Those men and women are being treated brutally by some of the public. It's time for them to start feeling supported and appreciated. I also really liked that your are always honest about yourself; you say what is easy for you and you own up to what is difficult for you. It's refreshing to see that in your videos.

    As a South African that used to work at American summer camps in my 20's I had many encounters with state troopers in PA and NH. I was the older staff member with a bunch of younger camp counselors on days off so the trooper encounters were usually because the crew got a little out of hand, as you do when you work with kids 24/7 for 2 months. I was always impressed with the professionalism of the troopers in the way they handled us. On pretty much every occasion they factored my role with the team into the way they dealt with us, and that helped greatly to generate the respect of the crew. You guys might get criticised a lot but I think the idea of public service as a police officer is much stronger in the USA than many countries. Thanks Austen for doing this series.

    People think law enforcement officers or state troopers need more schooling. No one understands they are coming from educated backgrounds or military service. Showing a basic run-down of what takes place across half a year for these men and women is enough to open peoples' eyes to see the message you're trying to portray, well done!

    • @ENomad
      @ENomad 3 года назад +1

      Not to mention how much it's drilled into you that you aren't an individual. You graduate the academy with a foundation and immediately start training again in the field. Then you're a rookie and typically expected to ask senior officers for guidance because new situations happen every day. Sterile environment of the classroom can only get you so far... that said, I think there should be a lot more defensive tactics training in how to control suspects without relying on tools, and that takes more than an hour every other day for 6 months (if you're lucky to even get that much).

    • @cmconley33
      @cmconley33 3 года назад +2

      Agreed-but keep in mind that the PA State Trooper Academy is *extremely* selective. You won’t get in without a 4-year college degree, and relevant experience is a big plus. The Academy is also longer than most police academies. As a result, the graduates of the Academy have a much better foundation for a law enforcement career, and even then they still have a year or more of training before moving beyond basic PA Trooper duties. So overall, PA Troopers have roughly 5-6 years of college-level studying behind them.
      That isn’t typically the case for large municipal and city police departments.

    • @ryangendreau1216
      @ryangendreau1216 3 года назад +1

      @@cmconley33 Absolutely, that's the basic generalization I was trying to hit on which you expanded. Becoming a state trooper varies from state to state and is typically INCREDIBLY selective. The more the gen. pop. can learn about how things takes place only stands to benefit law enforcement.

    If only all of our police training programs throughout the US were so intense and comprehensive. This is what real law enforcement training looks like. This is how you create a professional and competently effective police force that is properly equipped to protect and serve the public trust.
    Austen, this was an absolutely fabulous piece and quite frankly a much needed one in this current day and age. Honestly more people need to see this and other similar content in order to generate further transparency and outreach between the public and law enforcement. Furthermore such pieces may offer a more personal and humanizing glimpse into the lives of those who train and serve in the field of law enforcement, which once again is more necessary now more than ever...

      As someone that works with police and have done so for years, I only wish that officers in the United States were more extensively trained, more weapons training, more hand to hand combat training, and more de escalation training. With the average amount of training to become a police officer being 16 weeks in the United States, it’s not enough training.
      My good friend is going through the academy now, he was telling me how much weapons training they received, it’s shocking how low the amount of hours they put in. I had more than 50 hours of weapons training before I even owned any firearm of my own, and have continued training extensively since. It’s not fair to train future officers inadequately and then send them off into the most armed country on earth. In Norway for example it’s a 3 year training program to become and officer. Years of training are spent on training how to de escalate situations rather than days/ weeks of training. Why can’t our officers have that length of training? Officers in Norway don’t have to go through every traffic stop knowing that the person they are pulling over could be armed to the teeth. With that as the reality, why not train as much or more than Norway does?
      Personally I think police officers in the United States have one of the hardest jobs, and with inadequate training it makes the job significantly harder. Harder on the officers and harder on the communities that they are patrolling.
      But that’s just my opinion.

    I don't understand why they act like Marine Corps drill instructors. The yelling, the turn around games etc. I do understand the point of having people understand and be able to function under stress, but having a 7 month academy and training you future officers/ troopers to yell at people (because that's what happens when they are trained in that manner) doesn't suit well when speaking with the public! Their go to while under stress will be to yell at the suspect or individual, rather than speak calmly which aids in de-escalation. There's times where you MUST yell or shout to show your presence and "authority" but 98% of the time, you'll make more headway speaking politely and with empathy. The job is very dynamic and ever changing, I understand that. And the respect I have for our officers and the service they provide to our communities is appreciated so very much by me. I just feel that the screaming and yelling done on new recruits will only sent them back when they begin working on the road dealing with the community

    Yes, please do more if these.
    Also don't fell bad about the horse, there are so many different ways to train a horse yoy can easily get yourself in trouble. Lol.
    For instance my Grandpa was a cowboy that lived in Arkansas and CA, mostly in CA. He taught my mom, and she taught us (he sadly passed before we were born) that you hang on with your legs steer with the reins and speed up by tapping your heels. In old westerns if you know how to look that is how they ride.
    Now here in Indiana you speed up by pressing your legs and to steer you do a weird press with one leg put the reins in one side if the neck. So weird I can even remember. Well needless to say the first time I rode a horse trained that way it took of like lightning lol.

    As a lifelong native of the Hershey area, having driven past that exact police academy on the hill countless times, I am so honored that you chose to pursue this experience in my little old home state of Pennsylvania 😁😁

    This is by far the best thing I have seen on Facebook! We need to get you to do more of this as it does reveal to others and allows these cadets to look back in their patrol years why they joined and what they were going in about!

      The military isn't going to let you be a "RUclips Star" and train. It's the government training troops. If you're going to be there? Then you have a contract to fulfill. State vs federal.
      State looking for new troopers vs the military "government" recruiting 18-year-olds on graduation day. Lol
