QUESTION - if REM sleep only happens at the end of a full cycle, then why do I sometimes start dreaming in the first few minutes, as I’m falling asleep? Also,, why do I sometimes dream as I’m waking from a short nap, such as 45 minutes to 1 hour?
A good power nap from personal experience is... when your alarm goes off and be like what??? did i even fall sleep? why did that 20 minutes felt like 5 minutes? and i feel good and awake
Sometimes, I can’t take my power naps but my eyes are closed for about 15-20 min and I still am aware of my surroundings. Most often, I would feel much better and less sleepy without the luxury of taking a nap.
Hoang Tran I have worked plenty of night shifts and find sitting in a dark room for twenty minutes, without drifting off to sleep, to be quite restorative.
If you have the time, 90 minutes is a full cycle of 1 - REM and you will feel refreshed. 60 mins is the beginning stage of REM and you may feel a little groggy but should be fine for your memory. 30-50 mins is what you want to avoid.
I’ve tried setting an alarm for twenty minutes but it takes me like two hours to fall asleep every time so I’m still awake when it goes off. I don’t get how people do it
This happened to me a lot. It takes me a long time to fall asleep. But now I just take a power nap when I am feeling extremely tired because I fall asleep soon when I am tired. I wake up refreshed and feel like I haven't slept at all.
I have heard to get a good “power nap” that rest with your keys (or something) in your hand. Once you drop item then you need to get up. Supposedly, that is all the time you need. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
@@FireZoiD i’m guessing your hand is sort of dangling off the edge a bit with your fist closed, and when you fall asleep your fist slowly opens and the sound of the keys crashing on the floor will wake you up? that’s the only way i can think of it
Amazing video as ever! If I feel sleepy or tired even after sleeping or napping adequately, I make sure to do some activity that I like a lot or excites me immediately upon waking up for about 15 mins. That way I slowly transition into feeling interested /refreshed and ready.
Just an anecdote for you, I did this the second I finished watching this video and it actually worked! I had to come home from the library because I was falling asleep, and set it for 20 minutes and actually woke BEFORE THE ALARM and remember just feeling non groggy / headache
I've heard that napping with your legs elevated helps by keeping more blood around your brain area. I started napping this way and it does seem to help. Time duration is still the number one thing.
Yes, its part of ayurveda / yoga science. Specially suggested to be done for approx. 15 min post a meal in the afternoon (post lunch basically), as then all the blood flow can be utilised in digestion, which results in a faster turn around time and reduced the grogginess. Lunch is also supposed to be the heaviest meal of the day, as the Sun is at the highest point, creating a direct impact on our digestion abilities (agni, the digestive fire). Can share more of this offline if interested.
I had about a 2-hour sleep debt that I‘d accumulated over two days, and I fell asleep a couple hours earlier for 20 minutes. I now feel SO rested & refreshed, and even look more youthful! I feel the best I’ve felt in days or weeks, and I wanna know how I can recreate this experience, at will.
uhhhhh I just took a 10 hour nap and it’s 12 am and I have school tomorrow and I don’t think I can go back to sleep 😭😭 THIS IS WHY I DONT LIKE TO TAKE NAPS!!
I've had sleep problems all my life I found that 30 minutes is my sweet spot for a nap any longer and I wind up feeling groggy etc, I like the idea of putting the alarm clock out of reach thank you for this video :-)
This confirms my experience as If I go for a nap and fall into proper sleep I feel crap but I just lightly drift but I am still aware I feel better. There are two danagers of it failing, one is to go into a proper sleep and the other is you get lost in thought.
I haven't tried coffee naps, but whole coffee sleeps. I drink strong coffee, go to sleep, wake up 3-4 hours later. I can be productive for about 12 hours this way.
i set an alarm to wake up after 17 minutes ...woke up after 4 hours only to find out that my lil bro took my phone and hid it away ...and i'm still looking for the damn phone plus i have 2 exams due tmrw
I accidently had the best power nap before without even trying. I didnt sleep all night so I got up to get something to eat and drank a soda, felt sleepy, fell asleep, and then about a half hour to an hour later my sister woke me up but I felt energized af. Probs the soda that helped so hey, a lil heads up to anyone trying to take a power nap. Im not sure if it is consistent though.
I just woke up from a nap, fell asleep in the first place cause I couldn't keep my eyes awake for the life of me. Woke up sweating buckets, feeling absolutely awful, so I'm here
I must ask, how can you time a nap at all without setting a timer? in my case just makes me hyper aware of how long I have left to fall asleep, leading to me either not falling asleep at all and moving on, or having to just not bother with the timer/alarm at all (which will quite often lead to me sleeping for too long and waking up either at a less than optimal time for wakefulness, or sleeping for far too long for practical reasons) Edit: basically i just don't get how someone can say "ok I'm gonna have a 15-20 minute nap now" and just fall asleep in time to have a more-or-less 15-20 minute nap. maybe naps just aren't my thing thought lmao
I woke up from an hour nap and had a full on conversation with my dad and didn’t even know I was conscious until I was standing in the lounge room saying “good morning” 😭 most confusing moment of my life. Now I’m laying back down , sick and embarrassed asf
I literally have never wake up feeling energetic, nap or sleep, no matter how I try to fit the cycle, caffeine nap etc., just never. I always feel like I’ve been beaten up in my sleep and I’ll die if I get up
People tell me to put my alarm across the room, but once im asleep, i will get up and shut it off. Ive put my phone up on a bookcase for a 20 minute nap and I woke up 6 hours later with it in my hand all alarms turned off. Kinda sucks. Same with alarm clocks.
I went through a phase where I would wake up on the first alarm and cancel all of them and go back to sleep and when I would wake up I wouldn't even remember it
How many people are having a hard time keeping their eyes open 😴 while watching this video because you're super sleepy but want to take a proper power nap?
I just had a four or five hour nap maybe six idk and I woke up at 6:50 it’s now 7:39 and I feel so tired and thirsty like I’m about to faint and now I don’t know if anything will help
I need to train this, I like to sleep late to have time to study extra things outside of work (languages etc) so often as tired at work, lunchtime naps would be amazing if it got me feeling boosted for the day
My sleep schedule is JACKED... I was feeling exhausted from the day, so I went to sleep at 4 PM, and I woke up at like 2:30 AM. It is now currently 6:30 AM for me.
A tip for drowsy sleeper: Take a cold shower, it will put you into survival mode, any drowsiness will be wiped away. If no shower, just wash ur face with cold water, it has much less effect, but better than nothing.
sometimes i can take a nap and felt like i slept for 8hrs. and then there a times when i try to nap but lay there with my eyes closed and can't sleep. does it depend on how tired you are?
I agree with not allowing yourself to easily hit snooze. I always place my alarm farther than my reach so I can get up to turn off the alarm which is helpful.
