom Petty in a club in Boston, MA, before he broke out. My friends and I said this guy is going to be big. A year or two later he was on every radio station but sadly we were never able to see him live again.
Great opening lyrics, reminds me of High School dreamy romance and early love in life.
RIP....one of Amerca's finest songwriters.....miss you Tom
the waiting for your reactions is the hardest part Love your input always

Tom was injured and had to heal which sucked. He took that frustration and artistically added romance etc and BAM! Great song!
Tom Petty is equal parts Gainesville Florida, Los Angeles CA, and Acapulco Gold. And probably the greatest American songwriter in history.
The waiting from infatuation to love.
Listen to the first verse again.
