One of my favorite games of all time. It fixes the problem of Here I Stand, which is a majority of the players have a 3 hour game, while two players at the table have a 5 hour game. VQ moves way more evenly and is engaging moment-to-moment more often.

So …. You enjoyed this more than the SU&SD guys!
I actually own both this and HIS. I have not played this, but would love to. Just takes a special group to dedicate the effort.
    Thanks for the video!

have and played Virgin Queen twice! Yea, I'm expecting a medal for that. For a bonus, my non wargamer friends that played it, still play games with me. Hows that for luck!

I've been looking forward to this one! Thanks for taking the time. It's a great one I think. I just love the history that this and HIS have.

Finally got to play this in person. An 11 hour 4 turn game with minimum breaks. Great fun.
Also playing Here I Stand online tonight using Vassal, ACTs and Discord.
    Thanks for the review.

Here I Stand and Pericles are my favorite BoardGames, I own VQ but haven't played it yet, can't wait to try it (eyeing Tanto Monta too).
Love your reviews guys, please don't ever lose your style, you sound a lot like the people in my gaming group so your reviews always hit home!

I was fortunate enough to play Here I Stand at the weekend, great game, incredible experience.
I did notice that in Here I Stand for playing a Mandatory Event the player does get to use the two CP which is contrary to what you said in this review. Perhaps this changed for the 500th Anniversary edition of Here I Stand which I played.
One other thing, you posted on the blog about playing this back in April, is the video a holdover from then. There seems to be lots of discrepancy as to when blog post and videos of the same things come out.....

Yeah we played and recorded this in April. We just have a massive backlog of videos.

What is the 'simplest' version of this type fo game?
It seems like a lot of fun, but honestly it also seems very complex and 12 hour games?! It's just too long.
Is there any truth to the statement that if you want to play games like this you should just play Root?
    Mny thks guys

what about "how to play" for virgin queen? :)

    • @backburnersareon6481
      @backburnersareon6481 3 года назад +2

The base command point mechanics are similar to "here I stand" but it has that asymmetric aspect like "Root" or the COIN series including the negotiation aspect of diplomacy... aka there is probably no way to explain "how to play it" except a complex rules explanation, focusing on each faction rules, which would seem dry and not give this game the credit it deserves.

Tough, tough question. We've not played this as much so I'm reticent to say. They're both excellent, and this one is a bit crunchier so might need a bit more hardcore of a group.

@@ThePlayersAid thank you for taking the time to answer my question, I appreciate it. I am a big fan of Pax Renaissance and both these games have a similar theme but with a much larger scope and big experience, so both look very appealing

Virgin Queen. I hate the religious conversion rules in HIS. I love all aspects of it and how different each power is.

I own Virgin Queen, but I have no illusions that I am ever going to get around to play it. No regrets, though! I was much more interested in getting Here I Stand, but I received a good trade offer for my copy of Pax Baltica, which I did not like... If I can get another good trade, I'll probably go for it (or maybe even sell)!
Besides, with six players, I would probably rather play Dune!
